RESTAURANT DESCRIPTION

The Castro family emigrated from Spain and established the Spain Restaurant in Downtown Tampa in 1980. The food (Tapas & Entrees) offered here is a representation of the northwest region of Spain, known as Galicia. These traditional recipes have been passed from one generation to the next and are commonly served in Galician restaurants and Bars.

This restaurant doesn't have parking. You can park on the street if you can find any- or pay to park. We found two lots a block away that wanted 9.00 an hour which was rather unfortunate. You can find better parking in the garages etc it just depends how far you want to walk. The restaurant was not busy the night we went and we were seated immediately. I spoke to the waiter about my gluten allergy. He was fine to check with the chef's to make sure everything they prepared was not cross contaminated. The menu has GF next to everything that was gluten free so that takes out the guess work. The house salad was really great, I wasn't to wowed by the Sangria, but it was a good price ($25 for a pitcher). I haven't had ropa vieja since I went GF so I was excited they had it here and it was pretty good. My husband's shrimp dish was also really good and the shrimp were very very tender. We ordered a lot of side dishes just to try out as much as we could eat. Everything was great except the collard green soup- it was not good and that may be because I have never had tripe and was unaware that there was tripe in it. The waiter took it back- but still charged us. It was only 6.00$ So I did not say anything, but they could have removed it from the bill. The chorizo dish was just that- just chorizo in a dish. It could have been skipped to be honest. Overall, I would return and try a few more items. It was a good enough experience and nice to have some gluten free ropa vieja. The food was fairly priced, we ordered a lot and it was only around 100$ with the sangria and one margarita added on. More...

I attended my friend's bridal shower today at Spain Restaurant and & Toma Bar. Our group rented the restaurant which I thought was an great idea so that the shower was intimate and private. The food was delicious. The ropa vieja was delicious and the churros were the best I've ever had. They came out warm and had a chocolate sauce to dip them in which was amazing. The space was perfect for the event even with a small stage. We had about 20 guests total and it was perfect with plenty of room, even tables for the gifts. I highly recommend this venue for private events as the staff was very attentive and made sure we all had drinks and food throughout the entire 3 hours. Thank you Spain for making my friends bridal shower special and for a great event. More...

This is  the second time we visit Toma, we love the Spanish food, this time we went for dinner and show. We had the octopus  as aspetizer and was really good and soft not gummy. Entres, mariscada verde and of course the caldo gallego.. Cant go wrong! Very good and to top it off flan,  the flamenco show was spectacular, it throws you back to Spain. Thank you to our Colombia/Puerto Rico server (pardon for not getting her name) she is amazing! We will definately come back. More...

Excellent tapas and wine! I'm a fan of Portuguese vino verde and they found a Bottle for me once again! The happy hour specials are wallet friendly. Service at the bar is prompt and friendly. The seating is set more for doubles and small groups not a crowd.  European league football is the most often shown tv entertainment. The owner/manager has been present on the floor each time I've been and it shows that he cares for his business in person. (PS the croquettes and papas bravas are even better than the other tapas chain that still has that location in st Pete ;) ) More...

I had no idea they had speedy cafeteria style lunch menu! My co-workers told me their friend filet fish with egg salad was excellent so I had to come check it out. It was slightly thicker on the breading than I'd prefer, but I liked the taste a lot. It wasn't over powering, nor too bland. It went well with the salad they served with citrus dressing which seemed house made. I also dig the interior-- the white tables and chairs keep it fresh and modern and elevates food served in a hurry. A little class added during busy lunch hour. More...

We came for the monthly authentic live Flamenco music and dancing - both musicians & dancers were very good. Wish they had a bigger stage and they could turn up the lights a bit to showcase the beautiful dancers. The place slowly filled up starting at 7pm, 1.5 hr show starts 800pm. Reservations are highly recommended as they also seem to be popular for group events - birthdays, etc. Food was very good - the empanadas & marisco with white wine sauce appetizers were excellent. And they make great mojitos! Happy hour 4pm-7pm with $4 sangrias & mojitos. Next time we'll try sitting at the bar - they service "pinchos" with drink orders during happy hour. Show cover charge is $10/person but well worth it. We'll definitely be back. More...

The restaurant is so nice and very clean. The staff is all very friendly and are willing to offer specails and recommend certain food. They have a happy hour until 7pm that include $4 sangria, wine and mojitos. They also have $3 beers during happy hour. My favorite part was the flamenco show. It's once a month and is roughly from 8-10. I recommend getting a reservation for that night to ensure a good spot. The show is great because they have several flamenco dancers and are very talented. The best part is that they have a live music performers too, which include a guitarist, violinist and flutist. I was impressed. The food is good. I went here on a date with my husband, we love Spanish food.  The service was excellent, the entertainment so nice on the ears, The food was delish. I forget the name of what we ordered, it was the special that night,  a beef shank, stew thing, omg! It was the star! The veg paella could have been a little more flavorful and slightly more cooked.  The sangria was a little sweet for me I like more of a wine or brandy kick, but my husband loved it he did mention that he wished there was more fruit in it.. Other than that, everything else was pretty yummy I'd totally go back, and my picky hubby who never likes anything said he wants to go back too, so yay more date nights for us. It was lunchtime, I was at my company's Tampa office, and the talk of food began. Somehow this restaurant's name popped up and the rest is history.Ended up ordering one of their lunch specials. It was $10 or so and it was so large that I had leftovers. Had the roast pork lunch special that included the aforementioned roast pork, as well as white rice, black beans, and fried plantains. Now one of my coworkers knowing I come from Miami was hesitant about recommending this place to me. He kept going on about his time in Miami and how their pork is fabulous. Have to say that the pork from this restaurant is, too, and that surprises me. I had set the bar really low, but nope, I didn't have to pretend to like this pork. The pork was moist, juicy, and the type that I just wanted to repeatedly eat. The rice and beans were on par and the fried plantains had the perfect mix of crunch and sweetness. I was in heaven and all this in Tampa of all places. I am impressed and more impressed that I had two full meals. These people don't full around.Probably the one reason I don't give this place five stars is because I need to try more of their cuisine. That and I'm confused as to whether this is a Cuban or Spanish restaurant. Or maybe both. I don't know. More...

This gem is no secret. The food is authentic to Spain. The owners are Spanish and are at the restaurant every day except when their on vacation in Spain. Lunch is a typical Tampa Latino style la carte. Though you may also choose Tapas or any other item on their menu. At lunch, I'm partial to the stuffed white fish, yellow rice, black beans, fried sweet plantains and authentic beer from Spain. More...

Unsure about others experiences but we had a perfect dinner! Everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves around us as well. Our waitress was VERY attentive as were a few others that were lent necessarily "assigned" to our group of 5. We came before a show at the straz and everything was prompt and we got out in perfect timing. We had a mix of tapas and 2 entrees, some happy hour wines, an old fashioned, mojitos, the white sangria. It should be noted the drinks were not cloying but rather really balanced and highly drinkable! They also have bread at the tables which is always a nice gesture.Tapas: crab stuffed pimentos (the sauce so creamy and flavorful) and had actual good lumps of crab meat, the spicy potatoes which were SO good and seasoned perfectly, the croquetas were creamy and tasty and finally the empanadas which were flaky and had green olives in them which went so well with the beef and the tangy side sauce. Entrees: chicken and yellow rice - the chicken was ridiculously tender and juicy and seasoned so nicely, and the filete salteado - again, tender and juicy and full of flavor. We are already planning our next visit! Happy with everything and surprised by how affordable everything was considering how much we got!PS- we all loved the scrub in the bathroom :-) More...

This was not my intended dinner stop but, in walking along this street, I noticed some tables outside and a sign for Tapas Tuesday. Well, it's Tuesday so why not?! The $8 tapas specials offered 8 different options- to include Spanish tortilla (egg & potatoes), crab, mussels and several others. I ordered a red Sangria, mussels and tortilla and they didn't disappoint. My attentive waitress, Madeline, gave me great recommendations! The mussels were marinated and cooked in a rich, tangy tomato sauce. The tortilla was topped with fresh tomatoes, garlic, olive oil and crumbled manchego cheese. Two tapas, a fruity Sangria and way too much food for once person and a bill of only $21. Not only was this a steal, but the staff was kind, the food was incredible and sitting outside on a warm night was a perfect end. More...

Found this restaurant on Yelp.  I don't know why it only has 3 1/2 stars.  It's clearly a 4-5 star experience.  The quality of the food and ingredients are 100% authentic Spanish.  Real Spanish not Cuban, dominican or Puerto Rican .  Not that that is bad, but this place is a Spanish restaurant.  They do have excellent Cuban style food for lunch a la Pipos.  More on that later.Dylan our waiter was professional and knowledgeable.  We had pulpo, bacalao croquettes,  tripe with garbanzo's  and a tapas size paella for dinner along with a Spanish crianza .My wife and I drove to Palm Beach and I wanted to bring lunch with us instead of stopping at the rest stop on the turnpike.  I was their first customer for lunch and I struck up a conversation with the manager.  He turned out to be the owner Fred.  Great guy.  We had a lot in common with Queens New York. All I can say is that this place is the real deal for authentic Spanish food from Spain!Makes a mean Cuban tooEverything was spot on.  The paella rice could of been better, but the ingredients were very good. Another flawless execution. The restaurant was created by a Galician man in the 80s and it has endured the test of time. When we came in (8/25) we were greeted by a man that described himself as the bartender. Although he was not our server he went out of his way to make sure we were comfortable in our table, explain all the beers and wine he had, and name off  the wines he carried not listed in the menu from the top of his head. There was a man playing the guitar beautifully- I would have come just for that. We ordered a pitcher of the sangria, a bottle wine and a number of things off the menu. First off: the wine was great and the bottles were priced on a reasonable mid-20s range. My husband is from the Basque Country in Spain and both of us were impressed by how delicious all of the food was. The stuffed peppers were the best thing I've eaten in at least a year. The only advice I'd offer this restaurant is: get Iberico ham. I know Galicians don't eat much of it, but Americans go nuts over it when they taste it and it would be a huge draw if you gave out very tiny samples when people sat down. More...

I can't speak much to the ambiance of the restaurant because the dinner I had was at 4 so the light outside was shining bright and it didn't have the romantic feel I was hoping for. My girlfriend and I both had the Pescado Al Límon and I would definitely go back there again for the food alone! Our server was great and respectful too! I just wouldn't choose it for special occasions. Maybe it would be different from if I were to go at a better time when it's dark out? Everything was really good, however, I liked the mushroom dish the best. The bread was also very fresh and good as well as useful to sop up the juices from our tapas. They have drink specials during happy hour so I would recommend trying to get there before 7pm.  Sangria and mojitos are $5.Apparently on the weekends they have music and dancing. It also looks like they have have a lunch buffet because there was a buffet line at the back of the restaurant. My wife and I dined at Spain on a Friday night in March. The decor is a little startling at first - white, white, white. But the table layout was great (not jammed together), and we like tapas, so we took a shot. Excellent meal all around. They offer traditional spanish tapas but with a kind of personal twist; for example, the Pulpo Gallego (octopus in olive oil and garlic) was tender served on a wooden board, rather than swimming in olive oil as many restaurants do. The paella was fantastic, and the potatas bravas were perfect. Added benefit - the most amazing flamenco guitarist we've ever heard. Definitely will repeat. More...

I had lunch at this restaurant during my business trip to Tampa in September and was quite pleased with the food. I went back to Tampa for a cruise vacation with my family including my parents and my in-laws, and decided to try their dinner. It was Friday night so the music was very loud and there was a big party there probably celebrating the holiday, so it wasn't a place to quietly enjoy your meal. We were given a small table on the side for a party of 6, and we almost left because my family was skeptical that we would receive good service given such a busy night and we were all tired from traveling across the country from California/Arizona to Florida that day. However, we decided to give it a try since we liked the attitude of our waiter, who told us that he would "make it work" for us despite the small table. He was very good in taking and putting in our orders before that big party started, so we got our food very quickly. The food was great and everyone enjoyed our tapas meal. I must applaud our waiter for such a positive and pleasant attitude to make us want to stay despite a small table and an apparently noisy and busy night. The music was a little too loud for us so I wouldn't recommend this place on Friday if you would prefer a nice quiet dinner, but we were able to finish our meal and get back to our hotel to rest very quickly thanks to our efficient waiter. Thank you. More...

The Spain was recommended to us by a friend. We had a great meal and the service was excellent. The music was very enjoyable and not too loud. We went on a Friday night and had a reservation but I don't think that we needed one as there were open a few open tables. It made for a very nice and enjoyable date night. More...

Stopped by a quick dinner before a show at the Tampa Theatre in July.  I had the Patatas Bravas and Empanadillas de Carne. My friend had a salad and Gambas a la Plancha. I have been talking about the empanadillas every since. I could have had nothing else and been really happy with my meal. It's a comfortable restaurant, the food was good (fresh and hot), and the staff was lovely. More...

The surprise of Spain Restaurant is the Flamenco Show. The ambiance is inviting and the service is outstanding (by Melvin Aguilar). The food is the closest to Spanish cuisine except for the excessive garlic used in excess on dishes that do not require it. The wine list is short but good and the bar could use some original Spanish liquors and dessert wines. In general we had a great time and would return again. More...

We went to Spain with a group of clients for a convention. The bar area was quite busy but the people there, were part of the convention we were attending, so it was loud but a lot of fun.We came with the intention of ordering dinner, but we filled up on so many great tapas that we never ordered a main meal. The tapas were awesome! The croquetas and the crab cakes were to die for ! The only thing better was the Mango Mojito's, They were heavenly!! My wife, adult son, and I returned to Spain Restaurant. We had dined here numerous times previously and always enjoyed great tapas, wine, and flamenco guitar. Our server was less than adequate... when asked about the sauce on an entre he responded incorrectly that it was tomato based, I ordered and he delivered a dish which was not tomato based! I twice requested a water refill. I urged him to bring us more wine when the bottle was empty. None of these things should ever happen in a restaurant as nice and as pricey as Spain. We did inform the hostess who insisted that the same server bring us a birthday dessert (the special occasion we were celebrating). We will return, but I will be more selective in my server. More...

I got Ropa Vieja (spelling? old clothes but in Spanish.) with yellow rice. This place is obviously a locals favorite and most people here know each other. The lady in front of me was a repeat customer and told the guy behind the counter how she had seen him dancing with his wife at the music festival the night before. My food was very good but it was only lukewarm. Minus a star for food not being hot but it was very good. More...

This is a Spain cuisine restaurant with music venue at weekend. You can book a private event. It is quite a busy booking. Sometimes the booking is a wedding rehearsal or baby shower. The food of the restaurant is average for Spain cuisine. But I would say try their tapas. It is great to enjoy their tapas at the weekend and have some wine with live flamenco guitar music. They have the music every week end. Please check their calendar. The reason they are four stars is they have the flamenco dance and dinner show on every month. The show team has three female dancers and one male dancer. Man oh man! They are good. Very move is a posture of art. The flamenco guitar add the twist of the show. It almost like a whole band. I would said this is the best flamenco show in the Bay Area. More...

I decided to try someplace new to me on the way to a Lightening Game and I love tapas, so this is the place I chose.  What a find!First, the ambiance.  The restaurant has a sleek, modern feel to it and appeared very clean and comfortable.  A solo guitarist playing Spanish-styled instrumentals set the mood ~ not too loud, not too quiet, just right.  I was there with a friend, but there were several couples and it would make a great place to have a date night. We arrived around 6:30 pm and they have happy hour from 4-7 pm with $4 sangria and my friend had the red and I had the white.  They were both very good, so I would get there before 7 pm, if possible.  They had other happy hour specials too, but I can't remember what they were. Now the food...  We started with the "tapas tasting" off the entree menu to share.  We asked our server, Dillon, for some suggestions and it must have been kismet because he recommended three of the four things we had discussed when reviewing the menu on the way to the restaurant.  His recommendations were spot on.We got the Pulpo a la Gallega, the Filete de Res and the Paella Valenciana.  The Pulpo a la Gallega was fantastic.  I love octopus when it is cooked correctly and can't stand it when it is not.  The octopus was cooked absolutely perfectly and the olive oil, garlic and paprika were ideally balanced to showcase the flavor rather than detract from it. The Filete de Res was also a perfectly balanced concoction of beef tenderloin, mushrooms and a sherry wine flambe.  Sublime!  The paella was also incredible with a good proportional mixture of ingredients. At this point, we were getting pretty full, so we just decided to order a couple more tapas and walk off our meal on the way to the game.  This time we got the Champiñones Extravaganza and the Empanadas de Carne.  The sauce on the mushrooms was absolutely sinful.  it was extremely rich and very filling, but we just couldn't tear ourselves away from the plate.  The empanadas were also superb, with a perfect beef mixture inside.Overall, a splendid pick for a winning combination of service, atmosphere and marvelous food! I had two wonderful dinners at Spain on a recent trip to Tampa. First night: blackened mahi grilled and seasoned to perfection. Second evening: paella Valencia (seafood scramble)... All I can say is yum. The hosts, Fred and John, and the whole staff are as friendly as anyone can be. After two visits and a few Estrellas I felt like a regular. Added bonus: I stayed upstairs at an Airbnb rental unit...they even offered to deliver food and drinks to my door! But no matter where you stay, you'll go right if you eat here. More...
