This is the best workout experience I've ever had. The workouts target all the different muscle groups. The trainers are extremely knowledgable about fitness and proper form. I'm a cancer survivor and participate in the THRIVE group for over 50s. The workouts are modified so that I get the most benefit based on my fitness level. It's also FUN! Chrissy and Shane promote community and activities for members. Great atmosphere, fun workouts and great people. This is my choice for best workout experience in Knoxville! More...

I have been doing CrossFit for over 3 years now, and from my experiences, South Landing is a one of a kind gym. Owners Shane and Crissy Glarrow are two of the most knowledgeable coaches in Knoxville, not just in terms of CrossFit, but in terms of overall health and wellness. Both owners have extensive experience in CrossFit, not only as coaches/owners, but also as athletes. They have created an environment that focuses on wholistically bettering yourself, while not treating fitness like a product. In my two years here, neither of them have ever compared me to another person or athlete, or used a different person’s fitness level as a goal for me. Rather, they individualize goals to suit their clients. South Landing also features other knowledgeable coaches Billy and Megh, who both (along with Shane) have their L2 coaching certifications. Every coach at South Landing emphasizes proper form above perceived performance. They will push you to your limits and improve you as an athlete, but they do so in a way that does not harm your body or overwork you. I believe this is why South Landing has a very small number of yearly injuries as opposed to other CrossFit gyms. They somehow maintain a hardworking, fun environment while simultaneously demanding an emphasis on safety. The price is very standard for a CrossFit gym, however, with how coaches put aside their own time to help clients with nutrition, overall well-being, and mental health, often times for free, I believe that it is well worth the value. Everyone on staff has done an unbelievable job creating the best environment possible for anyone looking to improve their lives. More...

The coaches emphasize safety and scaling workouts to your ability while still making the workout challenging. The members here are some of the nicest people I have ever met, and have become some of my closest friends. What I have loved about Crossfit that most people don't know is that it is truly for anyone! Crissy is so good about asking what your individual goals are and then tailoring what you do to achieve your goals. I am a 57 year old grandmother of 5 and I want to work on my strength and flexibility and maintain a healthy weight. Crissy doesn't have me working toward crazy lifting goals because that doesn't fit my overall goals. I want to be healthy and able to be active and do things with my grandkids. I would recommend South Landing Crossfit to anyone...don't be intimated by the 'Crossfit' brand. South Landing CrossFit is a CrossFit gym. So, what does that mean? Does it mean that you have to be able to do multiple push-ups and pull-ups or be able to lift 300 lbs. ? The answer to that question is ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Before I tell you what I think about CrossFit and more importantly about this particular gym, I will admit something. I once thought that only people who were super athletes, muscle bound, fiercely intense and very competitive did CrossFit and that was no place for someone like me. Someone who has struggled with their weight since they were 5, never once played a sport, and was absent of any muscle definition. However, I had a friend that owned a CrossFit gym in another state and he kept trying to talk me into going to one. Finally, I agreed.

I went to a local CrossFit gym in North Carolina for at least 3 days, but never once walked through the door. I set in the parking lot and watched very fit people walk through the door and never saw anyone that looked like me. At that point, I determined that CrossFit indeed was not for someone like me. So, I went on with my normal life, struggling with my weight and not happy about it. Until one day I was 426 lbs. and very depressed. I decided at that point I needed to ask for help. For me, this help came as a gastric sleeve surgery to help me lose the weight.

In preparation for the surgery, I started going to a gym and spending a lot of time on the treadmill. I kept up this activity after the surgery and even added some work on some of the weight machines. The weight started coming off fast and it was great. This lasted for a while and I lost around 130 pounds. Although then something happened, the weight stopped going down. Since I was not seeing progress, I started slipping back into some bad habits. Then I went through a stressful relocation to Knoxville and that resulted into some more bad habits and even slipping some on going to the gym. To be completely honest, I was in a bad place physically and mentally. I felt truly broken.

Knowing I needed a change I was again went seeking help. I started going to therapy, seeing a holistic Dr. to assist with my nutrition and health and I also bought a Groupon for a CrossFit gym. This is where I met Crissy and Shane who are the owners of South Landing CrossFit. Crissy and Shane taught me that CrossFit was for everyone and it was not about what you couldn’t do, but what you could do. I didn’t have to be able to do push-ups, pull-ups and lift 300 lbs. However, I could still do all the workouts everyone else was doing, sometimes at a lighter weight or a slightly different movement, but still the same workout. I also learned quickly that I was not the only one who had to do their workouts this way. It was actually very common and very acceptable.
Also, the members of the gym were so helpful to me and I can’t tell you how many times they cheered me on to finish my workout or even joined me after theirs was finished. I felt like I was supposed to be exactly right there and I NEVER once felt judged by anyone. In fact, CrossFit gyms are such a judgment free place you won’t even find mirrors on the walls in any CrossFit gym or at least the 10 or so I have visited.

I have been doing CrossFit for almost 2 years now and I switched to South Landing CrossFit when it opened. I really missed working with Crissy and Shane, on almost a daily basis, because they made me a better person each day. They picked me up when I was down (physically and mentally), they cheered me when I was booing myself. They were always there to remind me of how far I have come and for that I am forever thankful. They played such a part in fixing this broken man I had to come and continue my journey with them as they started this new journey of their own.

This gym is no different, it has great group of normal people, who have to scale the workouts to fit them just like I still do for me. There is no judgment and no pressure to be something that you are not. It is just great people helping each other be the best that they can be. So, do not be like the old me and put off something that may in fact change your life. Come try their free 7 day trial, you have nothing to lose, except for some weight and maybe even some emotional baggage.

P.S. I still struggle with my weight and I still cannot do pull-ups and probably a couple of dozen other movements. However, the difference is, I am perfectly fine with that. I have learned that it is the journey that matters not the destination and CrossFit and Crissy and Shane have played a large part in me learning it.

Note: I would have posted a before and after picture, but I don’t have a brain scan that shows how much my self-image, confidence, pride and overall happiness have increased.
