We visited Soby’s Dec 23 for dinner. The restaurant was decorated for Christmas a bit as you entered. A little Christmas or evergreen arrangement on each table would be nice. A bottle of water on the table with no ice. Tepid water was unexpected. Nice drinks from the bar. Good wine lost. Delicious spinach and artichoke dip served with warm homemade potato chips. Delicious!Dinner served later and I love that they paced the dishes apart. Duck breast perfectly heavenly and moist. Yummy sides! Pork tenderloin wrapped in uncooked or limp bacon - three nice size portions. Mashed potatoes and perfect squash made for good to the last bite. You must ask for the dessert menu - it was not offered and was not offered coffee. Overall very nice time. Pretty hardwood with exposed brick walls. I visited Soby's when I was in town to see a friend. We went there to celebrate her birthday, and the overall experience was excellent from the moment we got there. Our server was friendly and very knowledgable of the menu. The sommelier recommended a delicious pinot grigio for us, and we shared a bottle. I ordered the BBQ shrimp and grits, and I was wowed. It was so good, and I was impressed with the amount of shrimp. The grits were the best I've ever had. My friends all enjoyed the short ribs. If I lived closer, I would definitely go back. I found this place on Yelp and it's on the Main Street close to the Falls Park on the Reddy, so I decided to give it a try. I went to the hostess who said I could choose to either sit in the bar area with the TVs to watch the football game or in the main dining room. Since I was eating alone, I decided to go to the bar area. There were four table tops occupied and 7 people at the bar. I sat for 15 minutes, no one came up to give a menu. So I moved to a table directly in front of the bar. The two bartenders were busy making drinks but also chatting up with the patrons sitting at the bar, not acknowledging me. So after about another 10 minutes, I got up and went to the hostess and asked for a table. As she was about to show me a table, one bartender came up, apologized for the delay saying they were very busy. She walked me back to the bar table and grabbed me some menus. I ordered the Soby's She Crab Soup and steamed mussels. Both dishes were phenomenal. The crab soup was very buttery, rich, and creamy. Only drawback is the soup was warm but not hot. I was starving so I just scarfed it down without mentioning it to the wait staff. The steamed mussels are in a piquillo pepper cream sauce with lots of herbs and crispy bacon. It came with one slice of toasted bread which was not nearly enough! Definitely ask for extra bread to mop up all that great sauce. When it came to requesting the check, I think there was confusion between the two waitresses in the bar area because I asked one for it twice but it didn't come and then the other waitress finally asked me if I needed anything and got me the check. I will say, they were both very nice when they give you attention, but I think they may just need a third waitress/bartender to man that area. If I could give 4.5 stars I would. Classic restaurant that provides an essential Greenvile cuisine experience. Staff are nice and everything is quality. My only complaint would be the smoke that accumulates on the 2nd floor. Go 1st floor if smoke bothers you. If they had better smoke (from cooking) ventilation and got a little more creative with hosting bigger parties effectively this would be a 5+ star rating. We had a large dinner party and between smoke and accommodations it wasn't a 5 star experience. I have been in smaller groups downstairs and had 5 star visits depending of menu and drink rotations. In town for a Peace Center event. Happy hour mini crab cakes were almost all crab meat and delicious. Wine was pretty pricey if not on the happy hour menu. We also had the mussels and blackened fisf.
