My wife and I stopped in here last night for dinner after work.  We parked out front on the street and walked in to find that we were the only customers in the restaurant.  So of course we picked the best seat in the house by the window.  We were promptly greeted with a smile and menus by one of the restaurant owners.  For an appetizer, we chose both the guacamole and the queso.  The guacamole is made fresh once it is ordered and tastes amazing.  So smooth and flavorful.  The queso is mixed with chorizo and once it arrives at your table, they light it on fire.  I guess it helps to melt the cheese, but it's just cool to watch.  Either way, the queso is amazing and comes with about 4 small tortilla shells to eat it with.  It happened to be Taco Tuesday last night, so there was a separate menu with about 5 different tacos to choose from.  I chose the shrimp, the chorizo, and the oyster mushroom tacos.  I was very pleased with all three of them and it should be noted that the shrimp taco has a bit of a fiery bite to it.  Be prepared.  For dessert we split an order of the churros, which come with a raspberry sauce and chocolate sauce for dipping.  The churros are crunchy and sugary on the outside, yet warm and fluffy on the inside, and were a perfect end to our meal.  On a side note, this place is a gem and needs more advertising (or a sign outside), because while we were there, only one other couple came in to dine.  I hope that the traffic is better on other days of the week to help keep this location open for a long time. I have to say, I am (now officially) a huge fan of Semilla! My first experience was so good, and I am already imagining what will be on Spring 2019's menu! The venue may not be upscale but there's a quaintness and coziness about Semilla that I appreciate. We visited Semilla on Saturday evening (with a reservation). There was a not a wait. I assume that this will become an issue when Semilla startsGrilled Oysters (5/5) - We started with grilled oysters. Usually we cannot share grilled oysters because cheese is heavily used in this dish as a topping, and dear husband is not a fan of cheese. Luckily, Semilla's version only uses crema; we were willing to give it a try, and we are so glad we did. The poblano peppers, Mezcal, crema, breadcrumbs, and lime toppings were dancing in my mouth. Such great flavors! I only wished the oysters were larger! Tacos (4/5) - I opted for the three tacos for dinner. Since there were three to choose from, I got one of each (i.e. Carne Asada, Pescado, Crispy Brussels Sprouts). Although the carne asada and pescado (fried fish, in this case) were both delicious, there was definitely a winner! Surprisingly, my favorite was the brussels. I did not think a brussels taco could taste just as flavorful as a meaty taco. The combination of the crispy brussels and the slices of apple is sublime! I could've definitely eaten a few more brussels tacos.Crispy Duck Leg (5/5) - My husband thoroughly enjoyed this dish. I tried a bit of the duck, and it was tender and fall-off-the-bone delightful. The sweet potato mash was so good that I told my husband, "I would've been a less fussy baby if baby food tasted like that". The staff was polite and provided great service. The food was bursting with flavor. Semilla lends itself to be a perfect date or double date spot! They have done - Jill and her brother , team done a fantastic job- Great job by Scotty -also the Director/Management from Charleston Yelp area - all like super super - cant describe the words. Jill was extremely busy even to take her own dishes pictures, but she went out of the way to do Veggie item in spite of her busy schedule. This kind of gestures should never be forgotten. if i sleep without this, karma and consicous would sleep -tomorrow something happen... My friends and I went in for dinner last Saturday and were blown away. The owner is right back behind the bar in an open-kitchen concept preparing all of the food right as you order it. The vibe, presentation, and most importantly the flavors are all incredible. It honestly feels like you're going over to your friends house- but your friend happens to be a badass chef- and this is his tasting menu party. After just one visit, Semilla is on my favorite list--one of the most incredible restaurants I have been to. This was the best spot we dined at this weekend, and to me deserves more hype than Husk. Semilla has a great concept, flawlessly executed with delicious food and drink, excellent service and ambiance. I generally think all "good" guac tastes the same but theirs is next level. Their brussel sprout taco is what dreams are made of. So much love packed into each bite. (Can't imagine how cumbersome they are to make!) The rice bowl we ordered was also exceptional. I had a severe craving tacos and I'm not even pregnant! Semilla fulfilled my hankering with carnitas, Brussels sprouts, fish and brisket tacos! Even though we arrived 5 minutes before happy hour ended, they granted our drinks with happy hour prices. I even requested the happy hour taco as one of the entree tacos. The order must have had a little hiccup, but they easily fixed it by bringing out the requested taco immediately so I got to try 4 different tacos! The happy hour prices alone would get me in the door, but the food was genuinely so delicious. I tried a variety of tacos, which I understand change seasonally, and all three were so creative. Currently they have a crispy Brussels sprout taco that was my favorite. My bf and I also tried the mini quesadilla which was hatch chili’s and sweet corn and I could eat 50 of them happily. Great food, even better people!! I have recently been to a few events where Semilla was showcasing 1 or 2 of their dishes. They have a phenomenal take on Mexican cuisine including great tacos that pack a ton of flavor, nachos with a homemade cheese sauce that doesn't taste like nacho cheese out of the can, and a sweet corn and farro risotto with grilled pork belly. The decor is so great in this hidden gem on the west side! I had a couple tacos that were great and my friend and I shared the queso which was served flaming and was cool and different! I would highly recommend this place! Our server had longish blonde hair and was great and very attentive as well! We went for taco Tuesday so all tacos were $3! They didn't have their liquor license yet but they have wine and beer, which includes a 32 oz Victoria! I would definitely recommend!! More...

I had Semilla tonight for the first time at 1000 West Apartments tonight and got the lunchbox. PHENOMENAL!! Coming from California, I was bummed when I moved to Charleston a year ago and couldn’t find any decent tacos - until today! Just tried out Semilla (after already being a huge fan of Daps) for Taco Tuesday and I am blown away. The tacos, which are normally $4, were $3 each and just incredible. I had a vegan bowl at the Nexton Piccolo Spoleto event. It had rice, black beans, red cabbage, Brussels Sprouts and avocado. It was beautifully composed and SUPER delicious. Can wait to find y’all again. Two huge thumbs up.

Updated: Finally got in there to try a taco. Amazing, I had the Fish Taco- Grouper, slaw cucumber cilantro, it was amazing. Perfect crunchy juicy cook on the fish, wonderful fresh toppings. Also had the cucumber, ginger lime fresca, addictive. This place is wonderful, and will definitely be a regular place to go.
Went back today, broadened my menu orders to include a Chicken taco, and a fish taco. The chicken is amazing in its own special way, it has a spice, flavor and texture palate all its own. They dont just replace the protein. Looking forward to going again. More...
