This place is truly a staple for Portland. The service the attitude and the vibe is spot on! The food is great here with great flavor and nice balance of each one. The waffle was not a stiff waffle on the chicken and waffles, but more on the soft side. I am not a fan of the soft waffle with that. Also got the French toast that was excellent! I would try that again! A nice sweet flavor with a bit of savory toward the end. The biscuits and gravy was good but not mind blowing. I felt it lacked pepper. The meat was the and the sauce consistency was on point. I just needed something to round it out. I felt the vegetable scramble was a bit odd. The potatoes were over cooked and crunchy and burnt. The dish didn’t make sense with the red sauce. I would return. More...

I brought the family there last night. Delicious Southern food in the neighborhood. There is usually a wait. If you can, try to go as late as possible to shorten it. Place is nice but not too upscale, food and service are excellent. It has a great bar too. I have been going for many years. The menu changed a little and the dishes layout too. I honestly preferred the old classic menu. On a good note, fried okra is still done the same way, and still one of my favorites. More...

There is a reason Screen Door is on every "must visit when in Portland" list. The menu is packed with rock-solid comfort food. It's always busy but the kitchen is on point. I ordered the lauded Chicken & Waffle (made even more delicious thanks to the addition of sweet potato BTW) and it was perfection. Piled high with crispy and juicy chicken, I just had to take a picture. Add a Blood Orange Mimosa and you are set for the day! More...

The interior was the cutest, hometown type diner. Best fried chicken I’ve ever had. It was juicy on the inside and crispy with a great flavor on the outside. Service was excellent, our coffee and water never got below halfway. The wait can be long and the waiting area is small so get there early! They also have a counter to sit at, which may or may not be first come first serve. More...

Came here specifically for the chicken -n- waffles. It did not disappoint! Got the one piece option. Beware: the chicken is HUMONGOUS! Not a bad thing at all, it’s basically the size of the plate. I can’t imagine ordering any of the larger orders, as I had trouble just getting through mine. The chicken is perfect. Breading has black pepper, and is tasty. The waffle is great too. Enjoy! Excellent! My family loved the food. I liked the pick 3 items for $16 part of the menu. It allowed me to pick the meal I wanted. The broccoli was so delicious. Very busy for a Tuesday night, a good sign that people love this place. The desserts were all home made, which is rare these days. The people beside us ordered the banana pie and it looked amazing. We were all too full for dessert. My son did not like the kids meal burger, and he knows his burgers, so I would avoid that. Other than that, highly recommended! More...

This is my absolute favorite place to go. The kitchen is against the wall you can see the staff working together while you mingle. The wait is something to be improved upon. If you have a party of 6 or more you can call ahead and reserve a spot which will cut down the wait time by an hour or two. Everyone including myself loves the chicken fried steak, but this last time I had gone I got the trout which was even better than the chicken. I live in Washington. This place is worth a 2.5 hour drive. More...

Good comfort food, and pretty reasonably priced for the most part. It's a great place to go with groups of family and friends, the food is very shareable and encourages talking. The space can feel kind of dark and gloomy though unless you sit on the patio, since there aren't very many windows. This is nice sometimes because it keeps it cool in the summer and cozy in the winter, but it can also be kind of depressing The staff are very nice though, even when I came near closing they insisted on serving me and were courteous the whole time and didn't rush me. Overall a good place for a fun bite to eat. More...

We came here for breakfast early on a weekday, and were fortunate to not encounter the wait times so many reviews have mentioned. Our server was super sweet and very helpful.

I had the fried chicken biscuit sandwich and my husband had the Alabama scramble. We both agreed that my sandwich was the "winner" of the two dishes, the sausage gravy was excellent and the fried chicken was executed very well. That being said, our favorite thing from the meal was the cheddar grits. They were creamy and flavorful and I wish I could have them every day.

Decor is very charming and the bottomless coffee is also very good.

What a great place to eat Southern inspired food! The Pimento cheese appetizer was a perfect starter. The fried chicken was moist and the batter was crunchy. I loved piling my fork with a bite of chicken and running it through the mashed potatoes and gravy. Our side of asparagus in meyer lemon sauce still had the perfect snap to them. I thought it couldn't be topped until they brought out the banana caramel pie. Do NOT miss this dish. The best banana pie I've ever had outside of the South. The hype and line are definitely in tandem with one another, but unsure if the actual performance holds to the high praise. The service was incredible, and food was remarkably average. The fried chicken and waffles were both enjoyable entities, but definitely didn't knock my socks off in any manner. The hush puppies left a lot to be desired in the realm of flavor components. I definitely enjoyed the lively atmosphere, but won't be rushing back. More...

Echoing other reviewers, come here and you'll be served impressive Southern cuisine. Several recommendations prompted us to seek out Screen Door, and we weren't displeased with the results.

The chicken & waffle was most excellent, although I did think the salt was a bit overdone and unnecessary.

The mac 'n cheese was tasty, satisfying, with deep flavors. A thin layer of crispy cheese on top was delightful.

After chatting with the bartender I got a Caesar (a Canadian variant of a Bloody Mary, with clam juice). It was beyond excellent!

Cheerful and attentive servers, pleasant vibe, and reasonably good prices. I'm looking forward to a return visit!

Amazing, must go in Portland. I definitely plan on coming back for my next visit.

Food: 5 stars. The biscuit chicken sandwich, fried oysters poboy, and black berry lemonade was delicious. Not to forget, the cheese grits that come with them. The sausage gravy on the chicken was perfect, not too salty and great proportion.

There is a lot of food, so if not too hungry, I suggest sharing.

We went on Saturday around 1030, and it was a 30 minute wait so not too bad!

Service: regular, nothing special but were nice.

Best times to go are earlier in the morning to have little to no wait, waited almost an hour on a Saturday, and about 20 minutes on a Wednesday. This is NOT their fault, they make amazing food that a ton of people want to enjoy, so go in ready for this! I’ve had their chicken and waffles, ranked some of the best in Portland, and it’s AMAZING! The pieces of chicken are HUGE, so come ready to eat. A lot. The lemon ricotta pancake things are amazing, especially with the seasonal berry sauce hey jane with them. We stopped in for dinner on a beautiful Saturday night here in Portland. And if you haven't guessed it by reading other reviews, this place is popular, so expect a wait. We arrived a little past 7 and were seated close 8PM, but that's not bad considering other local places that might have up to a 2 hour wait. That aside, I'll be up front... if you're looking for an intimate dining experience, this is not the place for you. It has an open floor plan, and there is little privacy as the tables are within inches of each other. Had a hard time conversing with my wife - it was that loud. Moving on, the food and service were both awesome. Our waiter, Brian, was solid. He was very knowledgeable, friendly and attentive. Probably the best waiter we've had in the last year at least. Food seemed pretty authentic. I tried the catfish, and it was similar to what I had when I lived in Atlanta. Good stuff. All in all, this place is worth visiting. Try to get a seat out on the patio - probably worth the extra wait on a sunny day. We'll definitely pop again to see if we can hit the 5-star experience. More...
