Really fantastic food. Had the fixed menu with pairing and everything was amazing except the timing. The waitress was bringing out dishes well before we were done with the previous dish. A small issue, but for $250/person, the little things matter. More...

Roe is hands down the best restaurant I've ever eaten at. This place was an incredible journey of food. I can not even call it a restaurant but, the closest thing to heaven on a plate I've tasted. The staff here is incredible, our server McKenzie was so kind and wonderful. Chef John Conlin is a culinary artist. Thank you to all at Roe for making our experience one we will never forget- we will be back as soon as we can! More...

Went to celebrate my partner's birthday. Roe is a great special occasions place. Great food, great service, great experience. We especially liked the four amuse bouche before the first course. They were probably the best tasting part of the meal - especially the lightly smoked opah belly and tuna tartare wrap. More...

I love Roe! I’ve gone there twice now to celebrate my birthday and want to keep this tradition. This year was extra special because I brought my parents and Roe accommodated then by assigning us a wonderful staff member who explained everything in Spanish! We felt so welcomed. Roe makes you feel special. It has a chic, high end Portland vibe, but it’s not overbearing. Quiet, serene environment. The wine list was next level, you can tell it was carefully thought out by a sommelier and the staff is well informed of its contents. We were greeted with a personalized card and small cocktail on the house. I will definitely be returning! More...

OUTSTANDING! I’ve been fortunate enough to experience top restaurants around the world. This is one of the top 10, and, for me, a better experience than French Laundry. First off I would like to start this review off with, WOW. It's hard to figure out where to start because there were so many elements playing together at such a high level that make this such a special dining experience. The waiting area is homely with aperitifs and a card for your party. The dining area is not crammed but feels intimate at the same time with great ambiance. The servers, who rotated roles and from table to table, were truly excellent in every regard. The food was the star of the show, every plate was very well balanced and nuanced, every part of every plate was nice but within each bit combined come together delightfully. Quantity was also surprising as we left completely full.If there was a drawback, nearly $500 for two with drinks and caviar service (wine pairings would have been north of $600) this place is not cheap. However, taking the experience and food quality into account, Roe is an excellent value. We got well what we paid for and more.We will have to come back every time they change the menu... at least. The best dining experience I have had in Portland. After eating the salmon I thought "this is it, that's the best fish I've ever had" but then they brought out the seabass, which was somehow even more delicious. Last week we had the pleasure of attending the soft open of Roe at its new location in Morgan's Alley (downtown Portland). The atmosphere was remarkable. I shouldn't use a simple word as "delicious" to describe the 12-course meal of seafood and wine pairings. That wouldn't do the evening justice. Rather, I would say that a dinner at Roe is an experience of culinary delights unmatched by any other restaurant in Portland. I cannot recommend it enough. More...

Anyone who knows Roe will agree it’s a no-nonsense gastronomic experience. Roe 2.0 is no different. The creativity of the dishes is in short, incredible. Each pairing of ingredients is totally unique, but without feeling forced; It’s about harmony, rather than flash. Oyster with uni sauce? Meant to be. Lamb and scallop tartare? A revelation of “surf and turf”. And as the night goes on, the dishes just get better and better. Abalone goes surprisingly perfectly with sake mushroom butter and a bit of pear. The nairagi was exquisitely smoked, leaving me wondering if fish could actually maintain that kind of meaty flavor. But the last dish, the seared walu, was to die for. Perfectly cooked to that wonderful melt-in-your-mouth feeling only good fish can bring. I would’ve come just for that dish alone. Then the dessert of the night was meant to bring you back to your roots with a fun take on an ice cream sundae, complete with diy ingredients such as hot fudge, homemade butterfinger, honey comb, pineapple and lightly coconut ice cream. In each dish, the aesthetic is always present and on point, but the main focus is taste as good food always should be.As far as atmosphere goes: the new and improved Roe brings the old restaurant to new levels while still maintaining the same cozy atmosphere. Those who are fans of the ‘speakeasy feel’ will love entering the building, as sneak peeks of Roe can be seen on the floor above as you walk past little shops just closing up for the night. I don’t want to give any spoilers, but the new way of entering the actual restaurant escalates the experience of Roe. It feels like being pampered, and then you are graciously led to the food, spectacular as always. More...

Roe is simply phenomenal. The food is art - both to the eye and the tongue. Every course is special, the meal unfolding like a well-crafted story. The combinations of ingredients chef Trent conceives are inventive, surprising, delightful. This a restaurant that you want to savor, like a well-guarded secret. Refined, balanced, consistent. Roe is so exceptional, even friends who don't particularly enjoy seafood were blown away by the quality of the meal. Twice now, we have dined here and found that each time was equally spectacular. The dishes are masterfully created to ride the perfect balances of textures and flavours, while the wine pairings were nothing less than inspired. Truly, our dinners here are easily in our top 5 meals of all time. Roe is now solidly in our back pocket as a place to wow any visitors or locals.***Edited for 3rd trip, NYE 2017: Now three of the best meals I've had. Roe's new location is now open and the team is providing the same exceptional service and flavours as ever before. I dare anyone to find a better meal in Portland. My wife, her 16yo daughter and I endulged in the 8 course option just before xmas. I won't attempt to elaborate beyond what the most recent reviewers have said about the food other than to enthusiastically endorse the praise they heaped on every aspect of the experience. So let me address the $155 price tag (that includes service, and in our case a waived $30 corkage fee) for the privilege of experiencing this place. I reside in the Napa/SF part of California where more often than not the price of a meal gets jacked up by 33%--20%tip, 9% tax, 4% " emplyee health benifit"!!? Which means this actual 10 course meal would come in at $120 in SF. I can assure you the actual price would approach $200 in SF, before the 33% add-ons. This is a long winded way of saying I felt the $155 was a steal. One of the issues I had with the prior incarnation of Roe was that there was little change in the tasting menu over the months. I was assured the menu will be changing weekly going forward. Don't miss this place! More...

The food is good, price is fair, but the service pacing needs major improvement. The time between serving each course is too long and varies to much. I was there for 2 hours for this 4-course dinner. Dined late last Friday evening during a weekend trip to Portland.Summary: spectacular evening and one of the better meals I've had. This was such a unique dining experience. Roe is tucked away in the back of Block and Tackle, which has a nondescript storefront. Don't be fooled...once ushered past the threshold into Roe, you have entered a culinary world unto itself. Tiny, cozy, intimate space, with sultry lighting, and an open kitchen layout. We were not fortunate enough to score one of the coveted, and extremely limited, time slots for the full 7-course menu, but were incredibly satisfied with the 4-course (Raw | Shellfish | Fin Fish | Dessert)Butterfish Sashimi with frozen foie gras flakes - next level umami; never tasted anything quite like this. INSANELY good. 5/5Scallops - the only merely "very good" dish, which, while excellent, paled in comparison to the others. 4/5Ora King Salmon: olive oil poached salmon, roast chanterelle, apple, lardon, braised daikon, bacon-yuzu kosho sauce - some of the most exquisitely prepared fish I've ever tasted, with extremely complimentary accompaniments. 5/5Bread course - Excellent! Free refills. :) 4.5/5Desserts - both excellent 4.5/5Beverage pairing - appropriate choices which all paired well; well worth the $65.Now...what truly set this night apart was the world-class service. All servers were excellent, intuitive, and anticipatory, but a special shout-out to Salvadore Perdomo, the Wine Director for Roe. Salvadore isn't a Master Sommelier, but he could have fooled me. His demeanor, knowledge base, and communication style are so on-point, they are almost mesmerizing. Due in no small part to our extensive interaction with Salvadore throughout the evening, I would place the service at Roe on par with any I have received, including that at French Laundry.Roe is soon moving to a downtown location, and next time we are in Portland, we will most definitely return. Kudos to the entire team at Roe, and huzzah to Trent Pierce and Patrick Shultz for their execution, attention to detail, innovation, and passion!Food: 4.5/5Ambiance: 4.5/5Service: 5/5Value: 4/.5/5 More...

Roe, roe, row your food, gently to my plate. Merrily, merrily, merrily, merrily, I’ll tell you what I ate.Originally hidden, speakeasy style in the back of Block & Tackle/Wafu they have expanded to open B&T Oyster Bar. Roe is still within and wholly separate.Fixed menu Wednesday-Saturday a la Noma, French Laundry and other high end establishments. Full bar and beverage actually adds to the experience. Instead of me being a beer and cocktail snob I opted for the full beverage service getting wine pairings and Italian aperitif and digestif. I had temptations to request specifics like Fernet or Strega, but thought it might offend the time they spent cultivating their menu and pairings.Service is excellent. The menu and pairings well thought out and creative. There is something in having access to the kitchen and talking with chef’s that communicates the passion they bring to the dishes instead of an explanation from front house staff. That enthusiasm and gesturing of the techniques used is something you can’t replicate. With that you are at their timing mercy. It’s not some 6 cook staff being overseen by a chef, but 2 chef’s taking care of everything. The wine is the real value here, you’ll probably make money from them based on what they offer and what you buy. It’s dim, dark and quiet, compared to B&T. The menu’s take time. My 1st trip I did the 4 course and 2nd 7 course. 1st time wine pairings and 2nd time full beverage and caviar which really pushed the budget out of reach. I actually got an extra 3 and 4 courses on each trip.I don’t recall the specifics due to lag in review, but I had geoduck with a sweet citrus sauce, Dungeness crab in which I called ahead to ask for the cab fat so I could eat with their fantastic complimentary bread. A little butter and bread and crab inners, boom. The variety of high end ingredients they use to plate and garnish is top notch, it’s amazing they get this done without a full kitchen. Urchin and scallops are common on the menu. Ora Salmon, blue prawn with yuzu,. Octopus, and marlin crudo. I could go on and on. The course that lacked both times was dessert. I had them make a few “honeymoon” drinks and got some craft beer between courses because even at 8 courses over 2 hours there is some definite lull’s even with food conversation. Due to my night being extended so much longer I ended up getting food around midnight and delivered afterwards to my hotel. It’s a top notch restaurant I recommend to any seafood and drinks lover, just make reservations a few months in advance. Looking for a place to spoil your significant other? Want to feel like a VIP? Roe is sure to impress and as its title suggests, is a wonderful exploration of fish. I expect it will be nothing like anything you have experienced in this genre. Firstly this place is hidden, hence the VIP feeling. You enter through Block & Tackle, then through a large curtain and doorway into a secret medium sized room with 10 or so tables. The decor is warmly lit, modern Japanese style, with a hint of Portland’s exposed beam aesthetic. The focal point being the two well appointed chefs calmly assembling dishes in front of a magnificent antique Japanese print. A hand-painted gold tree mural balances the other wall. Now on to the food. This is a two hour non-rushed high-end experience, so plan accordingly. You can pick from a price-fix menu of 4 courses and we chose to get more or less one of everything to share. The food seems to progress from raw to lightly cooked, each dish complementing and out-doing each other. Food is delicately prepared for visual interest and with an exquisitely balanced flavor profile. It was hard to choose my favourite dish! There are hints of many influences but Asian and French seem to predominate, extremely fresh, buttery, texture contrasts, umami, I could go on. Even the bread is a fun and new experience, served with butter and a series of gourmet salts. Dessert was a great compliment to the meal and offered other new tastes/ textures: dehydrated chocolate mousse wafers anyone? Not a single flaw, I think i will be dreaming of eating here for some time :-) More...

Going to this restaurant makes you feel like you're in on a great big secret. It's in a tiny room in the back of Wafu's. The room is probably 15x20. No windows. It's intimate, but overall the most impressive part is how secret it feels. Make sure to request a seat at the bar if you're a party of two. You'll get to watch the chefs work on their masterpieces. We opted for the 4 course meal with wine pairings. The food was splendid. I discovered that I hate sea urchin, but that's not the restaurant's fault. The servers were nice. The chefs were delightful to watch, and they were very nice when we asked them 21 questions at the end of the evening. The ono, the dungeness, and the scallops were particularly amazing. Service was not perfect. It was slow, and the wine pairings were microscopic. It was a $30 add-on to have wine pairings with 4 courses. All in all, we probably got 1.5 ounces with each pour. Way too small. Barely a full glass of wine for $30 Two sips and your wine is gone. I definitely recommend you bypass the wine pairings and stick to their cocktails (made by Wafu's). More...

Superb seafood. Opted for the 4 course meal, and each dish was a delight. The fish was served in mostly straightforward, solid cuts accompanied with elaborate sauces, neither overshadowing the other. Well. Just got home from our anniversary dinner. Oh my. What taste texture temperature tempting delights. From start to finish. Elegant service without pretentiousness. No "save your fork" request here (like they've run out of forks?) Lovely little rituals with the flatware replaced and napkins folded upon a return to the table. You really have to take note of what they are trying to create here. They want you to be comfortable at the same time have an extraordinary experience. Andrew, our server, explained the dishes, answered questions and made us feel like special guests. I do have to say - the pureed charred eggplant and the exploding cold of the marinated cherry tomatoes, though not the main feature, were exciting examples of what made tonight a dining experience I won't soon forget. Not to mention the inclusion of the meringuey things - one limey early on and one chocolatey in the dessert. Sublime and succulent. Thank you, Roe folks. ps do tell people they changed the name of the restaurant in front unless you are eager to intensify the speakeasy atmosphere~ More...
