I stopped on an impulse on my way to The Met, my gym. I wanted to see what they had in stock, since it had been years since I'd been in the store. It's really amazing. The furniture is mostly mid-century modern, with older antiques mixed in. All of the pieces looked well-designed and in good condition, and the prices seemed reasonable. I was interested in the art, having seen their exhibit at the modern art expo at the Geo. R. Brown a few months ago. The website has a ton of pieces, more than are on display I was told, and that's true, and almost overwhelming, but it's well-presented at the brick and mortar store , and not at all overwhelming. There are some true jewels there, even in the "stacks," at very reasonable prices. If you are looking for any of these things, you do yourself a disservice not to check them out. More...

We were looking for a cabinet that we could place just outside the entrance to our condo unit to store shoes in. We were restricted in options, because we needed something that wouldn't clash with the furniture that is already in our building. We found a couple of pieces that we were interested in here. The store's staff quickly did some extra finishing on the piece we were most interested in, and we're delighted with our purchase. When we asked for a matching chair, I was impressed with how well the staff knew the store's inventory. The owners are willing to negotiate on price for some items compared to what they post on the internet. Don't be afraid to ask. We had a much better experience with this store than the first one we tried. They also loaded the piece into the back of our SUV for us. More...

I've bought a couple of pieces from Matthew including a rosewood credenza and a 70s vintage Eames lounge chair. The quality of the merchandise and store layout are excellent. I get the feeling that some of the reviews complaining about price are from those that don't understand the value of the items that Reeve's carries. I've purchased several things from Matthew over the years and have always found him to be very easy to deal with and friendly and knowledgeable.  My last purchase was a 1950's Dunbar buffet in great condition that was 1/3 of what it was on 1st Dibs.  Reeves has a good selection of Mid Century Modern from buffets to chests to art and lighting.  Most of their upholstery has been recovered (otherwise everyone would bitch that it's so dirty.....).  My only complaint is that there are no visible prices and I haven't been able to crack their code.  It's also an interesting place just just knock around and browse. I have to laugh at these people who bitch about finding things on the internet cheaper, etc.....Of course prices will be higher in a store. You pay for the privilege of seeing something in person, inspecting it and getting immediate gratification. You are also paying for the shop owners time to select, ship, clean , etc.....in order to get to the salesfloor.  If you can't understand this, shop at IKEA or buy a bunch of other generic Chinese junk on Overstock.com. One amazing store. The high price tags are the only reason I did not give 5 stars. If you are looking for a vintage piece of furniture and are willing to pay the higher price tag for a quality item, this should be your first stop. What makes Reeves different than most other "antique" stores I have found, is that they are not just filled with junk that can be considered an antique. Each piece is in great condition, this probably includes already having been reupholstered or repainted, so they are take-home and ready-to-use. I guess if you are looking for your own project piece, then this would not be your first stop. Otherwise, prepare yourself to make a difficult decision of which great piece to call yours! More...

I also agree that the merchandise is on the high end, but they do have incredible taste and always have an impressive inventory. This is the sort of place I will occasionally visit just to admire what's in stock, even if I have no intention of making a purchase. They specialize in mid-century modern and they're very knowledgeable about each and every piece. I think they find most of their pieces at auctions and estate sales. I've purchased two pieces of art from them as well as my sofa. The sofa had been reupholstered beautifully and the cushions filled with a thin layer of down which makes it ideal for an afternoon nap on a rainy weekend. The owner also gave me the remaining fabric from the bolt in case I need to have a pillow or cushion redone somewhere down the line.I gave it four stars because I felt a little slighted when I asked what company they used to reupholster their pieces. I wish I knew because whoever it is does a fabulous job. Well, they wouldn't tell me. I found that a little insulting. I mean, I'm sure there are many customers who have spent far more money at Reeves than myself, but I still consider myself a loyal customer -- it seems like it'd be a common courtesy to share that with a customer; especially one who bought an upholstered piece from them. I inherited two chairs from my grandparents that I'd like to have reupholstered - I don't think that 2 chairs would distract them from working on his items for too long. Plus, I can only afford to have one done at a time on my budget. That has been my only pet peeve with them. Although most other antique stores have considerably lower prices, Reeves' high prices almost justify themselves when you take into account the immaculate condition most of pieces are in.Their store is definitely worthy of a visit! And it's worth mentioning that they have a smaller store near the Westheimer & Dunlavy intersection with similar items. More...

We had been looking for reasonably priced mid-century modern antiques since we got to Houston, and somehow had missed Reeves Antiques.  This is just a great find; a family run store with a wide range of furniture in good shape. All of the prices are negotiable.  Just an an example, we got a wonderful dining table and six chairs for about $1,000 below what we had been quoted for commodity stuff. Mid-century modern fans, rejoice! You've found your Mecca! The father-son duo and cutie-patootie dogs-in-tow have a great spread of art, furniture, and rugs in a humble warehouse-looking store in the Montrose area. They are always friendly and welcoming and will try to help you find what you're looking for. We have been in many times and finally settled on a 1950s MCM re-upholstered couch. Everybody comments on the couch and it is definitely a statement piece in our home. The prices are a bit steep if you're a regular person like us (hence, the 4-star rating), but if you appreciate art and a hand-made furniture that's built to last (and already has lasted more than half a century), you'll do well to make a purchase here. The prices are not posted on the furniture, so you have to ask, but they are opening to bartering a bit. And you may want to inquire as to the return policy - I don't think there is one - so make sure you're happy with the purchase. But, I promise, you will be! More...
