A foodies delight this is! Situated in the Bayview/Hunters point area of SF on 3rd St., this clean and unpretentious little gem of a restaurant, serves lunch and dinner from an elegant and uncomplicated menu. The decor is casual yet invites you to stay awhile and relax and the food is fantastic! The menu is limited but changes regularly and I still had a hard time choosing because everything looked so good. We ended up ordering a spinach, beet and feta salad that we shared, which was perfect because it was a generous portion. My wife ordered the Chicken Jambalaya with Kale and Berbere and I chose the Saffron Prawns with Green Beans, Almonds and Couscous. The flavors and pairings were sublime! An excellent IPA and we were content and yet the meal continues to linger in our memory. We can't wait to go back and I hope the Leg of Lamb with Fennel, Couscous, Pilaf, and Chermoula is still on the menu. The Chef is clearly a gourmet! Prices are very reasonable. Stumbled in here with a hungry friend looking for food. It is a lovely African restaurant with a menu that has options for everyone (vegan, vegetarian, meat lover) and I encourage everyone to go try it if you're in the area! Our server was very kind and friendly and since he knew we were staaarving, he brought us some samples of their soup to hold us off while our meals were being prepared (a true hero!).  I had the Chicken Jambalaya and NO it's not the jambalaya you ate with your cousins in Houston but it also won't give you indigestion and high blood pressure. It's a very refreshing, healthy, and light (but filling) version of the dish with African/Ethiopian twists and (gasp) kale! Just had lunch & latte here. The food and drink are so good.  The lamb spinach & couscous was flavorful, well seasoned and filled with tender chunks of lamb.   I was t even hungry but still ate the entire dish (generous portion) because it tasted so good. The food is delicious. Came in for lunch as my office is around the corner. I split a shrimp and a meatball dish with a friend. Both dishes came with a flavorful, spiced couscous and stewed kale. So. SO GOOD. I need to come in person.My office holds events, and we've ordered from Radio Africa Kitchen more than a few times. They come by, set everything up, and everything is so delicious. Their menu changes pretty frequently, so it's hard to say if there's anything specific because by the time you read this review, it'll probably change.Their lentil dish I had at the time was vegetarian and so delicious. Really nicely seasoned, and though I'm a carnivore, I went back to fill up on this. We had a chicken dish, jambalaya style, which was also really good. They sometimes have black eyed peas, and if they have it on the menu, just order it. Trust me. They do it so well!The only thing I've had that I enjoyed less was the baklava, but I think that's because it was way too sweet for me. For baklava, it's pretty good. More...

We came for Community Dinner on a Tuesday evening. Choice of carrot ginger soup or beet salad with tomatoes and feta for appetizer; several entrees to choose from: lamb, salmon, beef meatball, chicken jambalaya, etc. It was $10 for the appetizer and entree. Quite a solid venue for African-inspired fare located along the further reaches of the T-Third line. It's a clean, sleek, modern, and bright place that occupies an entire street corner and has lots of seating inside.Service is somewhat casual as you order at a counter, but the folks here are super friendly and they'll bring your order to your table. The menu is fairly compact and rotates frequently, but when I stopped by, I found a meaty couscous dish (couldn't remember if it was lamb or beef) amazingly delicious, surprisingly large, and a fantastic deal, especially by West Bay standards, at $15, if I remember correctly.They also have a compact selection of drinks, but one of these was a totally delicious Evening Vespers Belgian-style dubbel from Laughing Monk Brewing just a few blocks away. I was SO excited to try the food here! Authentic African cuisine, beautiful restaurant that smelt amazing when we walked in! We were greeted with the biggest smile and HELLO by Rashida who was so nice and took the time to explain the menu to us! We've only been living in SF for two months, but this is our favorite place. The food is flavorful and very reasonable priced (under $15 for a plate with a protein, a carb, and a green; though their menu changes a little bit). It has sort of a North African to Middle Eastern flavor, which in my experience has been fairly similar across their dishes. I'm not big on giving points for "vibe," but it's a charming place inside with large communal tables and the local news paper. It's not a gentrified neighborhood, but everyone I've interacted with had been respectful and helpful. Radio Africa Kitchen is one of our go to restaurants. We've been happily eating here for the last five years. I can honestly say that even if they weren't in our neighborhood, we would still drive to visit them. Eskender creates truly delicious, unique dishes that you can't get anywhere else in the city. Let's start with the ambiance from the moment you walk in, it was as if I was in a modern safari excursion. The moment I walked in I was greeted with a smile, the owner himself (which I consider a honor seeing that most owners aren't in the restaurant or actually visible) took our order and delivered everything to our table. He explained what everything was in full detail and made sure we were well taken care of. Now let's get into this food!!!!!! The flavors in EVERY. SINGLE. DISH. were amazing. You could taste the distinction within every dish but also taste how they complimented each other I highly recommend it. North African Butternut Squash & French Lentils - butternut squash and lentils were cooked perfect - needed a bit more salt but overall tasty with light flavorsChermoula Couscous - great airy texture and consistency - the spinach and currants mixed in the grains added a nice dimension. Roasted Carrots - I'm not a huge fan of carrots but these were pretty good - lightly oiled and roasted - it went well with the couscous and squash. Hands down my favorite restaurant of the Bayview. I come here at least once a week for dinner or lunch. Eskender the owner does not joke with quality. Everything is fresh, tasty and for a fair price. The menu used to be longer but static. Now it is shorter with changing specials. Great if you are a regular and want variation in the menu. Came here for lunch the other day.  I've been wanting to swing by since seeing it on diners, drive ins and dives, but I"m not in the city too often.   We came right when it opened in the middle of the week, so it was pretty empty; 2 other parties there.   Simple menu, but difficult to decide because everything looked so good!  Ended up having the arugula & beet salad with goat cheese, the lentils and a hibiscus lemonaid.  My friend had the salmon.  It was all so delicious!  Big portions, too!   The other thing that I thought was cool is that the head chef, didn't get his name, noticed that I was VERY pregnant and came out to make sure that the goat cheese was ok for me to have on my salad.  I thought that was cool.  I'll prob be back to this cool spot. Sometime since I was last here, the restaurant has changed its format. We used to sit down and a waiter would come to is with a menu. Now we go up to a counter to order off a menu of about 4-6 items or so. This is a much smaller menu than before, but the quality is excellent. I've come here a couple times with friends, and have effectively tried most of the menu items. The menu items vary slightly, maybe by week. So I saw Radio Africa & Kitchen on Triple D and decided that the next time I went to the West Coast I had to try it. We walked in at about 2pm in the afternoon and the place was empty, besides Eskender the owner, and the cook. I was a little skeptical to say the least. Eskender and Radio Africa Kitchen recently catered our wedding and we couldn't be happier! To begin, we are vegan and wanted a vegan menu for our wedding. We contacted Eskender and he offered to have us to his restaurant for a private tasting during off hours. He prepared a multi-course meal for us, from appetizers to dessert, all vegan. He was excited by the challenge, which made us happy. The reviews from our guests were all positive, some not even aware the whole meal had no animal products in it. His catering staff was equally spectacular during the wedding going above and beyond what one would expect. We highly recommend Radio Africa Kitchen for catering(as well as regular eats). The icing on the cake was that-without getting into specifics-it was incredibly well priced. One guest mistakenly estimated we paid 3 times as much per person as we actually did! Thanks Eskender! I've been here maybe 10 times and always had a great experience. While the selections are limited (usually 3-4 entrees, 2-3 appetizers and 2 desserts to choose from) there is always something that I want. The Jambalaya and the Salmon are both excellent. Even my 14 year old son, who can be pretty picky, loves this food. Although the owner is Ethiopian, it's not typical Ethiopian food. The spices are hard to identify, but wonderful and not overwhelming. The food is fresh. Nice selection of beers and wines. Try it out on a Tuesday for the community dinner - two courses for $10. Thought it was great. Went on "Community Tuesday's", limited (maybe 3 different entrees)  menu on a chalk board - 2 courses for $10., might be the cheapest sit down dinner I've had for a very long time. Had very flavorful meat balls / couscous / veggies w/ a cup of potato soup. My sweetie had the chicken jambalaya w/ (I forgot!) which was very tasty. Order at the counter, get a number on a stick, find a place to sit, enjoy. Itsa challenging ' hood, so beware. Surrounding business' attract a clientele that only is also seen on 6th Street. This Place is Underrawttttted. Seriously, And I think it's because of the questionable location of the establishment. The place is quite delightful and draws your attention with the organic feel as soon as you step in. You are Surrounded and you have to surrender to the smells, decorations, and various books that make this place a great place to enjoy an amazing dinner or lunch. The Menu I am told changes on a constant basis. But I will tell you what I had...by adding this, I really need to start taking pictures about the things I eat. The place is a newer twist to Moroccan, and Ethiopian food. I will add this this place is Gluten free and can be at times Vegan friendly, and it's definitely dog friendly and people friendly.You get the idea of organic vegetables, greens, grains,and wonderfully prepare foods that are unique and original yet, true to it's heritage. But this is what I had:- The potato soup with leaks, flavorful potatoes, leeks, broth, and heavy cream light saucy   with pepper and various spices. Enough to lick your spoon a bunch of times.-Lamb and Couscous, The couscous had a unique flavor almost minted but with delicious saffron and the Lamb was mouth watering, it had this wonderful ability to simmer still in your mouth, yet it was spicy enough to keep you entertained with every bite.- Hibiscus lemonade was by far one of my favorite things to drink period.I can't say your experience will be the same as mine, but with sheer confidence I can say you are going to be eating some amazing delicious and memorable food! If you're giving this place anything but 4 or 5 stars, then you don't know fine African cuisine.  This place, simply put, is f-ing delicious.  Every single dish I have ever tried from the lamb to the jambalaya is bursting with a medley of spices that dance on your tongue with every bite.  The ambiance is fitting for a small, intimate restaurant and the owner, Chef Eskander is delightful and sweet.  I love coming here.  It is so under rated. Came here for a delicious lunch with my neighbor--it's her favorite restaurant and I can see why. The space is open and inviting with huge windows letting in great natural light. The white wine sangria flavored with herbs and flowers is fabulous. Best of all is the owner, Eskander, who sat and chatted with us at the slow end of lunch service (and didn't make us feel rushed though we stayed late). He shared his vision for creating an open space to intersect his passions of Food, Art, and Science. He wants his restaurant to be a place where people come to share and learn. There is a beautiful chess set and we offered to donate a Scrabble game. He said, "Yes, because it is educational." Let's educate people to appreciate good, healthy food, he told us. Oh my lord. SO delicious. I wish I could eat here every day. Three of us went here for lunch, and shared all our dishes. They were phenomenal. Delicious lamb, eggplant terrine, and white bean tagine (so light and lemony - amazing). Also a lovely space, and the owner came over to chat and was so friendly. Sounds like he's trying to make this a space that engages and supports the local community (library of cookbooks, community nights on Tuesdays, etc.). Located in Bayview, off of 3rd street. It's a rapidly developing area that's still in the making. Radio Africa & Kitchen is probably the best ethic counter service I've ever experienced. The guy who took my order was friendly, the food was delicious (I've never had Ethiopian food before), and the ambience was hip but very comfortable. Orange walls, cool music, pretty sure I heard Seu Jorge's new album on the speakers. Long dining tables for multiple parties to share take up the center of the room, while tables of two to four line the walls. Self service silverware, napkins, and pitchers of water are to the right of the register. I was really happy with my dish. Ordered mango cheesecake for dessert! Mmm. The menu and hours have changed significantly and are more limited  to keep the doors open, and Tuesday nights are set special for locals of the neighborhood. It's all amazing and highly recommended. I came to Radio Africa tonight for the first time, after TWO years of saying I was going to try it. All I can say is that after tonight's experience, I'm kicking myself for not eating here sooner. Chef Eskender has outdone himself with first-rate food in a homey and very clean space.Apparently, coming here on a "Community Tuesday" gets you a $10 prix-fixe meal. I ordered the arugula & beet salad, and salmon with quinoa. The salmon was cooked to perfection! Our male server was very nice and greeted us with a HUGE smile. Who could ask for anything more?I wish more of the Black neighbors would support this business, because Radio Africa is quietly uplifting and elevating a stretch of Third Street that has long been plagued with shuttered businesses, crime, violence, and hoodrats hanging on corners and going nowhere in life. I hope Radio Africa has a long and prosperous run in this location, and I will be coming at least once a month from here on out. More...

My boyfriend and I went for dinner. This restaurant has Moroccan/Ethiopian/New American food with fresh vegetables. You order at the counter off the daily whiteboard and they'll bring the food to the table after it's thoughtfully prepared. The chef and hostess are friendly.I had an eggplant tartine with lentils and my boyfriend had the chicken jambalaya. To drink, I had hibiscus lemonade and my boyfriend had the saison on tap. Both were refreshing, and the sangria also looked tempting. The prices were very reasonable for delicious food. Our entrees were healthy and had so much flavor! The decor is cozy and romantic, and the greenery inside adds to the pleasant ambiance. Even the bathroom was pretty, with vanilla tea light candles. They're open daily from noon to 8pm so also a good lunch option. It's a little ways outside of the city but directly next to the 3rd street/oakdale/palou Muni stop. We can't wait to go back! More...

Came here for lunch during my volunteering at Family Mosaic Project down the street. A little history: this owner had a food truck and got grant from the city to open this restaurant! He cooks and runs the place himself with only two helpers - amazing!We came in and ordered at the counter. Utensils, plates, to-go boxes, cups and water are placed on a table along the wall for self-serving. Our orders get delivered to our seats by the chef/owner who was super warm and welcoming! He made all our food quick and even had the chance to speak to us all and truly cared about the volunteer work we were doing that day. I had the chicken jambalaya with kale and hot tea. The tea was in a large mug with a cute tea steeper. My plate was super generous for $12 AND with more chicken than rice! The flavor was soooo refreshing and tasty!!! "Whoahhhh this is some flavor I've never had before" as I told my mother during our good bye dinner. She and her husband are NOT adventurous esters by any means and somehow I dragged them out to an African restaurant in a part of our neighborhood they've never been before. They live in Shanghai for the majority of their time and rarely eat anything besides Italian or Chinese or American food. I love love love new places and had been dying to try this place out. It's not what I expected with their cafe style of ordering. You order at the counter and grab your own utensils and sauces. They have a house made hot sauce you have to try!  Considering the prices, it's reasonable but very much priced as a sit down restaurant. There was only one other table the night we went although it feel like place should be more popular. Service is very nice and friendly. The cashier had just started and didn't know we could order wine by the bottle but the owner told her we could. They even have African wine! The shrimp dish was by far our favorite and you have to watch out for the tuna one because it really does taste like something you've never had! I ate all of it regardless. Will definitely come back. This place is absolutely amazing, some of the best food I have had in the city! I have tried the short rib, salmon, smoked trout cakes and jambalaya, all were really really good, both, in terms of aesthetics and most importantly flavor. The key is that you are getting quite sophisticated dishes for a price of an Ikes sandwich(10-12$ per dish). To give you an example, just had the salmon and it was baked salmon, couscus, rice, fresh salad and 3-4 home made sauces with home made spices. I would have no idea how to prepare any one of these things with such quality, but at Radio Africa they are all perfect individually and mesh together really well. The portion size is also great, you get full but not stuffed.The chef is a really cool and friendly guy to talk to. You can see that there is no ulterior motive or pretension, he is in it because he likes experimenting with and cooking great food, which is quite refreshing in this city. Fabulous eatery !!  Great food, relaxed and inviting surroundings, and truly wonderful (and attentive) staff !!  The food is perfectly spiced and the flavors are amazing.  This is a restaurant that's *almost* too good to share -- but well worth the trip.  As a bonus, every Tuesday night is styled as "Community Tuesday", with a $10 prix fixe two-course menu that is just as good (and as plentiful) as their full-priced offerings.  I will definitely be back for more!  (P.S. -- not only is their food top-notch, but if their hibiscus lemonade is still on the menu when you go, its highly recommended!!) Ok....so.... decor is a bit different from what I was previously  posted but still bright, colorful and nice to look at.Menu is smaller than previous ones in the pictures. Strange thing...not your typical sit down...As soon as you order the food they make you pay for it right then and there... so I guess I'm not ordering dessert... which by the way I guess isn't even an option for tonight. The male server was nice. Big friendly smile!So I ordered the butternut squash soup and the lamb. The total came to just under 20 dollars. The important part....presentation and taste. Large white plates and colorful bowls. The soup has a nice kick to it. Lots of exotic seasonings but could use just a pinch of salt. The flavor of the butternut squash went great with the evoo. We had an incredible meal at Radio Africa during a recent visit to San Francisco. The flavors were well developed and each item we had was nicely prepared and presented.Our favorites were the heirloom tomato salad (the tomatoes were very fresh), the smoked trout, and the white corn soup. The soup stood out with its undertone of lime and a rich broth that is hard to describe.The entrees were equally as good. I  enter the resteraunt and the ambience and decor of this place is totally on point. Best decor in the area according to me. The kindest server with a kickass hairdo comes and greets me. You can kinda see the kitchen due to the way that the resteraunt is designed and there you will get to see the chef (who's also the one responsible for its inception btw) hard at work. First thing you notice that the menu doesn't have too many items on it (which is not a bad thing at all, it's about quality, not quantity). I got a take-out and decided upon the Chicken Jambalaya and boy was it good. Would definetly go here again. Full marks to the chef. I'll definetly recommend this place to everyone. A few family members & I celebrated two birthdays at this wonderful little restaurant last week. It being a Wednesday, we had the place pretty much to ourselves. Both the server & the chef were very friendly & accommodating. we brought a bottle of reserve wine with us, which they were able to open & even decant for us. All the appetizers (we ordered the hierloom tomato salad, the prawns & the corn soup) were sizable portions and very tasty indeed. The chicken jambalaya & the veggie tagine were also excellent.You won't find your run of the mill dishes here, especially since they change the menu often based on availability of local/fresh/seasonal ingredients. We went here for a small & intimate family dinner to celebrate two birthdays & were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of food. the atmosphere is very friendly & informal. Being a Wednesday , we had the place pretty much to ourselves. Our server was efficient & friendly. The food came out in sizeable portions & all of it was DELICIOUS! Radio Africa Kitchen is that rare experience in SF - a restaurant run by an experienced and inventive chef who serves really tasty dishes in generous portions that are reasonably priced. The menu is all fresh and local and changes seasonally. The chef is a master with spices. We had the spring menu which included a smoked trout dish that was to die for. All of the appetizers (Mezze) are incredible, as are the main courses we chose - lamb and spiced meatballs. And the pear and chocolate dessert was perfect. Good wine list and great service, too. Eating here feels like eating a delicious (yet healthy) meal at a friend's house (if your friend were a professional cook).The meals are spiced and seasoned with great balance and simplicity; none of the flavors will knock you over, but you will taste each ingredient. When I went, we got a nice arugula salad (which had just enough dressing to add flavor but not mask the peppery spiciness of the arugula), a trout terrine (where the flavor of the smoked trout was abundant, without tasting fishy), and the lamb (perfectly cooked and seasoned with some herbs). I really cannot say enough nice things about this restaurant. To begin, the food was absolutely delicious. Stunningly tasty. Spiced remarkably. It was both comforting as well as surprising in flavor profile. We ordered the cauliflower soup, the duck with okra, and the flank steak. All of these items were incredible and unique. I loved the short menu, and am certain that every item was carefully imagined. The prices were fantastic for the quality (top-notch) and quantity (fair portions - neither huge nor small). Our entrees were $15, and with one appetizer (between 2 people) we left very satisfied. The restaurant is decorated very beautifully and makes for a very pleasant date atmosphere. This is not in a trendy neighborhood, which was actually great because we found parking easily. Our waiter was very kind, attentive, and helpful. I will certainly be bringing friends back and will be sure to try the taster menu. So far, this is, hands down, my favorite restaurant in SF. I ate here last Wednesday night and it was truly one of the best meals I have ever eaten in my life, and as a hardcore grow-it-yourself foodie, I am used to nibbling on super fresh organic handmade delicious edibles. This is exactly the kind of experience you want at a restaurant. The atmosphere is relaxing but lively. The food is fresh and unique- you won't find any of these recipes anywhere else, but they are unpretentious and rooted in deep cultural traditions. If you don't, you're missing some of the most delectable array of tastes ever to hit your palate. Go all out for the Tasting Menu. This is the best way to experience Chef Eskinder Aseged's luscious food. Here you'll find a blend of spices and seasonings and styles from all over with an emphasis on the freshest seasonal ingredients from wild fish, shellfish and incredibly seasoned meats to the tastiest grains and vegetable combinations. You may have tasted the food of Radio Africa at various popups and events including La Cocina's Street Food Festival. Now it really has a chance to shine in it's own home! We were ever so fortunate to be served directly by Chef Eskinder who carefully explained every dish and answered our multitude of questions. So what did we love? Well we, shared everything and each of wasn't always willing to part with half, but we did try to be fair. So many of the dishes have such complex flavors that burst on your tongue and palate as they open up. Do not, I repeat, do not miss the Spiced chicken soup with pomegranate, cilantro & Japanese chilies, nor the grilled leg of lamb with kufta, couscous and chermoula, the seared salmon with beluga lentils, spinach & pistachio salsa & the roasted eggplant with goat cheese, garbanzo beans, spinach & sumac. Everything about this restaurant is perfect. Our only difficulty was choosing among the many options, since everything on the menu looked enticing. In the end we went with three appetizers and an entree for two people, which was plenty of food without being too outrageously much, and then we had the welcome shock of receiving a bill far lower than we had anticipated. The service was also kind, unrushed, and attentive but unobtrusive. Really a lovely spot for two or more people to enjoy delicious food in a well-appointed, comfortable and unpretentious setting. It also made an excellent Valentine's date.The impressive aspect of the food is that the technique meshes well with the complexity and novelty of the ingredients, which is to say that more complicated concoctions like the cauliflower and celery root soup get the rigorous treatment they require, while on more reliable crowd-pleasers like the leg of lamb over couscous, they source excellent ingredients and then get out of the way, letting the ingredients do the work. The result is that every dish is a home run. And while I'm not sure which items I'll reorder and which I'll forgo so I can explore more of the menu--attractive options abound--I intend to be back again and again. More...

Had my birthday dinner with 10 guests (including myself).  It was great, they were flexible with seating.  Food was delicious! Service was ok (the waiter kept taking out plates before we were done felt rushed).  With drinks, shared desert and family style apps and main dishes (and the b-day girl not chipping in!) each person ended up only spending 30 bucks (including tip).  Great place. The restaurant was very quiet — only 4-5 other groups in the restaurant — but service was prompt and attentive, and the food was incredible: Generous portions, cooked perfectly, and amazingly affordable. This was my first time trying African food. I had the 5-course seasonal tasting menu, and very much enjoyed it. My favorite was the crostini with smoked trout dip. The chef is very kind and came to visit the diners at the end. Our waiter was very friendly and brought out all our courses in a timely manner. AMAZING! My boyfriend and I came on a Thursday night because mom had sent me a groupon for a five course meal for two. My boyfriend was a little iffy on coming because of the neighborhood but whatever he got over it lol. The restaurant itself is pretty modern looking and there was only one waiter and one cook. We told him our groupon was expired but he reassured us that it will still be honored which was nice.  As soon as we sat down the food kept coming out! It was nice but strange to us that after every course we were given new plates and utensils. We both had a hibiscus lemonade that was delicious, more hibiscus than lemonade. Our first course was two soups, celery root cauliflower, and a chicken with pomegranate. Both were really good, esp the pomegranate one, who would've guessed that pomegranate in chicken soup would be the perfect combination. Next we had prawns with green beans and smoked trout bacala with red cabbage, apples, and bread. Both were good, the bacala was kind of like a warm tuna salad. Our third course was mushroom crostinis and beets with fennel, mandarin oranges, and arugula. The mushroom crostinis were soooooo good! I'm not big on beets so I just ate the arugula, but the citrus was a nice touch to the salad. Our main course came with grilled leg of lamb with cous cous, salmon with quinoa, and butternut squash with Swiss chard. The lamb was seriously the best I've ever had in my entire life! I personally dislike lamb and would never order it but this lamb was so tasty and just melted in my mouth! I thought it was a filet mignon it was so tender and did not have they gamey taste AT ALL! For dessert we had honey roasted pears with mixed berries, chocolate, and citron cream. Amazing amazing amazing everything we had was amazing! We thought we'd still be hungry after but we indeed left full and satisfied. Excellent service and excellent food. Everything was made with super fresh ingredients and we felt like we ate a lot but didn't feel bad because of how healthy it was. If money wasn't an issue we would eat here everyday. No joke. One of my best surprise in 5 years of organizing dinner for my group of french women. I took my daughter to this hidden gem - we ordered the tasting menu (not listed, but they had offered one on a previous visit). Every bite of every dish was delicious, unique and beautifully plated. This restaurant is a treasure! The service was warm and friendly without being intrusive (I can't stand wait staff who seem determined to become your new best friend). Each course came right as we were ready (it's a small place, seats maybe 50, but it's quite spacious, and they keep an eagle eye out for the needs of each customer). I have lived and dined in both Europe and Asia, and in New York City. This was an amazing experience, with absolutely delicious food, wonderful service, gorgeous space, and we cannot come up with a reason as to why it wasn't packed.  The appetizers are just delightful, and the only problem is that we didn't have more people with us...and the lamb. If you think this place is a find, and you will, imagine finding it on 3rd Street at Oakdale -- formerly one of the iffier corners of Southeast, but now a pleasant rendezvous spot thanks to this restaurant. The decor is modern and spare to the point of being Scandinavian. The other surprise is the menu. The chef is Ethiopian (or is it Eritrean?) and I thought the food would be Ethiopian in flavors. Went here with a friend to try their tasting menu.  First time at this restaurant and it was a thoroughly wonderful experience.  The female wait staff was very pleasant and the owner/cook(?) was hard at work in the kitchen.  The restaurant is beautiful, kitchen area is open and nicely designed, great place to sit and spend time with friends over a meal, not loud so you can actually have nice conversations - good overall ambience.  The food is fantastic.  Had the best corn/garlic soup I've ever tasted and all the appetizers were nicely done with good flavors, appeared carefully prepared.  Portion sizes were generous and the food quality looked very good.  The last dish was dessert and was so good - soft chocolate cake with some fresh fruit, dates, and some poached(?) apricots that were absolutely delicious.   I came here on a groupon but would gladly patronize this place and try their other dishes another time.  This is one of the few places that I've tried on groupon that I can say would be worth return trips without the deal. All I can say is WOW, what a good find in the Bayview!!! We came here with a Travelzoo deal and boy was it worth it.  The deal was for a 5-course meal and with that came so many amazing flavors, fresh herbs and veggies, and well-cooked meets.  I can't even recall anything bad that we ate.  Every dish came with freshness and just enough flavor.  I don't think you can go wrong with either choosing your own dishes or going with the chef's picks.The service was also impressive.  I would come back here with or without an on-line deal and I often recommend this place to my friends either visiting the Bay Area or who are locals.  Looking forward to going back for more goodness! We recently had a lovely experience here. We stopped in early in the evening, having wandered by during a foray to the Bayview to check out the 3rd on Third programming. Because we had our two children in tow, and the place looked pretty classy (i.e. not a kid place), I had my doubts about whether it was the right spot for us, but it smelled delightful, we were hungry, and the host was friendly, so we asked for a table. My doubts were well-founded: our kids freaked out. There was spilled hibiscus juice on the white tablecloth and at least one temper tantrum. But despite the trouble, it was well worth the trip. The food was incredibly good. Fresh and unexpected flavors, and excellent, friendly, accommodating (considering) service. I enjoyed the red-lentil samosa appetizer, while the kids were all about the edamame hummus. We ordered two appetizers, two main meals, and several drinks (to help mama and daddy get through the evening...). Small but very serviceable wine list that paired so well with the fresh aesthetic of the food. My husband commented that the green beans, lightly braised with a hint of lemon juice and coconut ( ) oil were the best he'd ever had. And he's not usually a big fan of anything green, so that's saying quite a bit. One of the dishes we ordered included prawns and they were cooked like the beans...simply and perfectly. We'll definitely go back without children. The interior also deserves some mention. It's lovely. There's a beautiful open kitchen, walls of windows, one or two striking photographs, and the centerpiece of each table is a low wooden vessel full of colorful, seasonal fruits and vegetables. My sons were thrilled to be able to eat from the centerpiece, and even more thrilled when they tried the delicate miniature Saturn peaches, which were so sweet and fine. More...

What a shame people don't know to drive down 3rd Street into Bayview to eat at Radio Africa & Kitchen. This is one of the city's gems, and the neighborhood isn't eve that scary any more.The chef, Eskander, escaped assassination in Ethiopia, made it to the US, and trained with Joyce Goldstein at Square One and David Humm at Campton Place. Then he takes his big time chops and adds Ethopian spices and sensibilities. It doesn't really get much better for one of the best meals in the city at a very affordable price.We got the meze sampler, which was wonderful, and then divided four entrees up between the four of us. What a deal! while every new place near our home in the Mission District is more expensive than the last, Radio Africa is a steal. Four of us had a bottle of wine, appetizers, great entrees and shared two desserts for $101! The wine was a particularly good value.The setting is very nice, the live musician adds a great touch and the server (are those eyelashes real?!) was friendly, offered great advice, and seemed to sense every time we had a question or needed something, without hovering. I had the chicken & prawn jambalaya, which was my favorite of the 3 entrees I sampled, though everyone in the group raved about their own meal. This place is only open for dinner so this was our first time. We brought our kids with us as they are on spring break and we had made plans late. The live jazz was nice and it was special for our kids to experience. The wait staff were very friendly and treated our party of five (3 kids) well, not something you get in many bougie places in the City.We really loved the food. They made the jambalaya non-spicy and everyone loved the flank steak even though it was rare, not how they usually like it. It was seasoned wonderfully and was very memorable. Everything was very tasty and beautiful presented and they kept our waters topped off so I would say that they were very attentive. The place was not too busy, I'd say about 75% capacity. The one area for improvement, and I say this constructively because I want them to be successful and will be back soon, is that a more experienced hostess would have greeted and seated us sooner making this a perfect dinner out. However, as I said we will definitely be back and look forward to tasting their seasonal menu as it develops overtime. It was not too expensive as others have suggested, I feel that it was well worth the money and trip back to the Bayview after work. More...

This was definitely a treat!  Very refreshing food and so full of flavor!  My friend and  I had the tasting menu for 2 voucher from TravelZoo and they give you such a variety and so much food its awesome!  I love the Ethiopian spice gives some of the dishes a little kick that fades quick and doesn't linger. My husband and I enjoyed the tasting menu, which is comprised of each of the appetizers, and a sampling of all of the entrees, along with desert. We live in the neighborhood and are delighted that Radio Africa & Kitchen is nearby. Our wait staff was friendly and relaxed and each sampling platter was brought to our table in a timely manner. That evening, a Thursday night, Radio Africa hosted a live, jazz duo which added to the modern, yet casual ambiance. All of the food was prepared well, was very tasty and was delicately prepared. I was really blown away by how good our experience was at Radio Africa. We bought the 5 course tasting menu groupon which turned out to be about 10 courses. Our initial greet time lagged greatly, but once the staff made it over, everything was fine from there on out. The roasted chestnut and edamame hummus was awesome, the soup was interesting, a little bitter but oddly craveable; the shrimp was average; the smoked trout crab dish was delectable; The lamb with harissa couscous was the table favorite but the lentils samosas were a close 2nd. Ended with a fruit crisp- light on crisp but heavy on fruit so who can complain. The guitar player didn't take a break once which kept the vibe flowing. First time actually eating here. Food well prepared and seasoned well. Menu varitey suggest vegetarian mostly, but there are some meat dishes. I had the beef dish with spinach and sweet potatoes. Excellent, not spicy and meat was very tender. More than enough to keep you full. Dessert menu was awesome, althought did not order, too full!! Great neighborhood find, parking is limited mostly on the street. But accessible by the "T" streetcar. Stops right in front. Since I am familiar with the area, I would recommend to local San Franciscans and anyone in the neighborhood to support local entrepenurs. Not pricey. Affordable as well. Wine list is varied as well. This place is delicious! My kind of food. My company hosted an event here the other night and I had no expectations. I'd actually never eaten Etheopean or Morroccon food and had no idea what I was missing. I had been meaning to check this place out after having read about its prior incarnation as a pop up restaurant. I arrived for my reservation and found the place was obviously overwhelmed by the deluge of people who had come for Valentine's day. The waitress who seated us apologized in advance after telling us the kitchen was way backed up. Despite this, the food seemed to come out at a welcome pace, allowing us to fully enjoy the tasting menu. The chef even came out to welcome customers and help the staff with turning over tables. TIP: They usually have a livingsocial for a tasting menu for 2.  Where else can you find a Michilin recommended restaurant that does that?!I want to love this place.  I really, really do.  But I don't think it's going to happen.  Let me just say right off the bat: this place is great.  The tasting was definitely worth it - 5 courses comprised of: (1) 2 soups, a mild cauliflower and a slightly spicy butternut squash, (2) sauteed prawns with a crab-smoked trout spread served with bread and beet salad, (3) a standard green salad to share with 4 crimini mushroom crostinis with baked parmesan, (4) an extremely generously portioned entree tasting plate, and finally (5) flourless chocolate cake a la mode with pear.We liked everything except the black lentil samosa, which could just be a cultural thing, but it had a funky aftertaste and didn't really mesh with the other entrees.  The Wild barramundi looked fantastic, but needed a little salt, as it was kind of flavorless beneath the skin.We loved the lamb shoulder with couscous, and the eggplant with pearled couscous was tasty as well. The lamb was perfectly tender, and the eggplant was seasoned extremely well and blended perfectly with the couscous.  Unfortunately, nothing really "popped" for me.  Admittedly, I am no connoisseur of African cuisine, but in general I wasn't SUPER impressed with the service or the food, which came out to ~$110 for two.  That being said, the livingsocial brought it down to ~$60, and I really can't complain about that.  5/5 with a coupon, 4/5 without. Like a catchy song you can't get out of your mind, I keep thinking about our dining experience at Radio Africa. Located in the Bayview area of San Francisco, this newly remodeled restaurant location surprises you with great food, excellant service, and a wonderful dining experience. We arrived at opening time on a Saturday evening. The restaurant was empty and the staff appeared to be still setting up. Service was slow in the beginning but really came around at the end. We had the tasting menu. Every course was prepared elegantly and each dish combined all flavors into a wonderful mix. Loved this place!  The food was amazing, esp for the price.  To start out, we shared the Kabocha soup, which was by far one the best soups that I have ever had.  Super creamy and tasty.  For the next course, the boy had the roasted eggplant dish and I had the Jersuleum articokes with lentils (minus the goat cheese).  Again by far both dishes were amazing.  Very fresh & full of flavor.  By far one of the best values in the city.  Two drinks, 1 app, two main course, with tip and tax all less than $45.  This has now become our go to place when we can't figure out where to eat. My birthday date.  We were full by the end of the 6 item appetizer mezze (sp?) and also split the flank steak entree and dessert du jour.  Our server recommended against a second entree on the account of too much food. We were surprised at first but quickly saw that the portions were generous yet still well balanced.  Unique spices and flavors you haven't had anywhere else.  Come and feast in the Bayview for about $50 per person! How do I begin? If you are having an event, HIRE Eskender and his team. They catered our 160 guest wedding, and delivered perfectly, on-time, and with delicious results! Our guests are still talking about it! Cynthia and Eskender crafted a perfect menu that accommodated our guests' restrictions (vegans, nut allergies, etc), serving beautiful food at the right pace and in perfect portions. Several guests commented that the timing of the food was better than most weddings they'd been to, no waiting around for the next course, and no rushing to finish! The staff was courteous, attentive, and prompt to the needs of the guests. The cake was cut expertly and passed out efficiently... I can't say enough good things. I've been singing the praises of this restaurant for a couple of years now, which is why we wanted them to cater our wedding. Perfect decision. I can't wait for our next event. More...

Radio Africa Kitchen is incredible.I used a Gilt City voucher for a 5 course tasting menu for 2. It was the absolutely perfect amount of food, we just with our bellies happy and full, but not uncomfortable. The appetizers were delightful, you actually get a small serving of all 5-6 of them. My favorite was the smoked trout, but the persimmon and goat cheese salad was incredible as well. Really, they are were.Dinner was a fish, vegetables, and lamb. The lamb was the shining star of the meal. It melted in your mouth and had the most wonderful flavor.Dessert was a perfect sized serving of flourless chocolate cake with strawberries and fresh whipped cream. Heaven!Not only was the food delicious but it was beautifully presented and the service was great as well.I would absolutely go here again, it was one of the best dinner experiences I've had. We just ate at RA&K and I couldn't wait to write a review. My husband and I had the chef's 5 course tasting menu including: the kombucha  squash soup, smoked trout encased in beets, crimini mushrooom toasts with a salad of persimmon, arugula and goat cheese. We shared these dishes and all were absolutely delicious. Usually I am wowed by the starters at a restaurant and then a bit disappointed by the entrees. The chef did not let us down with a shared oblong platter of: Barrimundi with salsa, slices of spicy tender steak, cauliflower puree, caviar lentils and cous-cous and a couple of green veggies.Chef is a genius in the way that he plans and executes the menu....and he does it all himself.....at least on the night we visited he was alone in the kitchen. The atmosphere is comfortable, Jazz music, open kitchen, warmth from the wood tables and banquet bench seating. I felt like I was "dining" without the pretentiousness of a fine dining restaurant.The prices are more than reasonable in fact I'm surprised at the yelp $$$. Where else in SF can you get this kind of great food ( $16 entrees ) and a $6 glass of chenin blanc I can't wait to return to try  more dishes as the menu changes monthly. More...

Outstanding food and friendly service. We really enjoyed our date night at Radio Africa. Loved the smoked trout appetizer and the subtly spiced jamalaya, which were real standouts. We also had a garbanzo soup, heirloom tomato and watermelon salad with arrugula and sumac flowers (beautiful), a mushroom crostini, and entree of barramundi which was perfectly cooked. The entrees were served family style together on a long serving platter interspersed with lentils and vegetables such as greens, beets, grape tomatoes. I'm so glad we tried this restaurant due to Groupon. We were treated to 4 appetizers, two entrees (shared) and two individual desserts. The warm chocolate cake with fresh strawberries and cream were comfort-food delicious. It looks like their menu changes weekly. I'd love to come back again and try a fresh menu. The decor is beautiful, zen-like comes to mind. Spacious with green plants, robin's-egg-blue and green plates, and sleek wood accents combine for a relaxing feel.
