Q&As

This year, like a number of UX experts, PulaTech is betting on AI-powered chatbots, VR, and immersive storytelling trends to leave a permanent mark on the industry. Undoubtedly, we will also see a lot of last year’s trends continue to shape and influence the web design space.

Without further ado, let’s explore what design innovations can give your website a serious facelift in 2017.

Virtual Reality and Video
Although the gadget world was abuzz last year with the exciting virtual reality (VR) announcements, the trend hasn’t made a huge impact on web design trends so far. One great example of how VR and 360º video can be incorporated into web design to create a breathtaking, interactive experience is Peugeot 208’s promo campaign that utilizes both technologies to showcase a new product.

Video is by far having the largest impact of any technology influencing web design. Product markers are recognizing that not only does a picture have a value of over 10,000 words, but additionally a video is worth pages and pages and pages more. As a premier partner of the world's highest-rated corporate video platform, PulaTech is partnering with Qumu Corporation to deliver customized web interfaces to corporate America and small and midsize businesses alike. Showing, educating, training, illustrating and just plain talking about your product or brand is so much more engaging than simply writing about it.

AI-powered bots and conversational interfaces
In terms of visuals, bots are unlikely to have a big impact on web design, but they will significantly influence how designers think about creating websites. AI-powered bots are going to get even more realistic and complex this year, empowering businesses to automate communication and sales. Using tools like Letsclap, online businesses will be able to connect with their customers via messaging apps like WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger or WeChat, providing customized customer support and commerce. Conversational interfaces will be a huge shift, helping big brands express different sides of their personality and making them more human and approachable. Additionally, the availability of plug-ins into the web content management world all the way to the open source technology and levels like WordPress and Joomla! of chat AI plug-ins is really pretty awesome. For a very small dollar you can create awesome experiences on a budget.

High-quality authentic photography
Stock photography reduces trust and is often completely ignored. It’s bad for design and even worse for business. With so many authentic photography sites popping up online, finding beautiful high-quality images is easier than ever, hence, we will continue to see the decline of cheesy stock photography in web design. Companies like Adobe and image blocks, video blocks, etc. are making a huge impact in this area of web design. But additionally, designers that are sharing their own libraries of open-source icon libraries and other very small image formats that can be styled using cascading style sheets and FontAwesome, Google fonts and the like make engaging icon oriented websites that are crisp, quick and efficient.

Responsive Design
The trend towards mobile phone consumption of the web is still increasing at a increasing rate year-over-year. It is extremely important that all great websites adhere to responsive design and ensure that they are highly available on all platforms. A great website that is poor performing on a mobile device because of bandwidth constraints or optimization issues is truly missing out what could be up to 60% of the market consumption of their website. I don't know the exact number, but mobile phone consumption of web sites is now approaching somewhere around 50 to 60% of all web traffic. If your site is not available on all platforms in a well-designed manner, it's truly missing a large share of the market.

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
The rules this year have changed and search interfaces like Google and Bing have put more stringent requirements on what it takes to rank the site well from a search engine perspective. Gone are the days when you can just spam out a whole bunch of backlinks and make your website appear to be more popular than it is, thus promoting its ranking. Today true posts, not spam, well-organized campaigns that leverage social media, additional SEO techniques, and features are much more likely to be successful than traditional spam based brute force techniques. Additionally, search engines are paying much more attention to website optimization, speed, keyword management, blogging, and mobile capabilities than ever before.

When starting the new project PulaTech likes to spend most of its time listening to a customer's goals. Understanding their brand, prompting with minor open-ended questions that allow us to get a great feel for a clients personality, brand, sites they like, short-term goals, what they consider success etc. are more important than asking a bunch of questions. We would rather understand the client first and bring in our expertise to fill gaps and help shore up ideas later.

PulaTech is a term that in many international languages blends to terms that describe some of the goals that we have for our company. The word "Pula" means "bridge" in many languages. Everyone is pretty sure what Tech means. Providing a bridge to technology is part of our mission and what we are trying to accomplish and why it's so enjoyable is that we get to create something from nothing in the eye of the beholder. It's kind of silly, but we consider ourselves artists, with the web as our canvas, and we get satisfaction from listening to what you would like to see built and making that a reality. It's really about using technology tools to create art, where design meets feature function with a couple of shakes of technology thrown on top.

I made a choice one day to move on in my career as a solution architect for a translation technology company. I created interfaces, and technologies that solved business problems, created efficiencies on a very grand scale and transformed a small business into a large business over the nine years that I spent there. Looking back, I have always had the talent to do this for myself and that is what I started out wanting to do. I wanted to build a brand that others had confidence in because of a fair and reasonable price point and a skill set that included listening to customer requirements, needs, wants and turn those into realities. I've always felt that "Listening" should have been a required course in either high school or college if not younger in school. Sometimes the most important skill that anyone can have isn't to be the smartest person in the room, but instead to be the best listener. If you can take someone like that and surround them with tech minds, you can create pretty awesome things that people will love. That's what I want to do.

Because what we truly care about is your confidence in us. We will gain that confidence by understanding your needs, listening and satisfying the requirements and delivering on your timeline. But most of all we will always be transparent. Will be transparent in the way we are executing on your project, keeping in front of you open questions, thoughts, ideas, progress, costs. All way through the process we want you to know what you are going to get, where it is and what is going to cost. Then when you get it, we will do everything in our power to make sure that it is what you wanted! If we can't, we will make concessions and come to an agreement.
