Suzanne J was very knowledgeable about the Opera House and shared many details that included Chicago's history facts.
Nice place to see opera, although I saw a musical - West Side Story.
Beautiful & spacious. Old, but elegant.
I've seen a couple of productions at the Civic Opera building the last one being West Side Story. We had box seats which were at the back of the main floor. I was disappointed with the seats because it made it difficult for the people at the back of the box to see past the shoulders of the people with the seats in the front of the box. The floor in the box seat was not elevated for each row so you really were looking through the people seated in front of you. If you're seated toward the back of the main floor or in a box seat or balcony, bring your opera glasses! The venue is huge and it's difficult to see the expression on the actors faces from that far back. I saw Jesus Christ Superstar last year and sat toward the front of the main floor and it was spectacular! More...
Loved West Side Story
Visited technexus office here for a hackathon. Great building, access to wheelchairs.
Great production of West side story! Sat in the main floor the first time and loved it. Sat in the second balcony and I must say I thought I enjoyed it more because I was able to see the great choreography even better. The seats were comfortable and I'm glad the AC was on! More...
Beautiful building, wonderful play. What more could a girl ask for?
I love this place. Not a fan of the rude ushers but the place is huge and so detailed. My nephew and sons graduation was here and I love how it's set up. You can see everything no matter where you sit!! More...
It's so lovely there. I want to go back
West Side Story... need I say more!
I was accompaning my neighbor who is blind (yes the blind enjoy theater & I hope other theaters will realize this and act accordingly) to a "special" performance of West Side Story. We found everyone we encountered professional and attentive to our needs which made the performance wonderful. More...
For being so far back the seats were great! Couldn’t see clear facial expressions but could see all the action!
Beautiful use of space.. Magnificent building in and out
We saw the West Side Story, it was great!
One of the highlights in Chicago, and the largest theater.
Very nice theater. Good place to see a show. We were in the balcony. But still had a very good view of the stage.
Wow, great show and performance.
It was amzing from their singing to their movements i loved almost everything about the opera house wish I got a seat closer though.
Full house on a Wednesday night.
Great old theater. It was great to see everyone dressed up.

Absolutely stunning venue for any type of entertainment gala Excellent services from staff and enough seating for everyone to enjoy the festivities
Beautifully restored art deco building hosting operas and musicals.
I had a fantastic experience
If you are visiting Chicago this is a must see
Classic Chicago Opera House
A beautiful restored building with excellent sound quality and well worn seats.
Beautiful historic place. If you haven't seen a show here, you must go sometime. We've never been disappointed by an opera or musical. Always a very well-executed, high-quality production that you will not find anywhere else. Highly recommended!! More...
Beautiful facilities, clean and well staffed. They have elevator attendants, ushers, and friendly staff in general to help your experience to be the best it can be!
Nice experience except rude person behind me bumping my seat.

Saw West Side Story! A great American musical!
Love the experience of being there. Beautiful building and very accommodating.
Went to see West Side Story and it was fabulous.

Historical & opera is outstanding
When you walk in, you feel like you are walking into musical history! A beautiful building, and even more beautiful music. Their musicians are some of the highest competent musicians I have heard at any classical venue in Chicago! And there is something for everyone! Drinks, snacks, great music; what more could you want? Huge old building next to river walk
While this is the only opera house I've ever been to, with the exception of Sata Fe's outdoor opera house, I would be surprised if there's a more beautiful venue in the United States.
Excellent performance highly recommend

En este edificio queda el Consulado de Venezuela, el personal de recepción y de la oficina Consular son muy atentos
Great place for great sounds of music
The view from the bridge is amazing !!!
Such a wonderful theatre. Don't be afraid to check for open seats as there tends to be no shows here or there.
One of the great concert venues and Opera houses in the world. No lie. A Beaux Arts architectural masterpiece. They're struggling with modern concert goers but I still go for the opera.
Best place in downtown
The Graham Room is wonderful. It has great food and the drinks are out of this world. Definitely worth the money!
Best experience ever
Always an awesome venue!!
Beautiful building with incredible interior and rich history of housing the most talented opera singers and famous performance around the globe
Elektra was super!
The building is amazing and the quality of the performances outstanding
Its an artistic building and I love the revenge story with NYK. lol!
My family and I visited this place to see the fine visual arts - Shen yun perform here in December! It was an absolute treat for the senses! Highly recommended 5/5
Saw La Traviata Great music and production
Everything here is amazing! One of the world's great opera companies!
I've seen three performances at this venue (Shen Yun, La Bohème, and La Traviata). Each performance included the usage of the orchestra pit, by the orchestra, of course). The view of the actors on stage and the projection of the sounds from the stage and from the instruments in the orchestra was top-notch in all the of the performances. Can't wait for the next performance I see here! More...

Well preserved facility with EXCELLENT sound characteristics.
Awsome place Opera was Great
What an amazing building. So we'll maintained. The Opera is so special to watch.
Great acoustics in the building. Never a bad seat.
It was okay.
A beautiful place for a show
Very classic building with great acoustics
Great venue, I went for the Shen Yun show.
La Boheme had it all! Do yourself a favor and go see it.
Beautiful venue and great show! However seating will have you praying for your knees!!!
Wonderful productions, beautiful music and great singing
I was there for the Anna Netrebko. Staff is polite and helpful. Building is beautiful with Art Deco architecture.
Beautiful building inside and out. The theatre had great views from any seat and was so ornate!
Been a subscriber for 28 years, and still find terrific productions being presented. Most recent opera, Cendrillon, is no exception.
Chairs are small and somewhat uncomfortable
Totally love this place. Sound is good no matter where you sit. Super titles can be ignored or read. Elevators whisk you to upper floors. Audience members are almost always sociable without being intrusive. Scrnery, singing, orchestra are always of highest quality. Who needs the Met? Chicago has Lyric Opera! More...
I had an absolutely wonderful time!
Loved the atmosphere of this place. Very beautiful building with charming features such as elevator operators.
Must see entertainment for sure.
Great place to spend a wonderful evening filled with music. Beautiful music. I enjoy every minute.
Bucket list item. Was awesome to see the inside.
The Civic Opera building was commissioned by British born American tycoon Samuel Insull. Urban legends says that Insull's wife wanted to be an opera singer, but was turned down by the New York Met, so Ingersull built an opera for her. The building is shaped like a chair, therefore Insull's contemporaries dubbed it "Insull's chair". It also faces west, according to urban legend it symbolizes Insull turning his back on the New York Metropolitan Opera for rejecting his wife. The building was designed by the firm of Graham, Anderson & Probst who also designed the Wrigley Building, Field Museum and Merchandise Mart. Insull demanded thst the building be democratic, safe, have excellent sights, comfortable seats, and be self-supporting through businesses renting space in the building. The Civic Opera is 45 floor office building with the opera occupying approximately 1/2 of the space . It is a combination of Art Nouceau and Art Deco building. The outside decoration is by Henry Hering who also designed some of the reliefs on the Michigan Avenue bridge over the Chicago River. The Civic Opera was completed on 15 July, 1929, and opened its doors on 4 November, 1929. In 1993 the Civic Opera was purchased by the Lyric who up to then had only rented the space. The theater underwent a complete $100 million makeover (1993-1996), with new upholstery and carpets being installed and all the gilt restencilled. The design for the theater's interior are by Hean-Louis-Charles Garnier. The walls are pannelled with pink and grey Tennessee marble. The chandeliers are of Austrian crystal. 40 foot columns are topped with carved capitals in gold leaf. Two grand staircases lead to the mezzanine which holds 31 boxes. Above the mezzanine are two more balconies with 800 seats each. All together the Lyric Opera can seat 3563 patrons making it the second largest opera in north America after the New York Metropolitan Opera. The famous fire curtain shows a scene from Aida. It was created by Jules Guerin. More...
The tour is fabulous and so very interesting. It is a grand !!!
One of the true gems in this country.
Verry nice food
What a wonderfully and exciting place to visit, especially if you’re actually seeing an opera. I believe it’s a Louey Sullivan design. You find many like this in modern times. Go to the opera and you’ll love what you see on stage and every where. Hit like if this was helpful. More...
Clue Italian restaurant nearby w Chianti in basket
Interesting place to visit !!
Wonderful opera house that I always enjoy. Take train in from suburbs and a short walk to Civic.
Beautiful building with an enormous stage, allowing truly grand-scale productions of operas and other shows. Legroom isn't excessive, but it's adequate for me (I'm 6' tall) and the seats are fairly well padded. Besides, if you are there for an opera the beautiful music will soon make you forget about your seating. Behind-the-scenes tours are offered by Lyric Opera every so often. More...
Es un lugar muy lindo limpio hermoso muy interesante
Es un hermoso edificio muy limpio bello lugar
They have a great outdoor private bar. Good views of the river and city to the east.
This place is an absolute marvel.
I love the Civic Opera House. I went to go see Jesus Christ Superstar Live Broadway and I had front row seats and it was amazing. Every seat is a good seat
Beautiful venue, helpful staff
King James Bow Down
Beautiful place. Went for a graduation. Nice place
Attended my nephew's graduation, we had great seats and the Acoustics were pretty good.
Great shows and a beautiful theater !!!
Beautiful opera house.
Great architecture and show, acoustics were great although i wish the orchestra was a bit louder, was in the 6th floor and 4th floor for Lyric Performance of Die Walkure and I felt it was a little too far away to see it as well as I wanted but still very cool theater so I did not mind. the staff was not super nice but still very helpful. Great place to see a show. Beautifully done inside. Acoustics are amazing. Not a bad seat in the house really. Middle balcony floor 2 is the best imo.
Great chicago landmark. Technexus fan.
Arrive early to take some nice balcony pictures and bring some opera glasses.
What a beautiful place to watch an opera!!!
This Art Deco masterpiece is home to Lyric Opera of Chicago. If you are able to visit it, be sure to take note of the famous fire curtain in the theater, as well as the numerous decor details, such as the tragedy/comedy mask motifs, throughout the lobby and theater.
Always a peaceful pleasant experience, though beware of you are sitting near someone who drank too much...
Beautiful venue with easy access to train
Saw the dress rehearsal of Mozart's Cosi fan Tutte
Home to one of the best Opera Companies in the Country. Wonderful acoustics

Fascinating architecture! Stunning! A must see!
Fun family event at Lyric. They went above and beyond.
We are season ticket holders and drive down from Madison, WI 4 times per season to enjoy the excellent performances. Beautiful facility, very clean and cared for. World-class talent with a varied selection every season to appeal to all audiences. Love the pleasant and efficient staff. Parking in the Poetry Garage is economic and convenient. They offer special rates for opera goers. Several dining options within the opera house and surrounding area, depending on the day. Plan to be lifelong attendees. More...
I work in the Lyric Opera building, so of course I like it.
Fancy and comfortable. Lots of bathrooms with lots of stalls. Auditorium is gorgeous, leg room ok, seats comfy.
See an opera, you'll love it!
We attended the Family Day, great experience, but so many kiddos hopefully they expand it for next time.
Very nice building. Hosts a cafeteria, barber, gym, rooftop, and yoga studio. Great views!
Elegant and welcoming at the same time
We're not The Met, but almost- for less than half the price. Seats available that are still good. Great playing from the pit
Saw Turandot-fabulous show!! Love the Lyric Opera House. But!!!! They need more staff to work the snack beverages tables. Never have time to finish what I purchased and run to the restroom!! Been there many times, always the same outcome. Supply needs to meet demand. More...
Always a great time, love it!
Fabulous landmark. Wonderful institution.
Love this opera house. From it's beautiful architecture to the most eye opening performances, this place offers a very special experiences for natives and vistors of Chicago.
Gorgeous building inside and out. Why aren't we making beautiful buildings anymore?
Amazing company with great productions.
Grand setting fits the incredible performances.
Attended Faust lyric opera. World-class symphony and execution.

Building is beautiful but you go for the opera. In this case, Cosi Fan Tutti. Excellent.
Saw Jesus Christ Superstar. Wonderful show and staff!
The building is beautiful. It was also nice that the translation of the opera was displayed above the stage.
paname french restaurant
James beard awards at the lyric opera Chicago the greatest event of the year
This building is an art deco gem. Walking through the door and glancing up at the chandelier takes you back to a bygone era. The productions are spectacular and there really isn't a bad seat in the house. If you come for a performance, don't wear jeans. More...
Jesus Christ Superstar @ Lyric. Doesn't get any better than this!
Every performance is worth attending
We went to their Family Day event. It was great to get to expose kids to the opera without worrying about them disrupting other audiences. They had a 20 minutes performance to showcase different type of opera, kids get to experience with being an opera singer, learn how the fight scenes are choreographed, see the backstage and the pit, make a prop pizza and a hat, story time, try on costumes, face painting, etc They also had a quiet room as accommodation. Their restaurant kind of sucks though. I wouldn't recommend it with that price. They made a special kids menu for the event but it was pretty bad hot dog and fries. The kale and squash tart/quiche was decent. More...
Great theatre for seeing any kind of performance! I would have given 5* but we had issues with accessibility with our son and his broken foot.
One of Chicago's best places to se a play.
The Civic Opera Building houses Lyric Opera of Chicago, a must-see company with a full season of outstanding productions. This historic building from the 1920s is home to the world-class Lyric Opera of Chicago, one if the outstanding opera companies in the world. Lyric Opera of Chicago's annual season brings international stars and international audiences to this house to perform some of the greatest operas in the repertoire. More, Lyric has commissioned New works over the years, and this leaves its stamp on the repertoire. New productions of familiar works are accessible here. Tours are available at various ti.e. but it is easy to glimpse the opulence of this house by attending performances. Don't miss the main floor lobby and the grand staircases to the upper floors. The lower level has ongoing exhibits of note, and they can be viewed before and after performances or during intermission (there is a beverage concession on the lower level at opera performances). This season's program has much to offer, and it is the perfect reason to visit the Civic Opera House and see it in action. Don't miss the ornate scroll work in the hall, the elegant canisters, and other details that frame the stage of Lyric Opera of Chicago. More...
If you are a member you get the chance to dine in their fabulous restaurants, if you're not a season ticket holder there are plenty of restaurants nearby particularly Blaze Pizza and a Thai place which is fairly good in the Presidential Towers building. Metra train nearby and they have a special timefor Opera goers on Saturday night. More...
Great experience, if you are opera lover.
Went to the opera there. Beautiful art deco interior.
Beautiful uplifting space, and what a performance!!
Acoustics are great, logistics are not so give extra time to get to the venue and into your seats!
Beautiful building. Great acoustics at the mezzanine level.
My new workplace. It's awesome
Really a fantastic evening if you have dinner before the show in the Grahm room. Have desert during. The intermission. Horns up

What an AMAZING show tonight!Beautiful venue.
If you have never been to an opera at the Civic, go! No can say they don’t like opera unless they have truly experienced some of the best.
Wonderful venue; great acoustics and architecture.
It's a beautiful venue. Even in the highest seats you have a great view.
Great venue, easy to see the stage even from the 6th floor!
This was my first visit to the Civic Opera building / Lyric Opera. Amazing show in a wonderful/historic theater!
Historically beautiful what a phenomenal building love it.
Fabulous night at the James Beard Awards 2018. Beautiful location.
Opera is no longer expensive, and you definitely don't need a tuxedo to see one in Chicago. (Most people do dress up still, though.) At this point, The Lyric Opera is about preserving the former glory of the old art form. It is a registered non-profit, and volunteers are a big part of the equation at this point. Everyone should grab a date and go see an opera here. If you don't, this amazing spectacle may not survive in The Windy City much longer. Seriously, you'll wonder why you waited so long to discover opera. More...
Lovely building! Home of Lyric Opera of Chicago!
Great place to spend an evening
Beautiful building, however the seating layout is a bit inconvenient for seeing the stage well. Especially when a tall person sits in front of you.
The beauty of this place is breathtaking!
The Lyric Opera stands on it's own as a world-class organization. Art Deco exterior and interior have been well maintained. The marble, fixtures, sconces, theatre facade, and elegant stage take you back in time. There is a wide variety of seating, all with excellent acoustics. The range of performances and performers, come from around the world, and original music and plays are well inspired. There are back stage, orchestra pit, stage, dressing rooms, and stage designed prop workshop's open to the public. Also, occasionally the Lyric will have sales of costumes, mostly period pieces.Intermission offers souvenirs, and drinks. The wheelchair seating is adequate. There has been discussion about rennovation. Private box seats are available, but purchase early. The Opera House also offers ticket packages. More...
it was a WONDERFUL concert!!!!!!
Beautiful building! Even up in first balcony the view is good.
Chicago is very fortunate to have a world-class opera company like Lyric Opera. Eat your heart out, "New Yawk". Just saw one of the best overall productions/performances ever at the Lyric (I Puritani). OK, so it was a Met production, but it was HERE. Theater and lobbies are a must see -- beautiful and extraordinary. If you've never been to a Lyric performance, you're missing out on the best Chicago has to offer! More...
Holy COW, Lyric. You set the bar VERY high with this one. My only negative that sometimes my ears were being blasted off and the balance was a little funk. But I know it's not centered for the front so it's all good. But WOW. WOW WOW WOW. Run, do not walk to see this show. More...
Jesus Crist Superstar is fantastic!
Place with good atmosphere .
I went here for my cousin's graduation ceremony and this building is beautiful, and the employees were understanding and pleasant.
While in need of renovations, it is still an amazing Opera House with fantastic performers and staff.Opera glasses ( binoculars) are available for free ( just leave id) at the coat check.
A beautiful building fit for a superb opera company. You are transported back to the 30's. The interior was a magnificent example of Art Deco. It is worth going to an opera just to enjoy the building. More...
Really cool building
Lovely building and great events.
Great, classic venue for stage production.
Beautiful old theater.
Amazing experience! Beautiful singers!
Very pretty building. Depending on what your going in for it's the service. The eating and the front desk security are very nice.
Stunning place. Great show and personal service.
Like opera. Foyer is very crowded though.
Beautiful place to see an opera.
Great productions The most recent weekend, I was treated to the Pearl Fishers and Turandot, the latter being one of the productions I've ever experienced. One warning. Traffic can be bad and the Lyric now blocks off part of the street for valet and parking for large donors. Don't arrive late. They are too snobby to hold the curtain for bad weather, demonstrations or as NY other reason that one can get stuck in traffic. And, the management doesn't really seem to care. There were 50 patrons who were allowed to sit in the last 4 rows in the balcony for act 2 since the production wasn't having the usual Intermission. More...

Simply beautiful. Elegant architecture

Opera house is beautiful but nothing like what I've seen abroad
While in need of a renovation, the cast and staff make this a five star experience. FYI: Free opera glasses / binoculars available for loan with ID at the coat check

World Class at every level.
This is a great building and location to work in.
Beautiful place, but when they set it up for a concert, it almost looks like a mess. Booze is way overpriced and seats are quite difficult to find.
That was my first time ever going to an opera I really enjoyed it they are descriptive it comes a little ready or not look up here headphones that you stick in one ear if you have the distance where you can see it is a great thing to have descriptive device you can bring a pair of binoculars so you can see the people and that Expresses in the face but you probably gets out of holding them up so the descriptive device is better and being outside of the auditorium is beautiful there is expensive but it's nice to have a restaurant where you can eat before the show or after the show or in between
I am a huge Opera lover. I have been to many operas around the world, I am happy I added Lyric Opera of Chicago to my collection. The whole Opera is very shiny, I appreciated you can pay by card when buying a drink during intermezzo. 2 dollar per coat in a cloak room, programs were free. I watch I Puritani by Bellini, production owned by the metropolitan Opera NY. Excellent experience! More...
Classically beautiful building. The acoustics seemed superb for the brass quintet that played when I visited, but I was not there for opera, but instead for a graduation ceremony, so I can't comment further.
This classic Opera House is such a pleasure to visit. And the productions are always second to none. The scenery is gorgeous, the costumes are amazing, the talent is so awesome...they give me goose bumps! Also, if you want to treat yourself, order a drink before the show to be waiting for you at the intermission. Alex, on the first floor, towards the front door, is friendly, has great advice and is very consistent! Order your drinks from him for service with a smile!!! More...

Beautiful historic interior with gorgeous details. A great place to have an opera night. Expect to pay at least $4 a piece for all concessions, though.
Beautiful space to see and listen to Opera.
Beautiful building in and out. Their staff are extremely nice and helpful. You can even purchase some wine before the show.

ahh yes... the civic opera house! The amount of demolition I've done on this place is incredible! this place is about 95%office space and 5%opera space. It's defenetly haunted, ask any guard or person that works there about "the tower club" Myself and a few guys didn't he demolition of that floor/club every night for a month we were there and we had encounters EVERY SINGLE damn night. Most of the guys that were with me won't talk about it, because it was truly scary. More...
Great venue for opera performances...
great shows and beautiful historic building
Beautiful building with decently spaced seats.
Always a beautiful building to visit and great performances by Lyric Opera!
It is a historic landmark, but know that it is an office tower. The Lyric Opera runs the auditorium portion of the building.
Vintage terracotta accents. Delightful Auditorium taking you back to earlier days with helpful and polite staff guiding you through where everything is, where to go and how to get there, (elevators if needed.)
Love this place. Grand and beautiful interior with fun restaurants and plenty of libations. Staff is very friendly and helpful.

Outstanding venue. Norma was great!
Overall nice place. Was suprisingly underwhelmed with the decor in the theater. It seemed to lack the intricate little details that other theaters seem to have. The ceiling was pretty much just solid gold colored. More...
