What makes a great website?
A great website boils down to 5 main things....
1) Have A Purpose
-Think of your website like a tool. A tool is designed specifically to do 1 or 2 things. Your website is exactly the same. It needs to be clear in describing your expertise, build your reputation, generate leads, assist with sales, and after care of customers.
2) User Friendly
-If your customers hate your site they will come to hate your business or simply just not even give you a second look. Everything is going digital, including your customers, so you have to make sure they are happy!
3) Simplicity
-Over thinking or over saturating a web page leads to customers feeling overwhelmed, which is the last thing we want. So, the old saying, "Less is More." definitely rings true here.
4) Responsive Design
-WARC estimates that around 2 billion people currently access the internet via ONLY their smartphone, which equates to 51% of the global base of 3.9 mobile users. In other words, if your website isn't mobile friendly you are losing out on 51% of your potential customer base.
5) Content
-No matter what your industry is you need to make sure your site has the proper content that backs up your claims of expertise. For example, if I sell essential oils and make the claim, "We know more about essential oils than our competitors." I can back up that claim with in depth content that shows that my statement is more than just bluster. This builds credibility with your customers and is very important for SEO as well.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
There are 10 big questions that are essential!
Establish The Scope Of Work
1) What is the budget?
2) What is the timeline?
3) What is the sites purpose?
4) What features must your website include?
5) What are your favorite websites and why?
Familiarize With Your Business
6) Do you have an existing website, and what do you like and dislike about it?
7) What does our business do?
8) What makes your company stand out?
9) Who are your competitors?
10) Who is your ideal customer?
Describe your creative process.
My creative process is as follows...
1) Acquire the answers to the questions listed above.
2) Take this information and research existing websites in their industry.
3) See what I like, dislike, or don't care about when visiting these other websites.
4) Create the basic layout for the site. (Menu, Navigation, Info Blocks, Call To Actions, etc.)
5) Implement fonts, colors, imagery, and animations that coincide with the clients brand.
6) Deploy the rough draft to a staging server and share access with the client and wait for feedback.
7) Take feedback and make adjustments.
8) Repeat steps 6-7 until the client is 100% satisfied with the final product.
What information do you need from a client before you can start work?
The typical workflow for working with a new client boils down to a 7 step process...
1) Assessment
We sit down in person or via video conference and discuss the needs, wants, and wishes that are desired for your website. We assess what the cost behind these needs would be and the timeline behind the project. Once agreed upon we move to the next phase.
2) Planning
We plan out a road map for the website design and development. This is done by building a skeleton framework of what pages will exist, what features will exist, and how they will be implemented through a scope of work.
3) Staging Area
We deploy our base framework to a staging server for building and collaboration. Here you, the client, can view the progress of the website at anytime and give feedback on the progress. We encourage collaboration to ensure maximum customer satisfaction.
4) Collaborate
Through video conferencing or in person working meetings, we enjoy collaborating with our clients on our projects. We find that it is much easier to understand a client’s vision when they have the opportunity to review the site as it progresses and provide input.
5) Finalize
Receive final approval from the client that the website meets or exceeds there expectations. We do an entire walkthrough from beginning to end of the user experience, in order to show the client the general functions of the site.
6) Deploy
Upon final approval from the client the staging website is migrated to a production environment, where the clients domain of choice is used to display the website. We then notify the client of a successful deployment.
7) Maintain & Improve
We then work with the client, depending on what monthly services are selected, to maintain and improve the website as time goes on. Services such as search engine optimization, content creation, and digital ads management; just to name a few.
What do you love most about your job?
Top 3
1) I love the constant challenge. I grew up playing a lot of sports all the way from kindergarten up to the collegiate level, and the competitor in me sees this daily challenge as an opportunity to push myself to another level of mental fortitude.
2) I love the happiness I get to bring clients when they see their new website. It's a very rewarding feeling.
3) I love how the field is always growing, changing, and improving. It makes for a very diverse work experience that ensures, at the very least, I never get bored.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I watched my parents struggle to make ends meet. Get laid off due to economic disasters. Worry about what there boss thought about them or if they were working hard enough. I went to college for Biology, hated it the entire time. I felt like I was swimming upstream the entire time and not getting anywhere. I'd always enjoyed technology, design, and photography so, I dove head first into my passions. 5 years later, I have a healthy book of clients, an exceptional work ethic, and I produce high quality products and services. I love the independence that owning my business allows me and relish in the challenges it produces as well.
