One of of the best restaurants in Marin.  Latin food with an Asian flair.  Excellent flavors. Nice service and atmosphere.

We went to LaVier after a small wedding ceremony and had the most wonderful time! The food is DELICIOUS and there's a lot of variety to choose from, and the general atmosphere and kind, jovial nature of the staff created a perfect place to celebrate and enjoy each other.Thank you for creating such a welcoming place that serves such tasty food! Wow.  What a fantastic experience.  My wife and I showed up here a little after 5PM on a Thursday and were the first people before the dinner rush hit.  The menu can be a bit overwhelming, but our lovely waitress Nancy guided us along.  We started with a fried plantain w/chorizo appetizer and it did not disappoint.  It was the perfect size for two people. The contrasting flavors of sweet plantain, meaty chorizo, and wonderful sauce were a clear indicator we were in for a treat! For our entree, my wife had the whole grilled fish, which was cooked perfectly flaky but still moist and well seasoned.  It's a BIG portion, so we were happy to have some extra to take home.I went with the Chile Relleno Bocadillo and was blown away! It was also a hearty portion size, but was so darn good I didn't have any left over to take home. After our meal, the Chef (Guillermo) came out to check in with us and get some feedback.  This is such a great little touch that most restaurants just don't do anymore.  Based on our experience, it seems that the employees at this restaurant truly care about hospitality and making great food. They've made repeat customers out us for sure! Today was our first time in, we came for lunch and are ready to declare it a regular spot :)I had a world-class Ropa Vieja which was so super filling it almost made me wish we hadn't started with an appetizer of "Popped Chicken" - which was so good I'm glad we did. Hint: Poppers come with 3 sauces, use all 3 on each bite for flavor bliss! My wife had Huevos Rancheros and loved it. Wonderful owners, Chef Guillermo and his wife are delightful and a nearly full house at 1:30 on a Monday speaks to the regular crowd of happy customers. Love this place - on "C" Street in San Rafael, he bright yellow place with all the plants out front. Enjoy!! More...

Just discovered this gem of a restaurant in downtown San Rafael. Really well prepared and interesting dishes. Bob had the chille relleno and I had the Mexican chicken Caesar. Both were delicious, as were the generous sized glasses of wine. Lovely surroundings as place is filled with house plants and cool sculptures.  Highly recommend this place! More...

This is by far my new favorite restaurant in San Rafael. Everything on the menu I have tasted is incredible. My very favorite is the Chile relleno. Unlike any I have had anywhere including Mexico. My biggest problem is getting past it to order something new. I've gone with many different people here and everyone loves it. The flavors are complex and savory. If you love good flavorful food you will not be disappointed. The staff are friendly and helpful and the atmosphere is warm and homey. More...

This is an awesome find.  Originally we were looking for Brazilian but the closer we looked at menu, realized this has lots more variation going for it.  I had the Carnitas, subbed the carbs for veggies that were mouth watering.  My better half ordered the flank steak with chimichurri.  Glenda our server was super at helping us navigate to lower carbs, but veered having the fried Plantains.  Ask for extra Chimichurri to spread on those for an out of this world exotic Latin Enfused treat!  We'll be back. Ahhhhh-mazing! Out of the world good. Incredible. Super extra yummy! Delicious to the max. What else can I say? The food here is to die for. I have brought three separate people here, and they have all been very impressed with the food. I mean, they were practically speechless. The fish tacos are the best thing to happen to fish tacos. The halibut over risotto and veggies is outrageously tasty. And LaVier does NOT skimp on the potions of fish. I mean, those fish tacos are fully loaded, and my halibut was a really big fillet. A couple of the people I brought had dietary restrictions like being gluten-free or being pescatarian. They had NO problem finding plenty of options to choose from, and they were very pleased with the meals (in addition to the selection). So, it's Latin Fusion... with what? Caribbean? French? Not sure, but the flavors are awesome. The decor inside is a little nuts, though. It looks like a kitschy souvenir shop exploded inside. There are beads and knickknacks and lots of stuff all over. There is not a lot of seating, but I have never had to wait. I am honestly surprised this place doesn't regularly have a line around the block. That said, each dish is $20+ on average, so it's a pretty pricey lunch! Parking is tough because it's on C, but there is a decent public parking lot across the street. Service is always good, and I love that the serving staff wear chef's coats. More...

It was my first time visiting this little gem off 4th Street. Immediately upon arriving I knew this was going to be special. The lush plants outside and the festive, thoughtful decor inside had me very excited. This place came highly recommended, and they did not disappoint. The service was excellent!! The hostess that greeted us was very warm and genuine. I'm not sure if it's a family run place, but they definitely give you the sense of welcoming you into their home and making sure you're very comfortable. The menu had way too many amazing options, between the 5 of us we ordered many things so that we could all try as much as possible, and every single thing that hit our table was "oooooh'ed" & "ahhh'ed" over! Some of my favorites were the popcorn chicken, the plantain appetizer with chorizo, and the lamb!! Omg, that lamb is to die for!! The sangria was also incredibly delicious. I'm excited to get back to this place to try more of their incredible dishes. It's an instant favorite for all of us! More...

WOWOWOW! Please -- if you are even thinking of coming here just come! My main regret/ disappointment is not finding this place sooner. I'm shocked it's not a Marin staple like Sol Food (and the food here is better!) The food is amazingly authentic and full of flavor (plus there's so much variety). The vibe here is also super charming, vibrant, but still classy. :) We got a few things - the nacho fries, popcorn chicken, AND glazed shrimp entree..each thing was incredible but we ended up realizing that it was wayyyy too much food. We rarely go out to the same restaurant twice in a year since there are so many but we have gone here twice within a month. Ultimately I think a restaurant experience is not just about the food, although Lavier gets food right, but also about the decor, the lighting, the music, and ultimately the overall experience. There are many restaurants in the entire bay area and this is one of the few that get all of those ingredients right. Too many places are minimalist wood and polished stainless steel cookie cutter establishments with open kitchens and teeny portions. Not only is the food Inventive and attractive but it is also abundant. So make the trek to San Rafael, keep your ear out for the music playing on the street and enter into an all encompassing dining experience. And be careful as your eyes may be bigger than your stomach. More...

Another great dinner here. With out-of-town guests here in Marin, where else to go? Knowing how popular this little delight has become, we were lucky to reserve a table for five at five on a Friday.Arrived, seated and order taken quickly and efficiently. We were pretty hungry after climbing around Cascade Falls and Mt. Tam, then Stinson Beach, so we ordered three bowls, not cups, of their tortilla soup. Very tasty although a tad on the thin side. Could benefit from a larger dose of chicken and maybe some fire-roasted red peppers. Still yummy and tangy way to start off the meal. That was followed up with two Thai Fusion salads, a go-to second course. The special, or one of the several this evening was filet of halibut sauteed in olive oil, capers topped on a coconut risotto and grilled fresh vegetables. It was as good as it sounds. We shared a bottle of the house pinot, which wasn't the one listed on the menu. And it too was delicious. Lavier continues to meet and even on occasion exceed expectations. Our Chicago friends loved it. Yours will too. More...

The decor is cozy and intimate, probably not something my 20-something son usually looks for at lunch, but it's perfect for, well, the patrons that were there! Ladies day out and business lunch meetings. I can imagine this would make a great dinner date spot. Lavier promised fusion and fusion they brought. My adult son order plain ol' street tacos. They were exactly as anticipated. I ordered a chicken curry Thai dish. I was expecting some kind of spin, but it was spot on Thai--and good. Service was pleasant yet speedy, in consideration of the lunch hour, thank you very much. This little gem is REALLY good. Honestly, Sol Food is way overrated anyway. The restaurant is super inviting with it's tropical eclectic decor...makes you feel like you're in Puerto Rico. The owner has great taste. I ordered the chili relleno picadillo; a poblano chili stuffed with pork picadillo, cheese and topped with guacamole, sour cream and picked red onions and crispy onions. WOW....so good. The sauce on the bottom was so complex but balance perfectly. This chef really has a talent for putting together flavor profiles. What a spectacular little place. I loved everything I ordered. The location is tiny and cramped but worth the wait. When we arrived for our 7 pm reservations we had to wait a little for them to clear the table but it was so worth it. We ordered beer, which did not go to the top of the glass meaning it was probably from bottles. This doesn't bother me. We ordered the nacho fries appetizer, which might seem like a lame choice to snootier individuals BUT I HAVE NO REGRETS. The fries were perfect and crispy, the beans added this amazing flavor, the Pico and guac were fantastic. I wish I could have these nachos daily. In regards to some other reviews - the fries in the center did get a little soggy but I don't think that took away from the greatness of this dish. I ordered the vegetarian chili relleno. It was amazing. The beans were a little watery but it didn't take away from the flavor. The chili was packed to the brim with amazing veggies (broccoli, green beans, carrots, tomato). There was a perfect amount of melted cheese and the guac on top was a great addition. There was also the perfect amount of spice in this dish. I could eat this weekly. It was fantastic. My boyfriend ordered the mole enchiladas. The mole was definitely on the sweeter/chocolatey side. If that's how you like your mole, you'll be happy. But the chicken was great and the rice was pretty good. So this is definitely a must try spot but I would recommend you make a reservation ahead of time. I saw people try and just walk in and they were told it would be an hour and a half wait. More...

I think this place is adorable, I sort of want to live in it, or trick out a room in my house in a similar vein.  Service has always been hit and miss, not bad enough to really gripe about, just not super on it - either at the front door or often just on general service.  The food has always been good, I've gone both with larger groups for business lunches and also with just two of us - haven't ever heard any complaints.  I don't suggest it for larger groups - we just couldn't seem to get super comfortable or hear each other.  I'm not a fan of their sangria, which has been the only downside for me, as this is a place where sangria really makes sense as an option.  I like to go when there are just two of us, grab a little table in a corner, and relax over a leisurely lunch - it comes out a little slow, so choosing to experience it as "leisurely" will help your attitude ;) More...

Giving this restaurant a simple yelp review gives it no justice. From when you walk in the restaurant from the beautiful decor, every little intricate piece clearly hand picked with pride and love. To the atmosphere of nice, warm people who treat you with smiles and honest opinions on the menu. Then lastly where this review can give no justice and you must go experience for yourself the food! The food from start of the visual appeal of bright, healthy colors and presentation to the taste. My friends and I tonight (total of ten) came here to celebrate my girls birthday. Most of us never being here we first sat in awww of the pictures, light fixtures, talking about how when we come back (which we are going to make it a bimonthly thing now) that we will have to sit in a new part of the restaurant each time to enjoy every part. Then we started looking at the menu which is a good size. Not overwhelming but a decent size paired with chefs specials. Some of us ordered the hibiscus iced tea, I ordered the horchata and the birthday girl the hot horchata latte. Great start! They then treated us to some appetizers on the house and we followed it with our own. Ceviche, popcorn chicken and myself the Mexican Nacho Fries. I know you might think ehhh Fries, I was thinking the same but I was starving when I walked in and glad I was. These fries, I have no idea how to explain them. Except somehow they were not fries, and just like the restaurants decor every bite tastes different but equally if not better. Then we ordered some menu items and some chef specials. I will just talk about my dish since I enjoyed every bite. I ordered a chef special a fish trio taco dish. I was actually torn between two dishes but she asked how hungry I was and like I said I was starving at the time of ordering so she directed me to this. Right there, I knew I liked my sweet server Alma because this dish was $5 less than the other so trust was built instantly. When the dish came just wow. Not only was it beautiful on the plate, the fish clean and lightly battered but the taco it was on must have just been made and I mean like smashed right there (I don't know much about those soft tacos with a slight chew) and cooked. From someone who could care less about a taco, this dish will keep me coming back.To end this because my fingertips are getting tired and my friends telling me to get off the phone. It was just a nice experience. The chef said hello and made sure we were okay (Guillermo), the owner had a nice chat on our way out to asked us what we thought (Gabriela) and our server like I said was great. A non overwhelming environment. Every little piece and part of this restaurant had been thought about, clearly. Thank you guys it was a great way to start my friends birthday who means a lot to me. I went to LaVier last night for the first time with a group of gal pals.  I had driven by and was intrigued by the décor out front.  Walking into LaVier is a bit like going on vacation, it's so unlike any restaurant in Marin.  The servers were very nice and pleasant, but the service is not fast.  I am cool with that, in other countries that is a given.  They want you to stay, eat, talk, drink and enjoy so they don't rush you.  All four of us got something different and everyone was happy and satisfied.  My shrimp was a special of the evening, it had friend plantains and garlic and lime and it was sublime.  Loaded with shrimp and flavor, I couldn't eat it all.  I pared it with a lovely glass of Prosecco.  If you want to try something different and flavorful try this festive restaurant, go for the décor stay for the food! The mix of Caribbean flavors was wonderful. We both chose Cuban-influenced dishes and they may have been better than anything we had in Havana. There was a wide range of unusual offerings, but they all sounded delicious. The atmosphere is colorful and artsy. A good complement to the food. We highly recommend LaVier. More...

Finally made it here for lunch today and was impressed beyond words. Flavor. I took my work group here and everyone was super impressed and grateful for my choice. We were given two menus to peruse. I couldn't make it past the specials menu and honestly never read the main menu. That just means I'll be back as soon as possible. Everything looked so good and I had a 3 way tie for my choice. My waitress helped me choose between the 3 way fish tacos, the Chicken Mole Enchilada's, and the Chili Rellano Picadillo. OMG. This is the best Chili Rellano I have ever had in my life. Instead of breaded and fried the traditional way it was instead stuffed with pork, cheese, lettuce, cabbage, pickled onions, and rice on a delicious red sauce. It was a very generous portion that filled me up nicely. Not always a successful outcome with hungry me!Gabriella and Guillermo were both present. Having the owners there and checking in on you is the best thing a restaurant can do. It warms the soul in addition to the belly. These are such nice people and the care they put into their 'fusion' fair is inspiring. I felt prices were fair for the quality and amount of food. Do yourself a favor and check this place out. I just visited LaVier for the first time tonight for dinner with friends and it was absolutely incredible! The atmosphere is fun and cozy, and the food was amazing. We started with the popcorn chicken (delicious!!) and a chef special, the corn canoe with shrimp, also delicious. The flank steak, carnitas and ocean tacos (one crab, one salmon and one shrimp) were all spectacular. The chef came out to our table at the end of our meal to ask how everything was which was super friendly. The staff was extremely friendly also. Our waters and drinks were constantly refilled. Well, as usual, Yelp does not disappoint! Amazing food and Alma was an amazingly polite and gracious server and the food was delish! We started with the mole empanadas then I had the carnitas and my husband the pork chop! Nothing went home tonight! We shared a bottle of Albariño for a modest price of about $30 and could not be happier to find a new place to become regulars at. The chef has has his hands in many types of Latin flavors and they all sing in this delightful place that reminds me of Miami or Latin America! Bon provecho! More...

Gabriella and Guillermo catered our wedding 8 years ago and people still talk about how amazing the food was ("best food at a wedding ever"), so as we planned our trip back to the Bay, we were really excited to learn that they had a brick and mortar establishment.  (Side note: this was an Indian wedding & Guillermo taught himself to make dishes to match that astounded the family with their authenticity.)Our enthusiasm was handsomely rewarded: the food was stellar and we were treated like family.  To start, we had a tempura oyster special with wasabi and poblano cream that was something only Guillermo could pull off: one of the accoutrements was pickles - sounds odd, but it added just the right sour and acidic note.  Next, we had the spinach salad with grapefruit - perfectly balanced with what I believe was Point Reyes blue cheese: a perfect choice for its strength that most other places would pass on due to the cost. The guava shrimp special was also spot on - the guava added a wonderful acidity without rendering the dish cloyingly sweet.  My wife had the fish adobo which was amazing - usually fish can't hold up to the spice on this dish, but again, Guillermo nailed it.  Finally I had the lamb chops, which were miraculous: a balsamic glaze offset against Caribbean flavored rice, reminiscent of a Thai satay.  I will always order this dish on every return trip to the Bay.  To top it off, our extremely picky kids (5 and 7) plowed through 3 plates of their Cuban rice and beans and asked to get some to take home for the next day.  Astonishing. And every trip henceforth will incorporate a stop at LaVier. I met a friend for our annual holiday lunch and we were so glad to have chosen LaVier, our first time here.  As soon as we walked in, the theme of the restaurant is expressed in the atmosphere with decorating that makes it fun to be there before we even ordered.  The music was a little loud with the ceiling speaker right over our table, but the waitress turned it down for us without hesitation as soon as I mentioned it.We split the Mexican French Fries Nachos as our appetizer.  It was a fantastic fusion of traditional fries with a Mexican flare.  We each ordered Lamp Chops for our entree, which was excellent.  For dessert, we split a delicious slice of warm Rum Cake, which wasn't on the dessert menu but was brought to our attention by our waitress.  It was the grand finale to a great meal experience. Looking forward to my next visit to experience the rest of their menu! More...

This restaurant has one of the coolest ambiances I've seen in a while...starting with all the plants outside and bright yellow paint making it feel like you're entering a jungle oasis. The inside is decorated like you are visiting a home somewhere in Latin America with lots of color, interesting art, plants, pillows on window seats, mixes of patterns, and all sorts of interesting wall/lighting decor pieces. That's just the scene. Now the menu...everything you read makes your mouth drool. I had the huevos rancheros (with a handmade corn tortilla) that was not your typical and very tasty. Everyone seemed to like their meals and the plates were clean when we left. I would recommend this spot. Great date spot. More...

Wow, just the entrance to this place is right out of a Garcia Marquez novel. And, once inside, you are somewhere magical in Latin America. And then comes the food. When was the last time you tried Tempura platanos? Or possibly the best mole you've ever had? Last but not least, you can finally enjoy a strong sangria, not the water down thing being served in a lot of places. Having tried extraordinary restaurants like Nopalito, Cholita Linda, La Taqueria, Papaito and Limon, I'd said that this is one of the best Latino food restaurants in the Bay Area. We had dinner after the Marin Symphony Choral @ St Rafael church in San Rafael. LaVier was an oasis of fresh lively music, an eclectic atmosphere & awesome food. The menu is extensive, lots of S American & Mexican favorites w/twists. I had the tempura oysters, w/a washbi drizzle, a bit of citrus dressing & spicy pickles. Batter was light & flavors balanced. Heaven! My friends had Chicken Mole, Flank Steak & something w/beef that translated to 'old clothes.' He was enraptured....The other two dishes were excellent with the mole being exceptional. Service was pleasant but they were busy. I got the feeling that this was the norm since multiple people checked in w/us. Dessert Flan & a version of Creme Brulee were both on the heavy side for dessert w/the Brulee being the better. One note, wine by the glass was inconsistent on the fill. My first was a bit short, a large thick glass, way less than 1/3 full. The next was better & another's looked even different. I think for beverage control there should be a short carafe with a line on it to use as a reference for consistency of pour. Fair to the house & the customer. We made reservations through Yelp & it was a breeze! Note, they use your first name. Overall, it was such a exotic fun experience, the decor really created an atmosphere that I craved to return to! The atmosphere and decor made it feel like we were visiting old friends and breaking bread (or tostones). Very charming. My husband had the lamb stew and I had the lime shrimp. And, was it good? Oh my. Quite! The shrimp dish was so good that I ordered it on our second visit five days later! All 6 of us thoroughly enjoyed this restaurant. I'm a big fan of Whipper Snapper a few blocks down from here so I was eager to try out this place which has some similar overtones. The 2 story parking garage across the street ensures a short hop from your car. First thing is although they don't have an outdoor patio like the Snapper, which is a huge plus for me especially on nice days, but nonetheless the decor inside is fantastic. They try to bring a bit of tropical paradise into it and succeed. I have never been in a restaurant with so many plants. It's as if you stepped into a botanical wonderland. Well I'm exaggerating a tad, but the place is really cozy with rustic wall coverings and blasts of color everywhere. The tables are all different and some are provided with extra pillows. It all comes together really well in a casual manner that fits with the style of food. There is a beautiful aquarium on the way to the clean bathroom which turns out to be a video screen lol!I would describe the food as Latin fare with a twist of colorful veggies and fusion of comfort savories. There is a sense of pride in the cuisine. I wouldn't say the flavors were better than "Snapper", but there appears to be more variety.  The puffy fish tacos (supposed award winners but I should have ordered standard tortilla as the plantain base was better as an appetizer), gorgeous lamb shanks, salmon, etc, were all very good and really nicely presented. Desserts were devoured. Traditional flan looked perfect and my chocolate cake was a dense rich wedge of decadence sure to satisfy any fine chocolate craving.I love Sangria and enjoyed this one very much although it seemed a tad pricey at $35 for the pitcher, turned out to be a great value as it was plenty enough for 6 of us with refills. Certainly more pricey than the average Mexican restaurant, but this is no average Mexican restaurant. It's special. Everything was in line with the good value I feel we received. Service was fast, friendly and accommodating. This is my kind of place; casual, comfortable, unpretentious, but creative with above average flavors. Awesome, now I have two local places to satisfy my cravings for Latin/Caribbean fare. Whipper Snapper patio on warm days, and LaViere on cooler days where you can find paradise indoors! More...

I brought my family here to celebrate my moms wedding and I'm so happy we chose this spot. First of all the chef, Guillermo, really knows what he's doing and not just in the kitchen but with the customers. He was so welcoming, funny, and he constantly checked in with us to see if we were enjoying ourselves or needed anything else. The vibe is not something you'd find in other Marin areas, its very beautiful in the way it's decorated and gives it an authentic vibe. Most importantly, the food is delicious!!! I've never had anything I didn't like here. If anything there are things I think I don't like but then I try it here and I love it. The portions are great for the amount that is paid and the drinks are strong too. Rating  4.5 for superb fresh food that is not only unique but served in generous portions!  Owners are sweet and friendly.  They show passion for what they do and we appreciate them for that!  Order and rest back because each dish is freshly made and if busy, your wait may take a while.  Worth the wait. For our first visit with my friend, I had the Cubano burger. It was huge, seemed to be at least a 1/2 pound organic beef burger with a wide slice of ham on top.  Good thing I asked them to leave out the cheese!  I was full until the next day around 4!  Kid you not.  I did manage a bite out of the chocolate mousse cake and took the rest home.  My friend order their Guava Lime Shrimp which was gorgeously presented.  Gabriela was busy helping on the floor and we had a chance to meet her which was lovely.Only complaint was the dry red velvet cake my friend ordered and refused to mention the problem to the staff.  I have no doubt they would have made it right.2nd visit was with my brother and sis-in-law. They have a huge fondness for latin food.  They each gave this place a big two thumbs up!I ordered the Coconut Chicken Curry dish.  Every vegetable in the dish seemed to have been picked out of the garden that day and the white chicken meat was tender.  That fresh, that tasty.  This is now one of my fave dishes.  We ordered the Cajun Tostones, very different than anything we tried before And SO Good.  I am a big fresh food freak and this places, imho, passes is spades!!!  The chef, Guillermo and my brother struck up a long conversation about the restaurant biz and food!  :)  Fun evening for all. We decided to try LaVier after seeing all the good Yelp reviews. We made a reservation on Yelp and were able to get in right away on Friday night but it's not clear the Yelp reservations system is used by the restaurant as they referred to a handwritten sheet and couldn't seem to find our reservation. We may have just been lucky by getting in when we did. They were hopping. The restaurant itself is cozy with fern bar tropical decor. The menu is varied and we ordered two appetizers from the specials menu: the masa ravioli and the corn canoe. Both were tasty with good flavor, but the $20 price tag for the corn canoe didn't seem justified. We also tried the shrimp tacos and mole enchiladas. Those were the best things we ate that night and my husband declared it the best mole he's had in Marin. Service was good - though it was clear they were busy. The owner stopped by to make sure everything was to our liking, which we appreciated. On the way out I bought a bag of assorted cookies (alfajores, Mexican wedding cookies, thumb prints, etc). Those were fantastic. Overall, I'd recommend LaVier. I love supporting small independent restaurants and this place has heart. We'll be back to try more of the menu (and to get more of those cookies)! More...

Came here for lunch with the wifey to celebrate our anniversary. The menu was pretty diverse and not overpriced. My wife ordered the chicken mole enchiladas while I ordered the shrimp ceviche as an appetizer & the chili relleno picadillo. All the items were very good. The ceviche was on point, & it was brought out almost immediately after we ordered. The mole by itself is very rich & decadent which can be a bit off putting after awhile but when mixed with the everything on the plate it was absolutely delightful. The same can be said for the picadillo. Just an amazing array of flavors at play & they all complemented one another. However, I take a star off for it taking 25mins to receive our meals despite us being the only two in restaurant. All in all, this place was definitely worth trying & I would certainly consider visiting again when in the area. More...

The beef tacos are good served on a homemade tortilla and if you have the sauce, it is SPICY, and delicious. The ambiance is awesome and relaxing. The menu is mostly creative renditions of familiar Latin dishes - some Mexican, some Cuban - but there are also some Asian items (like coconut curry), and some I couldn't place. I had salmon with a horseradish beurre blanc over polenta & roasted vegetables. Where did that come from? It didn't really matter because it was delicious. So was the Chile relent picadillo. Service was super friendly, if a little inconsistent. They make everything fresh, so we didn't expect speed, but there was some confusion among the servers as to who was covering which tables. Tonight's experience was still good but not as good as my first time. The first waitress we had started out nice. When my husband ordered a tea drink I told him is was only lightly sweet, since he doesn't like sweet tea drinks and I tasted it before. For some reason she didn't like that and totally took me on asking me if I had ever had it before and that no one has ever said it was too sweet. I responded, " yes that is what I said it was lightly sweet." When it got to be about 30 min I asked Maddie, who is a very nice waitress I have had before, if we could get some chips and salsa, as they usually give them to you. She came right out with them and said she could bring more if we needed them. She was the one attentive to us and helped us from then on out. She is so sweet!  My husband had the 4 taco sampler and loved them. I had the salmon over risotto with vegetables. The vegetables were delicious and perfectly cooked, the risotto was incredible and the salmon flavor was good but it was over-cooked and dry. The sauces over the top are bursts of amazing flavors. It tasted Thai, maybe curry, flavor. Had they not overcooked the salmon it would have been a 10. Had we had Maddie the whole time, we would have rated it 5*. You have to know this place is a one hour+ wait for your food. I know that and plan for it so I am ok but you can not be in a hurry when you go. Minus the overcooked salmon this time, everything I have tried, from appetizers to drinks to the meal are really scrumptious!!! More...

I've been now twice. And each time I wonder why I've waited so long to come back. Its stroll in casual so something about the non-hype, relaxing atmosphere makes me just stroll out and forget it was so good. Warm tortilla chips, refreshing ceviche, this time I had the enchiladas Swiss. Sounded weird and good with a tomatillo sauce over flour tortillas wrapped with beef or chicken and roasted peppers inside with that melty cheese. Comfort food. I needed some of that tonight as salve for my drama-filled love life these days. It did the trick. Tangy and unctuous, alongside some white rice, I cleaned my plate. My friend, my female friend-boys need to just go away sometimes-had the carnitas. Shredded and moist with plantains, salsa, pickled onions, black beans and rice with homemade corn tortillas to scoop up the pork, made for hearty and delicious fare. Is this destination worthy if you live in the city? Probably not. But if you're in marin and want something not quite Mexican or Peruvian but something fusion, in a pleasant relaxing environment, then come enjoy. The cocktails are good. Pass on the desserts though. I'll be back hopefully sooner rather than later. More...

This is probably my new favorite restaurant in San Rafael! We came here for lunch and the combination of flavors, aromas and textures were heavenly. Very cool and hip spot in the center of San Rafael. I have yet to be here, but I have heard people say amazing and positive things about LaVier, so I finally decided to pop in for dinner. I made reservations in advance, which was helpful because it secured our spot, it was literally popping inside, packed with people. The space seemed super small because it was a full house and loud, but i didnt mind it, i still had a great time. My stepmother and I ordered an appetizer to share which was super delicious and I ordered Maya Shrimp tacos for my main course. I was soooo stuffed. The food isn't just Mexican, Or Peruvian, its a combo of everything, very Sol Food. We brought our own bottle of white wine, payed the cork fee and drank that bad boy, which was a great combo with food we got. I would most def come here again with a reservation and try other amazing plates which caught my eye. More...

Don't usually go to San Rafael, and used Yelp to find this place. What a gem! Couldn't get past the starter menu, because everything looked so interesting. Went with a friend and we had 4 starters which were quite wonderful. Loved the imagination in decorating the place as well. Here you have a conventional rectangular store, in which the owner was able to create intimate spaces using plants beads and other decorative items. It was like a mini high end restaurant with lots of privacy. The fusion part was also very interesting. Met the owner, and she is definitely global in her approach to food and life. More...

My daughter & I were planning to go to another restaurant, yet when we saw the tropical exterior of LaVier we decided to give it a try. Our first encounter upon entering was not a warm one. The person at the front desk ignored us for some time while working on something. Once we were seated we learned the same woman would be our server and were disappointed in how long we waited for her to take our order. I had opened my yelp app to read the reviews as we had not before coming in and she must have noticed that as she apologized for the delay then proceeded to tell us she was dealing with a difficult situation. She tried to be friendlier to us at that point, but needs work in providing timely & attentive service. . Now for the food. I ordered the vegetarian coconut plantain and it was mouthwatering good. I loved it, but wanted more. It was plated with a spinach salad that although quite good, it covered the plate and the plantain was buried underneath it. It seemed more like a spinach salad with an appetizer plantain. Maybe next time I'll just order two of the appetizer plantains. The interior of the restaurant was just as charming as the exterior and provides a fantastic ambience. I will return to give this place another try as the menu offers several great sounding items and I really enjoyed the ambience. More...

So you go here for one reason, the food! If you get worked up over how restaurants look or want the waitstaff standing by your table to top off your water every time you take a sip, then dont go to LaVier - BUT if you want amazing flavorful food and dont mind waiting in line to get in... then LaVier is a must go type of experience! Had dinner here with a party of five and had an amazing experience! Sometimes fusion food can seem confusing on your taste buds, but this restaurant executed their dishes perfectly. With flavors of savory, salty, sour and sweet, you can get everything you want in one bite. The prices seem a little higher, but after hearing the meats were all organic so it's worth it. Something wonderful has landed in downtown San Rafael.  En route to LaVier I mentioned that they feature "Latin Fusion" fare and was asked "fused with what"?  Leprechauns and rainbows, perhaps; the food is really delicious.  Calling LaVier's interior eclectic really does it no justice.  It's someone's vision and the origins of that vision are as mystifying as the fusion question.  There's a section of colored lights topped by live houseplants with a tiki creature popping out from the top and another area featuring a full screen with tropical fish images floating by.  Oddly, the sheer volume of decor provides a nice visual break between tables and makes for a pleasant and unique dining experience. There's generally nothing happening in this section of town but LaVier appears to be changing that.  They'd not received notice of my OpenTable reservations but squeezed me in anyhow, to what appeared to be an already full house.  The theme here is abundance and if the decor didn't already make that clear, the menu does.  A hugely ample regular menu was accompanied by an entirely separate second menu of Chef's Specials.  The dessert menu was two-sided and featured 15 items.  If you have an opportunity, study the menu in advance as it might take a while to attempt to do so on-site.  A special occasion dictated that my party of 3 start by sharing a Corn Canoe ($20) and Mole Empanadas ($14).  Look at those photos; they speak volumes.  We licked those plates clean.  Guava-Lime Shrimp ($24) was a fabulously tasty entree as was a simply wonderful Bistec La Res ($16).  I've rarely tasted more savory beef.  Pescado Asado ($21) was lovely but excessively bony and our server did not offer to filet it; as a result, I'd not choose this menu item again.  LaVier seemed a bit challenged by their popularity as the time lag between ordering, receiving starters, and receiving entrees was excessive and we had a number of different servers throughout our meal.  One taste of the fare though, and much is forgiven.  Order, or bring a bottle of something ($15 corkage) and sit back and enjoy.  La Vier is bringing destination dining to this area and hopefully kicking off a new trend. Finally tried this place to see what it's all about. Cute exterior! As soon as I walked in, I felt transported to another world of green lush plants and exotic decor. Reminded me very much of Sol Food, my boyfriend and I wondered which came first. First impression was the food sounded/looked delicious off the menu and Yelp. Didn't know what to get, so I followed someone's Yelp recommendation to start with Tempura Oysters and share the lamb chops and crab enchiladas. Service was slow the night we went, but the waitress was really nice about apologizing for the long wait to take our order because it was busy. Tempura oysters were delightful! Excellent crunch and oysters were not skimpy. Interesting combo of a creamy spinach filling topped with pickled veggies and chimichurri. Then lamb chops and crab enchiladas came out. Lamb chops looked AMAZING and tasted AMAZING. Coconut risotto was very creamy and curry-like, but paired well with the roasted vegetables and figgy-fruity rosemary lamb. I love love love how tender the lamb was, and that fig sauce.. mmm! I'd come back for this dish. Crab enchiladas however were soooo disappointing. Presentation wasn't that great besides the vibrant color of orange-yellow that covered the enchiladas. Sooooo much cheese and honestly, it tasted like nacho cheese. By the time we ate one enchilada the cheese was getting cold and it was difficult to finish the second one. We didn't want to waste food so I scraped off the sauce and ate the enchilada by itself. The enchilada itself was fine, I just wish the sauce on top was something different. What a turn off. If you're not a die hard fan of nacho cheese, I recommend trying other dishes. *Because of how great the lamb chops were, I didn't let this single dish affect the rating of this place. Still recommend checking out for a fancy night out. Prices are up there but quality of food (besides crab enchiladas) is worth it! We'll be back to try more dishes and enjoy the cozy relaxing vibe. This was my fourth time eating here in the past six months and the food is outstanding. They do a great job combining flavors and I always have a difficult time deciding what to order from the menu. My wife and I ordered an appetizer that included large grilled shrimp, avocado purée, lime, and I'm not sure what else, but it was very good.  I had the Ropa Vieja entree and my wife had Pescado Asado and we both enjoyed it.  The desert was plantains that we're lightly coated in something that was caramelized (not sure what) and vanilla ice cream, which was also good.  The service was also excellent.  The place was full at 7 pm on a Tuesday night, so that's another testament to its quality. Delicious food! Nice atmosphere. I was warned via Yelp that the restaurant doesn't always have a record of online reservations so I came prepared with my printout because they didn't have ours! Food did make up for it though.

They can get very busy! Make a reservation !Incredible intimate atmosphere with furniture, art and plants. Great place for a date. Creative dishes. The food is tasty & flavorful! The presentation is lovely ! But VERY SLOW service. Long waits for the food. Our waitress didn't really check on us. Had to waive other people down to get a refill on my water. Must order the Lamb chops. Comes with mash potatoes and veggies. Lamb chops were so flavorful and extremely tender ! They were so good !Overall great food! Just need to step up their game for service. But I'll definitely be back ! Will definitely try the fish tacos next time ! More...

2nd dinner at LaVier last night. Fabulous food. Complex flavors with really clean nutritious ingredients. Every one of their appetizers/tapas was delicious. Love their creative preparations w/ plantain, both sweet and savory. Oysters on the special menu -- so yummy -- I graciously shared them with my friends -- but would have happily eaten them all myself! The lamb chops were tasty and tender, and portions generous. Especially enjoyable was their fabulous staff -- Christina, Dylan, and the owner Gabriela were personable and so much fun -- and that on an evening when they were packed all night -- all the staff was attentive and thoughtful. Delightful experience -- can't wait to return. Maybe not the place to go if you're in a super-hurry to get somewhere else. But it was so worth the wait. I'd call it a destination dinner location. RE: sound level -- it was easy to carry on a conversation at the table -- even though the restaurant was full. They've got a sound baffle on the ceiling and it makes it so comfortable. More...

Do you like sauce? Do you like awesome sauce? Because this place is nothing but awesome sauce. The atmosphere and decor are really fun; lots of plants, great lighting and the music is always on point. The chef is genius. He makes simple pico gallo taste like it should be your main course and that's just the beginning. I'm pretty sure that if you had a major illness and came to eat here you'd leave completely healed, yeah it's that good. The menu is as creative and fun as the atmosphere and if you get to meet the chef it's a real treat because he and his awesome wife are really great people. By the way the tempura plantain will blow your face off it's so good. If you want a fun night out with seriously great food, go here! If you want an amazing lunch and a huge smile on your face, go here! If you're sad and can't think of anything to pick you up, GO HERE! More...

We just left this amazing restaurant an hour ago and I am blown away by our visit. The staff was so sweet and welcoming-we felt like a guest in their home!  They really took the time to get to know us and our little ones. The owner/chef even came to our table to say hello and made us a special treat!  All of that alone would be enough reason to give a great rating but the food itself was spectacular!  Every single thing we ordered was so flavorful and delicious. What a great place! Had heard about it through friends and finally got there on Saturday night. Wonderful atmosphere and the food was incredible as was the service of Mani, our waiter. Crabs cakes were spicy and shrimp boat (?) was delectable. All of the ingredients and the seasoning were fresh and subtle for Latin food. My salmon sober polenta was really tasty,   Others had whole fish, giant prawns and chile relleno. Each commented on how great the dishes were. Dessert was a flourless chocolate cake and a mango sorbet. We',ll order them again! The charming owner stopped by several times to be sure we were happy. We definitely were and I,m going there for lunch tomorrow. More...

Avoid the Sol Food line...just walk around the corner to LaVier instead! We've been to LaVier a few times, and the food has been stellar each and every time.  For the most part, the service has been great too. (all but one time, on a night they were short staffed and even then, they were apologetic and you could tell it pained them to not be on their A-game). I think that it was likely a growing pain as they're a new restaurant.I can whole-heartedly recommend this place and look forward to trying more dishes on their menu. More...

What a little hidden GEM!!    We heard about this restaurant from a friend who lives nearby and raved about it.    We decided to give it a try and were not disappointed.   First, the space is so lovely with big towering plants and sound-proofed in a way that you enjoy the lively atmosphere of the restaurant without a deafening echo.   We watched as the plates came out of the kitchen, and everything looked delicious.   Deciding what to order was nearly impossible!!   We started  with the Fundido (cheese fondue).  It was delicious, but the star of the show were the homemade tortillas.   Oh man... I just wanted cancel my entree order and just order 10 more tortillas.   I had the chili renello with pork (Specials menu).   The portion was more than generous and every bite was perfection.   The beau had the Bistec De Res which he loved.    I can't wait to make several return trips with friends and work my way through the rest of the menu.Downside:  SERVICE.   Our waitress couldn't have cared less about us from the second we sat down.    She nearly rolled her eyes when she was forced to take our drinks order, and then started to dash off before even getting BOTH our orders.    When we sat with empty plates and drinks for over 40 minutes after we were done, even being passed over by the busboy,  another waitress from the front, finally stopped on her way to the kitchen to clear our table and bring us dessert menus.   When first waitress came back to ask about the check, she was completely annoyed that we wanted coffee & dessert.    When we'd ordered our food, most the restaurant had quieted down, so it was no longer crazy-busy.    She struck me as someone who was NOT new to waitress work, and it was a really disappointing experience. We will absolutely come back to this restaurant, but maybe work on polishing the staff.   The waitress with the short blond hair - FABULOUS.   Smiling, happy, welcoming.... see if she can train the rest of the staff? The reviews speak for themselves. In my opinion, this is  the best restaurant in Marin! I've been coming here once a week for the last few months, so a review is long overdue. I am yet to have a bad, or even mediocre meal here. Chicken tortilla soup- very hearty, good spice and perfect on a cold day. I just wish they added sliced avocado to it, then it would be truly perfect. The enchiladas, both chicken and steak- are truly amazing. Smothered in a outstanding salsa verde sauce with an intense lime flavor. Wow! Honestly just as good as any I've had in Baja or Mexico City. Carne Asada Nachos- okay, so this isn't authentic at all, but delicious none-the-less. Crispy fries, topped with cheese(I believe cojita), avocado puree, beans, and salsa. Delicious! Lamb chops- some of the best I've ever had. Cooked perfectly medium rare with a amazing pomegranate glaze. The "Shrimp Canoe" appetizer- this might be my favorite thing on the menu. Perfectly cooked shrimp, melted cheese, avocado puree, roasted garlic- this is the "must have" on the appetizer menu! Get it! You'll forget that you're eating in Marin!Needless to say, I have to give Lavier 5 stars. It honestly reminds me of dining back in La Condesa in Mexico City. The food is simply amazing as is the atmosphere. My new favorite restaurant in Marin- and it's not even close. More...

Ooh la la LaVier! This could be my favorite, new restaurant in Marin. It certainly lived up to the 4 1/2 star Yelp hype. My dining companions and I started off with the Chick'N Taquitos (4 Mini Crispy Handmade Corn Tortillas Stuffed with Black Beans and topped with Shredded Lettuce, Grilled Chicken, Sliced Tomato, Pickled Onions and Roasted Avocado-Tomatillo Salsa). This wasn't some boring, fried Taquito you might find in the Trader Jo's frozen section. This was a seriously legit and flavorful appetizer. I could've eaten 5 more of them and called it a meal. For dinner, we decided to share the Grilled Flank Steak (with Avocado Puree, Sautéed Onions & Herb Salsa and Served with Cuban Rice, Baked Beans & Sweet Plantains), and the Coconut Curry Chicken (Chicken Thighs, potatoes, carrots, and sweet pepper braised in a creamy, tangy coconut-curry sauce, and served over white rice). Wow - both dished delivered a flavorful punch. I was practically licking my plate clean. There's plenty else on the menu that I want to come back and explore, including: the Little Piggy Sandwich (Pulled Pork Layered with Ham, Swiss Cheese, Dill Pickled, Mojito Aioli, and Yellow Mustard on French Roll); the Mexican Chicken Caesar Salad; and the Mexican French Fries Nachos. OMG - I'm drooling as I write this!My only gripe with the place is that the service is a bit wonky. We had three different people wait on us over the course of the evening. And one of the servers (who clearly had difficulty with English) kept trying to clear away our food while we were still eating. But it's a small quibble.Over the years, this location has housed numerous restaurants. Everything from Indian to Mexican to Thai cuisine. And yet nothing has ever been able to succeed here. I think LaVier Latin Fusion is going to break the wicked spell. Judging by the packed house and rave reviews, I think LaVier is going to be a San Rafael fixture for years to come! More...

I had a delicious Cuban pork stew that was slow cooked and served with rice, beans and tortillas that was out of this world.  My wife had some of the fish tacos and they were excellent - served in very good homemade tortillas that were on the thick side and chewy.  The service and ambience were excellent - our waiter was attentive and friendly.  I've heard it gets crowded now, but we went on the early side at 5:30 and managed to snag table. Today we met our friends David and Linda here for brunch.  Linda in particular is very excited about the place and wants them to succeed.  The restaurant is right across the street from a parking garage and around the corner from the movie theatre, so it's well located downtown.  They have been here a few times and wanted to introduce us to it.  Linda made reservations last night and noted that the place was so crowded and noisy the woman who answered the phone could barely hear her, a very good sign.  This morning was quieter and the restaurant was less crowded. We were offered our choice of tables and chose a 4 top midway back w/ straight back chairs on one side and a wooden bench w/ throw pillows along the wall on the other.  We were given regular menus and the specials menu as well as the wine/beer menu.  There is a brunch menu online, but it's a work in progress and isn't yet being offered in the restaurant.  David and Linda said the plantain tempura had been good, as were the crab cakes, so we ordered both as appetizers to share.  I decided on the ropa vieja on the specials menu but when it came time to order we learned they were out of it, along w/ the paella and the lamb chops due to how busy they had been last night.  The others knew what they wanted but it was back to the drawing board for me.  I ended up w/ a flank steak dish.  David ordered another beef dish, Linda ordered fish tacos and Alan ordered one shrimp taco and one fish taco.  David and Alan ordered coffee(their espresso machine wasn't available for some reason) and I ordered tea.  They have a box of assorted teas. The plantains and crab cakes were served and both were delicious.  The plantains were meaty and had a nice texture.  I was surprised by the chorizo in the sauce, mainly because I'm not good at reading menus thoroughly.  It was tasty and chewy w/o being greasy and I liked it.  Mixed greens were served on the side.  The crab cakes were small and tasty, though served cold.  My main dish was very tasty, w/ a flavorful sauce, guacamole, onions, bell peppers, rice and black beans.  It was cooked medium rare as requested.  Alan and Linda were surprised by the fact that the tortillas for their tacos were fried.  The dish was described as puffy and we all assumed that meant the fish and shrimp batter, not the tortillas.  They agreed they would order something else next time.  David liked his dish and took home leftovers for later. On a side note, there is a single bathroom.  It is spotlessly clean, painted a dark tomato red and decorated w/ a lovely painting on wood of plumerias and a mirror hanging on the wall w/ wing-like "windows" framing it. We found this place a little bit by chance, and what a happy accident! From the street, the restaurant looked promising, and a quick peek at the menu outside hinted that the establishment didn't harbor pretensions beyond its station. In this case, Fusion means complete liberation from the expectations of ethnic cuisine. The formula seems to be: good ingredients make interesting dishes, add imagination liberally.I tried the Ropa Vieja - a dish that made my mouth water just smiling up at me  from the menu. My biggest problem was that I wanted had a strong desire to order several other dishes as well. My dinner companion chose the Huevos Rancheros which, although not a surprising offering, promised to be creatively presented. The only quibble I could possibly find was that they were out of plantains during our visit. I would have ordered dessert if they'd had them in the house that night. Now I have to go back!Give this a visit if you're in the area, and see if they don't have something that tickles your fancy. Maybe I'll be sitting in there enjoying my dessert! More...

We had dinner here and it was excellent!  The Swiss Enchiladas with rice and beans the best that I've had since vacationing in Mexico.  The basil chicken was also outstanding.  We will definitely come back again!! More...

This is a really great new place! You gotta go --- and they are open pretty much all the time.! We read about it and stopped there before going to a film at the nearby Rafael Theater. There is a large parking structure if you cannot find street parking. Though it has only been open 2-3 months it looks well-established due to the beautiful live plants and charming decor giving the place a bit of a jungle garden in Latin America look. My husband and I were both impressed with the ambiance. And the service was great! We also met the owner when she brought one of our courses and we were able to compliment her. She was very nice!NOW! About the food!! It was excellent. We started with their very special sardines that were fried slightly and brightened by some special sauces and thinly-sliced homemade pickles. These were fresh, and not your European-style fried sardine. Well worth a nibble. Sadly, we did not have time for dessert, but my husband thoroughly enjoyed his pork sandwich (kinda Cuban style) served with a green salad and nice dressing. I loved the Enchiladas Suisas that were served with unique and delicious rice and black beans. The wine list was small, but included a nice variety. We wish them all the luck in the world! More...

Lavier is such a gem! We are so excited to have this restaurant in downtown San Rafael. The staff is so warm and friendly and the decor makes the ambience so cozy. The menu is quite extensive-so many choices! The salmon tacos on the crispy tortilla was delicious. We enjoyed the tortilla soup with a hint of spice. My kids LOVED their Little Piggy sandwich--reminded us of a cubano sandwich. I can't wait to go back to Lavier and try more dishes on their menu. You must check it out! More...

Fun atmosphere, unusual menu, delicious food, and conveniently located (just off of San Rafael's bustling 4th street, and directly across street from a large city parking lot).  Yes!!!

My family fell in love with Lavier after they catered my mom's birthday party. I had missed the party but heard nothing but good things about the food. Just visited the restaurant for the first time and was very impressed. Very pleasant atmosphere and quite busy. Definitely suggest making a reservation. The food was delicious. I had the French fry nachos and the bistec de pollo entree. I tried the poblano pepper that my mom ordered which was very tasty and had some good spiciness to it. More...

We ate at Lavier for the first time yesterday and it was simply incredible. The tortilla soup and pozole were as tasty as I've ever had. My wife and I were pausing after each bite and looking at each other and saying: "mmmmm." The entrees and desserts were just as delicious. Our two young kids loved it too and ate every bite. We can't wait to go back and try everything on the menu. Super excited to have this gem in San Rafael! More...

Delicious food. We had a sort of fried ravioli appetizer, chicken curry, and Vieja Ropa, with Creme brûlée for dessert. All excellent. Impeccable service, good pricing. What kept it from 5 stars was the seating. The wooden chairs (think church pew feeling) were painful by mid-meal. It was so crowded that each time a server came by, I was bumped. So I will be back, and bring my friends, but I will also bring my own seat cushion. More...
