Can't recommend Katie enough! I went to Katie because I was tired of being put through the assembly line at the typical PT offices. I think everyone is a unique case and needs to be listened to. I'm a very active guy and because of it I brought in a host of injuries and complications from my past. Katie is one of those few medical professionals who cares about imparting wisdom related to how your body works rather than quickly showing you a stretch or exercise from a one size fits all standard recommendation. She loves teaching! I always loved being able to take home knowledge rather than just a print out that I probably could have simply googled. If you really need and care about your rehab/health, you need to go to someone like Katie. It's a difference maker. More...

I first started seeing Katie after a full hip replacement. I required three months of therapy and she got me through it with amazing results. I am pain free and have full mobility in my hip. I was so impressed with her that I started weekly personal training sessions to keep on track with my great results and to work on my overall fitness goals. I don't think words do her justice. Her incredible focus and knowledge paired with her positivity makes physical therapy /training a great experience. Hard work under her guidance has gotten me pain free and happy with my my body. I highly recommended Katie. More...

Highly recommend KS Fitness + Co to anyone at any fitness level. Katie was my physical therapist for a second round of PT after I broke my tibia. Having come from the PT world, she understands the physiology of the body from the inside out. Combining that knowledge with her experience in collegiate sports, and a passion for continued education in both nutrition and fitness, makes her program dynamite. This is the first well rounded fitness program I have seen that builds from the ground up, establishing the correct basics to prevent injury, build strength, and improve health sustainably. I’ve gone through high school sports, weight lifting classes, and personal trainers, and nothing compares to the value her program provides. Seriously y’all, reach out and give her 12 week program a try. If you don’t see results then I guess pigs can fly :) More...

Katie was a tremendous help to me when we worked on several of my physical conditions that needed attention. Katie is very personable and easy to work with, and I always looked forward to our therapy sessions. They were actually fun! She is skilled at what she does and caring in her approach to her clients. Not only did she put me on the road to a full recovery for my original condition, but she also made helpful suggestions to address other physical concerns that I had. It's obvious that Katie is fully committed to the overall health and fitness of her clients. Strongly recommend! More...

Services

Dr. Katie Spruell helps get active adults and athletes get back to the workouts and sports they love. Her interest in Physical Therapy began as an injured athlete throughout high school and college. She played college basketball at Belmont University and spent a lot of time in PT in order to return to playing basketball as quickly as possible.

After becoming a Physical Therapist, she worked in a local physical therapy clinic where she had to see multiple patients at the same time. She was unable to provide the quality of care that she desired and is thankful that in starting her own practice she is now able to spend 45-60 QUALITY minutes with each of her patients.

Another thing Katie noticed is that there is very little overlap in restoring function, reducing pain and working out. She understands the importance of being pain-free but does not overlook the health and fitness aspect of rehabilitation. Reducing and preventing pain is not always enough.. but assisting patients in returning to their fitness endeavors and workout routines is what she loves most about her business.

Every day people in Nashville, TN consult Katie Spruell looking for ways to get back to their active lifestyles faster.

Katie graduated with a B.S. in Exercise Science from Belmont University, and then completed her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree from Belmont University.

She is certified as a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) through the National Strength and Conditioning Association. She is also trained in McKenzie Method of Mechanical Diagnosis and SFMA.

Dr. Katie Spruell is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist that develops individualized programs and educates on improper movement patterns to help her clients reach their fitness goals.

Dry Needling is a specific treatment technique used on muscle trigger points that are creating pain and discomfort. The treatment uses a thin, sterile, solid filament needle inserted into the skin to stimulate the underlying myofascial trigger points. The procedure is called Dry Needling because no liquid or medication is injected into the patient.

A muscle trigger point is a highly localized, hyper-irritable spot in a palpable, taut band of skeletal muscle fibers. Located throughout the body, trigger points have been shown to be the primary source of pain in as many as 85 percent of pain-related visits to primary care doctors.

They develop for a variety of reasons, including referred or local pain, inflammation, and tissue injury.

How It Works?
When the muscle is stimulated with the needle, a twitch or rapid depolarization of the fibers takes place. This removes the compression on the joint, nerve, or vascular tissue. As a result, the muscle activity reduces dramatically, allowing it to relax and the pain and dysfunction to decrease.

Occasionally, when the needle is inserted a patient will feel “referred pain.” This is usually a positive sign confirming the trigger point as the cause of the patient’s pain.

There are a number of theories that believe Dry Needling also stimulates the release of the body’s endogenous opiates, initiating a new healing process.

Is It Similar To Acupuncture?
While Dry Needling uses the same tool as acupuncture, the theory behind it is different. Acupuncture follows Eastern Medicine’s key principles of holistic treatment and normalizing the body’s energy imbalance.

Dry Needling is based on Western Medicine’s scientific, tested practices to restore normal muscle function.

Dry Needling Vs. Trigger Point Injection
Unlike Trigger Point Injection, Dry Needling does not deliver any medications. Therefore, the treatments can be done more frequently with no adverse side effects.

Traditional trigger point injections use a hollow, hypodermic needle to inject substances such as saline, Botox or corticosteroids. When the two treatments are compared, the literature reports numerous randomized clinical trials and one systematic review, where no difference was found between injections of different substances and dry needling in the treatment of muscle trigger point symptoms. The theory suggests that the “needling effect” is the most important part of the process rather than the chemicals injected. This does not mean that certain patients will not have greater indications or benefits with injections rather than Dry Needling and vice-versa.
