Hummus xpress

Hummus Xpress was a nice, quick dinner option.The staff was friendly, but a couple did appear very new and unsure of items offered. The process is straight forward, you get in line, pick how you want it, pick protein, pick carb, pick veggies, pick hummus, and salad and sauces. Not sure I have all right but you get the idea. My concoction was very tasty. The braised beef and ginger hummus were particularly memorable. I was disappointed they were out of rice and I had to roll with potatoes but they were fine. I was craving Mediterranean food and found Hummus Xpress not too far from where I was. The place is a quaint little dine in or takeout restaurant with a few short and tall tables. The concept reminded me of a Chipotle type where you pick your base and then get to personalize it however you'd like with different base options, proteins, toppings and dressings/sauces. My combo was the saffron rice, Aleppo beef, fire roasted gyro, roasted eggplant, sweet and spicy ginger carrots, white beans and onions, roasted red pepper hummus, tomatoes, cucumber, feta and tzaziki. I love this place for it's use of fresh WHOLE foods! The spicy and sweet carrots are BEYOND DELICIOUS. I do not live near by, but I do make my way over here because it's that good (I do not eat at chain restaurants). I like there falafel's with my meals as they aren't done in a greasy manner. The guy serving even said "it's like chipotle" when I was staring up at the menu. He was right, and you get to choose a hummus (the jalapeno one was solid). The plate comes with two meats. The chicken was fine and not fatty. The gyro was nothing like gyro meat. It was long blocks of meat marinated in what probably allows it to sit out as long as they have it there. Disappointing. The rest is what you would expect except the fried eggplant was fantastic - not too chewy and not batter fried. The guy who hooked up my meal was very cordial and happily gave recommendations when I asked. 3.5 stars but I do not want to give 3 given the game of what that means in yelp currency. I FREAKIN LOVE THIS PLACE. Imagine a well-thought out, Mediterranean version of Chipotle. I used to work very close to Hummus Xpress and would visit often. Since moving jobs, it's no longer convenient for me to travel there. But since I was in the area, I made it a point to stop for lunch this past Saturday and it was just as delicious and perfect as I always remembered. Yelp never fails! Hummus Xpress is a solid 5-star Mediterranean order-at-the-counter eatery with delicious and generous offerings. I had lunch here today and what a treat! The food was fresh, hot, and perfectly spiced. I should have taken the server's advice and ordered a bowl, which is their most popular dish, but being hungry, I ordered a plate. Too much food! My husband won't stop talking about this place, I finally put my foot down and said I'm going in!!! Little did I know I would end up falling in love with the hummus Xpress! !! It's such a cute place, I'm loving the decor, not too crowded and it gives almost a relaxing feel from the hot blazing sun outside!If you've ever been to chipotle you'll notice it's almost the same concept! The customer service is amazing! The moment we walked in, we were greet and the man was so eager to assist us. You know how you can tell when someone is confident in their food, well we certainly saw it from the gentleman helping us! He took the time to explain how it worked and then we were off on our hummus Xpress!!We both ended up with a bowl, the chicken was amazing, tender and very seasoned! The hummus was fresh and the eggplants delicious!!!! You wouldn't think there was a lot of food until you actually sat down and started eating it! It was so filling!! If you check in with yelp I did see they were offering a free sweet tea drink! I'm so happy I grabbed one of the walnut baklva!! Oh my Buddha!! This was the most amazing dessert I've ever had! This place is SO good for a quick serve type of restaurant. I was really impressed - and I'm super excited because I live just down the block. The service is fast even though I need to wait a little bit for falafel. At least I know that they are freshly cooked!The veggies are so delicious. I got roasted eggplants (really crunchy good) and paid a little more for my second choice of veggie, which was deliciously cooked kale. There are so many kinds of hummus and toppings to choose from. I like the red pepper hummus and tabbouleh on top of my bowl of rice, veggies, and falafel. I also got tahini sauce on top of everything. One of my favorite places to stop for a quick, healthy, reasonably priced lunch/meal! I originally found this place through their food truck they had at a local festival and loved it so much that I had to pop in to check out their full menu. As other reviews pointed out, Hummus Xpress is basically a Chipotle-style Mediterranean restaurant, as they make your bowl/pita in front of you. I ordered a plate (come with rice), pick 2 from 3 meats (chicken, beef, and gyro), I picked chicken and gyro (you can sub one meat with falafel as well), pick fried eggplant (a little bit burn but not a big deal) and zucchini from veggie section, pick half roast red pepper and half jalapeno hummus (yumyum), tabboulieh from 3 salad (I should have added one more scope, they are good), and took half garlic and half salsa sauce.  It is addictive.  I am only traveling for business, I will definitely come back if I have another chance.  Total $12 something with taxes. Welcome to Mediterranean Chipotle!  Okay, that's perhaps a little oversimplified and I'm guessing its a frequent comparison that drives owner Eddie Hantas nuts.  Nevertheless, the fast casual flow of the counter and the numerous possible ingredient combinations will no doubt feel eerily familiar to Chipotle goers.  Opened in 2012, Hummus Xpress is out to give the people what they want.  Tasty food at a good price, served at warp speed.  The buzz was enough to send me over to their Tempe location at warp speed on a Saturday for lunch.Look for Hummus Express amongst a throng of small businesses in a strip center on the northwest corner of Broadway and Hardy in Tempe.  Inside, a small restaurant that seats maybe 25-30 people awaits.  I'd heard the crowds here for lunch can be epic so I arrived just after 11am.  Good move (only 3 in front of me).  As mentioned earlier, the ordering system is Chipotle-esque.  Step on up and follow the flow chart above from right to left.Start with a format.  Choose from a pita, bowl, salad or plate (I opted for a bowl, which comes with rice).  Then choose from 4 meats (I went with gyros).  Then pick a vegetable (I went broccoli).  Then pick a hummus (I went jalapeño cilantro).  Then pick a salad (I chose tabouli).  And lastly, dress your meal with one of over a dozen add ons (I added chickpeas and salsa).  You also get your choice of a piece of white or wheat pita bread (white for me They do honor the Yelp check in for a free tea, but I opted for a water instead.  Lastly, I grabbed a piece of baklava (because of course).  Total cost for everything plus tax? $12.The verdict?  Delicious.  And why not?  I basically made it myself.  In all seriousness though, Chef Hantas puts out a great product with great ingredients.  Great meats, great veggies, and great pita bread (from Baiz Market, no less).  Couple that with a simple ordering process and I can well imagine the throngs that come here to get their lunch fix during the workweek.  In addition to their brick and mortar operation, Hummus Xpress also operates a food truck and offers catering options.  Lightning quick customizable Mediterranean.  Chipotle should be so lucky to offer a product this good. Think of it like a Mediterranean version of chipotle but even better! We got the plate with chicken and falafel, carrots and potatoes, cilantro jalapeño hummus and a bunch of fresh veggies and feta- topped with taziki! If you're trying to eat healthy, Hummus Xpress should be on your radar.  It tastes so good you'll swear it's a cheat meal, but you can make your bowl as healthy as you want.  The bowls are more than enough food for one person.  The plate would be a good idea for two people to share.  You start with rice and top it with one of many protein options.  You then add one of many veggie options like roasted potatoes or eggplant.  Choose one of many types of hummus (my favorite being cilantro jalapeno).  Next comes a salad option.  I love both the tabbouleh and the bean salad.  To top it all off, there are many topping options like feta, onions, cabbage, olives, lettuce, and a variety of others.  I've tried both the tzatziki and the garlic sauce to top everything off, and they were both super flavorful.  When we discovered this place, we had two meals there in one week because it was so delicious. We love this place! Their good is great, the portions are just right and it's always fast, even if there is a line. Doesn't look like much from the outside, but I'm sooo glad I stopped in tonight. I really enjoy build your own bowl type restaurants, this one was exceptionally good. The guys working there were super good about giving recommendations to us too. I got a place with rice, falafel, potatoes, spiced carrots, cabbage, pickled cabbage, cucumber, tomatoes, lentil salad, red pepper hummus, tahini and a little tzatziki. Also a white pita on the side. It was so much food, and sooo delicious. All the flavors worked together perfectly. Not bad prices for the giant portions.
