Traveled about 30 minutes after reading about this place on NJ.com and boy was it worth it. The portions are plentiful and the food is flavorful and delicious. A wonderful and unique spot to grab dinner. Owner and staff are as friendly as they come. So glad I decided to try it. I will most definitely be back. More...

Recently, my brother and I enjoyed a Saturday afternoon lunch at the Hills of Herat in Martinsville. The impressive decor was matched by Mustapha's hospitality, but the star of the show was the wonderful, fresh-tasting food. We started with the flatbread, which was the best I've ever tasted. The Shepard's Salad was refreshing. The Butternut Squash Bholani was also amazing. We also shared delicious Ashoks (vegetable-filled dumplings) and Mantus (beef-filled dumplings). My brother had the chicken kabobs with rice and I had the Dopiaza (lamb) with rice and both were savory and tender. A great custard dessert topped off a wonderful meal. Can't wait to go back. Hills of Herat is an amazing Afghan restaurant. The food, the service, the people. Everyone thing is wonderful and lovely. They give you soup and salad for free as a pre appetizer. Everything we ordered was yummy and filling. There were three sauces white, hot and green which just added to the flavor. I must say the dessert was the best part of the meal. The ras malai and phirni were awesome! I love Mediterranean food in general, but this Afghan restaurant was nothing less than spectacular. Definitely worth the drive down, your tummy will be happy with the food so your pockets won't complain :) More...

We have been going to Silk Road in Warren for many years now and often we discussed with the owner about opening a branch in the Bridgewater area.   So very glad they did and have been coming for dinner twice in the last few months.  The menu is very similar to the Warren location and the quality of food is similarly great.  Service is very good.  We are glad they are doing well and shall come back often! Tucked away in Martinsville this delightful surprise was a big hit with our Friday evening outing. I finally found a afghan place to go to in NJ and don't have to wait for my next trip to DC. Three kinds of rice to pair with any of the kebabs. You can't go wrong with any of them. The chicken kebab in some places tends to be dry but not here. Desserts were to die for. I haven't had a good firnee in such a long time and the surprise was the cream roll which while not exclusively Afghan reminded me of my childhood. My only criticism was of the curries which were under seasoned. More...

You know.... I'm really proud of this establishment. I've grown up in Warren right at the edge of Martinsville, and the turnover of previous restaurants in this same location has and still is so high. Yet, I think... REALLY hope Hills of Herat is here to stay. Truly truly. I've brought family, friends, near and far, for some solid, DELICIOUS, huge portioned Afghan goodness and they have not yet disappointed (... not a challenge I believe in you guys! ).I'm a pescatarian so the salmon kabob is my go-to. Never dry and super tender. I love the rice selections and usually ask for half and half so I can have both! Rice pudding is the best dessert here, 100 p.I've checked in here via Yelp twice? But like 50 times in my heart. More...

Excellent! Wow!  A fine dining Afghan place is a gem. Service was superb.  We ordered the hummus and the bread was soft and melts in your mouth. The lentils soup and salad was complementary and extremely flavorful. For lunch we had the filet and chicken combo and the chicken quoma.  It was delicious.  Honestly it's one of the better restaurants you'll go to so make the drive if you can as I'm sure you'll be a regular. Oh, they mentioned a Toronto location, please do it if you can, the place will be packed with happy customers from the lovely food and service. More...

This place was great! The owner was very friendly and funny. The group I went with have gone there many times, usually for any celebration within the family, and they clearly love it. This was my first.I wasn't sure what to get, so the owner was able to steer me to what ended up being perfect for my taste (Borani Banjan eggplant dish with the Salmon). I LOVED the seasoning and can honestly say this was a favorite. The pita was warm and fluffy so it went fast. It was also nice that all of their entrees come with both and salad and a soParking was easy (there's a large lot) and the restaurant itself was clean, nicely decorated, and very comfortable. We went on a Tuesday evening and it wasn't crowded at all.I'll be back with them for more celebrations. Last night my friend and I came to Hills of Herat. I surprised her with dinner here for her birthday. When we got there, we were seated right away and we felt at home. We ordered the ashak, bholani, the kebab combo, and the dopiaza for dinner. And everything was amazing. The lentil soup that was provided along with the entree was absolutely delicious. I wish I could have gotten more of it. Then we ordered the shir chai, rasmalai and Afghan Creme rolls. What a perfect finish to a great meal. We were able to speak with the chef and others that work there and they had such great hospitality. The chef had come to our table to check on our experience and we had told him how we loved everything. I would totally recommend this place. And it's byob too! More...

Came here with my family for dinner and although we didn't have good experience with Silk Road (other branch of this) we still gave it a shot. The food was good but the portions are super small for the high price. My brother and I were still hungry after we were done with our meals because of how small they were. This restaurant is an absolute treasure! My brother got reservations to celebrate a birthday based on the amazing reviews of top new restaurants... and it does not disappoint! The service was exceptional - seated right away and very attentive to the table needs. We sat down and were immediately presented with the (free) soup shown in the picture. It was so flavorful. We ordered the bholani appetizers with potato and the mantu dumplings. The bholani was this delicious fried dough filled with potatoes. The dumplings were exactly what you'd hope for. Appetizer portions were small but perfectly sized. The dinner entrees came with freshly baked bread and a salad as well as rice. The salad was eaten almost immediately - it has this light sauce (shown in picture). Yumm. For my entree I ordered the chicken qorma with the zamarud rice (shown in picture). Such a delicious sauce and the rice was incredible. Everything was amazing and they also gave a complimentary firni dessert for the birthday. Prices are very reasonable for the quality of the food. Make sure to schedule a reservation and be prepared to enjoy. Way to earn my five stars! More...

Okay, Silk Road is amazing. I have been going there for years and the quality of everything has been consistently great. When hearing people from the same family opened a new location I wondered what it would be like -- just assuming it would be different somehow because of a different name.Well, it is different. In subtle but yet noticeable ways. Subtle enough not to be able describe them well. Noticeable enough to want to come back for more.It is nice to now not only have two options in the local area but to also have a hard time deciding which one is best since they are both top notch! This restaurant definitely lives up to the yelp/ Google  reviews that it has got!!! Truly a 5 starter... We got the complimentary lentil soup to start with which was v appetizing!! The salad and the bread was fantastic!! I had the lamb  shank and it was the best i have eaten so far... Melts  in your mouth, falling off the bone, extremely succulent.... Running out of adjectives!!!We were a big group of 11 with multiple types of dietary restrictions but the menu was designed to accommodate all sorts. That is always a plus. 2 of my friends ordered lamb do piyaza and it was excellent  and so were the chicken kebabs. Hills of Herat is an Afghani restaurant offshoot of the Silk Road in Warren (the owner of Herat is the son of the owners of the Silk Road). Much like its Warren counterpart, Hills of Herat serves middle eastern favorites, with an affordable lunch special. I had the beef and lamb kabobs ($12) and they were tasty - moist and well seasoned. The meat was served with a choice of three options for rice; I had the rice with orange peel and it was excellent. The lunch special is a good value: they serve a cucumber salad, lentil soup, and bread before your meal. I would note that the portions at the Hills of Herat are pretty small; I had two small patties for my kebab, which is understandable. More...

This restaurant experience was exceptional from start to finish. We were ordering takeout for a party of 8. From the first phone call to when we picked up our food, the level of customer service and plain kindness was outstanding. As we waiting for our pick up, we were offered a warm bowl of just made lentil soup on a chilly day (delicious!). The chef came out to meet and speak to us, and it was lovely. Just had an amazing meal at Hills of Herat!! Was out shopping nearby and wanted to try something new, thanks to fellow Yelpers we were 4 mins from this place.  The location is really a hidden gem. Tucked in the corner of a strip mall in between a Chinese resto and a Quickie Mart. It wasn't very busy on a Thursday night and we were seated right away. TThe decor is modern with pictures of Afghanistan and amongst them the most famous girl; Sharbat Gula (hint National Geographic).  Mustafa our waiter was friendly and told me that I should try the lamb shanks. We ordered the shami kabob ($18), filet mignon ($26), and and the lamb shank ($23). The shami were 2 strips of beef spiced right and grilled nicely. The filet mignon was one strip but was sooooo good!  It was cooked med well but it wasn't tough at all. This was also very good.  Now my lamb shanks, oh my! was fall off the bone delicious. Tasty and filling. Don't forget to eat the yummy bone marrow inside. All entrees comes with a house lentil soup which was flavorful with a hint of spice. Handmade bread (like pita) was warm, fluffy and yummy. There was 3 dips that they provided on the table (cilantro, yogurt, and spicy).  Each entree includes a choice of rice (Kabuli, Naringe, and Zamarud). We got one each so we can try it. As we waited for our main course I asked if this was a byob and the waiter said it was 50 steps away in the next mall. I jumped to the occasion and purchased a bottle of Petit Syrah to accompany the lamb and filet.  We were so full we didn't have space for dessert. The owners were very friendly (family resto) and down to earth. I would highly recommend this authentic Afghani restaurant and hope you give it a try! More...

This is a place you would want to bring your family and friends. We called to reserve our party of 12, since it was a weekend and a large group they graciously took our booking. When we arrived they were warm and welcoming. We got the seating we liked so we carried on to settle in and they gave us time to look at the menu but in the mean time they started giving out soup and salad followed by our apps. We ordered indivdual entrees since we liked everything they kept giving us and we were hungry too lol so the main course was great...it was perfect portion buttt some of us who ordered the filet and chicken combo didnt get an entire skewer of meat, it was 3 pieces each. Excellent multi-course lunch for $12 includes house-made soup, hot hot fresh flat bread, a small cup of cucumber tomato olive salad and a large plate of delightfully flavored basmati rice plus your choice of protein. I opted for the chapli which are patties of beef and lamb, lightly grilled, nice. The trio of sauces on the table include an herbed sour cream, a solid medium-spice harissa red sauce and a mint yogurt chutney, I might have eaten too much of them :) just cos they're so yummy.Vegetarian rating: 4 stars for the sabzy (spinach and spices), lubia (beans in tomato sauce), bamia (okra in herbs and spices), borani banjan (eggplant in tomato garlic sauce), and mixed veg in tomato sauce.  If you're a veggie these are definitely your people.Next time I want to get just apps lol they include bholani (fried pastry with potato), hummus, falafel, mantu (beef dumplings) and ashak (veggie dumplings). My fiancé came here with a couple of guys a week ago and absolutely raved about the food. We checked it out together last night for dinner. The decor is very nice...white and light blueish-grey paint with hardwood paneling, nice pictures, and a beautiful faux fireplace on the wall. Seating is tight but luckily no one was seated next to us. Service was very slow which is the only reason I'm knocking it down a star. It took at least 10 minutes to order our drinks. The salad, soup, and naan were tasty along with the 3 sauces (a cilantro based, a red spicy, and a yogurt/dill). My fiancé ordered the chicken kabob with kabuli rice and I ordered the shami kabob (ground beef) with zamarud rice. Both dishes were very flavorful, hot, fresh, and tasty. We also ordered falafel which was extremely good (very green inside, crispy on the outside), especially with the homemade tzatziki sauce. It was $50 and for the quality and even quantity (since you get salad, soup, and naan), is very reasonable. We will be back. More...

Not from the area and looking for something good in town. I've been to lots of places and left feeling meh... So I had never had Afghan food but this place had good reviews so we decided to try it and man and I gals we did. It's amazing, in face some of the best food I've had. The place is small but welcoming and you get a lot of food for the price. The waiter could have been a bit more attentive but overall great place. I will go back when in town. More...

This was a hidden gem discovered by word of mouth from some of my colleagues. The flavors are excellent...Between us we had the Mantu (beef dumplings) which had a different flavor profile than the Asian ones...then we had the Naringe & the Zamarud rice with chapli, shami kabob, chicken kofta and the salmon, as well as the borani banjan (brinjal). The meat dishes were all great but the stars imo were - the Naringe (wat a delicate orange flavor, fantastic!), the banjan (it was literally melting in your mouth) and the chapli!Worth a visit & some more for sure! They could do with some Word-Of-Mouth!! More...

I was a little suspicious with such a high rating then I thought new place most likely the first 20 reviews are from friends and family. Maybe so but  it's a good place, not great but good. I had the eggplant entree, which comes with soup and a nice vegetable salad. The owner came out of the kitchen and apeny some time with me which is a nice touch. Most likely will not go back. I had the eggplant dish and my wife had the lamb shank, both were excellent.  Served with their bread (which is amazing) and salad.  The inside was nice but I recommend making rsvp's as it was packed on a Saturday night.  Friendly service.  Will definitely be back. More...

My husband and I dined here and the food was wonderful! Very fine ingredients, freshly prepared, and so tasty. They bring out a warm, delicious bowl of lentil soup before you even order. The owner is a humble, soft spoken, respectful man and all of the workers are courteous, professional, and happily describe the specials along with the food on the menu. This is the perfect place for a date - very cozy, dimly lit, very inviting, and has beautiful decor. Also a great place to come with a group of friends or family- more for adults though. We will definitely be back! More...

Went there for lunch. Ordered a Kabob. It came with a soup, salad, and naan-like bread. You get to choose one of three rice styles for your Kabob, so there are literally hundreds of combinations you can create! I had the Kabuli with Chapli Kabob. Service was very nice and speedy. Definitely recommend. More...

Let me join most of the other reviewers in lauding this restaurant which has only been open for a month but which is fast becoming a hit in the Somerset county area. The decor & atmosphere are pleasant enough. My only criticism (minor) is that due to the small dining area and table spacing, it would be hard to have an intimate conversation with your partner, especially if you're seated next to loud talkers and laughers. Fortunately for us, most of the other patrons were not too loud.Regarding the food: My mantu appetizer (beef filled dumplings) was superb, Due to mix up in the kitchen, my wife's samsa appetizer (similar to samosa) arrived late. But despite that little glitch, it was worth waiting for as it was hot, mouthwatering and delicious. Our chicken & beef kabob entrees were well prepared & delicious. As far as choice of accompanying rice, my suggestion would be the naringe Palow, a delicate dish made with saffron, candied orange peels, pistachios & almonds. This was by far the best rice/kabob that I've ever had. Our deserts, Firni (non-egg custard flavored with cardamom) and baklava were fresh and not overly sweet. The service was attentive & helpful, and the family seemed to be genuinely nice people who wanted you to enjoy your dining experience. Judging by the consistent flow of happy customers, I would say that this place is and will continue to be successful. More...

Excellent food, friendly staff and modern decor.  The filet mignon was EXCELLENT. I'm already thinking about when I can come back to have it again, it was that good. Their white sauce, bread, salad and soup were anything but the norm - each was unique and fresh and finger licking good. Highly recommend you check it out. More...

We went to Hills of Herat for a birthday celebration for a friend. There were about 25 people, all adults. The appetizers and Mediterranean salad were light and fresh. Hummus and flatbread were warm and fresh...a prelude to the three different rices and shrimp, filet mignonette and chicken kabobs served family style to our group. The meats were tasty and tender. The rices were heavenly!! Service was efficient and attentive.  Loved it! It's a BYOB and beautifully decorated in dark woods and trendy design. A very nice restaurant with the owner, Mustafa, on site and always working to make sure everyone is happy! We were! (Even my finicky husband). More...

Ever since I heard about Hills of Herat, I have been wanting to go there. I was lucky enough to make it there for lunch today with some friends, and it was so so good. The lunch special was great - we each got a kabob and rice, which came with salad, soup, and bread, for $15 each! It was delicious. Where I used to live, there was a great Afghani restaurant that I loved and didn't get to often enough. I am thrilled that this has opened so close to my house. I can't wait to go back for dinner. Welcome to Martinsville, Hills of Herat, and we hope that you are here for a long time! More...

We were greeted like family by family. If you want fresh ingredients, well cooked, with the flavor of Afghanistan, head for the Hills of Herat.Tonight was the soft opening and the service was spot on.  They were attentive, while not hovering, they were knowledgeable about the menu and food service was timely.  Our meal included a creamy delicious soup, a fresh chopped cucumber, tomato, onion salad and Afghan flat bread. Our entrees included a rice option, sliced cucumber and tomato and we had 3 different proteins.. lamb, chicken and filet nicely marinated and tender.  We look forward to stopping back! in More...
