I’ve been at Expression Music in Troy for over two years now and couldn’t be happier. As an older adult student I was a bit apprehensive but my overall experience there has been great. The staff is very professional and knowledgeable, and the guitar instructors I has studied with are awesome. Matt B is an awesome player and he communicates with me very well. His skill level gives me something to strive for. I also think that at 60 years old learning this instrument and the dynamics of music will help keep my mind sharper for years to come. Our kids have experienced the Expressions Music Academy at 2 locations, Novi & Troy. The teachers were and are still all highly motivated and strived to evoke a passion for music. Both, kids and teachers are always excited for the lessons each week. Ever since our kids started they have grown in their music abilities. Expressions Music Academy in Novi welcomes any age to learn a variety of musical instruments in a non intimidating, encouraging, supportive, very fun, and inspiring atmosphere. I have been taking piano lessons with Valerie once a week for about 7 months and have learned so much with her. I enjoy the frequent recital opportunities. Sometimes I've had to arrange a few "make up lessons".... everyone from the informative friendly reception desk area to the college music degree instructors are very professional and understanding. I enjoy chatting with parents in the lobby area catching up on our weeks news as we wait for lessons or for their children to finish a lesson. This is an excellent music school! I started taking violin lessons here about a year ago. I was pretty hesitant as an adult student starting off without any prior experience, but thanks to my awesome instructor (Jessica B) and the Expressions staff, I'm really enjoying learning to play the violin! Expressions Music Academy is great. They came highly recommended from a close friend of ours, and we couldn’t be happier. From my first phone call, I knew this was the place for us . Sarah explained everything and answered all my questions. She invited me to come in for a tour the same day. She walked me through the academy and explained where our children and I would be practicing. She asked all kinds of questions to match us with the right instructor for our skill level and personality.Our daughter and son love Alicia. At their first lesson, she asked them questions to understand them and their musical needs. Our children are very different learners and she adjusts her teaching style to match them perfectly. She updates me on their progress after every lesson with suggestions for practicing at home. She openly shares her personal singing experience and vast musical knowledge openly during every lesson. We have seen our children grow musically and personal over the past 12 months at Expressions. I started with Debi at the same time our children started. I played piano many years ago and wanted to start again. I have an extensive knowledge of music theory, but needed help bringing it into practice. Debi has been perfect for this. She takes the time to explain the theory behind the pieces I am playing. Her ability to select the right music for the skills I am working on is amazing. She always seems to know just how hard to push me. She is not just for the adult learner. I have seen her with younger students as well. She does a great job of changing her approach based on the age and skill level of her students.After 12 months at the Academy, they are not just instructors but friends. If you are looking for information about Expressions Music Academy, PLEASE READ THIS ENTIRE REVIEW ( I know it's long). It contains a lot of vital info. that I would want to know if I was currently searching for a place to take music lessons. Important to note: We have been at EMA for over 2 years. We have 4 children ages: 10, 8 (twins) & 6. All of our kids take lessons at EMA. 2 take piano, 1-guitar, and 1-violin. So I speak with a lot of experience. Simply put, EMA offers an experience you can not find anywhere else and I am going to tell you why. 1. The instructors are wonderful! Highly qualified. Not just great musicians, but excellent TEACHERS!! Each is hired by the owner, Jessica, who is also incredibly professional and has high expectations of all of her staff members. 2. The environment is motivating. My kids LOVE that when they go there they see other kids coming in and out. They see & hear other instruments. There is a "musical energy" in the air, so to speak. With all due respect, it is a completely different vibe than taking lessons in someone's living room.3. They have kid friendly waiting rooms!!! YES! If you have one child taking lessons, your other child(ren) has a kid-friendly place to wait that has books, cards/trivia, music related toys, paper & crayons to color with & probably the most popular...I-pads with musical games on them! They also have kid-sized tables and chairs, so my kids can get their homework done while waiting for their lessons/siblings. For the adults, they have free wi-fi, coffee, tea and water & comfortable seating.4. They have optional RECITAL OPPORTUNITIES!!! I can not express how awesome this is!!! This helps a child develop beyond music. EMA has their own recital hall with a GRAND PIANO on a stage! Very professional & gives your child the opportunity to gain practice & self-confidence when in front of an audience, all while in an intimate, safe & nurturing environment! This has been awesome for our kids! It has helped them to feel more confident when in front of people. This is not just related to music recitals, but this a life-skill they will use forever in school, sports, clubs, work etc.5. I am a speech-pathologist. In this profession, we must learn what motivates a child & utilize this to help them succeed in other areas. I was amazed to see how EMA recognizes that all children are different & are motivated by different things. For some, stickers are all it takes; for others, they are motivated by a long-term award, yet others can not wait for the recitals. They offer a variety of motivational tools/programs, such as a black-belt program, 100-day practice challenges & Grand Award Ceremonies where they are called on stage & presented with a trophy in recognition of their hard work, & summer give-aways which I LOVE! If children are motivated, they will practice more & excel much quicker, which is a natural motivator!6. EMA has a free app. that you can use to schedule/cancel/change appointments etc. Or you can just ask/call someone at the front desk. We have always had a pleasant experience with the front-desk staff. They have always been professional, polite and more than willing to help with any questions we have had. Furthermore, if they did not know the answer to a question, they always got back to me right away.7. Finally, ALL OF THE ABOVE IS INCLUDED IN YOUR MONTHLY PAYMENT! You DO NOT pay extra for recitals, reward ceremonies etc.! Could you go someplace else and pay less for lessons. Yes you could. When searching for a place for our children, my husband and I checked into that as well. However, after considering all options, it was pretty obvious to us. We chose EMA because we ultimately knew we would not get this kind of experience elsewhere. I will leave with this..... the biggest litmus test for us has been how our kids have responded to all of the above. They love EMA & have grown so much musically, it is hard to put into words. I rented Harmony Hall for my piano studio's Spring Recital this June, and it was a wonderful experience! From start to finish, Jessica (the owner of Expressions Music Academy) was helpful and informative. I was able to see the hall in person before booking it, and had a lot of options for when to plan my event. Their price was also reasonable and they set up the room just how I wanted it. The inside is surprisingly professional-looking and I think it truly inspired my students to perform well! The only down side is that the hall is difficult to find from the road, but I let my students know ahead of time where to find it. We had an amazing evening!! Kyle was fantastic and incredibly accommodating. We were looking for a small theater for our musical theater revue style show and this was the perfect spot. The lighting is great. It's an intimate setting with just enough of a stage to really feel like a theater. Our pianist is still raving about the amazing piano available for use. We have been with expressions music academy for 2 years and we love it. My son is excited to go to music class every week. He started in music fun time and had a blast. His teacher was awesome at teaching the kids individually and as a group. My son started to progress faster than the other kids and she was always accommodating to keep his interest. When she felt he was ready we moved to piano. He is doing awesome at piano and his teacher is very nice and encouraging. I also have to say the front desk staff is the best I've ever seen. They are extremely friendly and always take the time to sort out issues with scheduling and finding teachers effectively and fast! I have a special need sister that is also a senior citizen. I have been driving by the Troy location and stopped in to see if they would be willing to take her on as a student for piano. They were the most helpful group of people that also work at the Plymouth-Canton & NOVI location. This was in 2016. I have signed her up again for the 2017 summer.
