I spent some time out in California with Ashley and had an extremely positive experience. I was just starting out as a dog trainer and he was super welcoming about all my questions. While shadowing Ashley it was obvious that his clients were his number one priority. He offered major support after his training program and really explained things in detailed yet simple fashion. He has a no nonsense straight forward approach. We also did some protection work and Ashley took a lot of time to show me safe handling and technics which I still use to this day. I'd love to spend more time with Gold Hill Canine in the future. More...

If you've tried other trainers, if you've YouTube-ed yourself to exhaustion looking for that correct-all secret some e-trainer will give away for some low, low price, heck, even if you're just starting out looking for someone to bring balance back into your home, look no further. Seriously, just give Ashley and Liz a call. That's all it took for me -- the initial phone call.I submitted an inquiry through their website, and within 36 hours I was on the phone with Ashley describing all the worst qualities about my German Shepherd Dog. What sealed the deal was the #everywheredog philosophy. All I wanted was a dog I could take with us anywhere he was allowed and have him NOT go berserk at all his triggers. What made me sign the check was the life-long commitment to me and my dog to maintain this balance through the Everywhere Dog Walks. You want to talk VALUE?!? Real-life, hands-on immediate feed-back every month from Ashley and Liz. All YOU have to do is show up, and keep showing up. So, through a 3 week board and train, Ashley and Liz secured boundaries that my dog understands fully. Through several training sessions with us, they taught us how to enforce boundaries consistently. And, for the rest of his life we have Ashley and Liz to help us maintain a balanced dog. If you walked in my house right now, you'd be met with a GSD who sees you from across the room, sees me greet you, and then goes back to relaxing in a down position.  He wouldn't approach you. He wouldn't bark menacingly at you. All the things that kept us isolated from the world are gone. They'll stay gone because Ashley and Liz gave us the skills we needed, and they continue to support us in our continued efforts to raise an #everywheredogNow, we have the benefit of using this philosophy on all 3 of our dogs. Not just the one we sent to Ashley and Liz. We are a changed family. I will always remember that initial phone call and how I pleaded with Ashley to please just help bring PEACE to my 3 dog, 3 kid, 2 adult household. He did, with Liz's help, of course!! Thank you, thank you!! See you soon!! More...

I sent my 8.5 year old Doberman to Ashley and Liz for being very dog reactivate. She stayed 3 weeks and came home doing very well. Unfortunately, she had a heart condition that came on very quickly and she had to be humanely euthanatized a week after she came home. I called them so upset and Ashley and Liz  came to say goodbye to her at the vet and to also be there for us. They stayed with us for about 2 hours and then followed up for weeks to see how we were. The blessing in all of this was that Myah was calm being around all the animals at a very busy practice. Instead of her having to worry about a dog being around her and having the additional stress, she leaned on what she had learned at their place. When I am ready for another dog, I will be using their puppy program for sure. More...

My dog Lucy is a Doberman Pinscher and my husband and I have taken her to 3 trainers prior to taking her to Ashley and Liz for board and train. Her other trainers weren't bad, she learned a lot and overall, she was a good dog...inside the house. What my husband and I struggled the most with Lucy was her dog reactivity. Walks weren't fun for me because I was always on the lookout for other dogs in case I had to make a quick getaway so Lucy wouldn't bark and lunge. Because she's a Doberman and already looks intimidating, I hated people seeing her look aggressive and out of control. Lucy's previous trainers went over the e-collar tool with my husband and I, but I never felt comfortable using it because I was worried that I was hurting her and I never knew what her levels were. I was only comfortable working in really low levels.Lucy excelled in obedience and she knew what all the commands meant, but what we couldn't train her to do was how to just be calm and stay in place. None of her trainers ever taught her how to relax and everything was about engagement and hyping her up so she'd be excited, which is fine if you want that kind of dog...but we also wanted a calm family dog.I convinced my husband to take Lucy to Ashley and Liz because we weren't able to solve her dog reactivity issue on our own. We drove 2 1/2 hours and she stayed for 3 weeks with them. It went by quickly and on week 2, we were able to see her so they could go over what they've been doing with her and so that we could be comfortable using the e-collar. We were happy to see that she was doing well! She had 2 hot spots on her paws, but it was nothing major and they were treating it while she was there.By the end of the 3rd week, Ashley and Liz drove her back to us and we went for a walk around the neighborhood. I'm so glad they incorporated this into their program because it allowed them to see Lucy in her environment and gave us another opportunity to work with her and the e-collar and have her trainers there in case I had questions. This was what I needed to feel comfortable using the e-collar because Lucy needed a high correction and for the longest time, that was what I struggled with! I knew Lucy's training was a success when I took her for a walk on my own around my parent's neighborhood and what I thought was just going to be a quick walk around turned into a 3 mile walk because she did so well! I took her everywhere and she stayed calm the whole time with the help of the ecollar! As someone already stated in another review, the training works as long as you're willing to continue the work that Ashley and Liz started. Lucy is on her way to becoming the dog that my husband and I knew she could be and I'm so happy that Ashley and Liz were able to finally solve her dog reactivity! No more stressful walks and it's so nice to have a tool that I'm no longer afraid to use. Lucy's training was so successful that we are thinking of sending our other dog as well.If you have any doubts or questions at all, contact them and see for yourself what they're all about. More...

TLDR: You won't find more hardworking, honest, passionate individuals than Ashley & Liz. Ashley & Liz have been an incredible source of support and wisdom, and I'm eternally grateful for their well of knowledge. Through a series of unexpected events, I regained custody of my 6-year-old fur baby, Bodhi, who needed a lot of help getting back to a healthy state of well-being. After extensive research, I found Gold Hill Canine through The Good Dog's website and loved their philosophy. I spoke with Ashley about the issues I was experiencing with Bodhi - severe anxiety, & dog aggression - and his candid, no bullshit vibe gave me the confidence to move forward with their program. Admittedly I have a skewed reality of where dogs land in order of importance (hint: it's at the top) and I now know how important it is to fully understand the responsibility of owning a dog and the boundaries that are necessary to live in harmony with this species. Bodhi spent 3 weeks with Liz & Ashley learning the ropes, but I knew none of the money and time he spent there would amount to anything if I wasn't willing to continue the training and be consistent with the expectations that were set for him. When Liz & Ashley drove Bodhi out to San Francisco for the drop off there was a huge adjustment period, but mostly for me and my new family that Bodhi has never lived with. The ecollar broke on the second day (along with my mental state) and the first thing I did was call Ashley to tell him I was hopeless and ready to give up. He talked me through it and a couple days later we had a fixed ecollar.Throughout all of this Ashley and Liz reassured me that I wasn't crazy, that this wasn't going to be an overnight solution, and that I had to stay strong if I wanted to achieve the positive results I knew we could one day reach. Unfortunately, with my current circumstances, that timeline wasn't going to work, but Ashley walked through all of the options with me to find the best solution. While it was one of the hardest decisions I've ever made, Ashley drove Bodhi 11 hours each way to be reunited with my ex and walked him through all of the training he's learned. Their commitment to humans and their canine companions is unparalleled and I would recommend them to anyone who is even thinking of bringing a dog into their home. Got a new puppy or a dog you love that needs a little more structure? Look no further than Gold Hill Canine. But be prepared to do the work, to show up, and to look in the mirror at your own personal struggles that are getting in the way of your dog being their best. More...

My boyfriend and I have a completely new & improved life because of Ashley & Liz.Our 2 year old pup, Goliath, was very nervous, unpredictable, and reactive. We had been struggling even taking him out to go to the bathroom or walking him around our neighborhood because he would growl, bark, and lunge at any moving thing. After working with a purely positive trainer for the past 7 months, and seeing our pup get worse, we decided to switch course. We had started inquiring with different trainers, talked to about 4, one of which recommended euthanizing our dog. Just as we started losing faith and were extremely discouraged, we were referred to Gold hill Canine. Goliath just got back from his 3 week board and train 3 days ago, and he is a completely different dog, in the best way possible! We have been out to eat with him at 4 restaurants now and we've been able to walk him in places that are so crowded we never thought he could be there alongside us. He has not shown us any of his problem behaviors and he is so much more calm, relaxed, and mellow. We can't thank Ashley and Liz enough, for saving us in the midst of what was the hardest year yet because of our dogs aggression. Not only did they spend hours talking us through the program and listening to our concerns and hopes for Goliath, but they also have been so responsive even after we got him back with any questions we've had. Highly recommend if you want to improve yours and your dog's life!! More...

I came to Gold Hill Canine as a last resort. I had my dog for about 4 years that we got as a rescue. During those four years, he was a nervous, anxious, fearful mess, we couldn't even mow the lawn and him be inside the house without him going into panic mode, barking, shaking pacing etc. Besides the fact he was an overwhelmed bundle of nerves, he was reactive to other dogs. We would have to scope out our walks to make sure we didn't come across any dogs or he'd bark, lunge on the leash and just act like an insane lunatic. Not mention he had pretty much zero leash skills. When people came over to our house and if someone got too loud, clapped or moved to fast he'd shoot up and bark at them. Taking him out in public for anything other than a vet trip, or a walk around our already planned out course wasn't happening. This made us sad since we have another dog we would take places, and it broke our hearts to have leave our problem dog at home because we couldn't trust him. The kicker out of all this was that I was avidly working with him with trainers to try  and help him during this entire four years. Not one, not two but 5 trainers... and a dog behaviorist to top off the list, and it seemed like we got no where with his issues. I invested so much money, and time trying to get my dog into a good mental space. I felt like nothing was working, and I had basically given up on any life for my dog other than the four walls of our house. I tried one last time to help my dog... I contacted Gold Hill Canine. I was so done with all the pure positive only trainers that had failed me time and time again, I took a gamble and tried something different. And that was the BEST decision I have ever made for my dog. We take him to SO many outings and events and his behavior and attitude has changed and improved so much I sometimes forget of the past struggles we've had with them, the tears shed and the hopelessness felt. Gold Hill Canine gave me exactly what I wanted for my dog, to be calmer, happier and enjoy life out in public (and even at home). If you feel like giving up, don't, there is hope with Gold Hill Canine. Or if you're just starting out on the training path, start here, you won't need to go anywhere else and waste all that time and money like I did. It's almost impossible for me to put into words the gratitude I feel towards Gold Hill Canine and what they do for their clients and their dogs. More...

We like most people who have gone to Gold Hill Canine, were at a loss with our dog. He bit my friend, dog parks were impossible for us, walks were now something that we were no longer able to do with our dog. We were at the lowest point in our relationship with our dog and we wanted to help him but we had no idea how. Everything we had tried from previous training experiences were not working. I am so grateful that we called Ashley at Gold Hill Canine. Not only was he easy to talk to but he understood where we were coming from and he didn't pass judgement on us but ensured that we were committed to change our relationship with our dog. When we got our dog back and took him on his first group walk (which are amazing by the way) I couldn't believe that Milo was walking next to other dogs. Milo wasn't lunging and barking at everyone and the best part about it was that I was walking him. Often times with other trainers you will see how your dog walks perfect with them but then they hand you the leash back and your dog goes back to its normal wild self. Which is zero help at all because the trainer isn't always going to be there with you. What I love about Gold Hill Canine is that they help you just as much as they help your dog. They provide you with the tools and knowledge of how to have a calm dog, and what that looks like. I honestly can't say enough good things about Gold Hill Canine. They are not only there for you throughout the training but they are there for you after. They do about 4 group walks a month and other people who have been through the training with their dogs are also there which is really cool. We felt it was worth every penny and we would do it all over again because thanks to Ashley and sweet Liz we can now enjoy a life with our dog that we never thought was possible. This was one of the biggest blessings for us this past year! If you have read this review, DO THE TRAINING. Thank you Ashley & Liz. Eddie I can't say enough great things about the two of you. More...

Never thought this was possible!!! A huge thank you to Ashley and Liz! For those of you who are on the fence about doing this training, do it! You owe it to yourself and to your dog. Their training really does focus on providing a calm environment for your dog, home, reshaping your dogs mind and your's as well. We have a little 16 pound chihuahua and felt silly asking Ashley for help. He didn't pass any judgement on us and reassured us that he could not only train our dog but help us be better dog owners as well. Our little Milo had several different problems. From being yappy, aggressive towards people and dogs on leash, pulling on a leash, lunging at dogs, people, lacking confidence, scared of the world, and dealing with it by biting people(4 bites, 3 family members and 1 friend). Also we were dog owners who couldn't see the fault and role we played in creating an insecure dog. Also he could never be around bigger dogs without barking or trying to bite them. We heard it all, from "That's just little dog behavior" or "How funny, he's a tough guy". The reality is if he was a 100 pound Rottweiler or 90 pound pitbull people would have a total different feeling of Milo. As Ashley simply put it, this isn't acceptable for any dog, and that we needed to see it for what it is. Because Milo wasn't in a good head space. After three weeks of training, Milo was still himself, but you could see his confidence, and calm demeanor. He no longer was insecure, unsure or aggressive. With that being said we also had to take a look and change ourselves. Not everyone has to pet your dog, and you can control your dogs environment.  To this day Milo can now be around other dogs, people, children, and is a pleasure to walk. But it's gonna take work, but damn sure worth it. My last words would be if you are on the fence, take the leap and I assure you, you will not regret it! - Eddie More...

Q&As

Being able to work hand in hand with owners to move them to a better, more confident and relaxed space with their dog. Our simple, results proven training programs are the byproduct of developing very deep, personal connections with many of our clients as they grow and learn with their dogs.

A Northern California native, Ashley developed his passion for working dogs over two decades ago, while becoming a decoy for local law enforcement agencies. That led to a 20 year career as a peace officer, which included time spent in the Air Support Unit as the Chief Tactical Flight Deputy and Rescue Specialist. With the ongoing exposure to the dynamic use of K9's in not only tactical scenarios, but Search and Rescue, Ashley continued to expand his knowledge of working dogs while also attending thousands of hours of training, workshops and conferences around the U.S. He was able to work as a decoy under internationally known trainer Bob Eden, while attending the International K9 Conference.

Ashley founded Gold Hill Canine with the simple motto; 'Better Dogs Today.' The GHK9 experience now includes a comprehensive working dog breeding program, which contributes to their in-depth approach to puppy raising, and a working dog training program designed to develop protection dogs for real world applications, where failure is not feasible. After shadowing with Sean at The Good Dog Los Angeles, Ashley designed GHK9’s True Behavior Rehabilitation™ program to bring that same level of behavior problem-solving to the northern region. With the ability to train both ends of the dog spectrum, from the most severe behavior problems, to the toughest working dogs, GHK9 has a truly unique advantage in the dog training community. This has led us to the creation of the 'EveryWhereDogs' concept. #Everywheredogs is rapidly becoming a big movement within the social media circles as a fun, outgoing philosophy that simply says, "Let's develop a training mindset that allows us to work towards the goal of taking our dogs everywhere and anywhere we choose to go."

We are unique in the dog training industry, in that we focus entirely on the end product, regardless of breed, which is creating a calm dog in real world situations. Everything involved in our EveryWhereDogs training programs is designed around creating a dog that you can actually maintain and live with. We moved away from the classic obedience based training model, that relies heavily on class based repetition of outdated training methods, that typically do not translate well to an in home or real world environment.
We make sure to invest a significant amount of time with you, the owner, to ensure that you understand how to maintain your dogs behavior through simple rules and structure, as well as living and enjoying everyday life with your dog, as you choose. Every single one of our training programs comes with Unlimited for Life access to our EveryWhereDogs training walks, scheduled multiple times each month.
