I attended classes at the Austin School of Film and really enjoyed my experience. The fact that there are classes in the evenings and the weekends allows people with ANY schedule attend. Classes were extremely hands on, helping me to gain extremely applicable skills! Teachers were full of passion, and encouraged the students in my class (including me) to really think in our own personal creative ways. After each class at ASoF, I felt happy with what I had created and amount of knowledge gained. I highly recommend taking classes at ASoF if you are interested in film. I currently make a living working in the film industry, and ASoF really helped me gain confidence in my craft. More...

ASoF is an amazing organization. My son has attended their summer camps for the last two years. Not only does he love the camp and thinks they are a ton of fun, he leaves each camp with a new set of skills and I'm always impressed with what he's learned. This will be the third year my teenagers have participated in summer programs at ASoF. They are given opportunity to learn and practice all aspects of film making and are challenged creatively.
These programs have become an integral part of their summer break, so much so that we are adding in more programs for one of them this year.
It is worth the investment of time and money if you have children who are interested in film making, editing, writing, etc.

I got to take part in QYMP in 2014 and 2015, and I've enjoyed it so much. It's helped me to learn amazing things, make good connections, and really dip my feet into the world of film. I've become not only better at filmmaking, but more confident in my work. They've helped me find out what I'm good at and what needs fine tuning. I've also realized through ASoF that I can do amazing things that I never expected myself to do. I was always too afraid to try certain things, or didn't think I had the talents. I interned at the ASoF a little while back, while I was living in the US before going back home to England. I was completely new to Austin but the ASoF took me on board and I'll never forget the incredible generosity and time those at the ASoF took to make my experience there as valuable as possible. Aside from my own personal experience, their community work is unparalleled, a completely selfless and inspiring organisation. Now - I've made several short films and am about to receive my first TV credit as a Director/Producer and I honestly can say that I wouldn't have been able to do this without the incredible support and confidence given to me by the ASoF at the beginning of my journey as a Filmmaker. 100% recommend their courses and getting involved with helping the organisation in any capacity you can! Austin School of Film is an incredible resource. Their memberships are very affordable and worth every penny. Their faculty is awesome, but even if you just want a space to work and access to an abundance of editing software running on high level hardware and super fast Internet, this is the place. About a year ago I took an intro to After Effects class at Austin School of Film - the class has helped me produce some great animated videos and helped me get over some major learning hurdles.
It added great value to my work at full-time job and was very cost effective.
I didn't really have a lot of time to get full access of the facilities while taking the course (I had a brief membership) but the facilities were really nice and the community there seems very welcoming.

I attended the Youth Summer Film Camp, and I enjoyed it, but it did have some flaws.
Everyone was forced to do everything.
I understand why, lack of people, wanting everyone to learn everything, etc. But the problem with that is, I enjoy editing, and to be honest, that was all I cared about besides maybe coming up with the idea, which by the way, I did. But there were a few things promised that scared me.

Great. So the one thing I'm here for I won't get to do properly, I may be forced to work with other groups (which I did), and I would be forced to act.
I don't hate acting, but I much prefer to do things off camera, or more specifically, with the camera. I vaguely wanted to do filming for the production, but I never got a chance to.
My role was very small, I had no lines or anything. I hardly had a role at all.
Another group called me over to help them but they found someone else so in the end I had waited around doing nothing for 30 minutes.
And as a matter of fact, I DID get to do the editing. All of it. Now this is actually what I had wanted, but it still meant that the camp had a lot of inconsistency to it, which in this case I liked, but what made it worse was when this was happening the head counselor was obsessed with following the curriculum, and yet it didn't work at all.
Other than lack or order, I had a good time, and the end, the movie we produced was not bad.
I will go back next year, and as a matter of fact, I am going to become a member so I have the tools I need (mostly After Effects) to make more movies in the future.
Now I am obviously not the one paying for this camp, and I'm sure you could tell by the fact that I am writing in first person and that this review was very messy, but I don't think I would pay $400 for this camp. It's a good camp, but it's a bit pricy.
