Glacier Brewhouse

I've read through some of the reviews and I feel strongly that rating it poorly due to slow service is unfair. This place is a very busy restaurant and without a reservation you will have a long wait. Plan ahead and make a reservation and you will have a stellar dining experience. I had never ordered anything here that I did not like. All the red meat options are top notch and all the appetizers are excellent. The interior reflects a beautiful woodsy alaskan atmosphere, and only surpassed by the attentive waiters and remarkable dishes. If you are looking for a nice unique restaurant without the pressure to dress black tie, than this is an excellent choice. Note*** The attire is very across the board. Downtown Anchoraagain looking for something new to try and settled on Glacier BrewHouse. Interesting spot in a shopping center. It was a Friday and the place was pretty busy. The host staff were less than enthusiastic but we stuck around for what we were told would be an hour wait. Ended up being a little less of a wait. Once we were seated our waiter was quick to come over and take drink requests and offer specials. I ordered an Amber house brew and the table also had water. For an app the had Seafood Chowder that she said was terrific. For our meal we all ordered the personal  Mozzarella and tomato pizzas. The pizza came out in minimal time, the crust was seasoned and delicious. The cheese melted just right and toppings fresh. The pizza was delicious. This place could easily have been a 5 if not for the host staff, everyone else was beyond professional and eager to make the experience enjoyable. Will be back without a doubt! Update: something that I've learned about what makes a good restaurant... consistency. Everyone can get lucky or get it right every now and then or most of the time, but consistency, that's a whole different game. Glacier BrewHouse has this. I've now been here, Glacier BrewHouse a half dozen times, lunch, dinner, etc., and every time you get the same great service. The staff is always happy, greets you with a smile. The food is always fresh, tasty, and cooked to order. I've tried several items on the menu and each as good or better than the last. Celebrated my fiancé's birthday here. Food was great! We had to try the calamari since all the reviews recommended it. It tasted really good. I would've preferred it to be crunchier but the flavor was definitely up there. It has a good kick to it. The Alaska Nachos was also interesting. I've never really thought of having bleu cheese on my "nachos" but it worked. Also they used potato chips instead of nacho chips, which is better in my opinion.The Alaskan chowder was delicious! I would recommend especially if you like chowders or creamy soups. The starters actually filled me up so by the time I got my fettuccini jambalaya, I could only fit in a few bites. The fettuccini jambalaya has great flavor and definitely got heat to it. My fiancé tried the double-dipped chicken sandwich and he really enjoyed it. Of course, we HAD to have desert. The peanut butter pie was really good and super creamy in the center. The crème brûlée was so addicting!! I could not put my spoon down! Super creamy and delicious! On a family visit to Anchorage, we were downtown when we chose to eat at Glacier Brewhouse. I was in the mood for some good Alaskan beer and the rest of the family was just hungry. Trusting my choice, we made a reservation and enjoyed our evening in a great atmosphere full of excitement and buzz. We were concerned when we first entered about what the level of service was going to be as the host was less then congenial. Our concerns faded quickly as we were quickly greeted by our server Angelina.I started my night off with a flight: Key Lime Wheat (3.75), Hefeweizen (3.0), Raspberry Wheat (3.5), Oatmeal Stout (3.5).  (Ratings are how I rated on Untapped)For appetizers, we ordered Alaskan Nachos and Fried Calamari with Jalapeno Chips. The Alaskan nachos were homemade Yukon potato chips with bar cheese, tomatoes, bacon, chipotle sour cream, and blue cheese crumbles. The flavors all blended together well, and the bar cheese was a thick, flavorful spread. When you had all the components together, it was a delicious, textured bite. It would have been much better if the toppings were not so sparse. Nothing is worse then getting to the end of your nachos and not having anything left, but in this situation, we didn't make it past part of the top layer before we were eating potato chips; they were good but boy we wanted toppings.What saved the day and would make me come back was the Calamari, or as the menu title is "Simply the Best Calamari" Imagine buttermilk battered, thick strips of Calamari with a  jalapeño-lime aioli, with jalapeño chips mixed in the plate. It was the best Calamari I have had in a long time, cooked perfectly and the aioli... oh the aioli. Let's be real, that word has been abused by many restaurants adding something to mayo and calling it an aioli. As I am writing this review my mouth is watering remembering the flavor combinations (I just made a reservation for tonight). Unfortunately, our night came to an abrupt end as we realized that our parking meter expired 30 minutes prior, so we never made it to the main course. We did leave full and satisfied. We will be back (tonight). I decided to come here after seeing the nearly 2000 reviews for this place. I knew it had to be good. I managed to squeeze some room at the bar tonight and was greeted right away. Great service and amazing food. I had the seafood chowder which was terrific and a shrimp salad which was equally great. Pardon my spelling if it's a mess,  I'm in a mild food coma and the euphoria is wonderful.   I started eating here 20 years ago and I hope to eat here 20 years from now.   Started out with the shrimp and grits - it was ethereal.  Great flavor with a perfect blend of shrimp and sausage with the precise level of spice.   I drank some water, but enjoyed every bite.   I finished with the bread pudding and was reminded immediately of the intense pleasure I receive from this dessert.   I used to always get the bread pudding and I'm thrilled I decided to indulge one more time,  it was simply remarkable.  Eat,  enjoy,  indulge - you've earned it! This is the one !!First time in Alaska. We arrived around 8pm on Saturday night. After we sat down for 15 minutes, it was all packed. If you don't want to wait I suggest you to come a little early.We didn't wait too long for the starter. - Calamari was out of this world! Super soft. Sweet. Thin crust. Cook to perfection. I wish they gave a little more sauce cos it too good. Yum!! - Seafood Crostini was so flavorful. Nice crusty bread, creamy Avocado with a kick of basil and some spice. Mixed seafood was a full bite of everything. So fresh.- Our favorite main dish was The Halibut. It was litterally melt in your mouth. We were blown away!! Super fresh. Well seasoned. We can tell that all of the ingredients here was treated with respect and care. Everything on the plate was cooked to perfection. - Service was good. Servers were very nice and friedly. We wait a while for the check because it was very busy. No big deal.The other days we went to try other restaurants too. So good! My boyfriend and I shared the Skillet Jalapeño Cornbread and it was absolutely amazing! He had the special of the night which was steak and shrimp! Not how I eat my steak, but he really loved it and I had a piece of the edges and it was good.I had the Alaska snow crab stuffed roasted cod and it was to die for! Highly recommend!!! More...
