Highlights:-The best ribs I've ever had-Meat platter options allow you to pick a few different meats-Incredible housemade pickles-Crispy brussels sprouts-5 to 6 different BBQ sauces (the mustard and carolina are my favorite)-Rotating specialty sandwiches-Everyone that works there is super cool and friendlyPrices are pretty reasonable for DC and the quality of the food, it's probably the best BBQ I've had in the DC/Baltimore area.Diners beware, they sell out of certain meats faster than others, and sometimes sell out completely -- I was there today (Sunday) and by about 7:30PM they were turning people away at the door because they sold everything -- this should give you a good indication to how popular this place is. Love this spot!!! I'm not even a huge bbq person but federalist pig definitely will have me singing a different tune.  The Brussel sprouts are out of this world!!!  All of their meats are bomb, but I really like their ribs/rib tips.  The turkey is smoked and so juicy.  The portions are huge so you'll absolutely have leftovers.  Also make sure you try the various bbq sauces they set everything off. I'm glad that there's a decent bbq place near my house, even if it is harder for me to catch a time when it's open than it is to set up an appointment for my dentist (Wed-Fri at 5pm; Sat-Sun at 12pm; Closed Mon-Tue)Life hack: Order online and pick it up!  We actually showed up in person and were waiting in a line for 15 mins that moved painfully slow before we decided to place an order online on our cell phone.  After doing so, we waited maybe a total of 4 minutes before our order was ready.  Get the wings!  They were sooo good and definitely a major reason to come back.  The brisket was dry for my taste but it wasn't terrible by any means.  All of the sauces were great that we tried. Can't wait to come back and try their tasty sounding sandwiches! More...

I've been back and had some very good brisket sandwiches. Maybe first time was a fluke. Food seems to have improved a lot.

The only reason I'm not giving 5 stars is because the brisket wasn't as tender as I like and the potato salad wasn't great. Both were pretty dry and the brisket just wasn't very flavorful. Otherwise, the ribs, macaroni, fries, pork belly, and big cheese sandwich were all amazing and I'd come back for them all. The seating is very limited and available first come, first served. Many people tried to get seats before ordering and were gently reminded by staff not to sit until someone in their party ordered. It's a fair system and the staff member on duty was polite about it. It does make the experience a little nerve-wracking, since we weren't sure if we'd get a seat, but it seems to work. More...

Simply put best BBQ in DC. I recommend the brussels sprout side or the smoked cauliflower side.  Thursday night is beef rib night also highly recommended

I am from Mississippi and The ribs are some of the best I have ever had. They are  St. Louis ribs cooked with a garlic black pepper seasoning and were cooked to perfection. I didn't get there till 8:30 and they were sold out of brisket. They also said they serve beef ribs on Thursday, which I can't wait to try. It's a very urban atmosphere with a taste of Texas BBQ. They also have an assortment of about 10 sauces that I did not try because the ribs didn't need them. I highly recommend giving them a try. More...

I love me some delicious barbecue and this place is TOO GOOD! The line is never too long (when I get there early) and goes by quickly. I usually get a platter of different meats and sides. I've tried their wings, ribs, brisket, turkey and I must say the ribs are phenomenal. The sides are delicious! It comes with a Texas toast and pickles, but I also like to get the crispy Brussels sprouts. Those are just deep fried, crunchy balls of goodness that add a texture to the meal. The French fries and the cole slaw are also good options! Come here with friends for some good summertime barbecue! I love tasting all the different sauces they have with my friends and it reminds me why I'm NOT a vegetarian. More...

5/5 totally worth the perfect rating. I'll debunk the things people say against them first:1. People say there's too much seasoning on the fries and other sides, but that just isnt true. If you really want, wipe some of it off. The seasoning is amazing.2. The only free water is from a sink. So what? It's a nice area of DC, be glad they offer it for free. What do you think it is from a soda fountain? That's often even worse. Now for the good. I've had the ribs, fries, brisket, wings, pulled pork, mac and cheese and brusselsprouts. The wings are the absolute best you'll ever have. The ribs weren't necessarily the most tender, but it was just a different style. Super smoky and amazing. The brisket was so flavorful. The fries may have oddly been the best part. Thick cut, crispy, but soft and fluffy inside. They blanch them first clearly, which is the right way to do it. The mac and cheese could've been a little firmer, but the flavor was there. The brusselsprouts were the best my wife had ever had. I think the only part I didn't like is that apparently they run out of things pretty much everyday. I get that it may save costs as they likely don't reheat the next day, but I would assume the same couple things continuously run out. It's not like they're new. Figure out a way to make more you know? Nonetheless, I'll be back everytime i'm in the area. Amazing. More...

From the smoked meats, to the delicious sides, Federalist Pig is a must if you're looking for bbq in DC. I visited on a Friday evening - arriving shortly after opening (open 5pm to 9:30pm). There was already a full house seated, but a only short wait to order at the register. I had the Sampler Platter, which comes with a choice of three meats and two sides. I chose brisket, ribs, and chicken for my meats. Smoked Mac n cheese and garlic green beans were my sides. My order was up after a couple of minutes. Everything was perfectly done and filled smoky flavor - very tasty. The Mac was especially creamy and cheesy. There were a variety of bbq sauces to choose from. The Carolina vinegar and mild bbq sauces were my faves. As I left, the line had grown out the door. Will definitely return on next visit to DC! More...

Definitely lived up to the hype.We went in for a late Sunday lunch, which seems like it's a good time to go, since everything on the menu was still available. The space is small and it was crowded, but we were able to grab a small high-top as another group was leaving. If you live close, I'd suggest being open to ordering for takeout due to the limited seating. As far as the food went, there wasn't a single let down from our order. To share we ordered the Texas Ranger sandwich (brisket base), as well as the 2 step with pork shoulder, jalapeno sausage, mac & cheese and brussel sprouts. The brisket was a standout of the meats, but they were all tender and delicious. I had heard some differing opinions on their sides, but both of ours were great. The mac & cheese is made with Gouda, and you could taste the extra spices they put into it. The brussel sprouts were crispy all the way through (the best way to eat them) and were perfect with the Sticky Garlic sauce. Will definitely be back to try more of the meats and sandwiches. More...

OK, I  will confess that I have spend a lot of time in the south perfecting my taste for BBQ. l will also confess that I have not extensively explored the DMV BBQ scene much but I was convinced that there was no good BBQ here. Then I went to the Federalist Pig[ place your fav expression of joy here]. When I arrived, the line for food was down the street and the smell of BBQ smoke wafted through the air. The line moved amazingly fast and when you entered this fabulous hole in a wall, you could see the moist cuts of meat, smell the flavors. The seating was limited inside but cleared quickly. The atmosphere was family- friendly, loud ( both go well with BBQ) and the food[ restate your fav expression of joy here].The BBQ at the Federalist Pig is among some of the best BBQ I have had. I can't imagine similarly savory  brisket. More...

Barbecue was fire! Federalist Pig is the exact kind of place I want to get my barbecue from. We visited in a cold month which wasn't the best because it's a very small place and it was really busy. Due to fire code, some people had to wait outside. The workers were incredibly friendly, the food was delicious and cooked incredibly well, and the prices weren't too bad for the amount of bbq we got. My friends and I ordered via postmates. My friends loved the BBQ entrees they had.  The smokey macaroni and cheese was Ah-MAZING! It was full of melted gouda. I've never tried anything like it! As a wary and unreasonable Texan, I did a lot of research before going to get barbecue in DC. This place had the stamp of approval from people I trust. And it was pretty good. The sausage was juicy and fresh and the brisket had a lot of flavor, if slightly dry. The mac is NICE- seasoned well and creamy. It has an authentic presentation, and the employees joke around with you when they're making your food. It overcame my initial snobbishness about being from Texas. Would definitely go again. More...

Once a year on a perfect summer day I like to indulge at the federalist pig. Although I don't know much about bbq, the federalist pig has earned its stripes from many bbq connoisseurs. The aesthetic of this quaint shop doesn't adequately prepare you for the gastronomic journey you're about to embark on. There is no wrong choice on their menu! June 2019.Faith restored...this DC restaurant knows good BBQ. But, don't order the sides. Great seasoning on the meats!I had the Two Step: 1/4 chicken (white meat), 3 slices of brisket, coleslaw (later exchanged for green beans), and seasoned fries.*Order ahead to skip the line. **Seating is very limited inside. So unless your dining solo, might want to get your food to go.Service:Top-notch service. Everyone was outgoing and kind. All the employees seemed genuinely happy to be working, despite a line out the door. Very relaxing.Brisket:Juicy and good. Perfectly cooked and seasoned. Simply great and the best I've had in DC. My favorite bite was dipping it in the Sticky Garlic sauce. Chicken:This was my favorite. The seasoning on the chicken is awesome! Plus, the chicken was juicy. No sauce was necessary, but it paired well with all of them.Seasoned Fries:I liked these, but I can see where someone might not. The fries were perfectly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside. However, the seasoning was generous with a strong punch-you-in-the-face flavor. Put differently, no additional salt needed.Coleslaw:0/10. I'm not sure if there was a problem with prep or what, but this was like eating mayo out of the jar with raw cabbage sprinkles on top. I recommend the kitchen add vinegar, half n' half, salt, pepper, and sugar at a minimum to help develop this zero-effort side dish into something tolerable. Sorry, y'all...but this was simply bad. On the plus "side" I asked to exchange the coleslaw for some green beans and the kitchen happily agreed. Green Beans:2/10. Similar to the coleslaw problem, this was like biting into a clove of cooked garlic with a green bean aftertaste. If you're a super-fan of garlic, then you might enjoy this side. WAY too overpowering for me.Sauces:Hot-Spicy and vinegary. Good.Mild-Most similar to something store bought, only better. Zingy and good.Ranch-I dunno what makes it green, but it's good.Sticky Garlic-My favorite. I would buy bottles of this for my house.*The star of BBQ is the meat, not the sides. However, when served with meat this good, the sides became noticeably unpleasant distractions. This was a tough call, but I think 4/5 is fair. I will definitely visit again though. More...

Every Sunday, after the gym, my husband and me walked home via Adams Morgan, joined the line running out of Federalist Pig's door, and ordered our usual: a Sampler Platter with spare ribs, sausage, and pork belly, with broccoli slaw and green beans (or fried brussels sprouts). This place is THAT GOOD! And the price is even better.I have always been skeptical about good BBQ in DC. I am particularly about the smokiness, the savory-ness, and fatty-ness, and the right amount of cartilage I get with the ribs. Federalist Pig gets it ALL right. It's self-serving, efficient, and everyone seems to love what you do. On the weekend and Short ribs special day (thursday), make sure to get here EARLY - they do run out of meat quickly and often, and you will be left in anguish.I am writing this review from Nashville, and having been sampling some of the finest BBQ of this city, I miss Federalist Pig even more. I look forward to coming home and ordering my usual platter, and to the bounciness of their jalapenos cheddar sausage when I take a bite. Gosh there is really no place like FedPig. More...

Federalist Pig is hands down my favorite BBQ joint in DC. The food is always amazing and the owner is super friendly. Most of the food is good, classic BBQ but they do put fun twists on their sandwiches and sauces (try the Texas Ranger sandwich and the blue cheese sauce - you won't regret it).

Good bbq in DC? This was unexpected... Thank goodness Highroad Hostel recommended this place to eat! It's easy to find, especially with the faded flag painted on the wall. Seating is limited, but there's outdoor and indoor seating. I'm no bbq expert considering I'm from California, but I do know that this place was the SPOT! All of the workers here were really kind and made some really great recommendations. I got the Carolina On My Mind sandwich which had pulled pork, coleslaw, and pork rinds (I think). This was recommended to me by one of the workers. He said that the pulled pork was really good that morning and I agree! It was juicy and not overwhelmingly smoky. I tried most of their bbq sauces and the mild and hot were my favorite. I also ordered a side of coleslaw and mac and cheese. The coleslaw was okay, I could do without it. The mac and cheese was flavorful and delicious. When I'm back in DC, I will definitely revisit this joint! More...

So wish we had Federalist Pig in Birmingham.  My mouth is watering just thinking about the place.Out of the 7 or 8 restaurants we ate at on our recent trip to DC, this one stood out.  My wife and I had the Pitmaster Special - 4 meats, 3 sides - and everything was pretty much amazing.  Smoked turkey, ribs, pork belly, and wings - all delicious.  Wings were slightly crispy on the outside and juicy inside.  Ribs were tender, but not overcooked.  Pork belly and turkey were spot-on.  Mac & cheese was our favorite side, but brussel sprouts and green beans were good as well.  Also, can't forget the variety of sauces - each one better than the last.Short walk from the Columbia Heights metro station.  We went early on a Sunday evening (perfect meal after catching a Nats game).  Place was not too crowded, but the line started backing up not long after we arrived.  Greeter was helpful and food was out fast.  They were out of brisket and the chicken, but that's all.If you like barbecue, I can't recommend this place enough.  If I'm ever in the area, I'll go out of my way to eat here again. Visiting from western U.S. where BBQ can be a religious experience. Federalist Pig might well be the next cathedral.  Wife and I shared the sampler platter with chicken, brisket and jalapeño cheddar sausage. The meats were perfectly cooked with a delicious marinade. Great selection of sauces including a mustard sauce that was interesting.  Sides were also very good.  Brussel sprouts (which I normally detest, miracle of miracles) and mac and cheese. We spent our Sunday afternoon trekking through Columbia Heights to find Federalist Pig, a low-key barbecue place with meats smoked in-house. I ordered the Sampler Platter ($20), which came with a choice of three different meats and two sides. I chose the Beef Brisket, Pork Belly, and Pork Spare Ribs for the meats, and Smoked Cheddar Macaroni & Cheese and Red Bliss Potato Salad for the sides. The plate also came with a side of toast and pickles. Although the ribs were slightly on the drier side, the pork belly and beef brisket was incredibly tender. I particularly enjoyed the melt-in-your-mouth quality of the fatty pork belly, which was probably not very healthy but that's ok. The potato salad was also good, but the mac and cheese was slightly disappointing, as the sauce was loose and gritty rather than smooth and creamy. However, given the overall positive experience we had, and because of the extremely reasonable asking price, Federalist Pig still gets 5 stars. More...

If you love BBQ, you'll love the Federalist Pig! This place may be a tourist trap, but it definitely lives up to the hype. First, we were greeted at the door by an enthusiastic employee who offered to explain menu items to us. We were fortunate that when we came on a busy Friday night, none of the menu items had run out yet, and there were a few seats available in the small restaurant.Based on Yelp recommendations, we ordered a sampler with pork belly, brisket, ribs, and rib tips, along with sides of mac & cheese, brussel sprouts, and fries. The pork belly was literally melt-in-your-mouth and was probably my favorite meat, though of course the brisket and ribs were stellar as well. Many previous reviewers had raved about the brussel sprouts, and I thought they were unique but too salty/over-seasoned. On the tables were a variety of different sauces to complement the BBQ, though the meat is flavorful enough that the sauces aren't a necessity. My favorite sauces were the sticky garlic and the mild BBQ.We walked out of the restaurant feeling like we were going to have a heart attack any minute, but it was worth it. More...

When I went to federalist pig the restaurant made me feel like I was transported to a BBQ place in the south I liked the atmosphere, in spite of it being crowded with customers. All the staff are friendly and have excellent customer service. The actual food is great! Very flavorful and was hot. I got a lot of food and was able to save some left overs for later. It heated up well and tasted the same as when I first had it. I also love their sauces. More...

This place is the bomb!!! My personal fave is the Jalapeño cheese Sausage and Crispy Brussels Sprouts. Make sure to come before the ran out their meat. We came on a Saturday night around 7PM and it was packed. But eventually it calmed down. The staff are very nice and will try their best to accommodate you if you want to stay in to eat. They have very limited space to dine in inside. I LOVE FEDERALIST PIG. I live right by here so my move is to pick up and bring it home to avoid trying to find a seat. The meat here, ALL the meat here is just amazing and tender and delicious. I think their sides are awesome too and the fact that they're "open until they run out" is an incentive to get there for lunch and not dinner because they do actually run out of stuff.Standouts: brisket, brussel sprouts, ribs More...

After hearing and reading rave reviews, I gambled and placed a large order (feeding at most 20 people) for a girls night in. I won! In fact, Federalist Pig for the win!! The menu is clear cut and full of goodness. I opted for the chopped brisket sliders, wings, crispy brussel sprouts, and mac & cheese. Although I didn't have 20 people, my greedy gal pals CRUSHED the food. The biggest hit was those spouts. I had one serving and must admit, they were darn good. Seasoned (just a little too seasoned for me, but I don't generally use salt so that probably explains my reaction). The mac & cheese is thick and delicious. The brisket and wings, also top notch!  I'm not a condiment eater so food without sauces or any extra seasoning must be good - and this place hit it out of the park. I worked with the caterer, Racheal, and she was AWESOME! I completed the form online after business hours so it was surprised to receive an email a short while later with a contract and follow-up questions.  Racheal and I communicated via email throughout the evening - again well after business hours - which was very cool. The contract includes space for CC payment. I was uncomfortable providing that via form/email so Racheal accommodated my zanniness. She gave me her number and allowed me to call with my info. Then (yes, there's more!), the day before my event, I sent Racheal a text asking about utensils. In return, she advised that they could provide a number of things including plates, serving utensils; eating utensils; and hand wipes (for $1 per person). I opted for eating utensils and hand wipes.I chose to have the food delivered - always a plus. Racheal and I negotiated on the delivery time (the food must leave the restaurant no later than 5p) and once again, I was pleased. Because the food was delivered hours earlier, Rachael suggested that they bring the sliders disassembled as to not end up with soggy bread. Genius!I will absolutely, without a doubt, order again! Hands down best bbq I have ever had. Friendly service and though crowded, the staff have an organized seating system to take the stress off you. The brisket was so tender, juicy and just to die for. The pork ribs had a delicious crusting of seasoning, while keeping the meat tender. Also the chicken wings had an amazing marinade/seasoning. French fries and Brussels sprouts were crispy and also well seasoned. Basically nothing you can order will be bland or dry, and it is worth any wait in the cold to eat here! More...

This is a hole in the wall place where there is limited seating. The staff here are wonderful. I shared the four meats special. The brisket is wonderful and the pork ribs were ok. The chicken wings were seasoned with something spectacular and those were really good. The pork belly was super tasty because it tasted like the fat of a bacon strip but I felt gross eating it and probably should not get that again. They season the green beans with something with a little kick and it was ok. The mac and cheese was pretty good and the coleslaw just tasted like regular cole slaw. This place is nice and I would probably just get take out. More...

I initially tried this place after being a bit disappointed by the Rocklands near my place, as I found their meat fairly dry and bland, with the quantity a little lacking. Federalist Pig made it such that I would never consider going to Rocklands again if I had the choice. God damn this place has good bbq. Across 3 orders, I've had the opportunity to try the beef brisket, rib tips, and pork belly from the main meats, and mac & cheese, chipotle greens, potato salad, fries, and Brussels sprouts from the sides. First thing I'll say is that this place is called the Federalist PIG for a reason. Their swine is their specialty. The rib tips are generally very flavorful and juicy (although my 3rd time with them, they were a bit dry), and their pork belly left me in tears. It was so juicy, tender, and fatty, I was losing my mind. The pieces are also cut nice and thick so you can get a good taste of that dry rub (I found sauces unnecessary for the pork). The beef brisket is a bit of a wild card. It's not the most tender of things, but if you get some fat on it, it helps round out the flavor and texture. I've had it once with some decent pillow on it and once without, and it's nothing special without it. Regardless, you'll probably want some sauce with this one. If you're really hankering for some beef, I won't stop you from ordering the brisket (it's certainly not BAD), but there are just...bigger, tastier fish to fry here.Onto the sides. None were bad, but again there are standouts. The fries were the most vanilla of the bunch; they were seasoned with some tasty dry rub, but...it was a little overdone. I'm not afraid to put extra salt on my fries if I think they're bland and idc about spiking my blood pressure, but this was a bit much. I was drinking a lot of water to offset the amount of seasoning on them, but if that's your thing, go for it. They were also...extremely crispy. I got all my food via ubereats, and this stuff stayed crunchy over 6 hours later. Potato salad was interesting, very tangy and vinegary, probably due to their addition of the pickles and red onions. Fairly light, so if you don't want something heavy, this can hit the spot. Mac and cheese was very cheesy, and creamy, with some pepperorns in there to add a bit of a kick. If you like mac and cheese, I'd recommend trying this. Chipotle greens were amazing, very flavorful with a nice bit of spice, creates a good mouthful with meat and bread. And the Brussels sprouts...gee. They look like they've had the every-living shit charred out of them, but they taste so good. Crispy and flaky, with a good smoky taste to complement the dry rub. Slightly bitter of course, but it goes well with the char and the meats. Would highly recommend this at least once, and that's coming from someone who normally dislikes Brussels sprouts. The sauces, in my opinion, are kind of nice, but unnecessary if you go for the rib tips or pork belly unless you're on the Guy Fieri grind and are really hankering for some full-on flavortown. I tried the North Carolina, sticky garlic, and mustard sauces. Carolina sauce is extremely vinegary, so go for it if that's your thing, but if you're less acclimated to those tastes, I'd forgo it. sticky garlic is...sticky, sweet, and garlicky. Decent with the brisket, and has some uses elsewhere. I personally liked the mustard sauce the most, if felt the most versatile, but the sticky garlic is probably my favorite one in terms of uniqueness. The 2.50 sauce addons are probably worth it if you have a group or have other uses for the sauce but I found that they masked the flavors of the rub a bit too much for the pork.Prices might seem a bit expensive for people not used to American city dining, but this is well worth your money. You get what you paid for and more. Don't let the initially petite-looking sizes for the meat fool you; the slices are thick and rich, and together with sides, you'll be filled up very easily. I'm no pixie when it comes to eating, you'll see me eating a large calzone followed by a double bacon cheeseburger or ordering burritos the length of my forearm when i'm feeling peckish. But this place...has bested me all three times I've ordered from it. I have yet to ever complete the 2 meat sampler platter with sides in a single sitting, which is a huge pity because it's best enjoyed fresh. So be mindful of the portions and don't get something larger unless you...really know you can finish it.If you like meat, if you like bbq, or if you just wonder what the hype about bbq is about, I'd highly recommend this establishment. Think of it this way; if I'm raving about it this much after having ordered it via ubereats, where the toast is soggy and the meat's gone lukewarm by the time it arrives, but I'm still praising it like this...they must be doing something right, you know? Definitely gonna have to visit this place in-person one day when time allows. Strong 4.5/5, bumped up to a 5 because I can't do decimals on this site. More...

Don't come here at all this is my secret BBQ place in Adams Morgan. Oh, darn, the cat is out of the bag. Stay away. I've not wanted to write a review because I don't want you to come to my 20 step away hideaway where everyone knows my name. I think I was coming here every week when it first came in the neighborhood and I  really got to know the staff. It's so bad how much they know you because when you are missing, they call you out and they even tell you the last time you did come in. However it's all good, they love me and I always try and bring new people to check out the amazing, incredible, delicious barbecue place. You know that song "Nothing Compares to You?" Well,   nothing compares to Federalists pig in the area. Sorry, I am a BBQ snob. I know Dallas isn't the only place that sells award winning BBQ, but they have enough places that give me cred. The half-dozen times I've been to Dallas,  I ate barbecue at every meal. I kid you not. It's the first thing that I do when I land and the last thing I eat when I depart. So back to my review, the best part of Federalist Pig is that everything is delicious and nothing disappoints. So, if you want me to pick and choose what you should get, just come back and try everything. Oh and did I tell you about the sauces that they have? My favorite is the sweet garlic and that North Carolina one. Also on Thursdays stay away so I can get my beef rib special. You people are greedy I tell you, but I can't blame you and I commend you for your commitment in beating me to FP. For the vegetarians out there you will also fall in love with this place! So, get your butt over there and try all the sides and their special veggie sandwiches that look amazing. That's all I'm going to say about this place.  Please excuse me while I eat all the barbecue this weekend when it snows and you are too lazy to trek through the snow to get here. The End. More...

Solid BBQ food in DC! I don't call myself a BBQ expert in any way but I know when I eat good food, it deserves some recognition. Four of us dropped by on a weekend for some early lunch. My party got brisket, sausage, turkey but I opted for the fried chicken sandwich with a side of seasoned fries. The fries were a tad disappointing as I was hoping for shoestring fries , these were more like steak fries similar to the ones at Red Robin. My burger on the other hand was so good!! The pickles were spicy, the chicken was juicy, the green sauce added the perfect kick to my sandwich. Although it was a little messy, it was delicious regardless. Seating is limited but I wouldn't take the food to go. Stick it out and grab a table just so you can enjoy your BBQ as soon as its ready at the counter. More...

Pretty darn tasty. A little pricey for what you get, in my opinion, but mostly worth it. We ordered a ton of takeout: smoked wings, a turkey sandwich, green beans, mac and cheese, brussels sprouts, and fries. The best items, in my opinion, were the wings, sprouts, and fries. Mac was pretty good too. I really liked the pickled veg that comes with the meats. My favorite sauces were the sticky garlic and the vinegary Carolina sauce. Best barbecue I have ever had hands down. Their brussel sprouts are the best, I always have to get them. They also have rotating specials so there is always something new to try. On my most recent visit I ordered the platter for two. My boyfriend and I could barely finish it all - so much delicious food! The pork belly was our favorite meat we ordered (rib tips, chicken, brisket were the others). We of course ordered the brussel sprouts. The Mac n cheese had a kick! The potatoes were a good round out to the meal and the toast is garlic toast (nice surprise). This place has a variety of different sauces you can put on your meal, we had fun trying them all. Our favorite was the sticky garlic. I was so sad when I moved to Chicago - this place was across the street from my apartment so I went quite often when they opened. Phenomenal barbecue.  Seating crowded, no atmosphere.  But the BBQ rules.  The sampler platter ($20) has three meats and two sides.  It is enough for two people or one very hungry person.  There is a green colored sauce that is a great complement to their brussel sprouts.  If you are lucky to live nearby, takeout is the way to go.  If not (in my case), prepare to be elbow to elbow enjoying the wonderful tastes here.  Come early, as they will sell out. Great BBQ in DC! I loved the food, service, and overall atmosphere. The prices are also pretty reasonable for how generous the portions are. I split a sampler platter for two with my boyfriend. We got a choice of 4 meats and 3 sides. It was hard to decide which meats, but we ended getting the chicken wings, ribs, brisket, and pork belly. The wings were the biggest surprise - they were so tender and filled with nice smokiness. I would honestly order a pound of these alone next time. The ribs and pork belly were good, the pork belly was super fatty and cut through like soft butter. The brisket was a bit disappointing because it lacked flavor, even though it was pretty tender. For the sides, we got Brussels sprouts, Mac and cheese, and green beans. I'm not a big Mac and cheese person but this mac blew me away. Brussels sprouts were super crisp, I would get again. Overall, I'm definitely coming back next time I'm raving some good bbq. More...

The Ribs were well seasoned and could be eaten without any sauce at all.   The Brisket was fat and tender. The Brussel Sprouts has a slightly sweet, yet Smokey crispness with only a hint of the bitter aftertaste (as to be expected with Brussel Sprouts). Now to the sauce.  There are 6 sauce options, including: Mild BBQ, Hot BBQ, Mustard BBQ Carolina Vinegar, Sticky Garlic, and Ranch.  All of the sauces are self explanatory, except for the Sticky Garlic. It is a thick molasses based sauce with garlic infused throughout.  The garlic is in every drop. It creates an interesting taste, and I imagine this sauce takes the place of Honey BBQ. Rob, the man in charge told me that the sticky garlic sauce is their own creation.  I mixed the Mild BBQ and Sticky Garlic for use on my meat.  Overall I enjoyed my experience, and I will return. This place isn't the easiest to find from the street: there's not much signage that points it out. But behind the nondescript door lies some truly excellent BBQ. My girlfriend and I came and ordered the postmaster special for two.Meats: pork belly, wings, ribs, brisketSides: Mac n cheese, green beans, Brussel sproutsFor $28, you definitely get what you pay for. My favorite item was the pork belly. So fatty and tender and flavorful. The dry rub made the smoked chicken wings a highlight too. The spare ribs were solid but a couple of them were little fattier than I'd like. The brisket could have been seasoned more thoroughly but the texture was spot on. I definitely recommend using the hot BBQ and the mustard BBQ sauces on the brisket and ribs. All the sides were delicious too. We both left very full and impressed with the overall quality and portion size of the food. Not even the side dishes, which I always figure are hit or miss at BBQ joints, disappointed. One of the better BBQ spots in DC for sure. I love their chicken wings because of the dry rub on it that is highlighted by the granules of sugar crusting the skin and sweetening up the smokiness. The ribs that day were a little dry but their array of sauces bring the sweet, sour, smoky, and sexy. The meats and sides are great but what really knocks it out of the park for me is the soundtrack. Cooking up some marvelous 90's hip-hop vibes to get your mouth waterin'. And when you see the cooks mouthing 2Pac bars then you know you're right at home. I would never trust a chef that wasn't a music lover. Doesn't matter what genre just so long as they have the love. This place is so worth it!! Great food. I had the Big Cheese sandwich. It was awesome! Their fries are great too. They have all types of different BBQ sauces to try there. Apparently a fan favorite is the ribs. I will definitely try those next time. Coming from a BBQ city (Memphis), this place was a very good find. Will be back soon! More...

I do not eat pork so I cannot speak on their main selling point but I was drawn to this place because of their chicken wings. Someone brought an order of their chicken wings to a party I was at and I was immediately hooked and knew I had to try them.I came here on a Saturday morning, around 12ish and the line was so long. It was all the way outside the door. That is a good sign though, so I did not mind. The line moved pretty fast, so it was not a big deal.I ordered the wings along with macaroni and cheese and brussels sprouts. It was all so good. This food is not the healthiest though, so I don't see myself coming back frequently. However, it's a good spot to check out when counting calories is not on the agenda. More...

I went to the Federalist Pig for dinner on a Saturday night. The restaurant is a small hole in the wall with limited seating inside. We order the sampler, which came with 4 meats and 3 small sides. For our meats, we got smoked chicken wings, rib tips, brisket and pork. All of the meats besides FP wings were good but not great IMO. The wings were their standout meat  (out of the 4 meats I tried). Saying, Federalist Pig wings were delicious is an understatement! In my opinion, FP wings were some of the best smoked wings I've ever eaten in DMV (DC- Maryland-Virginia). Our 3 sides were Mac n cheese, potato salad, and garlic chipotle green beans. All 3 sides were good. There are a variety of BBQ sauces for customers. The garlic sauce was my  personal favorite. Service was fast and attentive. Street parking can be hit and miss (busy area of DC). Overall,I enjoyed my meal here. I give Federalist Pig a 3.5 rating rounded up to a 4 because of their wings. The other reviews already testify to how great the food is. Logistically, this is definitely a place best visited:- for takeout, and stay if there happens to be room - earlier in the evening (they frequently run out of meat, buns, etc. before the night is out)- after putting in an online order (lines are looooooong). - if you don't mind rubbing shoulders with people and navigating a bit of a crowdIf you put in an online order, your meal will be waiting on a hook for you when you arrive. The guy who finishes and hands out the food at the back will help you locate it. Sauces are behind that, with a sink to clean up afterwards :) More...

I absolutely love this place. It is truly a gem amidst the pretentious DC restaurant scene. Not only is the barbecue fantastic, the restaurant is unassuming with a real feeling of authenticity (if that makes any sense). Not fancy, not frou-frou, just good food. And I also really appreciate many of the small things that they do right. You want water?  There are cups and a sink at the back you can help yourself and don't have to pay for bottled water. The tables are all communal high tops with, get this, coat hooks on the legs!  Oh, and the music is great too. Definitely a winner in my book! More...

Had high expectations of this place and Federalist Pig delivered. I went in alone for a quick meal on a warmer fall day. With the thousands of positive reviews, I'm glad you have found this. The short: Go and try it for yourself. Affordable, approachable, and not pretentious. I highly recommend the pork belly. The quality is the same quality I would use at home for Asian pork recipes: 60-70% meat and the rest fat. It's the worst when you bite into a mouthful of pork belly and gag when you realize it's all fat. And plus, there's a whole chalk board dedicated to sandwiches that I can't wait to try. More...

Great food and amazing and friendly staff! Awesome bbq with great portions! I got the two step which is two meats and two sides. I ordered the brisket, spare ribs, fries, and coleslaw. The ribs were fall of the bone delicious and the brisket was tender and flavorful. The fries were crispy and light and the coleslaw was just okay. Only thing I would skip was the coleslaw but other than that amazing overall! Definitely would recommend! More...

Holy $&@!I am absolutely blown away by how good my meal was. I had a 1/2 pound of brisket with Brussels sprouts and mac and cheese for sides. My only regret was not having gotten there early enough for ribs or a seat in the small place...walking back home smelling the goodness really tried my patience. The Brussels were crispy and the mac was rich and the perfect size. As the main attraction, the brisket was truly world class, the gold standard, grade A++...just incredibly tasty. It was perfectly tender with an awesome, flavorful crust, and went really well with their BBQ sauce. I'm struggling to think of any I have ever had in my life that came close. The staff seemed very friendly as well. Do go early, however. I showed up at 6 pm on a Saturday and did not wait long to order, but by the time I walked out with my food, the line was practically to the street. More...

My dreams have been BBQ to perfection...AGAIN!I was a dedicated fan of DCity Smokehouse (formerly on N. Cap and Florida Ave NW; Now on 2nd St. and Florida Ave NW). I would go at least every other week, get teased by the staff, and see Rob Sonderman's smiling face doing what he does best - smoking the most flavorful BBQ DC has to offer. Then a fire, change in ownership, and new location later my favorite BBQ place was no longer the same. My heart hurt and my stomach longed even more for the flavors I had fallen in love with. Now enter Federalist Pig. Oh-My-Lanta, this gives me everything I was missing and then some. I could write about the food, but I don't want to start sobbing tears of happiness while typing these words in public. Instead, I'm going to highlight the last time I cried about this food.A drunken rainy night in the summer of 2018, I subconsciously got stuck in AdMo and knew it was time. I entered the sliding corrugated steel siding and lone-and-behold, Rob was at the register, big grin across his face as if he was exactly where he wanted to be. Overwhelmed with happiness, I held back tears and got a platter to be able to try a bunch of stuff (really, what was not sold out) and asked what my sauce options were. Not to my surprise, the space is much bigger than DC and added critical details that just make it that much better. Separate sauce bottles you can bring back to your table (game changer) now grace the counter of a hand sink to wipe off all that grease and gooey goodness after your meal. I received my beautiful platter of meat, took my first bite, and had a single tear slide down my cheek. Things happen for a reason, and Federalist Pig is a bigger better version of DCity Smokehouse. Lawd this is Good!!!! Haven't had yummy bbq is so long. This food brings me back to a bbq trip I took in the South a few years back. We came on a Saturday for lunch a little after opening at 12 PM. Best time because following, there was a hugeee line. This place is very casual cafeteria style where you pick any available table throw away your own food.Food: A  The bf and I ordered a Rib and Chicken ($15) which comes with two sides and I chose Chipotle Garlic Green Beans and Crispy Brussel Sprouts. Also, a Texas Ranger sandwich ($12.50). The ribs was sooo tender just like the chicken. I loved the ribs more because I don't have it enough in my life.. The green beans were ok BUT THEIR BRUSSEL SPROUTS. OMG. Crispy, flaky, acidicy goodness. The brisket sandwich was melt in your mouth, fatty deliciousness. Love their various Southern sauces as well. Make your own combo to add to your meat. For drinks, we ordered a dry rosé cider and a Southern Tier Brewing Blonde Ale. I was too damn full to finish my cider LOL.Total damage: $50~If I am in DC again, I would love to come back. More...

Update: After my review the restaurant contacted me personally in an effort to rectify the situation. I appreciate their obvious dedication to serving their customers well. Despite this one unfortunate instance, still a great restaurant with great BBQ. Always been a big fan of this place and recommended it to out of towners but my experience tonight has made me question whether or not I'll continue to do that. I ordered food to go and immediately realized I had orderd brisket instead of pork on a sandwich. I tried to change the order but the online ordering service doesn't allow you to modify the order, cancel the order, or contact the restaurant. I resorted to trying to call them on my own but they don't provide a phone number anywhere. Finally I attempted to change the order in person since the restaurant is around the corner from my house but when I arrived it was already made and the guy told me the only option was to order an additional sandwich because "it was already on bread and they couldn't reuse the meat." And that they didn't offer a phone number because they're too busy. It was a Wednesday night, there wasn't even a line to order. Disappointed, this used to be one of my favorite spots. More...

I thought I knew all the perfect bbq spots in the district. My pantry has ten bottles of sweet-leak-your-fingers sauce at any given time, I rub my wings gently and softly hours before home grilling and my calendar has the annual back of the alley whole pig roast event in ALL CAPS. Of course I've heard about Federalist Pig a while back, just somehow I never mentally locked this location on my next to visit list. Shame on me!Because this is by far the best meat I had in the district! We casually happened upon the place and decided to order 3 meats sample platter. We then went to the counter twice more to a cheerful smile of the roasting crew. The same crew at one moment opened their smoker - and the entire place was submerged in an amazing smokey aromatic cloud of goodness. I bet they did it on purpose to solidify my newly found addiction. The meat was divine, the staff was funny, quirky and delightful to watch. This is truly a place that should be on everyone'a must to list.(Sorry kiddos, no pictures in this review as I could not hold myself) More...

BBQ is something that can be eaten on any kind of day, but especially a rainy lazy Sunday. Having a real craving for BBQ, I decided to check this place out. This is probably one of the best, if not the best BBQ spots in DC. It may not be like something you'd find in Texas, but for DC it's truly great. I got the sampler to get a bit of variety: brisket, pork belly, and rib tips. The brisket was pretty lean but wasn't dry as some places have it, though the bark didn't seem to impart as much of a flavor as I was expecting. However, both the pork belly and rib tips were fantastic. They both had a melt-in-your-mouth consistency, and the rib tips especially were particularly well seasoned, with an appropriate amount of salt and spices. The cartilage was holding its shape well but slid off the bone easily, a sign of really great BBQ.The sides were good too. The cole slaw was pretty average, but the Brussels sprouts were really good, having a dark char and packing a decent amount of heat. The in-house pickles and pickled onions, a characteristic of Texas BBQ, added a nice amount of crunch and acidity to balance the smoky flavors of the meats. The location itself is a little narrow, but they have sidewalk seating our front. On busier days calling ahead for an order might be a good idea as it seems like they can sell out of some things quickly. Will definitely come again when I'm in the area. More...

Underwhelmed. BBQ sauce sucked. I had three different sauces. Yet they all tasted the same. Bring your own BBQ sauce. I got the chicken/ rib combo with mac n cheese (greasy, but decent) and soulless potato salad. The chicken was good. I found the ribs tender, but they could have gone a little longer. And it was definitely over salted. Paired with the BBQ sauce, every bite was salt lick. The Texas toast was nicely toasted. The atmosphere was nice and cozy.   UPDATE: I've recently been back and the brisket was delicious. And the sweet garlic aside is great. More...

We ate here on a quick trip to the area, all the way from Texas. Being from where we are from, we have the privilege to experience some of the best bbq the country has to offer, and we have done our best to try all of the nationally ranked bbq spots Texas has to offer.

I’ve got to say, Federalist Pig is doing it right. The ribs were phenomenal, the pork belly was definitely something to check out. The Brussel sprouts and Mac and cheese were on point.

My only average tasting meat was the brisket. It looked like we got a few slices of the flat, and while tender, had very little smoke penetration and almost no bark.

Other than that, it was a killer meal. Keep up the good work.

Hands down, best BBQ in the DMV area.  You'll need to run a 10K after coming here, but it's worth every calorie.  The place is easy to miss since the tin american flag shingling on the outside blends in with the surrounding brick buildings.  There's a neon pig above the door as an identifier and the mural inside adds to the charm.  Back in the day, my S.O. and I frequented DC smokehouse on florida ave.  When it closed we were devastated... so when we saw that the pitmaster Rob was opening a new place, we rushed over to adams morgan.  The brisket is some of the best I've ever had, including the stuff I've tried in the south.  The guys behind the counter are always friendly, even when it's hot and crowded.  Get here early since they do sell out. Hot damn! This DC BBQ is LEGIT! Make sure you come early to not only get seating but also to have the full menu on offer. We arrived at 7ish on a Friday, and they were already out of chicken (not wings) and ribs/tips. We also had no line but when we left around 7:45pm, the line was out the door and starting to wrap around-it was crazy! Staff was friendly and seemed to be enjoying themselves rapping to the soundtrack and having conversations and what not. The cashier was super nice too as was the guy that gave us menus and checked on us later. Portions are very large: we chose a 3 meat, 2 side meal ($20) and then I added an additional side and it was the perfect amount of food for two people. Meats: brisket, pork shoulder, and chicken wings. Sides: smoked cheddar mac and cheese, chipotle garlic green beans, and seasoned fries. The meal came with housemade pickles and pickled onions and two slices of toasted bread too.Brisket: great char, relatively lean but moist and juicy. Nice smoke flavor.Pork shoulder: a little fatty but still delicious. Very tender.Chicken wings: I'm not all about wings but these were fantastic! I loved the seasoning and char, very tender and juicy. The sauces I tried: mild BBQ (ok), hot BBQ (truly spicy-loved this with the fries!), sticky garlic (really good with the wings), carolina vinegar (This is always my favorite style sauce and this version was good-very tangy), and Mustard (hands down my favorite! I used this on the pork and brisket-perfectly balanced, tangy, very flavorful!)Seasoned fries: seriously, do not sleep on this side! I was not expecting much but LOVED the seasoning (slightly spicy, sorta peppery). These were crisp and hot too.Chipotle garlic green beans: spicy, garlicky-great choice to feel (semi, maybe just a little bit) healthySmoked cheddar mac and cheese: cheesy, ooey, gooey, and clearly had been baked or smoked on top-really delicious!I have officially located my absolute favorite BBQ in DC and plan on returning many, many times in the future! The food came out quick and the employees were really cool.  We ordered the sampler platter. 3 meats and 2 sides. We got rib tips, brisket, and chicken with Mac and cheese and fries. There are lots of sauces to choose from but I am very sensitive to spicy things so I stuck to milk BBQ and ranch. This was PLENTY of food, almost too much for 2 people! We could've stuck to the Two-step and been fine. My favorite was the chicken. The ribs were also good but I'm just not a huge rib person. The fries were my favorite because of the awesome seasoning. They had been waiting in line and the little girl (10-11) got over heated. While the mother called an ambulance, the staff got water, wet towels, and did everything they could to make the little girl and her mother comfortable including suggesting that she lie down on a bench in a restaurant with very little seating to make sure that she was ok. BBQ was HEAVENLY. We can for the weekend and after reading the reviews we gave it a shot. AND IT WAS NOT DISAPPOINTING. Definitely will come back here when we're in the area!

Not only the best bbq I've ever had, bar hands down the best FOOD I've had anywhere. Love the wings! The dry rub is the best!

Overall it's a game of Hit or Miss. Well this one I was a miss on the brisket, the chicken was fantastic. The pork belly was just okay not as crisp as I would have liked it, but the rib tips were pretty good. This is more of a memphis-style barbecue place than anything else as they use a lot of rubs. The barbecue beans were more spicy than sweet but my wife really enjoy them. I started to give the place three stars but figured I better give it a 4-star because my wife really did like the chicken and we actually went back and got more. Bone appetit More...

The food here was excellent! It's a tight space and gets a little jammed. But the staff are friendly and courteous and the brisket was to die for!

Stopped while in town in business. The place was really busy. Most folks seemed to be getting to go as the seating is pretty limited. I ended up getting the brisket, pork belly, green beans and, of course, the brussel sprouts. Everything was really good, not outstanding but really good. More...

Blessing for my tastebuds and a curse for my waist line! I live a block away and I love this little hole in the wall. Everything I've had has been delish (and I've tried most things). The sauces are excellent and the seasoned fries are divine. I have often ordered the meat selection for four, pretending I have a family at home, and eaten the whole thing myself over a weekend More...

I have been looking forward to trying this place for awhile so why not go on a blustery April Saturday I thought. Seeing the outdoor seating warmed my heart, but seeing the string of lights sway violently in the air did not make me want to sit outside. That said, it was nice and cozy (read: jam packed, shoulder to shoulder) inside. A line of about half a dozen had formed by the time I arrived for lunch and to the point where we all crowded in the few feet between the register and the front door, which would usher in cold air each time it opened. On the left hand side is a line of seating options, some tables, some long benches where you sit facing the wall. I lucked out that by the time I placed my order for pitmaster special for two (brisket, pork belly, pork spare ribs, and chicken with smoked cheddar mac and cheese and crispy brussel sprouts), there were two side by side seats facing the wall and near the condiments and sink. The barbeque meats were worth the wait; they had a wonderfully smoky, fall off the bone (when appropriate) texture that was also surprisingly fulfilling. When I picked up the order, I didn't think it would be enough for two people, but it was. The mac and cheese gave a nice unctuous contrast to the meats. I didn't care for the brussel sprouts though. I found them too crisp (aka burnt). I also got to try two desserts: an oreo cream pie and a banana cream pie, both served in circular containers and both super delicious. For the initial appearance, it doesn't look like much, but the food was satisfying and diverse in taste and complexity and the place is unpretentious with chill folks working. More...

Order the feed the fam and treat yoself!!! It's essentially a large platter of all the different bbq meats they offer. The real winner though if you must know is the brisket! Perfect ratio of lean and fatty meat with a delicious smokey flavor. The sauces offer unique flavors like vinaigrette and a cilantro ranch, just the perfect touch. The extra buttery toast is unresistable-wrap it around some of the juicy pulled pork and make yourself a pulled pork sandwich, mmmmmm. Who would've known DC would have such delicious bbq, definitely a must try in DC! It's a very lively spot with very friendly staff and outdoor seats. The only down side was they were out of whole chickens that day so I felt a bit ripped off by getting the feed the fam platter. They did substitute with chicken wings and drums instead but it just wasn't the same as tasty as they  were, I'm sure the whole chicken is a lot better. More...

It was quite a unique spot, the food was succulent. I wife and I got the sampler. The sampler comes with three choices to meat, and two sides. We get the pork spareribs, chicken wings and the brisket. For the signs we got green beans, mac & cheese, and french fries. Comes with complementary butter toast. The pork spareribs would melt off the bone. The brisket was smoked to perfection.  Don't even bother getting the chicken wings, definitely pick the other meats. They offer a variety of sauces to go with the meats, Mild barbecue, garlic sauce, jalapeño ranch. More...

Have been wanting to come here for a while now (how could you not want to try a restaurant with that name?), however they are only open Wed-Sun so it took a bit more planning.  Finally got here on a Thursday right after 5 when it opened to beat the crowd.  It's a small place with a long narrow interior, a cartoonish mural of a pig filling one entire wall, 3 rectangular high tables for 6 on one side and the ordering counter and kitchen on the other.  The day's specials written on a piece of packing paper hung by the the door.  Outdoor patio seating with two white picnic tables and benches.  Restaurant rather incognito, the corrugated iron facade looking like a shack in the rural south, with only a cute red neon sign -"BBQ" written inside the outline of a pig - above the narrow door, and a blackboard with opening hours propped up on the sidewalk.  But the place's hard to miss - all you have to do is follow that fragrant smell of BBQ.  We ordered pork rib tips and garlic beans, brisket and fries and they were ready quickly.  The rib tips are a super good deal, $6.5 for half pound, with a small beans side at $2.5, there are few other places where you can get a meat packed dinner for only $9.  It's quality casual food at its best.  Both the pork rib tips and brisket are delicious, although I'd have preferred the pork to be a bit more tender (for most people I'm sure it's tender enough). The thick cut fries tasty and crispy, and the garlic beans especially flavorful and spicy.  There are a bunch of sauces on the table, you should try them all, the flavors each distinct and all absolutely finger licking yummy.  No bar but a small selection of canned beer is available for $5-$7. I've been wanting to try this place for awhile so now that I'm moving out of DC in a couple weeks I finally made it here. It's probably good for my waistline that I didn't make it here earlier though. I came on a Friday night around 7pm so it was prime dinner time and the line was long. I decided to get take out as I wasn't sure if there would be seats or not. Do be aware they sell out of things. By the time I got there they were already sold out of chicken and one of the guys working there told me he was excited because they would definitely be sold out of everything by 9pm and he could go home early. Moral of the story: don't get there too late. I ordered the Two Step so that I could try a few different things and it comes with two meats and two sides. I got the brisket and pork belly for the meats and brussel sprouts and mac and cheese for the sides. I would highly recommend all of them. The meat was perfectly cooked and delicious. They have a lot of sauces available. I tried several, but my favorite was the spicy one since I like spicy. This was a lot of food for one person so I made two meals out it. Highly recommend checking this place out! More...

OK, so I really love this place and try to come here at least once a week, or once every few weeks. The food is fantastic and the menu is always changing. The last time I came in, I ordered the fixer, which is pulled pork, pimento cheese, pork rinds, onions on a potato bun.I really liked this sandwich and I don't really consider myself a big sandwich person either. My favorite item on their menu is not really barbecue but the brussel sprouts. I kid you not when I say these are the greatest brussel sprouts to ever grace this good planet. They are crispy, cooked perfectly and they give you a gigantic AF portion every time for a fantastic price.I tell everyone about this place. This place is great bbq.  I have been meaning to come here for a while, but each time I found myself walking by I was either on my way somewhere already, or they were out out bbq for the day.  Finally stopped in for lunch.I have read about how solid the place is, but I often discount rave reviews in DC, which is still a middling place for food and drink.  DC is often all about hype, but this place lives up big time.  I had a two meat combo: ribs, brisket, crispy brussel sprouts and Mac and cheese.  Dining companion had a smoked sausage sandwich topped with pulled pork and slaw.  Everything was solid.  Ribs were downright perfect.  Charred, tender and flavorful.  The sandwich was a decadent delight, with the sausage having great snap and the pork packed with smoky flavor. Sides were strong,.with the sprouts being so crispy and salty, a nice fiber stand in.  Brisket was very, very good.  I often find brisket to be a disappointment.  Theirs was a solid option, but the ribs were the highlight. I won't repeat all the descriptions of the locale, they are accurate.  Down home type of place.  I was going to order a half slab but order the 3 meat platter (and get 3 rib orders) was about the same price and came with two sides.  I ordered all ribs, crispy Brussels sprouts and mac and cheese.  The dry cooked ribs were tender, meaty and tasty (is this Texas style?).  They had sauces to top the meat.  The mac and cheese was unremarkable, but not so bad as to downgrade the restaurant's rating.  On the other hand the Brussels sprouts were AMAZING.  I tried a companion's coleslaw and do not care for vinegary slaw.  The fries looked good.  If I lived in DC they would see me again. I had been wanting to try this place for a while and finally went with some out of town friends. There isn't a sign outside but you can find the place by looking for a building front made out of tin or some material very similar. There are two communal picnic tables outside and a few more inside. I love ribs and really only wanted to try the ribs so I got the half rack with a side of Brussel sprouts. The others I were with got the Two Step which is a quarter pound each of 2 of their daily smoked meats plus 2 small sides. I'd say overall the food was pretty good. We had just got back from Asheville and Memphis and this food was pretty comparable. I would definitely come back and try the brisket since everyone seemed to really enjoy that. More...

Wow.  I talked my kids into biking from silver spring through rock creek with the prize at the end being lunch here.  The ride was long, the kids complained, my 11 year scowled at me and muttered 'this BETTER be worth it' as we walked with our bikes the last 1/4 mike.  Short line and food came out quickly.  One bite and both kids were gleaming 'TOTALLY worth it!'   The sandwiches were phenomenal and so were the fries.  Didn't try other sides.  I had a sandwich from the special board - Texas wave - that had pork shoulder, brisket and sausage (I know right).  The meats were amazing but it was the unbelievable homemade pickles that gave it flavor profile that truly sent it over the top.  Best BBQ sandwich I've had anywhere ever.  Guys running the place were very friendly and honestly looked like they were having a blast putting out great food that and seeing everyone enjoying it. As a southerner who has lived in dc for ten years, I had pretty much given up on getting even mediocre barbeque. Federalist Pig, though, is the real deal. Great mix of vinegar, spice, and on some of the sandwiches, cracklins I didn't realize I ever needed :) ribs are perfectly seasoned. Chipotle green beans are perfectly soft with a nice spicy kick. Even dessert nailed it--banana pudding was full of bananas, not too sweet, and blessedly devoid of whipped cream and boxed pudding. I've found my BBQ in dc. Never thought it would happen. I'm very picky about my BBQ. I haven't found a place I like yet. Everything in DC seems to be all about North Carolina BBQ. I'm not a fan. The BBQ here though was the closest to what I'm use to. The meats were so tender and juicy! I got the rib and chicken platter with Mac n cheese and the baked beans. Honesty I would pass on the sides next time. The Mac n cheese was better than I thought but the baked beans weren't good to me. Wish I would have tried the green beans instead. My boyfriend got the 3 meat platter with turkey, chicken wings, and brisset.  I only tried the turkey and brisset which were just as good as my chicken and ribs. He also got mac n cheese and the brussel sprouts. The sprouts were excellent! Oh we also got some banana pudding for dessert. It was meh. The. BBQ. Sauces. I tried the hot and sticky garlic (I think that's right). Loved them both. I would definitely come back for the meats. And the customer service was awesome. From the time we walked into the door until we left we felt welcomed. I highly recommend checking The Federalist Pig out. More...

FIRST-RATE BBQ EXPERIENCE - Thoroughly enjoyed an Easter lunch during our first visit here,... Pulled pork, brisket, rib tips, and lamb were all moist and flavorful; excellent in terms of quality of cuts, preparation and presentation. Sides were delicious also; Green Beans had a nice “kick” and the Mac ‘n Cheese a mild smoky quality which enhanced - but didn’t overwhelm - the cheesy flavor. Keep in mind - the sides are distinctly unique with obvious consideration and experience to refine,... (If you’re looking for ordinary, “safe” versions of classic sides, stick with a chain restaurant.) Available seating is rare, but, based on the continual stream of customers, there will never be sufficient quantity to satisfy demand, so be prepared to “carry out”. The entire staff, from owner Rob to the preparers and including the “floor-walker” who continually checked at tables and interacted with incoming patrons, were all friendly, responsive, and entirely hospitable. (Sitting near the counter, we couldn’t help noticing the friendly manner with which Rob and his staff continually welcomed and responded to all customers.) If you’re ever in the Mount Pleasant area of DC and have an urge for a great bbq meal, I strongly encourage a visit to this comfortable but lively place, just off the “beaten path” of 16th Street, NW. (Thanks, nice going, and best wishes, Rob Sonderman!) More...

Hands down the best BBQ in the DC area. (IMO, the previous holder of that title was Rolling Rib in Upper Marlboro.) Both the Big Cheese and the Carolina on My Mind are great twists on traditional BBQ. I like the pork BBQ best (personal bias) though the beef brisket is also quite good -- moist and flavorful. My daughter found this spot while Yelping places for spring break during her English class. (Daddy's girl!) We decided to head there for dinner after a long day of walking all over the National Mall. We. Were. Starving. When we walked in the door, I immediately announced to the entire staff at the counter that a boy from Memphis had arrived and they better have some serious BBQ game. They laughed and promptly told me they were out of ribs?! (-1 Star) but they did have pulled pork. Cool. We started with smoked wings cooked with dry rub and they were very tasty. Reminded me of the wings at Central BBQ back in Memphis. We all got the pulled pork sandwiches with slaw, fries, Mac and cheese, etc. they had four sauces to choose from and I went hot and spicy. The food was legit and the owner came by several times to see what I thought. Super cool people working there! When we put in the order and they asked for my name I said, "Ric Flair" and all the guys in the kitchen yelled "WOOOOOOO!"  Then one of the guys and I busted out the "Rolex.....wearing" routine. Let's go! After being abysmally disappointed in the last BBQ joint I went to, Federalist Pig faced the hype and knocked it out of the park. I've eaten here twice now and each time it was a great experience. It is a laid back/lunch counter atmosphere that while not necessarily the most comfortable experience, will give you what you expect from DC era favorites ( a la Ben's chili bowl), great food and a friendly atmosphere. In my trips I've had the pork belly, the brisket, the ribs, and chicken wings as well as the spicy green beans, mac n cheese, fries, and the banana pudding. The green beans are awesome but have a helluva kick to them, if you're not someone who likes spice, dont even bother. They have a strong garlic and chili flavor that you can tell have been steeped together in the pot for hours. Mac n cheese, pretty typical, nothing outstanding. Fries are good, crispy and thicker, great way to balance out some of the spice and grease from the meats. Was gifted banana pudding on my birthday by the staff and it was great, loved the little hunks of banana and the pudding were a great way to finish dinner. The pork belly is ok, it was really fatty but didn't have a super distinct flavor . Wings were dry rub and well done, not too crispy and plenty meaty. Brisket was good, not greasy, not too fatty and lots of flavor. The ribs though. It's hard to explain, but whenever I think of Federalist pig, I just imagine those delicious, perfectly cooked ribs. They're not over done to the point where they're messy, the meat comes off in layers and flavor is embedded to the bone. They were so good, I always try to get some to go. Solidly reasonable prices too (9 dollars for the sandwich, 3 for fries). Wish they had fountain sodas but oh well. There's a sink by the condiments area which is kind of neat! Makes sense for BBQ. There isn't a ton of seating at this place, just a few tables along the wall, so keep that in mind. We came at six on a very cold Friday but it got a lot busier as the night wore on. It seemed like most people were ordering carry out, though. The staff here are very nice. The person taking my order was really upbeat, and the guy manning the front of the house checked in on us multiple times. He was really attentive to a blind woman who was sitting at the next table, which she seemed to appreciate and it was very nice to see. I'll be back! More...

Really small and quaint barbecue spot with minimal outdoor seating. Close proximity to other major landmarks so it's very convenient to stop in for lunch in the midst of your daily activities. The ribs were really tender and juicy along with a housemade sauce with just the right amount of kick. The potato salad was ok but had a heavy mustard taste to it which isn't my favorite. The macaroni and cheese was nothing to write home about.I washed it down with a crisp blood orange brew. Not too bad. More...

Everything from the food to the service are amazing. Ordered the $28 pitmaster special (four meats + two sides) to split with two friends, and it was plenty of food to go around for the three of us. We got the pork shoulder, brisket (so tender and falling apart), ribs (literally fall off the bone tender and flavorful), and the chicken wings (great dry fried texture). My favorites were the brisket and ribs. The Brussels sprouts were a really generous portion, while the mac and cheese was fine but unremarkable. Even though it's a counter service place there was one staff member who was making the rounds of the communal tables, making sure everyone was ok, happily answering questions, and bringing extra pickles. The hot BBQ sauce packed a surprising punch - definitely give it a try if you like some kick. Love the sink by the cutlery - no need to wait for the bathroom line to wash your hands! It does get pretty busy in the small space, but tables turned pretty quickly. More...

This place is insanely good. It is by far the best bbq I have had north of Texas. The macaroni and cheese is amazing and the vibe is super fun.

I am not a huge meat eater and LOVE this place.  The wings are amazing with the dry rub and they are actually meaty.  Sides are great. Only downside is ordering delivery.  If they run out of something, they will just swap it with whatever meat they have still available and you don't get a choice. More...

Staff was very friendly. My girlfriend and I split the Sampler Platter. Everything was really good. We'll definitely be returning, although maybe when it gets warmer so that we can sit outside (there's not a lot of seating inside, and it's been fairly busy almost every time that we've walked by).

I was very excited to see this place open because Adams Morgan and surrounding neighborhoods are seriously short on good barbecue. This place didn't disappoint. Amazing meats, excellent service, and a solid southern barbecue vibe. My favorite thing about this place is that they have banana pudding. Check it out! More...

YUMMMMMMMM! I've read about how good the food is here so many times, and last night I finally got to try some for myself! There were six of us at a friends' place that was nearly across the street. We looked at the menu online and realized that the "Feed the Fam" platter would be a perfect amount of food and a great way for the four of us newbies to try a bunch of meats and sides. We'd planned to order online per our friends' advice, but it wasn't working, which they said was probably because the shop had run out of stuff for the week, so two from our group braves the cold to go place our order and bring dinner back. Service was so fast that they were back within 10 minutes! Here's what we got based on what was left: pulled pork, ribs, and brisket; Texas toast; and, mac & cheese, roasted cauliflower, crispy Brussels sprouts, and seasoned fries for sides. What I loved: Top for me were the cauliflower (a special that week), the Brussels sprouts, and the pulled pork. The ribs and the seasoned fries were also very good, though the fries arrived cold, suggesting to me that they weren't really hot when they left the shop. What disappointed me: The toast was limp and too dry. The brisket was just 'meh', especially compared to the other meats we got. The mac & cheese was a bit bland and the texture of the sauce was too grainy. But my biggest issue was the size of the sides that came with our platter, which were way too small for something that's supposed to feed 4-5 people. They were basically individual portions, it looked like, instead of portions to share. We each could only get like 3 bites of a given side so that everyone got some. Disappointments aside, I'll def be back and encourage everyone to get themselves some of this delicious que! More...

I've been here about 4 times, and have not been disappointed even once. Well once- because there was a looong line, and our group made an executive decision to try another BBQ place- and that was the disappointment.Service- friendly, funny staff- cool peeps!! Also- it's self-service.Food- try everything!!! :D okay really though- my favourites - rib tips, and their Brussel sprouts. The Brussel sprouts are UH-MAZING!! I strongly suggest going with a group of atleast 3 or more, and ordering family style so you can really try everything. They have a variety of delicious sauces, which can make for quite a delicious combination. They also have a delicious cider (it has an orange-ish taste), I wish I could remember the name- but that was yum! I have lived in the DC area for 29 years and only recently discovered this place. I drive all over the nation and every where I get the chance I stop and try their BBQ this is by far the best BBQ in DC Metro area! They had a good vibe of an urban smoke house that automatically lets you know you made the right choice when you walk in the door, The service was great we were greeted warmly by Mike and handed a menu as he explained his favorites and gave recommendations. We had the pulled pork, brisket, ribs and rib tips all of which was served hot with a caramelized crust of mouthwatering goodness indicative of a properly smoked meat. I could not be happier with this place. They even have a good beer selection. Try it, you will love it. More...

Best BBQ joint in DC! Special shoutout to Willie who greeted my friend and me as soon as we entered and helped us pick out our order, as it was our first time. We split the Pitmaster For Two and got one additional side of mac n cheese. The rib tips and the brisket were my favorite pieces in the combo plate. It is more than enough for two people, but maybe not enough for three really hungry people. I like how you can choose two different sides and you get to try a variety of their best meats! Their rib tips are perfectly charred and well-seasoned. Their brisket is flavorful and juicy. We ordered the Brussel sprouts and the classic slaw as our two sides. Perfect pairings with our meat. They also have a wide variety of dipping sauces to choose from. I liked their homemade ranch- it kind of tasted like a chimmichurri with the green bits in it. Excellent service and friendly environment. More...
