We had no plans on where to eat and just happened to come across this place while online. The interior was small, but comfortable. The food was amazing. Our first experience with Cuban food was in Miami so the bar was set pretty high. We thought we would have food to bring home for later, but it was too good to stop eating. Definitely did not disappoint. More...

Some of the best food I’ve had since moving to Charleston. I just couldn’t believe I paid only 12 bucks for my plate! I would have paid more for the quality and quantity I received. It was that good. Even the humble rice and beans side is bursting with flavor. I’m taking all of my family and friends who come to visit me here.Another added bonus is they were very kind and worked around my husbands gluten allergy and the food came out quick and hot. Don’t forget to try their hot sauce too! More...

We went because they had potato dumplings on the menu. It really is a hole in the wall, but totally worth it. 2 of our kids are picky, but they had the chicken taco and pulled pork sandwich and ate everything. Wife had the potato dumplings and loved it. Would absolutely go back. Was one of the best meals we had in Charleston and the most reasonable cost. More...

Ordered delivery to our office on this very rainy day. It was my first experience with Cuban Gypsy Pantry and it was a very satisfying one. I ordered the Pernil plate based on a coworker's recommendation and it arrived loaded with flavor (and just loaded in general, the thing must have weighed 3 pounds!). A large portion of pork served with saffron rice, black beans and plantains, the meal tasted delicious and thoroughly satisfied my hunger. We shared the Green Fries at the insistence of a coworker and I am surely glad we obliged. Beautifully seasoned and smothered, they were definitely a stand out. The amazing green sauce on both the Pernil and Green Fries is definitely something that I will be back for. Can't wait to try the empanadas next! More...

Authentic food in this hole in the wall off Calhoun street is fantastic. With this being my first visit I stuck with the simple Cuban sandwich and fries. Not only was it great but it was big.  Cool vibe, clean place for a small dive and very friendly young staff.  Everyone in the place seemed pleased with their food. I'll surely be back to get a bit more creative with the menu.  The only thing that just didn't seem like it fit was the Coors can of beer on the register (between the two local crafthat was playing the game "What doesn't belong" with me. Wow! Delicious food in a cosy unpretentious corner shop on Calhoun St. We almost walked by it without noticing it but were drawn in because we had seen the name in very complimentary reviews and vlogs. We had some the tastiest black bean soup ($4.50) and fish tacos ($6) we've tried, and the rest of the menu options looked appealing as well. The portions are large and the prices are really low for the area and quality. Just last night we ended up spending 5 times this amount for a dinner that wasn't half as good. I think this place is a must-try ... At least once if you are just visiting Charleston. More...

Having grown up in South Florida I've known for a long time that the Charleston area needed a good Cuban Restaurant. Well WELCOME Cuban Gypsy Pantry to the 843! Visited the North Charleston location and glad we did. Food was fresh and tasty. Service was spot on the Front End Manager kept a keen eye on the tables making sure nothing was lacking. He made sure as did the waitresses that everything was good and checked to see if we needed anything. A good size portion for the money, and the tre leches cake was made fresh on order I could see it being made from our table. Will definitely go back. I hope that the area will support this establishment so they'll stay around for a long time. More...

I saw this place advertised on the news and originally wanted to stop in and try the new North Charleston location but they were closed on Sunday. So, I headed to the location downtown. As a starter I tried the chicken empanada. The inner portion was bland and the outer portion was fried perfectly. I ordered the pineapple coconut smoothie as my drink and it was delicious. My entree was the coconut chicken. Another fabulous dish full of flavor. The plantain were sweet and satisfying. Overall I enjoyed my meal and it's worth a stop in for Cuban cuisine with a twist! I also appreciated hearing Celia Cruz! More...

Dios mio !  The cuisine here takes me back to the islands of Cuba and Puerto Rico - flippin' yummy. I will put it out there that I have had better cuban sandwiches in Miami but this one is good. The ropa vieja, fried plantains, carne asada, and their own creation of green fries were all super good but i will give the warning that the portions are huge so sharing is suggested. Oh, i'd be remiss if I did not mention the real fruit drinks which were explosive in real flavors and their coffee is all made in authentic espresso pots (perculating not drip) and is better than what that big chain out there serves. There restaurant does not have a lot of seating so be aware of this if you are planning a visit during busy periods. More...

Service was quick and attentive, despite the lunch rush.I ordered the carne asada tacos which came with rice, beans, and plantains. Everything was very tasty - the steak in the tacos was tender, plump chunks, well-flavored, topped with sautéed onions and cilantro. The rice and beans were also spiced/flavored in some way that went beyond basic s and p, and the sweet plantains hit the spot (I went in mostly because I had a plantain craving). I got a homemade mango popsicle to go as well. It wasn't like the Mexican paleta style I had been expecting. Basically a cup of frozen mango juice with a few bits of mango and a popsicle stick in it. But it was refreshing/made a good palette cleanser after lunch. More...

Grabbed lunch at Cuban Gypsy Pantry by way of recommendation. Though the restaurant was small and lunch menu fairly limited, the grub was exactly what I needed. I went with the vegetarian plate, a delicious mix of sauteed veggies; beans; rice; plantains; and corn arepitas. Can't speak to the sammiches but I saw many and they all looked delicious. Not sure how many Cuban spots exist in Charleston or how violently confrontational locals get about their choice of bread but can't imagine this is a bad option if you're craving a Cuban. I couldn't stop eating them. I don't know what's all inside of the green sauce but it is good. The sandwich was a nice size. The bread was soft and the meat tasted good by itself. When my husband recommended we try this little cuban restaurant out, I wasn't thrilled since it's not what I had in mind for a celebratory weekend. HOWEVER, I'm so incredibly glad we went. I told every person saw after that about their amazing food and plan to come back the next time we come into town. I've wanted to try a Cuban sandwich since I saw the movie chef because they looked so good. But every one I'd seen at other restaurants made me pass. I read the reviews and saw how good it was supposed to be and man, they were right. It was incredibly full of flavor, gorgeous texture, perfect combination of flavors, and the buttery pressed bread was my version of sandwich heaven. I ate half at the restaurant, then an hour later pulled the rest out of the mino fridge and finished it off. It's been a week and I'm still thinking about how good it was.Hubs had the plantain boat. Super full of flavor and he loved it. I had a bit of his rice and was blown away at the flavors. Rice tends to be fairly bland, but nope. Here it was exactly how you'd dream rice at a place like this should taste like. Full of flavors of all kinds, perfectly combined to make your mouth go wow!!Cute interior. Cool they had glass soda bottles in a little fridge. And the food. Definitely go, you will not regret it. More...
