I did not expect Christo to be so down to earth but he was. I came here for myself and my son in August and I still like my cut and so does my teenage son. I have never had my hair not be frizzy in a humid climate and his product made my hair look good in humidity. I did like that he trained you how to do your own hair and had you practice a little bit which helped. The product really works better for me than the diva curl product. I feel like Christo's product really changed the texture of my hair to make it more smooth and less frizzy. I wish I could come more often but I live out of state and it is the most I have ever spent on a haircut. Nevertheless I really enjoyed the whole experience. For reference I have also had my haircut in LA and I thing Christo's cut might last longer as it grows out. More...

What can I say about Christo other than he changed my life? Before coming, my curly hair was a source of frustration. But Christo cut my hair so it would look amazing CURLY — the way it’s supposed to be. But the biggest game changer is the bio-softening treatment. Idk what sorcery it is, but it gets rid of all those little baby hairs at the front of my head that stick straight up (you know what I mean)! I get it done every six months or so and don’t have to worry about slathering my baby hairs with gel. Everyone who works at the salon is a delight. And being here is an oasis from the city. If you’re a curly girl get yourself here ASAP & learn to love your curls! More...

I rarely write reviews, but I had to after my amazing experience here. First of all, the receptionist was so sweet and kind, even when i was scheduling my appointment, giving me multiple appointment options and explaining the different prices to me.I had my hair cut by Alice who listened intently as I described my hair concerns and wants. She explained ways I can improve my hair and get the desired look I want without pushing the salon's products on me. She was very knowledgeable about curly hair and gave me a fantastic cut. When she put me under the hair dryer to dry, she checked on me every 5 minutes. When everything was done, my hair looked fantastic! And for the first time in about 10 years, I walked out of the salon loving my hair. I wound up buying some products because I just loved how my hair looked so much. On top of it all, she sent me a handwritten note explaining my hair "prescription". Before Alice, I would immediately tie my frizzy hair back after a cut and run home to wash and style it myself! I tried all of the expensive curly girl salons and paid stupid amounts of money for bad cuts and have products forced on me. No more! Now that I found Christo's, and specifically Alice, I won't have to suffer a terrible cut/style again! If you have curly hair you will not be disappointed!!! More...

Attention curly girls! Are you having trouble taming your curls? This is the salon for you. I've spent years hating my curls. Mostly because I didn't know how to tame them and make them look nice. That all changed after my first visit to this salon.  Your first appointment includes a consultation where you and your stylist discuss your hair and what treatments are best.  Next is when the magic happens.  You are cut and styled by one of the stylists.  The final moment is when you see yourself for the first time and you realize how truly beautiful curls can be.  This was my first experience at the salon.  That was over 8 years ago.  I ALWAYS feel like a princess after leaving the salon.  That is due to my amazing stylist, Alice and the Curlisto hair products used by the salon.  The salon goes above and beyond by also teaching you how to maintain your curls.  You can schedule a training session or watch the styling videos on the website.  I highly recommend the videos even if you don't have an opportunity to visit the salon. So let's talk details.  There are several levels of stylist which will determine the overall price.  I personally use a master stylist.  The hair services are what you would expect at any other hair salon, cuts, color, conditioning treatments, blow outs, special up do styling.  The salon has it's own product line.  It is a bit pricey but totally worth it and you can order online.  The salon itself is clean and modern.  The staff are always polite, attentive and professional.  I don't give 5 stars that often but this salon deserves it!  Check out the website for yourself christonyc.com. I have struggled with curly hair all of my adult life, unable to have any consistent outcome on a daily basis. I had resorted to flat ironing my hair, but that created more damage to my, already dry, frizzy hair. I had read about Christo's salon in New York, and on a trip to the city, I was able to get an appointment with him. He changed my life! He gave me a great cut, and then patiently showed me how to do my own hair. He is gifted, kind, and cares so very much about his art and his clients. I am going forward, loving my curls at long last. Thank You, Christo!!! More...

I had a  legit "Hair Emergency" having received a horrific cut from a stylist in Louisville, KY ("Oh, sure, Honey Lamb...I can cut curly hair real good", she crooned.  I left in tears. She gave me a straight across bob.) right before I was going on a trip to NYC. I read the reviews for Christo Fifth Avenue while I was on the tarmac getting ready to fly in to the city.  As luck would have it, I walked in the salon to book an appointment and Marianna just happened to have a cancellation.  She completely fixed the mess I walked in with and made my hair go back to it's fabulous, naturally curly state.  I'll be flying in again!!!! Best. Curly cut. Ever. More...

Christo is known for his expertise with curly hair. Although I have seen him work mostly on clients with color. I've used Curlisto products for years but never had the chance to visit the salon. I was in town recently and was able to arrange a curly cut with Mariana. From the moment I walked in the studio, I felt welcomed. No pretentious vibes here! Mariana was very patient and answered all of my questions. She gave me a great cut, and I even popped for the Biosoftening treatment. I'm so glad I did! I've done the Brazilian Blowout in the past, and I believe it wrecked my hair once my natural curls started to re-emerge. This is totally different! I got to keep my curls, just softer and frizz-free. She showed me the recommended process for styling, and I left the studio feeling like my best self. It's very rare I can leave a salon without pulling my hair up in bun because the stylist didn't understand how to style my hair. I will definitely be back when I am in the city again. Thank you! I have been a client of Christo's since he opened his salon many years ago and wouldn't consider going elsewhere.  Prior to meeting Christo, I had always been frustrated with my curly hair, and now am always so happy to share my curly products and knowledge with my fellow curly girls.  From the moment you walk into the salon, you get treated professionally, but really , it feels like you're part of the family.  I was so thrilled to have Marianna travel to NJ for my daughter's recent wedding to style my hair.  I felt so confident walking her down the aisle.  Many thanks to all! I was recently at Curlisto Salon for a cut with Christo. I decided to cut my hair shorter and Christo gave me a trendy and beautiful cut. I also had the new in-house CBD treatment at the salon. The CBD treatment nourishes the scalp and strengthens hair and leaves your hair feeling healthy and refreshed. The treatment only took about 10 minutes and a few weeks later, my hair is super healthy and has never looked better! Christo took the time to go over the treatment with me and explained all of the benefits. It was most definitely worth it since my curls tend to get very dry. I’m super happy with how my curls look and am looking forward to my next trip to Curlisto! More...

Amazing! Came in for a wedding trial for hair and make up. The whole experience was great. I was warmly greeted in front. Then Christo gave me a consultation and we decided on my look for the day. He gave me a trim to prep my hair. He was there the whole time to guide the stylists; Marianna and Kayla through my look. I used his products leading up to the big day, my hair never fell so nicely on its own. My style team came to my venue the day of. They were great right on time and super friendly. Marianna did my hair, it was perfect. It was exactly what I wanted. The curls held the whole night! Kayla did my makeup. She was great on matching my tone. She made me up without looking too overdone. very natural, exactly what I wanted! Thank you Christo, Marianna and Kayla for making me look and feel beautiful on my special day! More...

I am a 40-something woman who used to have great hair. Then I had two babies and not only did it fall out in clumps after having them, it has totally thinned out and all my texture is gone. For several years I have been hoping that I’d get my curl back. I tried just about everything. And cried a lot over it. Enter Christo Salon and Ivan. was at a work conference in NYC last weekend and by sheer luck stumbled on the Christo Salon. I would only be in NYC one more day and on a whim called the salon at about 9:01 am. Ivan answered the phone and agreed to fit me in. And OH.MY.GOSH!!!! This man gave me the best haircut of my life, but the visit was so much more than a great hair cut (he has a PhD in curly hair, by the way) Ivan took about an hour to TEACH me exactly how to fix my own hair (how and what products to use) and he didn’t let me off the hook without demonstrating that I could fix it myself when I got home. I left that salon feeling so confident and my hair hadn’t looked so good in over 10 years. Ivan also gave me tons of Christo samples and not once did he push any products on me. Needless to say, if you can’t guess from this review, I’ll never use anything but Christo products again. Now if I can just figure out how to make it out to NYC a few times a year so Ivan can cut my hair I’ll be golden. Thank you Christo and Ivan!!! More...

After constantly being disappointed by Ouidad (where my stylist, Jason did the opposite of what I wanted and booked 3 clients at once), I decided to try a new place. Best decision I ever made. I made an appointment on Saturday for a cut and dry and was accommodated that same day. Ivan was my stylist and he did an amazing job. As most people with curly hair do, I worried about how much hair would be cut off and how it would look after it was dry. These fears were quickly put to rest as Ivan talked me through my cut. My hair was still long enough for me to say I have long hair and the curls fell perfectly into place. Ivan spent a tremendous amount of time educating me on the products and techniques to be able to style my hair at home. He even gave a hands on tutorial where I had to dry parts of my hair while he corrected my technique. I was surprised at how patient he was with me and how he personalized my appointment, instead of running through a script. I am grateful to Ivan and will definitely be returning to him. More...

Let me start off by simply saying how absolutely wonderful this salon is. All of the stylists are extremely friendly and seem VERY experienced cutting curly hair (although I know they do all hair types.) It's rather difficult finding a good salon that can handle curly hair and Mariana did a fantastic job (at this point I'd probably trust her with my life haha.) My hair has never looked so good!! I immediately felt comfortable when I entered the salon for a consultation and Mariana took her time delicately brushing my hair, telling me which products she was using, and showing me how to style my hair myself at home. I was also introduced to Christo who was very nice and charismatic! Love the salon and love the products. Will definitely return. Worth every penny! More...

My hair is insanely curly and look mixed hair. I have tried almost all the curly hair salons in NYC and even some in other states and internationally. My co-worker recommended Christo on Fifth, specifically Alice. Alice spent time with me and listened to what I wanted, which by the way was a lot of random thoughts. Alice translated my nonsensical thoughts into coherent ideas and gave me a fantastic cut. Alice also saved me from making a mistake with my hair. My review I received! From the moment you step into his salon, it like stepping out of cloud 9. His staff are well trained and know exactly what you want. Mariana was my first hair dresser there, she knew exactly my problem area but she asked me what I used as far as hair products! She blowed me away from what I heard what the products was doing to my hair. It was over drying my hair and my ends looked like a Brillo pad lol. She recommended me some to go to products. Ever since my visit my luscious curly hair was noticed by my friends. Now It's the only products I use today. Also Alice cut and treated my hair for my birthday in 2016 and my hair has grown and looks much healthier than my ugly Brillo ends. lol I love everything about Christo 5th avenue. I'm glad I can go to a salon knowing the stylist won't rush you out just to get the next client. I am pleased with my hair and I will recommend this place for everyone! Not only the staff are well trained and knowledgeable about Christo's products. They stand behind his product very well and execute every time I go. Going in there is like going to heaven you have your coffee, wine and tea! I love this place if there was 10 stars I will give them 20 ! Thank GOD for the KING OF CURLS! -KEILA More...

Ivan Torres is one of the best colorists in NYC, hands down. My hair was pretty damaged from overexposure to salt water, chlorine and sun, and the highlights had turned a brassy color that was very unflattering. I visited Christo Fifth Avenue last Friday, just before commencing three days of shooting Comic Con at Javits, and he overhauled the color and gave me a gorgeous rich reddish brown with highlights that really pop in the Autumn sunlight. The blowout that followed the color process was fabulous and I didn't wash my hair for 5 days; the products at Christo are that good. I was particularly happy with the color and the blowout as I was meeting so many new people that weekend and I felt confident that my hair looked great in the awful lighting of the convention center. Christo's salon is big and airy with great window light and elegant decor. One of the best things is the chairs at the wash station are so comfortable I could fall asleep, which isn't hard to do, particularly when Jenny washes my hair. Jenny gives AMAZING head massages as she conditions your hair; the kind you want to never end. The minute I arrive I am offered a choice of three beverages; I usually take the glass of wine ;). Ivan is very patient as he listens to my anxieties about my color, the roots, etc, and his advice about levels and color is always spot on. I trust him with my hair's color implicitly. His cuts are fantastic as well; swift and precise and no hesitation. He is very confident and that is the most important quality for me in a stylist. And I always get a fantastic blow out; so smooth and the Curlisto products are great and they smell heavenly. More...

I absolutely loved my experience at Curlisto. When you walk in the atmosphere is very relaxing, the place was very modern and well decorated. The receptionist had a big smile on her face that actually looked genuine which was a plus. I was asked to fill out a survey and offered a beverage- I opted for wine of coarse. The wine was tasty and crisp (I told her to surprise me and she gave me white). My apt was at 5pm but arrived early, I thought I would have to wait but my stylist- Ivan- came right out and started reading my survey which I loved. Many times I have filled out surveys at various beauty locations and the survey just gets tossed aside with nary a glance. He focused on the important parts of the survey such as what I liked about my hair and what my problem areas were. He asked me what I hoped to achieve for my hair with my apt and I told him I wanted a trim with layers plus more volume. He asked me about length and I told him I knew I would lose some length due to dead ends but I didn't want short hair. He touched my hair, studied it a bit, looked at the curl pattern and did a thorough examination. This pleased me bc it made me feel like I was going to get something customized specifically for my hair type. He graciously walked me over to the wash station where someone else was waiting to wash my hair. Her name is Jenny, she was FANTASTIC. A gentle touch, she massaged my scalp, and spoke in low tones asking if the water was ok and if I was comfortable. I honestly felt like I was in a spa. She walked me back to my chair after where Ivan was waiting for me. He explained that he would not cut my hair in traditional layers bc that would cause a triangle shape which is not flattering; he would be doing a special cut (can't remember the name, starts with a D) that would give me layers while also avoiding the triangle shape. I told him I approved and he got to cutting. After he finished he walked me back to the wash station for another rinse in which sweet Jenny applied conditioner to my hair. She walked me back to my chair with a smile and after Ivan detangled my hair (gently), he applied product to my hair in sections. He explained everything he was doing step by step and even gave me a hand mirror so I could better see exactly how he applied everything. He explained exactly what he was applying and showed me the bottles so I could look at the ingredients (I wanted to make sure everything was CG approved- it was). Then he began to diffuse my hair by hand. I was a bit impressed by this bc I've read about other curly salons that plop you down in a full head dryer and don't do much after that. He took his time diffusing and styling my hair, he did a lot of scrunching which is a curly girls best friend! I was very happy with the results; the cut was exactly what I needed and my hair felt light, healthy, yet defined. The pics I attached don't do my hair justice (bad lighting). After all was said and done, he walked me over to the pay station and gave me a bunch of free samples. He did not push products on me, he did not push extra treatments on me, and he was very respectful and mindful of what I wanted. I paid $99 (first time customer price), and left a nice tip for Ivan and Jane. I am extremely happy with my experience there. Afterward I felt relaxed and like I had a spa treatment. The staff was amazing, service was great, and the products they use are not cheap. They use everything from their Curlisto line and it all smells and feels great. I would 100% come back to this salon and I definitely recommend for other curlies out there. Also, Christo himself was in the salon and he seemed friendly and relaxed which is probably why his staff seemed so happy. More...

I've been going to Christo's for over 15 years. I used to hate my curly hair. No one ever knew how to cut it. Now I love my curly hair! Christo is amazing. The salon is beautiful and the entire staff is very friendly. I would highly recommend this salon and their wonderful hair products. More...

My visit was everything I had hoped for, and then some. Christo has been on my radar for many years because of his innovative techniques, his business savvy and his outstanding products. In fact, it was a recent visit to the Curlisto website to stock up on products that convinced me to "treat' myself to a visit to the salon. The salon is chic but very welcoming and everyone there, from the receptionist to the young man who washed/conditioned my hair, was professional yet very warm. But hands down, the best part of the experience was my consultation, cut and style with Rosa. She took time to understand my daily routine, my general lifestyle and to "get to know" my hair. She explained why the products I had been using probably were not the best choice for my hair and recommended what would be more suitable. I am very happy with the cut and am confident that I'll be able to keep the look going...but just in case, Rosa invited me to stop back any time for a "refresher." One way or another, I will most certainly be back and I will certainly recommend the salon (and Rosa) to everyone. More...

I was so very happy to have my haircut by Christo today. I actually cheated on him by going to other stylists (on Long Island, closer to my home)  in the past year.  Getting a haircut locally cost less, was convenient and my hair was styled and blown out straight. However, regardless that these other stylists were recommended by friends, or by a salon that did my highlights, they really did not know how to properly cut & style curly hair. Needless to say, the 3 stylists who cut my hair in the past 6 months or so really botched up the style, cut and shape. Christo to the rescue!  I decided today, no more cheating!!  There is a reason I've been going to Christo for over 15 years. It's just not worth the aggravation or heartache to have someone mess up your curls and then painfully wait for months until it grows out! Whether I wear my hair curly or straight (blowing it out takes time), my hair always lays right, grows in well and looks really great when Christo cuts & styles it. It is certainly worth the cost!! My friends also use Alice and Rosa, two other great stylists in this salon. Once again, thank you so much Christo!!! Ooxx More...

I walked in with my hair looking like a birds nest and I came out with lovely curly hair (my hairdresser I think was called Igor looked scared when he laid eyes on my hair lol), the products to style it and a personal tutorial from my hairdresser on how I should style it and manage it. The whole ordeal cost about $400-$500 (with tip...hopefully my husband doesn't read this because I told him $300 lol). Despite the price, I'm glad I went because almost a year later I am still using the same bottles (I use them ever so sparingly) and I can recreate what my hairdresser did that same day! However, this is not somewhere I would come for a regular trim....I have yet to find a place that is reasonably priced where I can just trim my curly hair... More...

I came in with a triangle of frizzy hair that I was embarassed by so I generally just wore it up.  Rosa took the time to talk me through my regimen, experience, etc. and explained to me that I was a) not using enough product, and b) not styling my curls properly.  After the fantastic cut, she walked me through everything she was doing on the styling side and left me with hand written instructions.  I literally almost cried sitting there realizing that for the first time in my 35 years I was actually going to be proud of my hair.  It was an emotional moment.  I left there with a hug from Rosa and the confidence that I can recreate what she did.  Her beautiful cut and styling is still great (and not frizzy!) two days later and I have gotten a ton of compliments.  Thank you Rosa!!! This is my second time at this salon. It was between this and another place for my business; however this place won because the last time I got a cut here... the compliments wouldn't stop flowing and that is what you want.  A change, a difference --- So, I came here. I remembered Rosa from many years ago, and I'm happy that she still works here.  So here goes the nitty gritty review.  - Making the appointment -- Just lovely, what a nice experience.  I was iffy when I called and Jessica made me change my mind and now I definitely wanted to come here.  It helped that she gave a discount for this visit to see Rosa. - When I walked in, I wasn't offered anything and I was parched.  I had to ask for water like three times or more until I finally got it.  - I filled out a form -- that I had filled out before.  (No problem, these things do happen).  - They were ready for my appointment and I met with Rosa right away. - Rosa's consultation was wonderful.  She is not only pleasant, but a wonderful listener.  I gave her my list of 'need to haves, wants, and would like to have'... and she then gave her advise after assessing my hair.  She then sent me to get my hair washed.  - A  wonderful young lady washed my hair.  She was pleasant, and attentive.  Her head massage was wonderful... I was tempted to say 'please some more... I'll pay you'.... But I refrained.  - I brought my Kindle and let her cut my locks away, but felt confident in her work.  My hair was re-rinsed and the styling began. All of my questions were answered quickly and what I deemed honestly.  I found this very important when asking about products.  She did NOT try to sell me anything and that is a BIG PLUS for me.  I hate when places try to peddle their stuff.  It was me who initiated this conversation as I know what I have at home and what I needed.  So I don't feel that I bought a bunch of crap on a whim.  Overall this spot is huge, and very very clean.  I will definitely be going back to it again.  Hopefully next time, I'll be offered a beverage, as I'm usually running from spot A to spot B.  I love my cut and I'm hoping that it will grow out beautifully.  (Maybe next time, I'll pay for more of that head massage) More...

Absolutely love my hair family at Christo Fifth Avenue! The ambience is very welcoming and their new salon is beautiful. Everyone is super friendly and sweet. Plus, their wine/tea/water offering is a nice touch. The stylists are also versatile in many different types of hair, including ethnic hair. I've been seeing Ray since Janurary 2013 and have received cuts/trims and color services from him. First off, Ray is such a cutie and full of great energy. I absolutely ADORE him. I feel that he really listens to what I want, but also provides some great insights to what would be good for my hair too. I have really long and thick hair so having someone who understands the nature of it, what works and what doesn't, is super important. I went here last week to get a cut, color & blow dry w/ a gilt city coupon. The hostess service is impeccable. I was treated like a princess the moment I walked through the door. Ray gave me a 15 min consultation, listened to my concerns, lifestyle & cut off 7 inches. I had a lot of unhealthy hair so drastic measures had to be taken. I like that Ray was quiet, I wanted to read & he let me.  The salon was very professional & I was happy they had a lot of reading material. He did ask me several times about my cut, if it was too much, too little and I felt that he listened to me. My only criticism was the blow dry, it came out frizzy & not as polished as I am used to.By the way, the salon is hard to find since construction is covering the exterior and it is in a building directly across from Redken in an office building. Overall, I was happy and would return, I think the cut was good not the best but better than most. If you get a deal, go. More...

This is a lovely salon and will be my regular salon from now on, even if it weren't for my stylist now being a Senior Designer here!!!So, yes.  I only gave them a try because my stylist, Ray Guh, left his last salon for a position here.  Yes, folks!  He is nice, talented, and kind enough that I will follow him to whichever NYC salon for whom he chooses to work.  You should try him out, everyone!  If you do, let him know that Chris M, The Blundercat, sent you.  He'll know what you mean ;-)Anyhoo, to be honest, I wasn't too happy that the entrance is a "blink and you'll miss it" kinda door...or that the hallway leading to the elevator...and the elevator itself...were both quite claustrophobic in nature.  But I forgot all of that once I arrived in the salon itself.  The interior design is nice, classy, yet still laid back and very inviting.  The receptionist, Cheryl, is a stunningly beautiful woman, but with no airs that I could pick up on.  She was ready for my arrival, had my new client paperwork ready, and made me feel so welcomed.Upon completing the paperwork, I was whisked away, with no wait time, for a shampoo and conditioning.  I cannot recall the lovely girls name, though I believe I was hearing a Russian accent when she spoke, and I know she's blond.  She was so tender yet thorough, and included a temple, hairline, and scalp massage!!!  *insert relaxation drool here*  After completing my S&C, she politely escorted me to Ray's chair.Ray can cut!!!  That's why I have stated with him over the years.  I have very temperamental hair and he knows how to tame it each time.  Every person I have recommended Ray to has said the same things!!!  Over the course of a few sessions, he nursed my hair back to health and advised me on new products to use for my personal best scalp and hair health.  He's fun to talk to while sitting in the chair, and he's a perfectionist whom you know will do you up right.  And, if you're a star boinker when it comes to a stylist, Ray does have celebrity clientele ;-)The price of my cut was very reasonable and quite competitive compared to their area competition.  Just know that, while they do accept cards for payment, you must tip in cash.  So bring that 20% tip in green when you treat yourself to a lovely experience :-) More...

Wavy haired mixed chick girls know what a pain it can be to find a good place to get their hair done. Mullets and frizzy messes are part of my history of nightmares.  Enter Christo.  I used a Giltcity certificate and they did not treat me differently at all.  Alice sat down with me and extensively asked questions about my daily routine (I don't know how to use a hair dryer and I am lazy) and what I want in my hair (trying to grow it out for a wedding later this year). I didn't even ask her to have me weigh my options, but she wanted to make she understood what I needed before she gave suggestions. She really took the time, about 30 minutes or so to really make sure I understand my options. I appreciate this over when stylists just start cutting away without asking what you want or bothering to listen.  Alice is super sweet and made sure to clarify everything she was doing.  My cut was great. It did take a long time, but hey I would rather have it take too long and be done right than getting an assymmetrical mess.  She added some weight to my hair and made great suggestions for giving me the most number of options while maintaining an easy style.Highly recommend Alice! As a curly girl who has been told "I wouldn't touch your hair with a 10 foot pole" and other fabulous quotes, I am always hesitant to get my hair done by someone new. Finally after reading about Tameeka online, I decided to bite the bullet and make an appointment. I have to say, it all seemed so easy for her, and my hair looks amazing, 5 hours after the appointment. It looked pretty good immediately after, but now it looks even better, and I have to admit, I'm excited to see it tomorrow and to follow Tameeka's instructions in the future.I've gotten my hair done in LA and NYC and she knows what she is doing. I know the whole "rake and shake" thing is catching on, but she doesn't make a big deal of it; makes it seem like someone with my level of impatience can take the time to do it, and there was no attitude with her at all. No pushing of products, which I was very surprised by.Everyone in the Salon, from the receptionist who learned my name right away, to Christo, who asked me if I wanted coffee or wine, was extremely nice. The ONLY reason I am not giving this review 5 stars is because the Russian women (yes, there were 2 different hair washers) who washed, conditioned, and combed my hair, seemed a bit clueless about how to comb curly hair. My neck was killing me in that reclining seat, until I finally said, "how about I sit up" and then also offered to help out with a comb when it was taking an hour to comb out my tangles. Not sure what they are doing in that salon. Everyone else was amazing. Thank you Tameeka. More...

I am an African-American girl with very kinky curly texture. Every salon I went so far, wanted to relax my hair. Finally I found Christo after doing some research. He really changed my beauty life. He used his treatment that is called Curlisto re-conditioning. It s amazing how this treatment took all the dryness and kinkiness from my curls. I have long, curly, VERY thick hair and no one knows how to cut it so that it's not too layer-y so that it puffs up, or too blunt that it has no shape. I straighten my hair all winter but I give up on that in the summer because of the humidity. I researched curly hair salons for weeks before deciding on Christo. I honestly chose it because it was the most convenient to my work.I made an appointment and the person available for the time I wanted was Alice. She happens to be a Master Stylist which is more expensive. The Salon is on the 5th floor of a building which weirded me out a little but it was really nice once inside. Alice took her time listening to what I wanted (a cut that works curly or straight). She explained every step along the way and wrote out styling directions for me. She was the nicest, most patient and professional stylist. This was first time I had SOFT curls. I used to use mousse and my hair had a slightly crunchy feeling to it. If I used anything else my hair got frizzy and BIG. Of course I bought the products because I was so excited about the soft curls. They work very well but my hair doesn't look quite as nice as when I got it done.If you have curly hair that is hard to work with, go here. I gave 4 stars instead of 5 because it is expensive and the hours aren't that convenient (I wish they had later appointments). I will definitely be going back.BTW, I thought the finishing pomade was unnecessary but I bought it anyway-I was wrong, it is amazing if your ends frizz/dry out easily. More...

2 May 2011

On Friday afternoon I went to visit, for the very first time, to Christo Fifth Avenue. Before getting my locks styled here I had heard of the famous Christo Salon, and all the magical powers they use to perfectly coif coils of all textures. Intrigued, I had signed up to received emails. A few weeks later I received a package from them containing tiny samples their shampoo, conditioner, structura lotion, and repair styling cream. After immediate use I was disappointed with the results. Fast forward a few more weeks after that. I spotted a coupon on Lifebooker stating "$135 Package at Christo Fifth Avenue: Single Process, Cut & Curlisto Intensive Treatment". After rubbing my dry 3c/4a hair between my fingers, and discussing it with my mom (thanks moms!), I decided to go for it. First, I should mention that this was my first trip to an upscale salon, so when I arrived I was immediately impressed by the style of the furniture and space. Then, everyone was SO NICE! SO NICE! Catered to my every request, including wine! Alice was the women that touched my locks in such a special and deep place that I knew it was instant chemistry, instant magic. Alice asked me about my hair journey starting with adolescence to now. I told her my hair vision, and like a fair Godmother, she made it happen. She started off with the cut, then the initial washing, color, dryer, second washing, intensive treatment, third washing, and then THE STYLE. I have to say, although the whole process was wonderful, I was most impressed with the style. She truly did tame my rebellious curls. I left there wanting to buy all the products she used on my hair, without any pressure. She obliged, and in addition wrote INSTRUCTIONS for me, seriously people, detailed instructions. After that I knew I would be hers forever. Now, I have day 3 hair and I'm still getting compliments. Tonight I will try to do this process on my own, sans Alice, and I'm so scared. Wish me luck! Oh, so you may be wondering why I did not give them 5 stars. Well, that's simple enough, it's the price. The package I received for $135 was originally priced at $400. Yep $400. But Alice my love, do not fret, I WILL BE BACK AGAIN! More...

Tameeka gave me a fantastic cut that has grown out nicely over the months. She listened to my wishes and did not rush through the cut nor the styling. I did not like the salon products but they were fine for the styling and not pushed for sale. A pleasant experience and a good investment in my hair. More...

Short take: Tameeka is masterful - bottom line. Do not hesitate to go here, you will thank your lucky stars you found somewhere that understands how to style curly hair properly. Long take: So, back story. I HATE getting my hair cut and try to avoid it at all costs. Therefore my hair is very long, very thick and unruly, very wavy/ loose curly and very dry. I bit the bullet and decided I had to get my hair cut asap. I've gone to other salons in the city and they were all okay but I wanted to go somewhere where they actually specialized in curly hair and didn't just give me the standard/ bland hair cut they all do...because they don't really know what else to do. This past Friday and Saturday I was hell bent on finding the perfect place and Christo just kept popping up as THE place for curly-haired girls to go. So I built up the courage and called Saturday to see if there was any way they could fit me in that day. They couldn't. At this point I was so focused on getting my hair cut that day I started looking for other places but I knew Christo had a much better rep. So I called back 15 minutes later and explained that I had just called and that I would wait for the next possible appointment instead of going somewhere else, but said since my birthday is next week (cue sad violin music) I really wanted to get in soon. As sweet as they are, they took pity on me and said Tameeka would squeeze me in. Success!I battled my way through the 5th ave tourists and arrived at the salon. The elevators open and behold, a sea of beautifully coiffed curly-haired beauties. Great sign. I checked in, filled out the customer questionnaire and waited for Tameeka to be ready. She was running late so I had to wait for an hour - given that she squeezed me in with about 4 hours notice, I'm not about to complain. Finally Tameeka is ready for me and we talk through what I want/ don't want, my usual hair routine, etc. She immediately knew what to do and got to work. So here is where my normal paranoia kicks in. The entire time I was in a quiet, internal panic - 'Why am I trusting a stranger? She doesn't know what MY hair needs! Should I get up and bolt out the door right now?' I just bit my lip, held it in and sat there, trying to contain my squirming. Fast forward through the rest of the cut. We get to the styling portion and I am fully freaked out. I wanted her to give me the usual blow out but she insisted I let her simulate what it would be like when I 'wash and wear' my hair myself at home. Hmph, I suppose. She put this styling lotion in my hair and put me under a drier to speed up the air drying process. My hair was feeling crunchy to the touch so I am immediately nervous. She sits me back down in the chair and has me lean my head back so she can finish drying my hair with a diffuser. Finally she tells me to sit up; I quickly pop up to see what I expect to be a disaster and when I see myself in the mirror I gasp. It was the BEST haircut I have ever had in my entire life, and that's not an exaggeration. She brought my natural hair back to life. Each curl is perfectly sculpted, the body and bounce is amazing and my hair looks perfectly healthy. The texture is smooth and glorious - she explained the lotion will make hair feel dry but when hair completely dries you run your fingers through to soften it, which is exactly what happened. Tameeka is such a pro - she talked me through how to achieve the style at home, what to use/ not use and didn't push any products on me (although I bought a small bottle of the sculpting lotion). She also gave me her card and told me to come back for the free styling consultation - she insisted that I not let it go to waste; I will definitely be booking that appointment! All in all if you are having any doubts about going here I have to tell you to stop procrastinating and make the appointment fast. Yes they are a bit pricey, but worth every single penny. I will be a customer for life! More...

Alice. Alice. Alice. Although you might be caught off guard by her straight hair, do not fear. Alice loves curly hair and has been a blessing to my once unruly hair. I found Christo Fifth Avenue through an internet search three years ago and after reading online reviews, decided to make an appointment. I have been with Alice ever since. Not only do I leave the salon feeling and looking great, I also enjoy myself while I am there. The attentive employees, the magazines and the chit-chats.  You cannot go wrong! More...

I have been to stylist after stylist in NY but I can confidently say my search has ended! SARA at Christo has definitely given me the best cut by far! Last week she cut my hair and it was an overall great experience. She is fun and friendly while she is cutting (but not in that "over-chatty" sort of way) plus she told me a lot about my hair and how to manage it for myself on a daily basis. That was so helpful! Now my hair looks great for longer than just the few hours after I leave the salon... now it looks great everyday! Thanks Sara! More...

this place is super expensive but worth it for introducing me to great product!  i only cut my hair 1-2 x/year so i can splurge every now and then.  the receptionist is this cute guy with a radio-worthy voice, great manners, and perfectly shaped curls.  christo is seen walking around, cutting people's hair. a great experience, and they teach you how to apply the product and even invite you back so you can show them how you do it and get pointers.  their products are expensive but amazing when you do it right. if you wanna throw down the cash for a good cut for your curlly hair, try this place More...

SARA was a great stylist! It was my first time going to Christo. It was recommended to me by a friend - and although Sara's expertise is in curly hair and I have thick, straight hair, Sara gave me a fantastic cut and style to my boring one length hair and overgrown bangs. I have so much more volume now and the many layers she cut added great texture to my hair. It also doesn't need a lot of maintenance to look good. She also gave me side bangs which I LOVED. It framed my face so well.  Sara made me feel right at home - just the right amount of attentiveness. I was able to relax with a glass of wine and snacks. She took her time with everything - from washing my hair to the cut to helpful haircare advice. Sara is highly recommended. More...

First off- let's establish that I love my curls. Adore them. Hold them in the highest esteem.  As such, after a very bad experience with a crappy salon in Texas, I felt so protective of my curls that I avoided anyone with scissors for 5 years, submitting to only the tiniest of trims.  So, I decided to take the plunge already, as the focus recently has been less on the curls and more on the crazy of my crazy curls.  I needed a stylist to shape my hair and release it's full potential. Curly headed ladies and gentleman: I give you [insert angelic choir] Rosa.  She was amazing.  She was super patient with me, asked a lot of questions and explained her plan, and made sure I was kosher with it.  After giving my hair a trim, she have me something more valuable: an actual lesson in styling my own hair.  Totally doable at home, and replicable. My hair looks better than ever, and I definitely plan to go back! She is a senior stylist, so the total came to $145, not including tip. I will be back.P.S.- Not only did I get a compliment on the street, and by the barista at Starbucks; but I actually got asked out immediately after leaving the salon. (It was by the Mister Softee ice cream man though, and I had to say no; as tempting as the idea of free ice cream was). More...

After many failed hair cuts and searching for a new salon or stylist each time I needed a haircut (I am talking years of switching salons) I finally found someone who understands my hair - I have all the elements of hair that stylists can't cut - curly, wavy, thick and just to add more complications, straight on top. Sara listened to me, told me right away that the cut I had was wrong for my hair and face, which I have been trying to tell stylists for so long but they never listen and cut my hair exactly the way I asked them not too.  No more - Sara reshaped my hair and told me how to style (this will take some practice but worth learning) - she was great and I will continue to go to her - as my boyfriend said - I can't believe it took 6 yrs. to find someone who can cut your hair - and I agree....finally someone who can cut my type of hair...The hair products are worth buying too - I will finish what I have now and invest in Christo's products.... I switched from Ouidad to Christo to follow my trusty stylist Sarah.  I found Christo charming, welcoming and more elegant than other curly hair salons in the city.  I have found that some salons run like a factory and try to get you in and out as quickly as possible but Christo's stylists take the time to explain cut, color and styling.  This is great as I hate getting my hair done fabulously and never beIng able to recreate it again.   I highly recommend Sarah.  She is super sweet, talented and will shoot you straight on what will and won't look good on your hair.  I usually hate going to the salon but I think this salon just might change that!  Highly Recommend! I went to Christo to get my hair done the other week and it was cut by SARA.  She literally changed my life.  I have curly hair and I've never known what to do with it.  She taught me how to style my hair and it looks so good.  I can't believe that for 26 years I didn't know anything about my own hair!!  Now my hair is so managable and the curls look great.  The cut she gave me is cute and modern - I feel like I fit in with the rest of NYC.  If you want to have someone explain your hair to you, or if you want a great cut/styling experience - go to SARA!!   PS - I love the smell of the Curlisto products. First off I just have to say that this is the first time I did not have to go home after a cut and re-wash and style it...my hair looks like curls you would find on TV.  I have medium curly hair and I do not have time to spend hours on it each day so everyday my hair looks dry, boring and flat so I decided to try Christos because their products and stylists are geared to curly hair and I just have to say that Tameeka is a miracle worker.  They start you off with filling out a questionnaire to see what you think is wrong with your hair, what you want, what you like, etc.  Then you sit with your stylist and go over everything.  I told her my hair is super dry and frizzy.  So after a deep condition, she cut my hair to compliment my face then re-washed it and I told her I wanted curls that are loose not tight but without having to use "tools" or take hours to do...Tameeka took the time to show me how to apply the leave in conditioner and lotion to get my looser curls...it takes all of 5 minutes (though probably a bit longer for me..it is like watching Rachel Ray..30 minutes for her to cook 5 meals but not so much for the novice).  They do not push their products on you at all they explain it can be done with the same things I use but I mentioned that I wanted to use theirs because it is water based not alcohol based which is just death to curly hair and thats when she mentioned that she figured as much because my hair was not really dry at all but it was probably the products I used.  She still did not push any of their stuff but gave me tons of samples to try (I still bought the larger versions)  Finally she gave me a written step by step how to on keeping my hair healthy and kept telling me to call her anytime if I have any questions and to come back in 2 weeks to get a complimentary styling lesson.  She also gave me a website that sells the products for a discount.  The price was extremely reasonable for the service and the amazing cut - only $135 and even with all the products I bought, it only came to a bit over $200.  I cannot say enough that Tameeka is great and this is the best my hair has ever looked and I do not even hate my curly hair.  The salon itself is laid back and comfortable.  Stephen, the receptionist, is super friendly and sweet.  20+ years of bouncing from salon to salon, I have finally found one I will stay with.  Even my boyfriend said to go back to them.  His comment was - I didn't clean the shower yet because I was waiting for you to get home so you can wash your hair and get ready but wow you don't need to.  From a guy, that is a huge compliment.  GO TO TAMEEKA.  :) More...

This place saved the day! First of all, when I booked an appointment, the receptionist was super friendly and accommodating! My hair was in major need of rescue, so after reading the reviews here and going to the website, it looked like they could. So I was originally put with Slava, who was super nice and friendly. I really appreciated him being honest with me and letting me know that tight curls/kinky hair is not his specialty and he wanted to make sure I had a great experience, so he put me with Tameeka, which was a good move. I am glad he did that and didn't just try and cut my hair all crazy.Tameeka was awesome. She was super friendly and I could immediately tell that she knew curly hair. My hair was super unhealthy and she was able to explain why. I decided to get an Intensive Treatment, which was mad expensive, but my hair was tore UP. It smelled really good though, and feeling my hair now, it was worth it.While Tameeka did my hair, she explained everything she was doing, and provided tips for how I could maintain healthy hair. And when she styled my hair, she gave me a paper with directions and pictures so that I can style my own hair at home. Also, the stuff I got comes with a "hair class" where I can come back to her and show her how I've been doing my hair, and any problems that I'm having, and she will teach me how to style it better at home. IT'S FREE. I think that's awesome. This place knows it's bomb, so they don't make you dependent on them, because they know you'll come back. They don't push their products, because they're good and you're going to buy them any way. I was worried, but this was a great experience! And bonus! My appointment was at 5, and the place closes at 6. I switched hairdressers, Tameeka already had a client, I decided to get my hair treated, cut, AND styled, and so I was the last person to leave the shop at 7. Not once did anyone rush me, or make me feel weird about keeping them open late. Everyone was so nice! It was worth the investment (which it was, an investment. I could have bought a round trip airline ticket) More...

I've been here twice and loved it both times, at the location on 5th Ave near Rockefeller Center.  My hairdresser - Cypriano - gave me a great cut both times.  First time I was going from really long hair to a "skim-the-shoulders" cut.  First, the hairdresser was totally willing to listen to what I wanted.  I wanted my hair shorter than Cypriano recommended.  He disagreed, but only briefly, then gave me a great cut at the length I wanted.  Also, I was donating my hair to Locks for Love, so the longest portion needed to be cut a certain way, and he was happy to accommodate. And he did 2 different treatments to soften and moisturize my hair, which made it look and feel fabulous. Definitely pricey, but fabulous.Second time I was there, I just needed a trim.  My fantastic hairdresser saw immediately that my hair was dry.  I asked whether I should do the (pricey) treatments I did last time.  Cypriano could've made a ton more money doing it, but instead he recommended I buy a (much cheaper) deep conditioner to use at home.  I really appreciated that he wasn't just out to make money on the more expensive treatments, and he was right!  My hair is much better with the regular deep conditioning. If you're looking for a curly hair place, and your hair is type 3B like mine (see naturallycurly.com - a great source of info for curly hair gals), I'd highly recommend this place!  Plus I love the products - had been using the same styling products for 15 years, and switched over to Curlisto's!  (By the way - salon name is Christo, and products named Curlisto.)
