I was in the area for a sports event at Taft. Where ever I am I always Yelp to find the best place to eat. Yelp has led me to great spots in CT, MA, RI, and NY including Cavallo's. There is a lot to be said for Nardelli's which is a local success story but the Italian combo I had yesterday from Cavallo's tops them all. The bread was perfect, the meat so tasty, the toppings perfectly proportioned. Fresh, delicious, very high quality... I can't say enough. The guy behind the counter was friendly and straight forward and the woman who did the check out was top notch customer service personified. She chatted warmly with teenagers, a local cop, and strangers. I got a couple of loaves of homemade Italian bread and a quart of vegetarian minestrone. Wow! I only wish I lived closer. I would never have found this neighborhood gem without Yelpers. Thank you all! More...

Great Italian deli (if you like that) I get a salad with breaded chicken on it, they also give me some awesome bread on the side. Maybe too much bread and the vinegar in the italian dressing makes me burp, but I go back every week cause it's good. I recomend this place if you're looking for good. More...

I've been getting grinders from Cavallos Deli for years. It's convenient for me because I live up the hill from there. This friendly neighborhood market makes everyone feel welcome and you won't be disappointed. If you're planning to come to the Watertown/Oakville area, check this place out for yourself... More...

This is one of my favorite spots for lunch when i'm at work! There's a good selection of sandwiches and dinners. I usually get a turkey sandwich on a hard roll. It's always very meaty, which is good for so much bread. Definitely worth the money. The staff is always very friendly, the woman working the front counter, Gina , is always chatting with customers like close friends. Overly a great small gem in Oakville. More...

I have been eating on the road for many years.  I travel around the state in order to provide customers with Tree Solutions. I always find an excuse to make my way into their neighborhood around lunchtime. Gina and Dave work their asses off in order to provide guys like me a great lunch experience. Family owned and operated they always have time to joke with the regulars. So it's not only great food you receive at Cavallo's. Entertainment is free. Kudos to them and their staff. More...

Located off of Main Street on a side road in a residential area, this is the epitome of a hidden gem. That being said, the best treasure is usually hidden. To be honest, I have a bit of a grudge against Subway as it's a place I liked as a kid, only because I was naïve and didn't know any better. As I grew older, I found that the one consistent thing with Subway was that it would make me sick. Their sandwiches come out looking deflated and "sad" and they would consistently make me feel nauseous. It's ironic that their motto is "eat fresh" when their food is anything but. It's depressing and borderline offensive that most people's first thought of a grinder is the omnipresent Subway chain. I wanted more from my food and because of that, I swore off Subway years ago and never looked back, refusing to settle for subpar sandwiches. Since then I've been proactive and had a LOT of delicious grinders as they're a dime-a-dozen in this area, but in all my searching, I never found "the one" until I had Cavallo's.I first discovered this place after hunting for a long time to try and find the best Italian Combo grinder in the area. After the first bite of a Cavallo's grinder, I knew that I had struck gold. This small little shop has literally the best grinders I've ever had. First off, you're given two choices of bread; Milete's and soft bread, both of which are great. For those who don't know, Milete's is a more crunchy type Italian-style bread and it's quite tasty. The soft bread they also offer is also tasty, so whether you want a hard or soft type of bread, you'll be happy with it.My quest for the best Italian Combo started off with good bread, but the real meat of the sandwich is well.. the meats! You are in for a treat, this isn't some dried out, old low-quality meat you'd find at a Subway, Cavallo's only uses fresh, high-quality meats and they can custom make your sandwich as well, as I like to add turkey to the ham and salami on my grinder. The next part of the best Italian Combo is the veggies and I like a lot of 'em. Lettuce, tomato, peppers, onions, olives; that's what makes an already great grinder taste even better, and just like the meats, the veggies are fresh and plentiful. When you combine all the delicious aforementioned ingredients; bread, meats and veggies, you are presented with a massive sandwich. You definitely get your money's worth here; they definitely do not skimp on their grinders as these things are big and heavy, the way a grinder should be. Unwrapping a grinder from here is like Christmas morning. Cavallo's also has a grocery store area where you can buy many other items including salads, pasta, sauces, chips, sodas, beer, and more. They also make pizza, which looks good and I definitely will try in the future once my grinder obsession subsides. The staff that works there is friendly, but usually busy, as word of mouth is why this place is so packed during peak hours. Be patient though, it's worth it!The best analogy I can come up with is that this place is like the filet mignon of grinders, whereas eating at Subway in comparison is equivalent to a week-old McDonald's hamburger. Sure it may be a little cheaper, but the quality is suspect, the food isn't fresh and you get what you pay for. I've never had a bad experience here and it's why I will always go back. I usually get the Italian Combo grinder because I'm in love with it, but I've also had the Buffalo Chicken grinder which is extremely delicious as well. I can't make it any clearer; this place is home of hands-down THE BEST grinders I've ever had.To reiterate, Cavallo's has literally the BEST grinders I've ever had. More...
