About

Casellula is a cheese-focussed wine bar in New York City's Hell's Kitchen. In addition to our beautiful cheese plates, on which each cheese is served with a house-made accompaniment chosen specifically to compliment that cheese, we have a menu of small, sharable dishes, salads, pannini, and spectacular desserts.

This place certainly has nice cheese, but that ignores its numerous other charms.  It really is tiny (as in "our tiny house air b&b had a living room this size!"), set on a non-descript side street, and open evenings only.  But for chic comfort, tasty bites (in addition to cheese they have some lovely desserts), wide wine selection by the glass or bottle, and great service, and civilized price, it should get a guidebook triple star. Cassellula is THE PLACE for those of us who love cheese and wine! One of the workers talked us through the cheese case since they were not too busy on the night we visited: a Friday after a Broadway show. We shared a grilled cheese (so delicious and rich!!) plus two types of cheese from the case. We also had a red blend that was fabulous. This is a cozy, cool, delicious place to share a love of cheese. More...

Hands down the best cheese pairing bar in all of Manhattan. I discovered Casellula through my company because my boss was friends with the owner and so hosted wine and cheese events every month for the women in our group with the cheese being catered by Casellula. The wine, despite being chosen by a renowned sommelier, was fine whereas the cheeses were always BOMB and I always appreciated the fascinating and patient explanations for the pairings that Casellula's owner provided. So I decided to cough up my own money to try some more at the actual restaurant and am itching to go back just three days later. Sure, you can get cheese from Trader Joes or Whole Foods. But have you had cheese expertly paired with matcha fudge? Or with carrot chips? Or with some sort of wasabi infused magic sauce? The creativity, as well as the expertise, is phe-nomnom-inal (see what I did there?). The variety of cheese offered is also fantastic. My boyfriend and I got the 6 cheeses for 5 deal as well as two glasses of wine each. I forgot which cheeses and which wines, but they were all absolutely delectable. Service was also friendly (our waiter did unfortunately forget our order of peppers but I won't hold that against him too much because he did remember me gushing over the matcha fudge and so included a different type of fudge in the cheese plate). And the atmosphere on a Friday evening past 11pm was perfect - not too loud, candle-lit and cozy. I will be back! More...

One star is because this lovely wine bar is only a block from home, but the cheese selection and unique wines (by the glass) warrant a solid 4 stars. We chose the wines we wanted to drink and let the cheese maven make complementary selections. Each cheese, placed in the best order for tasting, was accompanied by something that belonged with it. From a honey or a jam to a preserved citrus, this cheese guru knows her stuff. Next time I'll try some real food. . . Maybe. I really liked the cheese. Great place to meet some friends and hang. This was a particularly enchanting stop. We always leave one night free of reservations in NYC to stop in to any place that calls our name.  This was our choice and oh my we're we rewarded.  It's a quaint nine table spot that welcomes you like home.  Impressive cheese and charcuterie selections.  All there food items are prepared in a well outfitted corner of the restaurant and fill the room with delicious smells.  We opted for the empanadas and pigs ass sandwich and both were wonderful.  In particular the chef is a genius with the sauces paired with each meal.  I could slather myself in them!    Thoughtful wine selections and polite unintrusive service has me recommend Casellula with zero reservations.  You will enjoy your stop here. As cheese is my absolute favorite food, I'd been wanting to try this local joint out for a while. Finally, the opportunity struck when a friend and I were looking for some wine and a light dinner. It was about 8 pm on a Saturday, and the place was modestly full. We opted to sit at the bar and save the table for someone looking to have an a full meal. We ordered a modestly-priced Chianti, which was fairly tasty. We thought about ordering the fromagere's selection plate, but neither of us like bleu chese, so we didn't want to have a selection where we weren't sure if we'd enjoy one of the options. Instead, we ordered 3 cheeses of our own selection: Petit Billy (very soft), Dalmantiac (semi-firm), and another the name of which I cannot remember, but it was from CA (firmer). The first came with a spectacular Passionfruit Chia pudding pair, the second with an savory oniony dip, and the third with sun-dried tomato pesto. All were yummy. My only complaint was that they could have provided a bit more bread with the selections (no one likes to ask for more!). All in all, a good spot and I would return, but it did not knock my socks off. More...

i'm hesitant to write this review and show my rating only because i don't want Casellula to be discovered and become one of those "it" places.   Casellula is neighborhood perfection.  Wine selection is amazing, the bacon wrapped peppers are exquisite and oh ... the selection of cheeses is beyond belief and is superb!  The ambiance is everything you'd hope for.  Despite my 5 star rating and rave review, pls don't visit Casellula - so i always get a table.  Thank you More...

Oh Casellula how I love thee. Let me count the ways...I have been to Casellula 5 times in the past month. Yes I'm a neighborhood gal, but that's only part of the reason I frequent this joint so often. Big reason 1 - the food. The menu is pure yum. The endive salad should be the city's new IT salad. It's insanely good. The pastrami sandwich is probably the best pastrami sandwich you'll come across in the city. But the real lure is the fromagger's choice cheese plate. Every cheese pairing is delicious and surprising. There was a blue cheese with maple fudge pairing, another cheese with a caramelized onion marmalade. It's the best cheese plate on the planet. Get it. You won't be disappointed. The wine selections are on point and their sommelier always recommends right. So why the 4 stars? The seating issue. There are no resos so it's first come first serve but because it's such a small establishment they will only seat you at the exact right table. This means that even though there are plenty of 4-person tables available, your party of 2 will not be seated until an exact table for 2 people opens up. They will not seat you at the 4 person table. Even if it remains empty for the next half hour.  It makes sense for a small establishment but as a diner waiting and waiting for the exact right table can get frustrating. More...

Came here on a date night, and sure enough, the wine and cheese brought about some sparks. They seem to have a revolving menu of wines but on that night, I had a Syrah, which had such a spicy kick to it, yum!As for cheese, we had some Brie melted over bread covered in a spread of pistachio butter and cranberries. It was divine. The atmosphere is buzzing as seating is first come first serve, makes it a little crowded at times. Nevertheless, service was welcoming. More...

This is a really great spot for a D A T E or a GNO. I was here on a Monday night and found it to be nearly the perfect ambiance. It wasn't full or very empty (thank you school nights) which I love when going to an intimate spot like this. I highly recommend all those that stop by on a Monday to try the fresh mozzarella - which is only available on Monday's. It's an experience where they "make" the fresh mozzarella in front of you from the cheese curds. I personally love mozzarella and this really made for a fun and interactive experience with the staff. We also got the pig sandwich which was delicious! It was super rich but came with pickles to lighten and freshen up the taste BUDS. The brussel sprouts we got were good but I would recommend trying something else on the menu - we just really needed veggies that night LOL. Overall, I 100% enjoyed my experience here with the great food and great wine. More...

The first thing I noticed about Casellula when I came here was how bright and airy it looked. Wine bars usually have this dimly-lit, intimate vibe about them but this place had huge windows that let a ton of light in, and the lighter paint on the walls really made the place look inviting and spacious. They are famous for their variety of cheese, and to be honest that was not what we came here for. We did try one, a mild cow's milk cheese that was quite nice and came with a bit of bread and wine-pickled onions. We also tried their chistorras in a blanket (pigs in a blanket made with spicy chorizo) and those were quite tasty as well. The wines we got were good and we happily got a second glass each. Our server was sweet and attentive and helped us pick the wine we wanted.Really liked the ambiance and the focus on wine and cheese - I'll be back to expand my horizons and try out more of their cheeses soon! 'You have to be a romantic to invent your time and money in cheese' Indeed! Don't even think of looking anywhere else for first date night options. just walk in here already! It's a small, very cozy and romantic establishment. The food is usually small plates and so delicious. We started with a bottle of 'Por Que No'. I would highly recommend getting this one. We also ordered the cheese platter which has a selected of fresh to highly aged cheese from all over the world. The blue cheese was our absolute favorite. Each cheese was carefully and perfectly paired with different options like caramel sauce, mushroom, to strawberries. We thoroughly enjoyed our cheese platter. For some small bites we also ordered the watermelon salad. Never thought of putting feta cheese to my melons, and with a hint of spices, it's one in a 'Mellon!' Their grilled cheese! Oh my! My friend joked it should be called 'thrilled cheese'. Perfectly grilled bread with loads of cheese just melting in your mouth. This place is just pristine. Wonderful and accommodating staff. A mouth-watering oasis in the crowded landscape of restaurants within the theatre district and hell's kitchen.I love this place because it sticks to what it's good at (Wine + Cheese? yes please!) - but even the above and beyond food items are delicious and for the most part served tapas style. Get the Pig's Ass Sandwich... on the quesadilla... and think of me... A cozy, tiny spot (arrive during theater hours to miss the pre-and-post crowds) that's perfect for saddling up to the bar and being treated to an adventure through lists and lists of wine and cheese. In fact, the space itself is situated around a giant cabinet of the finest soft, hard, blue, etc cheeses - with a fromager on site to craft the perfect plate. My favorite thing to do is go with a dry, full-bodied red - then ask the fromager to choose their faves to pair. I'm never disappointed and am often delighted by the nuts, sauces, or sides that are paired with each cheese. It's my go-to spot whenever I'm in Midtown West, meeting up with an old (or new) friend, or just want to kill some time before an event. The staff is friendly, knowledgeable - not to mention the owner and a chef there have written a book together (Composing the Cheese Plate) - which is displayed in the window. Tip: It took me years to finally do it, but don't miss Mozzarella Mondays - the only time they offer fresh, hand-stretched Mozzarella from 7pm until it runs out! It was such a fun experience - one of those little NY hidden gems.Take a date, take the girls, take your fam, take me? :) More...

I had stopped by this place multiple times but I was always too early for dinner [sometimes by an hour or more] It is a nice little place, small, tasteful decor. It is a wine and cheese venue although there are many food options. I was alone so after being seated and ordering a glass of red wine [Badia e Coltobuono] I opted to order the pig's ass sandwich. I thought maybe it would be too much to eat and was hesitant to order anything else at that time. It arrived and it was just the right size and very filling. It came with a vat of mustard alongside which was very tasty. One thing I do like about it is that you can order a flight of cheeses each $7. If you order 6 you pay for 5 but the cheese person makes the decision for you and there are no substitutions. It is a great place to go with friends and to make a meal of wine and cheese. The waitstaff was very accommodating and I was told that if I wanted a flight of cheeses, there was someone there I could talk to and ask questions about my preferences. The restroom was clean, well maintained and handicap accessible. I would recommend and return. More...

The cheese plate I had here was out of this world, and the other food was all very tasty, too. Here's what I tried:+ chef's selection of cheese + pig's ass sandwich+ watermelon and feta salad+ stuffed peppadew peppers+ asparagus+ kale caesar salad+ rainbow cake (special for pride month)Like I said, the cheese plate was phenomenal. My second favorite dish was the watermelon salad, which had the best feta I've ever tried. The other dishes were great, though I didn't particularly care for the kale salad. Minus one star because while a friend and I were waiting for our third, I watched as the host sat a party of two at a quad even though there were other tables available, and we then had to wait quite a bit for one to open up once our third person arrived. I'm familiar with silly seating policies at NYC restaurants, trust me, but the host gave us a bit of attitude about it when we pointed this out. Anyway, would definitely return! More...

Casellula Cheese and Wine CafeI was visiting my daughter in Spanish Harlem and fixing up her apartment while she was at work for a birthday surprise.Happy Hour! Her roommate had picked some place different in Midtown so we were on our way in an Uber and would meet the others there later. When the driver stopped and let us out he said that we were now in Hell's Kitchen. No not Gordon Ramsey or the tv show. This was a neighborhood on the West Side along the Hudson River in Midtown with a very illustrious past.  From 1800 to the 1980's Hell's Kitchen (polite name Clinton) had a history that's "rich with gangsters and ghosts, streetwalkers and speakeasies, mysterious disappearances and gruesome murders"...nice choice!"Though it is now known for its Off Broadway theatres, chic restaurants, and condominium towers".Our destination was Casellula Cheese & Wine Cafe.It was a Friday evening in NYC so we were luckily got seated on three just emptied barstools on the corner of the bar.A very nice server offered their menu of varied wines from different countries available by the glass or bottle and a interesting selection of tapas.  Having returned recently from my favorite Paris (see reviews) this place felt like a Parisian cafe. There were several nice friendly groups happily sharing wine and spirited conversations both at their few tables and the small bar.  The very cool light fixtures hung from the ceiling and the walls were graced with nice artwork.  Toward the back was a lighted case filled with inviting pastries and wine racks.  The lighting was adjusted perfectly dim and the coziness colors and smells chimed in to create a wonderful ambience...big plus!I ordered a glass of a Sancerre Pinot Noir which was fabulous with great color bouquet balance and wonderful taste that laid on my tongue...winner.  The other two were equally pleased with the Cabernet that they had chosen.A very nice lady to my left and I started a conversation that ventured in all directions.  My new friend Hope was from CA and was in NYC for business (where she had lived earlier).  Turns out she was an ad exec with a few Super Bowl commercials to her credit.  She ordered a refill of what I was having and shared my enthusiasm for my choice.Love meeting lively interesting people when I am out and about and traveling.  Hope was warm and friendly. My daughter soon arrived joined her friends and I and my new favorite server quickly poured her a glass of a nice red.  My wife followed in soon having walked from Penn Station (to get her steps in) and now the birthday celebration was on.As she shared my tasty Sancerre my wife suggested ordering some food.  Here's the fun part.  Casellula presents a wonderfully different and curious menu.We found Smoked Duck Breast Salad, White Bean Rosemary Crostini, Roasted Rabbit Sausage, Pig's Ass Sandwich, Mac And Cheese, and many other clever dishes... I have to come back.Hope offered bites of her Cheese Board which was heavenly. So we opted for the same a selection of six different cheeses paired with sauces creams compotes brittle and other delightful concoctions. Our choice arrived in the hands of a lovely charming and friendly lady named Liv (short for her middle family name Livingston).  Born in Europe she had landed in NYC by way of New Orleans and Rome.Remember I love meeting new interesting (beautiful) people. She presented the board and described in great detail the cheeses it's flavor and country of origin along with their mouth watering parings and ingredients.I have never (including myself) and Paris heard such a masterful presentation of foods and cheeses in all of my experiences...cudos Liv.There was a variety of cream cheeses hard cheeses bleu paired with their complimentary wizardry of brittle chutneys beets compotes and other wonderfully surprising flavors both sweet and tart.  All were great with our wines.I wish I was that clever!  We finished off sharing a large slice of their Pride Cake served complete with a lit candle  along with our off key singing of Happy Birthday for my daughter turning 23 the next day.Returning from the rest room in the back I ran into Liv and complimented her on her charming manner and expertise.  When I also mentioned how equally wonderful our wine server had been she simply smiled and shared that he was her husband.Folks Casellula in Hell's Kitchen NYC goes on the top of my sure to repeat A list and I can't wait to return.I highly recommend that you add Casellula to your must try list when in NYC and say hi to Liv for me.Oh...try their cheese board.J'amie Le vin,Ricardo y Julia More...

Absolutely loved this cozy, romantic wine and cheese shop... it provided a perfect date night before our Broadway show! We sampled 5 types of cheeses and 3 types of wine, and absolutely loved all of them. Their cheese list is SO long and SO varied, which feels like somewhat of an adventure, I'm all about variety. Of the 5 we chose, they all varied in texture and had bold colors and flavors. We had a hard time picking a favorite, but there were no misses. Their accoutrements are delicious.... a caramel coffee sauce to go with the bleu cheese, orange marmalade, etc. Our server was excellent, he didn't seem annoyed with our requests for copious amounts of bread haha. I even felt their prices were reasonable for Hell's Kitchen! As far as wine goes, I'm a simple creature and went for their Riesling which was delicious and crisp as usual. They gave us complimentary goat cheese truffles that were divine! I'd definitely recommend getting some when you stop in! More...

My mother and sister raved about Casellula for almost a year before I decided to try it out. We came on a rainy Tuesday night and were seated within 10 minutes. Our host and server were attentive and friendly.  We decided to have the caponata crostini, charcuterie board and the fromagère's choice of cheese - everything was outstandingly delicious. The fromagère came out to explain each cheese and its pairing, ranging from mild to stronger. For dessert, we had the chocolate cake (with fresh cream poured on top) and three truffles. These truffles were chocolate, goat cheese and hazelnut and I cannot say enough about these, they were absolutely delicious!!  Not one thing was disappointing about this restaurant, and I will gladly be back! We visited Casellula after a few years of not going. We were glad to see it was still here but sad to notice the food model had changed and portions have become significantly smaller. We still like the experience and the great wine selection. We just wished we could go back to the old Casellula before overregulation and $15 hour bitching. I found out about this place thanks to the cast of Mean Girls the musical-- they post about it weekly and gave me serious cheese envy. We had a cheese flight (fromagère's selection), Pig's Ass sandwich, pear cider and a beer. All of the food was delicious and the staff was polite, attentive and knowledgeable. I really enjoyed my Caselulla experience. I was able to try cheeses I would have never tried myself and I liked how it came with something to pair with each of them. The fromagère was very sweet and I really liked how she explained each of the cheeses to you before you dug in... she even told you which end of the plate to start at. I can honestly say I have never been anywhere like this before. I would definitely go back again.Just a tip, not a complaint-- The location is small and it does fill up quickly so I would go as close to when it opens as possible. They opened at 5:00 and there were already about 10 people inside at 5:10. I understand why-- this place is a gem! More...

This was a very intimate spot in Hell's Kitchen for a date night. The highlight are their cheese plates. We ordered the flight of cheese that the restaurant chooses for you and pairs with a special sauce. It was amazing! The cheese tasted so fresh and we would have never thought of such pairings with the cheese. We had never even heard of some of the cheese we received. Some were from Italy, France and throughout America. We also ordered their Mac and cheese, and for the price and the portion it was not my favorite. Overall the place was clean, the staff was attentive, and ordering a flight of cheese is the reason you come here. More...

This is hands down my favorite place in the city. My fiance and I first discovered it when I was living on 57th and 9th. It's one of those places you have to get to when it first opens, as there are less than 10 tables and always a wait. The best thing about this place is the wine and cheese pairings; each waiter/waitress is responsible for knowing everything about the wine, and there is always a cheese expert on duty to help you choose. Their pairings of sauces/sides with the cheese is amazing. We've had brie with homemade peanut brittle, cheddar with pepper jelly, goat with homemade honey compote, and so on. I could eat my weight in cheese at this place if I could afford it. Their menu is limited, but delicious, and you can't miss their homemade chocolate cake, which they poor cream over at the table. Most if not all of their items are locally sourced, and they are so nice and welcoming. This is the perfect place for a romantic date night, or a night out with the girls. More...

I love wine and I love cheese. This place spoke to both of my loves. I used to throw my own wine and cheese parties so I appreciate the effort that they put into build a cheese plate to go with the tastes of the party you are with and to help you match a wine. I would prefer a slightly larger selection of wine. The food choices were good but not outstanding. Mostly for smaller groups but I came with a group of 8 and we still made it work, although we were probably at the max for this restaurant. We did not have to wait for a table, which is great because they don't take reservations. When you first look at the menu, and can be quite daunting. A lot of the cheeses and winds are very unique to this store, so you won't be able to recognize them. However, the waiters and waitresses here are amazing at giving recommendations. I simply told them what I'd like it, and they pair the cheese for us. They gave us a great selection of hard and soft cheeses, with different kinds of milk. They were very sensitive to allergies and preferences as well. I wish I could tell you what we had, but trust me when I say just trust your waiter.Overall, the place got very loud so it was difficult to hold a conversation at times, but it's a great place to bring someone if you'd like to simply have a conversation! I've been here several times. Except for the summer - when business is noticeably lighter - you typically can't get one of the few tables in this small space without a wait. I've always sat at the bar (which also fills up, btw). Because it's a small space and very busy, it's also really noisy. In nicer weather, the door is often open, however, and the super high ceiling and wall of windows on the street helps to make the noise level a little more tolerable. Service is mostly good - can be spotty. The food is tapas style, which requires frequent re-ordering through the meal and it can often be difficult to get a servers attention when it gets too busy. Also, a bar that doesn't automatically place a glass of water in front of you is a bit of a pet peeve of mine and this is one of those places... The food is really delicious, though - most of it showcasing one or more of their many cheeses. They have one of the best mac & cheeses I've had, spinach & cheese dip, burrata with roasted peppers, pulled pork sandwich with yet another melty cheese,... as far as I can tell, you can't go wrong on the menu. They also offer custom cheese and charcuterie plates, which always have some unique pairing that perfectly complements (last night they paired a blond fudge with a delicious blue cheese - incredible!). Another specialty is their wine and, with a few exceptions, they will likely be bottles you've never heard of. I'm always a little skeptical of these obscure, "curated" wine lists but, so far, I've been pleasantly surprised. I think what makes all of this work is the really cute only-in-NY, neighborhood, sophisticated-yet-cool feel of the space. In Hells Kitchen, these spots are rare. I'd recommend in a heartbeat. Would be especially good for a first date! More...

An intimate wine bar in Hell's Kitchen. Besides other small snacks, I think the best part about this wine bar is that you can have experts pair cheese and meat for the wines you're drinking. I don't quite remember what the three cheeses we ordered were because my cheese palate is quite crude, but I thought they were all excellent choices, and went well with both the wines and the meats.I think the place would be great for dates because the place is fairly small and intimate, and the dim lighting and the quiet music make for a great setting for dates. This is a fantastic date location! Great romantic, intimate restaurant for wine and cheese.I've been to Casellula twice now. The restaurant is usually pretty full, but there always seems to be at least a table or two open - especially if you come later in the night (post 8pm). Both times, I ordered cheese and meat plates with wine. The cheese plates that I had were AMAZING. They will pick cheeses for you and pair them with a sauce. Last time I went, I had a passionfruit spread with a very creamy cheese and an apple spread with another soft cheese. Each cheese costs $7 and you can order as many or as little as you want (I recommend 3-5).The restaurant can pair cheeses according to the wine choice you make. Their meat platters are pre-set with whatever they have for the evening. I would also highly recommend the Pig's Ass sandwich. The meat is extremely tender and served with the most amazing sauce. Every one we stopped into was SO disarmingly loud, we immediately walked out again. Then, we got to Casellula and it seemed open and airy and not nearly as noisy (thanks, in part, to the patio and open windows, I presume). We settled in at the bar and had a couple rounds. Our bartender, Leah, was extremely knowledgeable, friendly and gave us a lot of good recs for breweries and distilleries to check out in the area. My husband and I were really excited to dine here. I first heard about Casellula a year ago when I was unexpectedly offered the position of managing the cheese department at an independently owned natural food store. I was a foodie, but didn't have a lot of knowledge related specifically to cheese. So I had to learn fast. I bought just about every book on Amazon relating to cheese that I could find. 'Composing the Cheese Plate' (co-written by Casellula's owner and pastry chef) was by far the most fun to read. It was easy to understand, unpretentious, and had fantastic pairing suggestions and recipes. It was on my bucket list to dine at the restaurant whose book had inspired me, and we finally made it there today. Casellula did not disappoint. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, the kale salad was delicious, and the chocolate cake was to die for. But most importantly, the cheese selection was amazing and the pairings were absolutely perfect. I really appreciate that they had specific and unique pairings for each individual cheese...pairings that really complemented and brought out the flavors of the cheeses. Usually you get a cheese plate at a restaurant and they just throw a bunch of olives and cornichons and bread and crackers on the board. That can be good, but this was more intentional. Having let on that I worked with cheese, I was slightly embarrassed when my husband asked if the pointed part on the knife was just for decoration...but I guess we usually just use our fingers at home :-). Really looking forward to visiting their Pittsburgh location now. (And hopefully meeting Leigh next time since her book was such an inspiration to me). We definitely want to dive into their wine list next time when I'm not pregnant. Their wine selection is great. (We stuck to sparkling water today). So definitely dine here! You won't be disappointed. And check out the book too! More...

My friend and I were seated next to the window so we were able to do a little people watching while we waited for our food.We opted for a bottle of rosé, and our server noted that their fromager would pair the bottle with a few selections of cheese based on our preferences. Since we love *all* the cheese, we were provided with a beautiful platter of three cheeses paired with spreads and dried fruits/nuts. The most memorable to me was a brie paired with passion fruit spread ... I honestly couldn't get enough and still think about it from time to time (meaning I'll definitely be back for more). The meat platter was a great pairing, and we ended up scarfing up an order of mac and cheese along with it. Casellula is a cute place with limited seating, I swung in for a quick glass of Finca Decro Cabernet as well as a small cheese platter. What threw me was the size of the place, I can see this place getting packed out during the summer. I'm not sure if I'll be back because of the tight space More...

Worth the hype. Stopped in on a Wednesdsy night around 6:45-7pm. Place was packed. Waited around 40 mins to be seated, but while we were waiting a delightful lady helped us out with menus of wine and food. She made an awesome wine recommendation and we sipped on that while our table became available. Upon seating, we were greeted by staff. All of them were very nice and attentive. The cheese and the pairings are all so F*CKING good!!!!! The place is kind of pricey but your getting your moneys worth.. Its cheese AND wine! For 2 people, two glasses of wine each and a plate of 3 cheeses and a plate of 3 meats cost $100. Great for date night! More...

I came here as a girls night out for few glasses of wine. We ordered few plates with white wine and food was amazing. Although this place can be a bit pricey with the portion, the quality is good. But I definitely don't recommend it for larger groups because place is tiny, only thing I recommend this place is not to have tables so close up against each other. Otherwise, it's a perfect place to go for a wine for an intimate date/night.PS- desserts are also amazing! More...

Four little words: wine... cheese... chocolate cake. Conveniently located in Hell's Kitchen, down the street from where I lived. Warm service, quaint little nook, and nice ambiance. I happened to randomly find this wine bar on a Sunday night with some friends recently. It happened to be late when we walked in and weren't expecting a large crowd inside. We were greeted by Bryan/Brian who was super awesome with accommodating our group of 4, even though there were not any empty tables. We selected a bottle of garnacha from Spain based on his recommendation, which was amazing. Unfortunately a member in the group knocked over his glass and his wine spilled. Bryan was very cool about it and reassured us that it happens much more often than we think. Not only was he cool about the spill he also topped off all of our glasses from a fresh bottle. We didn't try any of the food items, but with the amazing, friendly, and humble service that was provided our group made a note to visit here again. More...

This is a gem of a place, great wine list, menu and general feel. This is a tiny place but is very urban chic. The cheese plates are delicious, we asked them to create ours for us and it was elegant and delicious. The balance of each cheese with flavors selected to complement each cheese is done with care. We also had Nonna meatball sliders, Brussels Sprouts with cacahuetes (peanuts) and crostini. All very tasty!Desserts too were so good. What a lovely little gem in an unexpected place! My friend and I parked at the bar and had a delightful time. I loved the autumn kale salad - the bacon dressing is so tasty - but the real winner here is the customer service. Jennifer behind the bar recommended some amazing wines and the truffle dessert which was an incredibly luscious end to our meal. Though most of the dining room was a bit noisy, our spot near the door was a perfect spot. Would and will return for a wine and cheese meal when in need of an oasis in Manhattan. More...

I can't say enough good things about this place. The place is small and dark, perfect for a cozy candlelit date. We went on a Friday night around 8pm, and we were lucky enough to snag a spot at the bar. We definitely came at the right time, because there was a crowd waiting for our seats as we ate. We ordered way too much food, and regretted none of it. We got cheese and meat boards that were interesting and diverse, the roasted Italian eggplant, the warm octopus salad, the mac and cheese and split a bottle of wine. The food was more than enough for dinner, and we left happy and full. Will definitely be back next time we need a quick bite before a show. More...

We also ordered the truffles for dessert which were a bit confusing as I thought there three different types of truffles.  That is not the case though only one type with all of the ingredients listed on the menu. The beer and wine selection at Casellula are amazing. If you're not too familiar with wine and cheese pairings, then you can have the staff recommend or choose for you. They have various cheese options. I definitely recommend this place for cheese and/or wine lovers. They also have delicious beers that I have not seen in other restaurants. Casellula is a great date spot since it's small and intimate and almost secluded from the bustle of Hell's Kitchen. Now onto the food. My girlfriend and I ordered the Pig's Ass sandwich, the mac & cheese, and octopus salad. The octopus salad was citrusy but lacked other flavour/seasoning. The octopus, however, was quite savoury and tender. The mac & cheese was very rich and creamy. It definitely wasn't the traditional mac & cheese using cheddar cheese. It was prepared with white cheeses like comté and fol epi. Very tasty with the pork and caramelised onions inside. The pig's ass sandwich was probably the best. It was almost like a cuban, but more refined. It was delicious and the best entree we ordered. My one complaint about Casellula was that our server was pretty rude and ignored us. He wasn't very attentive and, when we did manage to grab his attention, he acted like he didn't want to serve us when we asked for utensils and water. It definitely tainted the experience. Nonetheless, I recommend Casellula as a getaway from the overcrowded and hectic restaurants of Hell's Kitchen. The beer, wine, and food are worth it. More...

Casellula is a lovely place for some post-theater wine and cheese in Hell's Kitchen. We dropped by here after a show in Times Square for a nitecap and had a great experience! We got a wonderful bottle of Spanish wine and let our server decide which cheese would be best paired with it and she did the rest! We were good with anything as long as it wasn't too crumbly (personal preference). Our server ended up choosing three great cheeses that complemented our wine. We also got the apple cake which was amazing - just the right amount of apple and pecans. We can imagine that the wait probably goes out the door during peak times as the place is relatively small. With that in mind, it's probably better to come here with 1-3 people max as it doesn't seem like they can easily accommodate large groups (unless you're willing to wait). One of my favorite aspects of Casellula was the atmosphere! It's cozy and classy while still being fun and lively. The servers remain upbeat and nice even when the place starts to get packed. I LOVED this place. I met up with a few friends here for wine and cheese. I had a great white from Abruzzo and my friends all had really good reds. But onto the truly amazing part - their cheese pairings. We split a grand total of six cheeses and they matched each with the craziest, tastiest pairings. Most notable was the blue cheese with Nutella, another cheese with salted caramel fudge, and yet another with apple chutney and an apple chip. (I apologize for not remembering the names/types of cheeses, but they were so good I was distracted). We also had the ricotta crostini which were good. A little on the small side for what you pay, but still very good. This place is amazing! It was my first time ever going to a wine and cheese bar. My dad and I went together and had the most amazing time. It was a bit crowded when we arrived at 8:30, but we fortunately got a seat at the bar after ten minutes. The decor is adorable. The wait was worth it!! We 100% lucked out on choosing to sit at the bar. From our seats we could see the chefs on the line. In between orders, we were able to talk with Chef Jen! She was so welcoming and explained so many dishes to us. Watching her work was so much fun. Seeing her created all the dishes allowed us to see the passion and the precision they put into creating these dishes! We ordered a Spanish bottle of wine (my dad picked it out, it was absolutely delicious), a 6 piece cheese plate, and a 3 piece meat plate. We let them design both plates and I was lucky to try a variety of each. Both the meats and cheeses were EXTREMLY Fresh  The pairings were spectacular. They have a cheese and truffle pairing that is out of this world, as well as a balsamic nut pairing. I wish I wrote down the cheeses when they were first explained, but unfortunately I didn't. This was such an enjoyable evening. I cannot wait to go back with friends and family when they visit! I can easily see myself going there once a month to sit down, relax, and enjoy delicious food and wine!! Highly recommend to all!! Thanks Jen for the awesome service and delicious food! More...

Excellent cheese and win bar. If you have a special place in your heart for cheese like I do, make it a point to visit this place. They have a HUGE selection of cheese, anything you want, they have it. They have a person there (forgot the exact title of this individual) who's job is to create cheese plates with appropriate pairings. I have no idea what this person gets paid but they deserve a raise!! My cheese plate was excellent and paired perfectly with all unique things. My favorite pairing was the maple tasting one (not sure what the real name of it was) but it was paired with the blue cheese and it was sooooooooooo yummy. I also sampled some of their meats to accompany the cheese, I went with wild boar cacciatorini (which tasted like a less tasty version of hard salami) and another meat that was very similar to kielbasa. The kielbasa meat was much better than the wild boar and also was a very generous portion. It came with a great mustard dipping sauce, I would recommend trying this instead. The reason for 4 stars and not 5 is not due to the quality of the food but rather the quality of the people that work here. Casellula opened at 5Pm on the day I was there and I arrived at 4:50. It was absolutely freezing in the city this day and they wouldn't let us wait inside. Instead they said "sorry, we open in 10 minutes" and watched customers stand in the freezing cold out the window as they all stood around looking at their cell phones. They literally made us wait until exactly 5PM to let us inside. I though that was a bad look on their part. I understand you do not open until 5Pm and wont serve us until 5PM, that is all understood....but why couldn't you let us stand in your restaurant for 5-10 minutes while we waited for it to be 5? I wouldn't even expect to be seated, I just wanted to stand inside and get out of the blistering cold. I thought this was a very poor judgement call and I was not the only customer to feel this way. There were about 4 other people standing outside waiting with me who also though this was very crappy of Casellula.Casellula, treat your customers better. you have an awesome place and I would have loved to give you 5 stars but just couldn't because of how I was treated. Food was so good!! Not only did it taste good, but the presentation was nice. I was waiting for a friend at the bar, and watched the food being prepared in front of me, right behind the bar. It might sound unsanitary, but everything was clean, the food was prepared quickly, and everything looked so good. I wanted to order everything. I ended up getting the Mac and cheese as well as their version of pigs in a blanket. I split these with my friend and they were both very good and i definitely recommend them. They didn't seat me at a table since I got there a little early, and they wanted to seat me and my friend together. We ended up eating at the bar anyway, but just something to keep in mind. I was out on the list, and I was told the wait would be 30 minutes. It was also very busy. It was a regular weekday. The place is small, and since the food is good, I'm not surprised every seat was taken. If you're looking for a good wine bar in the area and you're not in a rush, check this place out! More...

This place is great! We stopped in for some wine and cheese before seeing a Broadway show on a Saturday night. They don't take reservations and your whole party needs to be there before being seated, but we lucked out and got a nice little table for four right by the window. We told our waitress we were in a bit of a hurry because of the show starting, and that we trusted her judgement to bring us a nice selection of cheeses. She recommended a great bottle of red wine, brought 5 awesome and very different cheeses out and the pairings that go with each of the cheeses was almost my favorite part...almost...We also ordered the charcuterie, which was 5 meats ranging from a pate to a chorizo. Everything was delish!! A blue cheese paired with a chocolate coconut fudge, different sheep and cow's milk cheeses, everything brought out was devoured and we got the check quickly as well and our waitress was very pleasant the whole time. I will definitely go back! More...

After Hamilton and during the blizzard, we found this cozy/cool restaurant, glowing with candlelight and windows fogged up with toasty heat. Amazing wine list, most delicious brisket in steamed buns with spicy aioli. Got to chat with charming waiter who'd seen Hamilton two times! We thought we were full, but then couldn't resist the poetry of the cheese list and had a single piece of "fudge, creamy, mushroomy" Pico Picadine goat Brie accompanied by homemade passion fruit curd. Mind blowing. More...

I love the space, but it is a bit tight. The service is excellent. If you are going to a show and are closer to this end, it's perfect for wine and small bite. We went before seeing Fun Home and it was perfect. Normally I'd try the cheese, but it was a little pricey. But the prices for the rest were on par for that area. More...

This might possibly be one of the best places I've ever eaten in New York City. And I realize that's a very bold statement.Went here recently with a couple of friends (NYC residents) before heading to see a show. Apparently this is said friends' go-to place before hitting up any show. And I can understand why.Now one of these first things you should be aware of about this place is the dining room is very, very tiny. I mean seven six-seven tables, if I recall correctly, along with a few seats at the bar. The second thing you should know is a party is not typically seated until all members of the party are there. So if you plan on meeting someone at the restaurant for a meal, just know that. Now, the food. While each of the three of us in our group ordered our own meal, we did try everything so I'm reviewing everything here first-hand. Here's what the collective group enjoyed:- Lavender truffle popcorn. Yup. If you're thinking this might just be one of the most amazing sounding things on the planet, you are SO right. It is what it is - truffle popcorn with a hint of lavender. I dream about it sometimes, y'all.- Sausages encased in dough. Think of it as a fancy pig-in-the-blanket. But oh so flavorful and tasty. I highly recommend trying this dish.- Shrimp tacos. - Mac 'n' cheese that is so deliciously cheesy you'll slap your mom. - Roast beef sammies. This was my personal dish, and I could not have been happier with my decision. The sandwich came topped with sautéed onions and lettuce, and juicy, juicy roast beef. Along with a small field greens salad with vinaigrette. I was in heaven with every bite; if I could eat this every day I totally would. One of the really unique things about this place as noted by one of my friends is that there's technically no kitchen. There's a small area located behind the bar where all of the food is prepared (by one or more chefs, I can only assume), which makes this place even more impressive to me.I'm heading back to New York a little later this year and certainly plan on making Casellula part of my agenda. A fantastic dining experience. The staff was courteous and welcoming and certainly know their way around some cheese. It is a rare thing to find a NYC dining experience that is cozy and chill and also absolutely delicious. If you love cheese and wine then high-tail it over here ASAP. This place is fantastic.  They have the most amazing pairings with their cheeses. They really are cheese experts and know their product. I've taken many people here and they've all loved it. The only downside is that it's small and since they don't take reservations you may have a decent wait for a table.  If the weather is nice you can get a glass of wine and wait outside. Enjoy!! We had a late night weekday dessert (9pm) at Casellula and fortunately there was a table for two available right away. The bacon maple ice cream for $4 was excellent and highly recommended compared to the $10 chocolate cake which was just so so. Really enjoyed the maple flavor with hearty bacon bits mixed together.  Many people come here just for the wine and cheese and elegant ambiance. More...

Went here with my girlfriend before a show. The service was prompt and friendly. They have an extensive cheese selection. We chose to go with three cheeses, we tried to pick two, and have the waitress surprise us with the third. The best cheese was the one recommended by the waitress...I kinda wish I asked her to recommend all three. We are vegetarian, and they had a decent number of options for us. We had the popcorn, the flatbread, the tacos (without shrimp), and the red velvet tiramsu for dessert. The popcorn was an interesting twist on an appetizer, but was a definite win. The flatbread was really good too. The tacos were alright, but in all fairness to the restaurant, we did ask for a modified version of them. The red velvet tiramasu was fantastic, this is something you must try if you go here. There is a red wine on their menu called Matchbox, that was also very good. I am pretty sure we ordered enough glasses to equal a bottle. More...

For an evening of wine, cheese, and charcuterie in a lovely space, you can't ask for better than Casellula. It is my favorite wine bar in the City, and it has a food menu that is equal to the quality of its wine list. I love all of the food I have tried here, and the wine choices are always extensive and excellent. I normally let the server choose my wine and cheeses, and they always do a great job of picking something that delights my palate.I especially love the combination of dark chocolate with the blue cheeses. My only suggestion for improvement is to serve more bread with the cheese and charcuterie. We had a platter full of cheese and meat, but about 5 small pieces of bread that ran out way before we had consumed the cheese and meat. For the price we paid, it certainly would not cost the restaurant much more to be more generous with the bread. If you're in Midtown or Hell's Kitchen, Casellula is a must. More...

A nice find in midtown west. The cheese and wine selection was impressive, and service was impeccable. I didn't like the pig's ass sandwich as much as everyone else -- the bread was a little too crunchy for me (felt like there was bacon on it?) But the ricotta + orange zest on toast was great, my husband loved the octopus and farro salad, and the cheddar pandowdy with apples was delicious. I'd come back for the cheese selection alone. Review for wine only! We put our names in at Totto Ramen around the corner and came to Casellula for a glass of wine. Immediately, we were greeted with super friendly service and were asked to wait by the door for the 3-person bar spot to open up. Our server was so, so nice! He was super knowledgable about the wines and made great recommendations. He also took my phone to charge behind the bar. I don't get why people say New Yorkers are rude - the service at Casellula proves that people are genuinely friendly and helpful. More...

So very good.  The crostinis, burrata, everything is so tasty.  Especially if you like cheese.  The seasonal crostinis had a heap of fresh ricotta that had the consistency of a dense whipped cream.  The honey drizzle and herbs were perfect.  The pate and marmalade wasn't impressive; my dining partners loved the pate (I don't eat meat) and I found the marmalade too bitter from the rinds. Bree burrata with pistachios and pesto was particularly good; the cheese was creamy and the pistachio was nicely sweet.  We ordered all four desserts; my favorite was the drunken grasshopper.  Nice crunchy mints in the ice cream.  The chocolate cake was really good, but I thought the poured cream on it was too much.  I will come back. Our friends recommend this spot, so after seeing Spoiled Rotten on Broadway, we walked a few short blocks to Casellula for an early, light dinner. We ordered about 7 different items, including pork's ass, which was a delicious pulled pork sandwich. The room is tiny but is made very warm with the use of exposed brick walls and great lighting. We out two small tables together so all six of us fit perfectly. We also had a fabulous custom cheese tray with perfect accompaniments. The shrimp tacos were my favorite. We shared four desserts, and loved the chocolate cake and bread pudding the best. Our waiter was great, service was at just the right pace, and the dining room is very clean. We will be back (probably even on this trip), but certainly on our next NY trip this WinterBravo and thank you for a great night! More...

Great place! We went around 8:15pm on a Tuesday night, and had a 10 minute wait to get seated at the bar then another 10 min to get a table. Staff was very friendly and accommodating.  We enjoyed the gruner veltliner and rose vinho verde, both very good; the 'Pork Slap' "farmhouse ale" (it says so on the can, though it's actually an American Ale which was ok/good. First course was the Fromager's choice 5 cheese plate; each cheese paired nicely with chocolatey bread, mango spicy mustard?, pine nut basalmic reduction, fig jam, or peanut brittle. Next was the buffalo-stuffed, pancetta?-wrapped pepperdews, a little spicy/sweet, good. Then the endive salad. A very mellow blend of flavors, the blue cheese and toasted macadamias were very tasty. Then we waited 10-15 minutes for the next course, which I didn't appreciate as I was becoming too full to finish the meal. ;)Finally the warm octopus salad came out. It wasn't my favorite but it was very well done- the octopus very tender. Last was the Pig's Ass sandwich. It was ok but nothing special. But! My taste buds were blunted and I was very full. We sat in Casellula for at least 1.5 hours, and there were tables filled prior to our arrival that were still there when we left. And again, all the staff were great!! More...

I've been craving a wine and cheese dinner for months, and Casellula has made all of my cheesy wino dreams come true. For such a compact kitchen and intimate, cozy space Casellula has a surprisingly extensive full menu. The enormous cheese selection merits a separate menu which is divided into five categories: Fresh, Bloomy and Soft-Ripened, Washed, Pressed and Cooked, Blue. We ordered wine by the glass and left our cheese fligh
