The rooms were beautiful, quite and warm but the restaurant and bar stole the spotlight. Restaurant 301 was literally the best restaurant we've eat at in the Eureka/Arcata area. The Cater House bar has the finest bourbon collection north of SF according to the manager. (A claim he made while pointing to the bottle of Pappy on the bar!) The service was also fantastic and very responsive. We had an excellent stay and will certainly return on our next trip to the area. More...

I have stayed at the Carter House Inn in Eureka about once a month over the past 18 months. The classic Victorian building is beautifully decorated and a short walk to the center of old town Eureka. The rooms are well appointed and several have fire places and nice bath tubs. The towels are luxurious. The on site restaurant, 301, serves up a delicious dinner and breakfast. The bar is always full of locals and others interested in a good drink and good conversation. The staff is welcoming and professional. I highly recommend you stay here! More...

One of my co-workers discovered this Inn after several years of field travelers, myself included, resorted to area motels. The proximity to the ocean takes its toll on every place in town and we've encountered damp squishy carpets in other hotels. Carter House is an oasis of hospitality in that foggy place. Beds are amazing, the facility is immaculate, and the food is excellent. Admittedly, they hooked me when you check in you are offered a glass of champagne or a glass of wine from the bar, just steps away. Carter house is always my first choice of places to stay in Eureka. Carter House offers everything a traveler could want. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the rooms are spacious, the beds comfortable, the linens plush and extras abound. WE were greeted by Jim who gave us a welcoming glass of champagne. There were cookies and tea waiting in the lobby which also offered a great place to relax or make new friends. Everything about the room was just what we would hope for, comfortable, spacious and clean. There is a wonderful hotel bar with a good Happy Hour, but the bar abounds in unusual alcohols including a very wide range of Scotches and wines.|We travel to Eureka a few times a year to visit family and have stayed at a lot of the other hotels and they have always been OK. Nothing to complain about and nothing to make us necessarily want to go back. Now that we've stayed at Carter House, we won't be experimenting with other inns or hotels. This is the one! More...

We arrived at this hotel in the afternoon of of a wind-related blackout. The manager made every effort to make us feel at home in spite of the power-related difficulties. We were supplied with flashlights to negotiate the hallways and given a lovely corner room with plenty if windows to take advantage of available daylight. We returned to the lobby after getting settled to find that the chef had brought some welcome and delicious cold appetizers and wine to the lobby. What a welcome!||The power was restored during the night and we appreciated the delightful hot breakfast included with our room.||Nothing sets a hotel apart more than how they manage in adverse circumstances. The Carter Hotel and its hard working staff went beyond the expected to make our experience positive. ||Lastly, the Carter Hotel is located two blocks from the waterfront park in a series of beautiful and impeccably maintained Victorian structures. The rooms are comfortable and the bathrooms are tidy, roomy and modern. More...

I’ve read some of the bad reviews for this place and just can’t figure them out. I guess everyone has a bad experience occasionally. We loved our two night stay at Carter House. We were in the main building in room 208. We loved everything about it. No, we didn’t go walking around outside at night. Yes, there are homeless folks in the historic section of Eureka. Nobody bothered us, and there were policemen in the neighborhood. The most exclusive private club in town was right at the end of the block at the Old Charter House Mansion. The bar had the best bourbon selection I’ve ever seen, and both breakfasts were excellent. We were here for the redwoods, but this inn was icing on the cake. More...

We booked the Carter House for a place to stay during a road trip from San Francisco to Portland. ||||The good: The staff was very nice and the extra touches such as champagne at check in and evening snacks (delicious cookies) was very much appreciated. The hotel is beautifully restored in restful colors and warm and inviting furniture. The bed linens, towels and robes were the softest I've ever felt and smelled wonderful. The bathroom amenities were plentiful and very nice. The hotel sits in an area with several other stunning Victorian buildings, so I enjoyed walking around and seeing all the beautiful architecture. The complimentary breakfast had some lovely pastries that we enjoyed.||||The not so good: Although the linens were soft, the bed was very uncomfortable. Lumpy with a thin mattress that has seen better days. The room was so hot! Although the outside temps were only in the mid-60's our room was 77 degrees. We were on the first floor (facing the parking lot) so we could not leave the windows open when we were out of the room or during the night while we were sleeping for safety reasons. There was a ceiling fan and a small portable fan (which we only discovered at check out) that weren't enough to cool the room. And we were not informed that there was no AC in the room, so we spent a lot of time trying to adjust the thermostat before realizing there was not AC. We liked the toast and breakfast pastries but then we also ordered a hot breakfast (also complimentary). I had eggs and bacon and my husband had the breakfast burrito. The bacon was delicious but both of our eggs were so bland and not flavorful. More...

On the plus side - best hotel breakfast anywhere, very lovely complementary wine and appetizers, friendly and attentive staff, good location. On the minus side — Eureka has a lot of street people, and our first floor room had mentally ill people screaming and yelling al night. Our room was really small and stuffy (you always get the worst room with hotels.com), and we were not comfortable opening the screen less windows with mentally ill people just outside. Also, the wine mark ups were beyond the typical doubling in price most restaurants do ($65 for a bottle that sells for $18 retail, really?) and their per-glass prices and restaurant prices are significantly higher than anywhere else in town. I would stay there again if I got a good deal on a room, but wouldn’t spend the $300+ I have sometimes seen when researching rooms in Eureka. More...
