The rooms were beautiful, quite and warm but the restaurant and bar stole the spotlight. Restaurant 301 was literally the best restaurant we've eat at in the Eureka/Arcata area. The Cater House bar has the finest bourbon collection north of SF according to the manager. (A claim he made while pointing to the bottle of Pappy on the bar!) The service was also fantastic and very responsive. We had an excellent stay and will certainly return on our next trip to the area. More...

I have stayed at the Carter House Inn in Eureka about once a month over the past 18 months. The classic Victorian building is beautifully decorated and a short walk to the center of old town Eureka. The rooms are well appointed and several have fire places and nice bath tubs. The towels are luxurious. The on site restaurant, 301, serves up a delicious dinner and breakfast. The bar is always full of locals and others interested in a good drink and good conversation. The staff is welcoming and professional. I highly recommend you stay here! More...

One of my co-workers discovered this Inn after several years of field travelers, myself included, resorted to area motels. The proximity to the ocean takes its toll on every place in town and we've encountered damp squishy carpets in other hotels. Carter House is an oasis of hospitality in that foggy place. Beds are amazing, the facility is immaculate, and the food is excellent. Admittedly, they hooked me when you check in you are offered a glass of champagne or a glass of wine from the bar, just steps away. Carter house is always my first choice of places to stay in Eureka. Carter House offers everything a traveler could want. The staff is very friendly and helpful, the rooms are spacious, the beds comfortable, the linens plush and extras abound. WE were greeted by Jim who gave us a welcoming glass of champagne. There were cookies and tea waiting in the lobby which also offered a great place to relax or make new friends. Everything about the room was just what we would hope for, comfortable, spacious and clean. There is a wonderful hotel bar with a good Happy Hour, but the bar abounds in unusual alcohols including a very wide range of Scotches and wines.|We travel to Eureka a few times a year to visit family and have stayed at a lot of the other hotels and they have always been OK. Nothing to complain about and nothing to make us necessarily want to go back. Now that we've stayed at Carter House, we won't be experimenting with other inns or hotels. This is the one! More...

We arrived at this hotel in the afternoon of of a wind-related blackout. The manager made every effort to make us feel at home in spite of the power-related difficulties. We were supplied with flashlights to negotiate the hallways and given a lovely corner room with plenty if windows to take advantage of available daylight. We returned to the lobby after getting settled to find that the chef had brought some welcome and delicious cold appetizers and wine to the lobby. What a welcome!||The power was restored during the night and we appreciated the delightful hot breakfast included with our room.||Nothing sets a hotel apart more than how they manage in adverse circumstances. The Carter Hotel and its hard working staff went beyond the expected to make our experience positive. ||Lastly, the Carter Hotel is located two blocks from the waterfront park in a series of beautiful and impeccably maintained Victorian structures. The rooms are comfortable and the bathrooms are tidy, roomy and modern. More...

I’ve read some of the bad reviews for this place and just can’t figure them out. I guess everyone has a bad experience occasionally. We loved our two night stay at Carter House. We were in the main building in room 208. We loved everything about it. No, we didn’t go walking around outside at night. Yes, there are homeless folks in the historic section of Eureka. Nobody bothered us, and there were policemen in the neighborhood. The most exclusive private club in town was right at the end of the block at the Old Charter House Mansion. The bar had the best bourbon selection I’ve ever seen, and both breakfasts were excellent. We were here for the redwoods, but this inn was icing on the cake. More...

If you are looking for a quality Inn on the Pacific NW coast of California you could do no better than stay at Carter House 301 L Street in Eureka. The Inn is a converted home oozing quality. On arrival guests are offered a glass of champagne whilst checking in and the rooms are tastefully decorated. Even the quality of the towels and linen are first class. |The Inn has a beautiful well stocked, albeit compact, bar and a first class restaurant. |Eureka itself is a fascinating coastal town with the largest selection of Victorian houses in anyone location. A must see is The Carson Mansion which is a large Victorian house located in Old Town, only 2minute walk from the Inn. Regarded as one of the highest executions of American Queen Anne Style architecture, the house is "considered the most grand Victorian home in America."| More...

We booked the Carter House for a place to stay during a road trip from San Francisco to Portland. ||||The good: The staff was very nice and the extra touches such as champagne at check in and evening snacks (delicious cookies) was very much appreciated. The hotel is beautifully restored in restful colors and warm and inviting furniture. The bed linens, towels and robes were the softest I've ever felt and smelled wonderful. The bathroom amenities were plentiful and very nice. The hotel sits in an area with several other stunning Victorian buildings, so I enjoyed walking around and seeing all the beautiful architecture. The complimentary breakfast had some lovely pastries that we enjoyed.||||The not so good: Although the linens were soft, the bed was very uncomfortable. Lumpy with a thin mattress that has seen better days. The room was so hot! Although the outside temps were only in the mid-60's our room was 77 degrees. We were on the first floor (facing the parking lot) so we could not leave the windows open when we were out of the room or during the night while we were sleeping for safety reasons. There was a ceiling fan and a small portable fan (which we only discovered at check out) that weren't enough to cool the room. And we were not informed that there was no AC in the room, so we spent a lot of time trying to adjust the thermostat before realizing there was not AC. We liked the toast and breakfast pastries but then we also ordered a hot breakfast (also complimentary). I had eggs and bacon and my husband had the breakfast burrito. The bacon was delicious but both of our eggs were so bland and not flavorful. More...

I really like the place, location, cleanliness, confort, very nice. We just had a bad experience with the server at breakfast time. We felt neglected as she took time to take our order and we had to reminder as to where it was since everyone else got served before us that got to the restaurant after us. Perhaps because we spoke Spanish within us but were clear and polite about our request. That ruined the experience.. is too bad that one person with bad attitude can ruin what could have been an excellent experience.. More...

On the plus side - best hotel breakfast anywhere, very lovely complementary wine and appetizers, friendly and attentive staff, good location. On the minus side — Eureka has a lot of street people, and our first floor room had mentally ill people screaming and yelling al night. Our room was really small and stuffy (you always get the worst room with hotels.com), and we were not comfortable opening the screen less windows with mentally ill people just outside. Also, the wine mark ups were beyond the typical doubling in price most restaurants do ($65 for a bottle that sells for $18 retail, really?) and their per-glass prices and restaurant prices are significantly higher than anywhere else in town. I would stay there again if I got a good deal on a room, but wouldn’t spend the $300+ I have sometimes seen when researching rooms in Eureka. More...

The wine and cookies were a great touch, and the lobby is beautiful. Breakfast was lovely as well. We stayed in the Carter Cottage on our third night - it is rather spacious but could use a little tlc. There was also a minor hiccup in having enough place settings for our dinner party, but anything we brought to the hotel's attention was quickly resolved. Food was delicious!...their filet was soooo tender, oysters were small, but yummy. Menu was surprisingly limited and not nearly enough seafood for its location in my opinion. But again, delicious. Service was super friendly. Kitchen had a little slower pace. My biggest issue was the atmosphere, specifically their dining room window shades. They do not adequately block the early evening sun at several of their tables towards the kitchen. We switched tables, and even positions at the second table, but still the heat (enough to get a little sunburnt) and the glare kinda killed the enjoyment of the occasion. More...

Carmen is a dream! Carmen was one of the front desk ladies who welcomed us to the carter house. She was informative, welcoming, and charming from the moment we walked in the door. Greeted with smiles and two glasses of bubbly, the crew at Carter House made us feel welcome the moment we arrived. We were considering two locations in the area on this unusually warm June day, one a large chain hotel and this lovely spot. Carter Inn was cozy and comfortable, with a cute lobby area and a cool, small bar above the reception area. Our room was small but comfortable, with soft linens and towels and a fan we placed in the window to cool down our room. We woke up rested and ready for the next phase of our journey. Each member of the team we encountered at Carter was outstanding, always asking about wants or needs, forever attentive. We couldn’t ask for a better home for the evening. More...

Our overall experience was very positive except for a few glitches in service. e.g. No new bath soap provided for day two; front desk person not very helpful in providing a town map. However, our room was very nice - large with very comfortable bed and a nice view of some beautiful old restored buildings. Walking distance to many good restaurants and the harbor area. A good choice for a Eureka visit. More...

Had a pleasant two night stay -- we had a "Really nice Queen on the 2nd floor". Very comfortable and well appointed. Appreciated the inclusive breakfast which was quite comprehensive (but you do need to ask for the menu and some items). We didn't dine in the restaurant. Decided to explore the old town the first night and then come Sunday the only offering was a fixed price 3 course menu @$60 per person (rather than a la carte) so we decided to seek elsewhere. Historic Eureka has quite a good selection of restaurant to choose from -- so no real problem. The staff were all very polite, professional and pleasant although we came away feeling that "we were lucky to stay" rather than their focus being the customer. We did have a slight issue with our room -- the hand basin (sink) wasn't draining correctly which meant that it was pretty much not usable. Reported this just after we checked in but nothing happened. Come Sunday we were then advised that they were aware of the problem but couldn't resolve until Monday after we had checked out. So -- 2 thoughts here. Either give us a different room from the start or at least flag it as an issue so that we were aware. Bottom line would recommend -- classy and elegant but be prepared to pay for the high quality food and wine -- rating $$$$. More...

Our room was on the ground floor and looked out onto the parking lot, but as dog owners we’re generally happy to take what we can get. Checked in for a couple of nights while we visited the redwood national park and straight away we were impressed by the service, I didn’t get the name of the 2 who checked us in but they were great. Helped in with the cases (sorry they were so heavy!)|A genuine warm welcome with champagne and complimentary canapés. |There was some confusion on the rooms but fixed quickly and after a plumbing issue (it’s Victorian, these things happen) we ended up in room 306 on the 3rd floor.||Nice and quiet during the day but really hot and noisy in the evening with restaurant guests chatting in the car park and then driving off. We left the windows open all day and had the ceiling fan on to cool down, it seems there was a fault with the heating as it was on the whole time we were there even though the thermostat was off - advised on checkout so they could get fixed. It got roasting in the room and that can’t have helped.||Bed was quite small, it was described as a queen but seemed smaller (possibly as we’re used to a king). Nice sheets and plenty of pillows and cushions for watching TV. First hotel in the US with decent lighting!! Top marks for that.|Wardrobe handles rattled whenever anyone walked past in the hall - pull them up to keep them quiet! ||Bathroom was clean, nice selection of complimentary toiletries and robes. ||Complimentary breakfast both days was nice if not a little slow, could do with a second server when it’s getting busy as the poor girl was struggling to keep up. Also it might be worth adding the hot food to the menu? I struggled to put together a breakfast just by having the options dictated to me. |The buffet area was a little cramped and there’s only 1 toaster which when ordering poached eggs on toast doesn’t help with getting both toast & eggs hot. We did the toast early to beat the queue and ended up with cold toast and hot eggs. Why not cook it in the kitchen with the eggs? |Eggs were perfect, sausage links were quite peppery but the bacon was great. Just need the toaster situation sorting.||Checked out and I don’t know who the receptionist was but different person to check in and just plain rude. Completely disinterested in our stay and just handed me a receipt, I advised of the faulty heater and she just about managed to thank me for bringing it to her attention - very poor service and attitude, maybe just a bad day but it impacted on our stay.||Overall I’d happily return again if in the area and would recommend a visit but just a few issues stopping me giving it a 5* review. Plenty of parking near the hotel. Checked in and was offered our choice of wine and both the chardonnay and malbec were pretty exceptional. We opted for dinner at the hotel, which was also delicious. My boyfriend ordered the steak and I ordered the fish. Dessert was amazing and the bar graciously provided me with a candle and a lighter to use for his birthday dessert in our room. Everything was clean, the bathroom was spotless, the in-room basket had a nice selection of goodies and relevant, local items such as chocolate, wine, and a hiking guide. Staying here was a highlight of our trip. Every detail was well-thought out, including the assortment of fruits, chocolate-covered strawberries, cookies, etc in the lobby. The front desk person was very friendly and offered us champagne upon our arrival. The bathroom was very nice, although the separate hot and cold faucets on the pedestal sink were less than practical. My one complaint is that they did not tell us that breakfast was included. Usually when you stay at a hotel, they are explicit about whether or not breakfast is offered, especially if it is complimentary. We had recently had good experience staying at another Unique Inn, so we elected to stay here. We stayed in the original Carter House portion of the hotel, in a room which was advertised as having steps, but when we arrived it was clear that there would be too many steps for my wife, who has severe arthritis. Heidi, who was on the desk, made special arrangements so we could enter our suite through another, unused guest room room that would allow us to to avoid the stairs, forfeiting the income from that room for the two days we were there. This is a charming, comfortable place to stay, and this extra-mile thoughtful service left a real impression on us. We also love how convenient Carter House is to Eureka's charming old town. Arrived at 4:30 after driving through rain, got settled in and around 5 was sitting in front of a wood fire, with welcoming Pinot noir and excellent nibbles, starting evening crossword, and thinking who needs to have billions, this is as good as it gets. Later, meal in first class restaurant, comfortable room, and great breakfast. Friendly people, excellent value. More...

Wish they had let us know at booking that the restaurant was closed for remodel and that our room would be in a new building across the street from the Victorian house. That said, the staff was friendly and helpful, the architecture lovely - old world elegance combined with modern simplicity, and the best sheets ever. The cozy bar, library, and the fireplace in the lobby were fantastic. Unfortunately the room was hot and tons of hotel and street noise. White sound machines should be provided, until then, bring your own. More...

Our first visit to Eureka. It's a lovely inn. We had to walk upstairs to our room because the elevator was broken. The room was comfortable although the heat was on high when we checked in. At night we opened the windows and turned on the ceiling fan in addition to a small room fan. The second night it cooled down and was much better. ||We had a very good dining experience at dinner. The bartender was good and made excellent cocktails! ||Breakfast needs attention. I suggest people get to the breakfast room early. The first morning they ran out of fresh orange juice by 8:30. We were fine with water but had to ask for it four times. That morning I ordered the special which included eggs, waffles and a side of bacon. The server didn't bring the waffles that came with the special. I told her to forget bringing the waffles as I had some delicious pastries from the breakfast bar. The second morning we arrived at 9:30 but they had already run out of all the fresh homemade pastries. There were only crumbs left on the breakfast bar. Fortunately they quickly made some fresh scones which were delicious! The rest of the meal was very good. Unfortunately the coffee was weak and the self-serve thermos ran out quickly. I would have expected more for a high end property. More...

First, I would like to commend the Carter House organization. From the front desk to the bartender to the excellent service and food at dinner and breakfast, this is a top notch organization which I would highly recommend. ||||We stayed two nights in the Carter cottage this May. The cottage is large, with a dining/living room/kitchen space complete with gas fireplace, a small bathroom (toilet and sink) which comes in handy and a master bedroom suite with fireplace and master bathroom. ||||The dining/living room/kitchen space was extremely comfortable. The master bedroom was also comfortable, with the fireplace and a great bed. ||||The master bathroom seems to have been designed for looks rather than practicality. First, it has glass doors so you can see right into the toilet area. There are very flimsy curtains but, although they look great, they don't really give much privacy as they still leave gaps (we untied them, still gaps). Second, there is a pedestal sink and very little counter space. Third, a spa bathtub has been combined with a shower - so that you can't really comfortably shower because the spa "arm rests" interfere with where you need to put your feet. (Also, in our case, a window had been left open over the shower which caused the room to be freezing but I suspect that is unusual).||||That said, we got around everything but the shower issue because we did have that second bathroom which, although it didn't look like much, had privacy and lots of counter space. ||||Overall, I would stay at this cottage again. My husband would not. More...

We booked here at the last minute as a result of having to change our plans. We booked one of their standard Queen rooms and it was lovely. First, we were greeted with glasses of champagne, what could be bad about that. The room was quite spacious with a lovely bathroom, comfortable bad, and all the basic hotel amenities. We were a little concerted when we first checked in because we were on the first floor close to the lobby and bar, but they close a door at the end of the hall at night and there was really no issue with the noise. Breakfast was delicious with lost of options, although another server would have been helpful. Definitely a place we would go back to. More...

Our road trip brought us to Eureka. And if we were going to stay here, I wanted a place that would be unique. The Carter House Inns are just that! And they are dog friendly! We had options of where to stay and I reserved the Library Suite, which is a two room suite with a king bed in one room and a queen in the other. There was a cushy window seat in the large room, and a small couch in the other with a coffee table.||||The bathroom...large...huge even! Whirlpool tub, double head shower and two sinks. There's also a small room next to the bathroom that had a Keurig machine. Two flat screen tvs, and some antique furniture. I normally book rooms just to sleep in, but this suite, I wanted to stay in. We ordered pizza and just relaxed. Since we were in the original Carter B&B, there were other guests inside as well.||||Large common area on the 2nd floor, and a kitchen we could use on our floor. Breakfast at the hotel was included. I would have to agree that they could use two other people when the guests are eating. It just makes for a better dining experience. Since Cako is with us, we took turns going down for breakfast. I had to sit in the only clean table in the corner which was fine. Freshly baked fruit pastry, coffee and fruit to start, and then scrambled eggs, ham and potatoes. What a great start of the day! ||||Everyone on the staff was so friendly! There was even a small welcome for Cako! I seriously wished we were staying one more night! But if our travels ever bring us up this way, even if it's out of our way, I'd definitely stay here again! And Cako Approves! More...

Each time we stay at Carter house we are more amazed! The young people who work there are an incredible team from service and friendliness to thinking of every detail. I’m always wondering how they must be interviewed to get such amazing staff. Our dinner was 5 star plus after wine at the bar with Christina who was so kind. The breakfasts are so good and complimentary. There is always a new young courteous server who makes it even more enjoyable. We never stay anywhere but Carter house in Eureka. Stayed in a queen room on the main floor for one night. A very pleasant stay. The room was spacious and comfortable. One chair and a desk chair so not a place I would hang out in for a long period. Everything worked, the furnishing were pleasant, and the bathroom was well laid out. The check in and out was very efficient. The breakfast was a bit better than average and you didn't feel crowded in. There was wine tasting in the lobby in the evening which we missed. The sitting area had limited space and not a space I would have enjoyed reading in or sitting around in. Parking was ample. Our room faced out onto L Street and we didn't experience much noise from the outside. We had small kids above us and you could hear the running and voices from their room but it subsided before we went to bed. Would probably try one of the adjoining properties if I stayed again. My wife and I stayed here as we were traveling up the coast to Oregon. Really beautiful little hotel, we were both so happy we stayed here. All the staff we met were very welcoming and really went out of their way to make us comfortable. We were offered a complimentary glass of champagne as soon as we walked in the door, our room was cozy and clean, and we loved relaxing in front of the fire in the lobby. The bartender Christina was great, and so was our server but I don't remember her name. We stayed for one night in a ground floor of the Carter House. The room and bathroom were spacious and very nice. The robes in the bathroom were a nice touch. The staff were amazing and the included breakfast was delicious. The only reason for not giving it 5 stars (which the house and hotel itself would rate) was the large number of homeless people in the town of Eureka. We walked to dinner and had a nice meal at an Italian restaurant a few blocks away and walking back encountered a large number of homeless people and there were several abandoned buildings. I hope the town does something to remedy these problems and encourages more businesses to move in so there will be more things to do. More...
