What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
The secret to taking a great photo is making your client comfortable and feeling confident. The creativity of poses, lighting, and perspective tends to come natural, but a photo will never come out well if the client isn't enjoying themselves.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
I always ask a client to send me any pictures they may have seen and would like to re-enact. It's very important for me to get an idea of the style of my client and seeing their reference photos helps to ensure that their pictures will be just what they wanted. On the day of the photoshoot, I make sure every client knows that if they are self conscious about a body part or if a certain pose makes them uncomfortable to let me know and we will steer clear of it.
What do you love most about your job?
I truly love every aspect of my job. I love meeting new people, laughing with my clients while we have a great time shooting, getting to know who my clients are and helping bring their personalities out through their photos, editing the photos, and the best part... the big reveal! I love showing my clients their finished project. Each client is mailed a book with all their photos along with a thumb drive with all the digital copies. I often find myself smiling as I look back through my photos, because I know how happy my clients will be once they see the final outcome.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I started photography my senior year of high school. I focused on black and white film and how to print my own photos. After that I went to study photography a bit more in college, experimenting with digital and getting a good grasp on the art. But my true love for photography and want to start my own business started when I worked for a non profit in Washington DC. The non profit I worked for helped teen parents get the support they needed to graduate from college. It was my job to photograph them and talk to them about their journey. I loved picking new places in the city too bring the individual to life, to help tell their story to the world through photography, and to show to the world all the beauty these young parents held. I wanted to do it everyday and loved every single second of it.
