I wanted to give a solid 5 stars to Matt Smith over at Bodysmith Performance. After my very first session my core strength improved and my back pain immediately went away. Matt really knows how to customize workouts for what your body needs, even down to basic fundamentals such as how to breathe properly. Couldn't recommend him any any higher! More...

Matt is one of the most dedicated and hard-working trainer I have come across. He has been instrumental in my strength training progress. If you asked me a couple years ago that, I would be dead lifting above 300 pounds, I would never had believed. Matt not only tailored a program for my individual goals and needs but also helped me overcome my mental barrier that I had with lifting. Matt’s training style is definitely a good balance of understanding your body goals and ensuring you are always progressing. Matt knowledge about strength training and body mobility is very thorough and I have benefited a lot having him as my strength training coach. More...

There are not enough good things that I can say about Matt!Let me start by saying I am NOT the ideal customer.  I have had two back surgeries, genetic issues with my knees, shoulder and ankle issues... Basically I'm a mess!  AND that is exactly why I choose to train with Matt.  When I was looking for a trainer I needed to make sure the trainer had a background in Physical Therapy/Rehab and it was also important that my trainer was  a trainer full time.  Not to offend those trainers whom hold down a full time "regular job" and also train for extra money, but I wanted someone dedicated to his/her craft.I was not disappointing after starting to work with Matt.  Our initial consultation focused on range of motion and goal setting.  We progressed gradually the first few sessions focusing on activated core breathing, something extremely important to preventing injury and having good form as I learned in my many physical therapy stints and reinforced by Matt.  After getting into the flow and habit in the gym Matt began to push me harder responsibly testing my boundaries.  Keep in mind it had been a good decade since I've been to the gym, and even then I never loved it.   Being as stubborn as I am, Matt continually had to find new ways to get through to me and keep me interested.  He was always up to the challenge!I've taken a new position at work which has taken all my free time and then some, but prior to moving to this new position and taking a hiatus from training with Matt he put my needs in front of his and worked up a couple programs I can do in a hotel, and body weight exercises I could do anywhere.  I cant wait for things to settle back down so I can begin training with him again!  He is a stand up guy that cares about those he is training first and foremost. Matt's great--he's always been really patient and encouraging, which I really needed since I'd never been in any sort of gym routine. He holds you accountable but is also very understanding and flexible, and his kind example has inspired me to stick with this fitness journey longer than I ever would on my own. I appreciate him so much that I'm continuing on with him remotely even after I moved out of state--he's the best. More...

Matt is a phenomenal trainer and great guy. Before working with Matt, I had ongoing shoulder and neck pain from training on my own. Physical therapy provided some relief, but didn't solve the problem. Based on the initial consultation, and ongoing evaluations as I progressed in training, Matt totally corrected my form and mobility and I'm now, very thankfully, able to train pain free. Along with proper programming, this has translated into moving more weight and better body comp. Matt's extremely knowledgable, and super easy to work with. Highly recommend! More...

Matt is honestly the best there is. I found him in search of a powerlifting coach after doing CrossFit for a couple of months. I had just had a back injury and couldn't deadlift or squat (and had gotten injured in the first place from bad form).Matt took the time and attention to teach me everything I needed from breathing exercises, proper cues, and helped me dial in my form enough to see a HUGE boost in my strength. It was pretty cool going from being unable to bend down to tie my shoes to deadlifting 209 lbs at my second powerlifting meet within a matter of 7 months.I really feel like Matt genuinely cares about each and every one of his clients and creates customized programming based on your goals (and if you don't have any of those, he can help you with that too).I recommend him to everyone I know who's looking for a trainer - super smart and great to work with. Working out with Matt has taken my exercise regimen to new heights. Above all else, he's a super nice guy and knows exactly how to motivate someone based on their personality type - whether it be laid back or intense. He taught me proper form, taught me the value of leg training AND added 50 lbs to my bench press, getting me to 3-plates. Matt's use of excel spread sheet programs with built-in equations allows for safe weight and rep increases. His knowledge of personal training and health is really good. My physical therapist gave me a bunch of workouts to do for a pre-existing back injury and they were literally the same as the ones matt gave me. He knows his stuff well beyond weights and programs.I highly recommend setting up an appointment. More...

I was working out pretty consistently for a couple of years before I started training with Matt but never saw that much progress. Matt put on his "Fast Gain" program, which is a powerlifting based training plan. And then miracle happened. The first 6 weeks on this program, I gained about 8 pounds of pure muscle while lowered my body fat at the same time. Within a few months, I almost doubled the weight of what I started doing on Bench, Squat and Deadlift. All the friends who had not seen me for a while were all like what the hell happened to you when seeing me again. I have never felt so strong and confident about my body figure in my life. Although I do not train with Matt anymore these days after I moved away from Center City, I still use "Fast Gain" as the basis of my training and I am still seeing progress. This program is great if you want to build your strength and muscle or if you want to get into the world of power lifting even without any experience. I would recommend Matt to anyone who is trying to get a bit serious about working out, no matter what your goal is.Oh and did I mention Matt is an awesome and fun person? More...

What can I say about Matt that hasn't already been said? After a few months of training I was the strongest I had ever been in my life. I was stuck on bench press, so he dropped the weight, taught me proper form and now I'm lifting more than I ever thought I could. More important than that, he taught me the value of working my legs and completely changed the way I think about exercise. His Fast Gains program prepared me incredibly well for anything I want to do in the future. His focus on learning proper form has definitely saved me from injury. He really knows how to customize your programming and movements to your goals, skill level, and body typeBut for me, the best part about training with Matt is his attitude and demeanor. Super nice guy, not too pushy, not a pushover, easy to work with it, all that good stuff. I highly recommend him. More...

I loved going here. Only canceled because I am moving to another part of the city. The manager Jim and the employees are very friendly and nice. Some of the equipment is dated but that did not bother me and never got in the way of my workout. Come to think of it, the equipment always worked and never had the "being repaired" sign which is not what I can say for more updated gyms I've been to (cough cough -la fitness). I originally thought I would not like the sectioned layout but I ended up loving it. Really gonna miss this gym! More...

Decent gym, friendly people, up to date equipment, excellent personal trainers. The new pool is great. If you are going to a gym for therapy or have any serious physical difficulties this is NOT the place to check out. More...

This gym does the job. There is a mix of old and newer equipment. If you don't mind a bit of an older feel and some grit to your workout, then this is the place to be. I moved to S. 12th Street last year and was searching for a gym nearby. I mostly use free weights and prefer to work out alone. Although I was a little skeptical of the gym's layout, I gave it a shot as it was affordable and close by. I had nothing but good experiences at this gym. There's an upper level that is less crowded during peak times, though I usually tried to work out in the morning or late evenings. The hours were convenient and the staff is friendly. No pressure to utilize personal training. Like all gyms (imo), there could be more weights. But there were a few weight areas and this gym is not over-saturated with treadmills and useless machines. I'd recommend it to anyone living in the area. More...

I moved to Philly in May of 2016 for residency and really wanted to find a trainer to bring my workouts to a higher level, help me obtain real results, all while being flexible with my crazy work schedule. Matt went above and beyond this - he is friendly, nonjudgmental, easy to talk to, all while helping me build a strong foundation centered around correct technique with results that last. Cannot recommend him enough. In addition to obtaining noticeable changes in my physique, he is the only trainer I have had to bring my strength training to the next level centered around key fundamentals, giving me all the tools needed to make weight lifting a lifelong activity More...

Matt is in incredible trainer! I started working with him at 12th Street Gym while I was studying for the bar exam. I had little to no practical experience - I usually just headed straight for the machines once I got to the gym. Matt did a great job of teaching me how to get more comfortable with a lot of the basic moves. I can honestly say I never thought I'd be comfortable walking into a gym and heading to the squat rack, but after working with Matt I'm more confident. I'm no longer a client because of the closure of 12th Street Gym, but I would still highly recommend Matt to anyone who is looking to get a better understanding of how to maximize a workout and get stronger in the process.I can't recommend Matt highly enough! I started training with Matt early in 2016 after many years of working out in the gym by myself on and off. I never "hated" working out, but I also never thought I'd be someone who would end up at the gym 3-4 times a week! Matt helped me find my love of powerlifting and weight training with free weights. Before I met Matt, I was interested in the idea of lifting but was scared away by the idea of getting injured (as well as anxiety about cluelessly lifting in the free weight section). Matt goes above and beyond to teach you the CORRECT technique and movements to make sure you stay healthy to avoid injury. He takes his work home and does extensive research to make sure he is writing the best programs for his clients per their needs.Matt is a great trainer no matter what age or skill level you are at. You will walk away with invaluable skills and knowledge, as well as a better understanding of how your body can move. More...

This is a very comfortable place to work out. I hate normal gyms where everything is in one large room. There many smaller rooms with a variety of equipment in each room. Cross Fit Love is more than just a gym it is a community. I started at Love when I moved to Philadelphia by taking advantage of a 6 week female only "Love Basics" program they were offering. After the program ended I registered as a member because I realized how much I enjoyed having a planned out workout to share with a great support system. The team their is extremely passionate and patient. They help you achieve your goals and are approaching fitness from all angles by offering not only exercise but nutrition and physical therapy help as well. It is a one stop shop for a healthier lifestyle.

After acclimating to Philadelphia more I realized there were other gyms I could join that were closer to my house. But at that point Love had sucked me in, and I couldn't see leaving such a great group of people that I look forward to spending time with each week. Weather you are new to cross fit or have been practicing for a long time, you should definitely check out Cross Fit Love, you won't regret it!

Crossfit love is full of great coaches and people. I started off with the Love Basics program which helped ease my transition into the regular crossfit classes. In the basic classes, you learn how to properly perform squats, deadlifts, and presses. The coaches do a great job in the basic classes on making the exercise scaled to your current level of functioning. Taking the basic class has increased my confidence in my own abilities which has given me the opportunity to dive right in to the regular classes feeling like I belong. More...

I first met Matt back in 2015 through a common friend. And after just a brief conversation, he was already giving me tips on my diet and suggested that I try training with him. Initially I thought that he was just another personal trainer trying to get clients( and to add to that I was super lazy too lol). But Matt didn't stop trying to convince me and a whole year later in June of 2016 I finally gave in and I'm so glad I did. In just a year of training twice a week with Matt, I lost over 35lbs and gained a lot of muscle. I was stronger than I ever was. He helped me understand how each exercise works, how my body would react and change depending on the different workouts and diet. He even made me a workout plan, so I could continue to exercise when he's not around. Even after I stopped training with him, he continued to keep an eye on my progress and was available whenever I needed any tips and still continues to do so. He still checks on me if I'm working out and eating right or not. In other words he's my mom lol. Thanks to him I was able to fit into a slim fit jeans for the first time (proud moment of my life lol). I still get compliments on my weight loss. He's not only my trainer but am proud to call him a friend as well. I highly recommend training with Matt regardless of whatever your fitness goals are. He's the best. I've been a member to this gym for several years now and I cannot imagine joining a different gym. Unlike many other gyms, 12th Street offers a huge number of group classes and they are always free. It is one of the few gyms in the city that has a pool which is a great option for exercising or just relaxing. The sun deck provides a nice place to get some sun without having to be a little awkward by sitting in Washington Square in your bathing suit. The clientele is diverse, so there are nice people to look at but you don't feel intimidated because there are lots of regular folks of all shapes and ages. 12th Street is ALWAYS doing something to improve the member's experience. They seem to constantly be renovating some part of the building to offer something new or better utilize the space. New equipment and programs are always being added. However, my favorite part of the 12th Street Gym is matter of personal preference. I really like how the gym is divided up into many smaller rooms. While the layout of the space is a little confusing at first it is really nice to be in smaller, exercise-specific areas. It makes me feel less intimidated. I personally don't know why anyone likes those single large room gyms. 12th Street is cozy and makes me feel comfortable about exercising. All gym memberships are pricey, at least with the 12th Street Gym, you get a great value for your money. They gym is clean, smells good, and the staff (especially the front desk) are extremely friendly. More...

The author of the two critical reviews below was asked to leave 12th Street Gym after harassing both customers and instructors. He frequently sat in the rear of Spinner Bike Cycling classes and commented on instructor and participant performance while making notes. It was clear that his motives were a mix of attention-getting and control. At first management attempted to be supportive and responsive to the issues he raised but, after careful consideration of his input, it became clear that his true intent was simply disruption. After numerous member complaints, his membership was cancelled and his membership payment refunded. 12th Street pays very close attention to safety in all aspects of its operation and has Spinner Bike Cycling instructors well-known for their competence throughout Center City. I've been a member here for a long time. A lot of other gyms have opened and some have closed but these folks keep making the place better. Really like the many services in the same buildling and a very cool class choices. Only sun deck I can find at a gym and maybe it's my ""thing"" but the place is truly clean. I went to the Sporting Club twice ona free pass--it was not nearly as clean. Can't beat it even if it did cost more. More...

I'm not a gym person AT ALL, but I love 12th Street Gym. It's my first gym after college, and it couldn't be more convenient to my neighborhood and my job. It's right in the middle of Midtown Village, so it's walkable from pretty much every Center City neighborhood. Now, onto the actual gym - I have NEVER had any problem with the staff. They are always friendly and quick to help. The equipment is easy to locate despite the ""maze like"" atmosphere so many have described, b/c everything is well-marked. If you don't know where something is, just ask! They don't bite. Classes are awesome, as someone mentioned- Stacey's tae bo is great, and so is the yoga. As an avid yoga person, I feel really challenged here on top of not being judged. Some yoga studios I've gone too felt really competitive, but this is definitely not the case. And let's not forget - THE PRICE. Even though I live nearby, I did shop around for a bit. The price here just could not be beat by any other gym. More...

It has potential to be amazing. I think the management could be slightly more accommodating to the staff and moral would raise. Then the place would be magnificent. The equipment is great, staff is friendly and the classes are fab! More...

I've been a member at 12th Street forever. If you're into aerobics this is the place. NO other gym in the City can compete with the variety and excellence of every class. The instructors are all phenominal, especially Stacey who teaches the Tai Bo Classes. The dance classes also are amazing especially the ones taught by Stepp and Antonio. This place is more than a regular gym. It makes working out fun and the atmosphere is great. More...

Pros: I've been a member of the 12th St. Gym for about a month now, and I've found the variety and quality of the classes to be excellent. Taebo with Stacey is extremely challenging, but she uses good music that helps pull you through. Daria's 12th Street Sculpt class is also tough - your arms and legs will be shaking - and worth the time. Lindsay and Chuck both offer interesting yoga classes, and I plan to try some of the other instructors. Cons: The layout of the gym is cramped and confusing, and the temperature often seems too warm and humid. Even though I'm a swimmer, I don't anticipate ever using the (small) pool, as swimming such tiny laps would just be frustrating. But if you're interested in some really great classes, friendly staff, and available equipment (after the 5-7pm rush), it's a great value for the price. More...

I came as a guest of a friend. She told me you absolutely have to take Taebo, it just like the video and them some, plus Stacey is insane. I've figured I've taken kickboxing before, so whats the big deal, i know what to do, but I was WRONG. My friend is right Stacy is INSANE!!! She trains with Billy blanks and her classes have humbled me.. I have NEVER have cardio like that...plus the music ROCKS!! I'm a convert, I love Taebo!! The gym is cool, they have WiFi and a lounge, steam weights...I like that it's clean also. More...

I joined 12th Street Gym a year ago when I moved to Philadelphia; I was trying to get in shape for my wedding & drop a few pounds - they are known throughout the area for good classes, which is what I was looking for - I easily surpassed by goal weight by doing a combination of 12th street's aerobics, yoga & pilates classes, as well as cardio & weight training - they have a great variety of equipment and facilities, including a sun deck, pool, and raquet ball courts. The instructors are great & will kick your butt. Classes are well scheduled to accomodate work - they have early am, lunch time and evening classes, and the gym is open from 5:30am to 11pm on weekdays. Most classes are 45 minutes to 1 hour, but they also have a few 20 minute abs classes that are a perfect add-on to a workout. Cardio studios don't have a lot in the way of A/V equipment - it's better if you have your own ipod or similar. This gym is also a great deal - roughly $500/year, including all classes. They also have a tanning salon and chiropractor in-house.PROS: Great value, good facilities
CONS: Limited A/V equipment

I really like 12th Street Gym. Iliked it Better when "Sister's In Shape" was there, but now, they have their own gym. 12th Street Gym doesn't necessarily have state-of-the-art equiptment and the upstairs area is like a maze, but overall, it's a good gym.

I have been a member of this gym for almost 10 years. The facility is sparkling, the staff are wonderful and the trainers are extremely well educated and always available. Avoid the crunch right after 5 p.m. as it gets too crowded for me...the hours are excellent and the gym can't be beat for value. More...

I joined 12th St for the excellent value it offers. While being among the more affordable gyms they offer basketball, steambath, pool, and tons of free weights and cardio equipment. They have a wide range of classes as well. It's locale makes it easy to get to and is a half block off a PAtco stop (for those who utilize Philly's underground in inclimate weather.) More...
