Okay, to be honest, I don't drink coffee.  I can't drink coffee because of my stomach ulcers, unfortunately, so I've avoided this place for years despite how delicious it always smells when I'm waiting outside in line to get into the movie theatre. But it's very cold in the theatre and I was there for a film festival, stuck in that drafty old building for hours.  So I came here in search of the largest hot chocolate I could find to warm myself up.Maybe I was just freezing and starving but it was the best hot chocolate I've ever had in my life.  It's so thick and creamy and perfectly sweet.  I had to pause when I took my first sip because I wasn't expecting it to be as good as it was.  I finished it way too fast and had to restrain myself from immediately going back for a second one.  I think I'll have to get one every cold day or night I see a movie next door now. I was searching for a web designer to redesign my employer's (Maemura & Co., CPAs LLP) website. After contacting a few local designer's we decided on Bay Area Web Solutions for several reasons. The owner/designer, Jason was quick at responding when I inquired, his portfolio of work presented professionalism and creativity and he provided web hosting. When I asked if I can contact a few of his referrals, he was quick at providing them. His referral had nothing but positive things to say so we decided to work with BAWS. Myself and the office manager met with Jason, and showed him a few examples of websites that we liked and the projected timeline. The day after, he provided a written proposal and scope of work. Jason was a pleasure to work with, he was responsive, attentive and went above and beyond for us. He went as far as calling our former web hosting site when issues arise. Jason build out our new website in 4 weeks time, and it went live another 4 weeks later. If you're looking for a great local and transparent web designer, I highly recommend Jason of BAWS. We loved our new website! Thanks so much, Jason! More...

Have been working with Jason the last couple of months and the experience has been outstanding! Turned to Jason after an initial effort to launch our company website that went haywire with a highly-rated web design freelancer, who looked good on paper but lacked the chops to deliver. In our case, we had some design specs for the website and let Jason know our requirements.Jason stepped up to deliver the launch quality version under very compressed schedule and did a superb job. His domain knowledge on site hosting is commendable and can be relied on without any doubt. Not only that, the maintenance support post-launch has been exceptional and glad we went with Jason for the company website. Thank you Jason for all that you do! More...

Tonight I decided to leave my habitation(habitual abode)(home). OMG was that like ALGEBRA? ()()()()() Anyway, I decided on the Castro for my destination away from home. I decided to take a stroll and get to Castro Street and see what I could snack on. I decided to visit a cafe called the Castro Coffee Co. There was a nice family feel with an older guy helping to serve. I decided to try the empanadas. They had a whole stash with three flavors. I decided to get the beef empanada over chicken and spinach. They said that they make the empanadas from scratch and they could heat them up. I thought $4.50 was a good price. I really needed a snack outside of the house and to get out in San Francisco(I realized I don't live in North Dakota or LLBean USA or Takoma, Washington. I realized I could be in the Castro district and be around the nightlife..except there was a weirdo shouting in protest with a megaphone. It's like New Orleans or something. Well, home is where the heart is. I love you Castro! Then I had a snack at Hot Cookie and it was pretty funny. Titty funny. Good night San Francisco. It's only 9:45. Castro Coffee Company is the ultimate in neighborhood businesses. The owner, Ken, has been there for decades and has been more than very supportive of the community. Just stand in the shop a moment, breathe in that rich coffee aroma, and watch & listen. You will see the endless stream of neighbors as they come in for coffee and such. They are warmly greeted by staff that know them, and important parts of their lives, and share a caring moment with them as coffee is prepared to order. It's heartwarming to be among friends when I'm there, and to catch up on some of the highlights of the neighborhood happenings.Ken has curated a menu of something for everybody... a palette of rich coffees, sweet treats, savory scones, and wholesome cookies. You can grab something on the go, or sit in the sunshine outside and people-watch.In these days of chain store invasion to neighborhoods around town, The Castro Coffee Company is one of the last true bastions of hometown merchants. literally a mom-and-pop shop. Now, with the addition of their al fresco seating, Castro Coffee has a place to make a pit stop, enjoy a cup, and catch up with a passing friend or two. I love to sit there, look around and reminisce about the neighborhood and all the history, culture, and community we have experienced there.Thank you Ken, Abeer, Dalia, Ray, and everybody at Castro Coffee Company, for creating and maintaining a community meeting place for so long! I've never gotten coffee here. Unbelievable, I know. After all, I've bought the chocolate-dipped appendage on a stick that I lustfully yet respectfully dubbed Mandingo at Hot Cookie, wolfed down the overaccessorized wieners at Dapper Dog, and attended the most essential sing-alongs at the Castro Theater. Besides, I'm a Philz guy who becomes a creature of redundant habits. But I had never been here until I found myself in the Castro early on a weekday morning with a few minutes to spare before a medical appointment up the street. What deterred me is the claustrophobic space and the number of tourists and regulars who venture in but don't seem to come out. On this particular morning, it was almost empty which allowed me to get a pleasing 20-ounce cup of the Hawaiian Royal Kona coffee for just $2.15 (photo: bit.ly/2PJ1Nsg). It gave me a gulp of the tropics before my EKG and motivated me to come back to buy a bag of their beans. They spotlighted at least five different types that morning which I presume they rotate. I was just thinking how good a cup of the Geisha Esmeralda would go with a Mandingo.COFFEE - 4 stars...smooth richness with a different flavorAMBIANCE - 3.5 stars...still feels tight in here but I can bear it nowSERVICE - 4 stars...awfully nice considering how long they must be in there every dayTOTAL - 4 stars...indie coffee that worked for meRELATED - Hanging around in the Castro? Exceptionally good coffee, exceptional price. Many whole bean options (I grind fresh at home each day), and REAL authentic light roasts. If you are a real fan of light only, you know how medium is often passed off as light. These beans here are visible and on display when you choose. Most prices are in the low to mid teens per pound, for a real, actual 16 ounce pound. Whereas other high end roasts are 10-12 ounces, and are priced anywhere from $16 to over $20....If you have a cup of brew from the store, it is not an individual pour over made for you, it's from a pump canister. THAT SAID (because you know this could be not so great, in all reality), yesterday I went in for the 1st time ever, at 3:30 pm, when you'd *expect* that to be less than fresh. I pumped out the VERY LAST cup and it absolutely tasted just minutes old. REALLY GREAT COFFEE. Meaning that, at that late hour, they obviously turn over the product too fast for it to sit long. Also, that cup of amazing coffee was only $1.65 for a small.EXTREME BONUS: among the cream options is heavy cream. I can't really do coffee with half and half-it's just not the same. So really, in a nutshell, I found here all of the things I've never ever managed to find anywhere. Can't imagine myself ever going anywhere else now. More...

Tried a hot mocha once and have tried their pastries a couple times, they were good. I like how they have a little bit of seating outside. It is good to able to sit down and eat your pastry quickly especially if it is sunny. On my last trip to San Fran the smoke was making me so sick it was a blessing to be able to sit down for a bit.
