Service is pretty good. JP is awesomeOysters are terrible...so if you're a lover of oysters, you'll hate them. Don't waste your money. Volcano shrimp is soooo yummy. The sweetness from the mango chutney contrasting with the cajun is perfect. The lobster roll is so small, but sososooooo delicious. I just wish it was bigger because I didn't want it to end! They put a lot of Cajun seasoning on the cajun fries too, which makes it better than Five Guys Cajun fries. More...

THE best Mac and cheese I've had in forever. The waiter was very helpful and did all he can. I strongly recommend the chorizo Mac and cheese. We came on a Wednesday night with a 14 people party and with all the chaos he was trying his best. Very much appreciated. More...

Barracuda is amazing. The mimosas are very good. The live music is very entertaining. I always order the lobster quesadilla and yuca.  The only thing thats a little bit tedious at times is the wait for the table. I never got a table here  and I've  been here 3 times. Food is great though! More...

Excellent place for happy hour. Prices are excellent and serving sizes are huge! They do get pretty busy though, but it's not surprising given their food and service. Brunch is excellent too.

This is now the 4th time I've come here. Obviously I love it if I keep coming back. But I can't give it 5 stars because each and every time I've been there the service always seems to be on the slower side. Today in fact I waited 10 minutes for 2 drinks. The food and atmosphere is great, although I will say that I read on their website that Saturday brunch has live music and that was not the case. The food is so damn good here I'll keep coming back, because honestly, the long waits for drinks, apps, and entrees is worth it. More...

Sunday, July 14, 2019 arrived 10:55amdeparted 1:15pmOverall : GREAT PLACE!! We arrived at Barracuda for Sunday brunch, and we were the only two inside the restaurant (COOL!!) they just had opened and unlocked the doors. We were greeted by friendly staff and they placed our order pretty fast. Atmosphere : Quiet at first because we were the first inside of the restaurant and no one else had showed up yet. Within 15mins , people arrived in groups! Within 30mins of opening the entire restaurant was packed and it's loud. A good loud, where people are enjoying themselves, food and drinks are flowing the vibes are superb! Food : Absolutely Amazing!!! 5-out-of 5Cost : $46.78 for three mimosas and two entrees (really affordable) Great vibes!!! Definitely on my most-favorite-spot list :) More...

Tried this place on a recommendation from another local establishment.  Great spot.  Gold crowd on a Wednesday night.  Sat at the bar and got exceptional service.  Both bartenders were very informed and made great recommendations.  Drinks were amazing and the mussels were unbelievable.  Best paella I've had in years.  I'll be back anytime I'm in North Haven.  Fantastic crew here at Barracuda!!!!! Very live ambiance for a weekend brunch. They have a band performing in one corner, which makes it a bit loud for easy conversation. However, if that's the atmosphere you're looking for, you will not be disappointed by brunch at Barracuda.Due to limited seating, you may be seated at the bar if you're in a small party. That said, the service is very quick and the food is really fun and well prepared. The guava crepes (2 for $8, at time of writing) were different and quite tasty. (This is more of a sweet breakfast option, for those who are into that.)Yucca fries are excellent here.Mimosas are fine. Not bottomless here. But a nice variety of flavors, and reasonably priced pitchers. Really solid overall. Don't bring grandma unless she loves loud noise and screaming over music. :p More...

We happened to be walking around downtown New Haven and were not necessarily hungry or looking for anywhere to go. As we walked by this place we saw advertised their $1 oyster deal. Since we weren't hungry but who can say no to $1 oysters? We went in and I ordered a Mojito with a half dozen oysters, in addition we had the yucca nachos with pork belly. Let me just say that we had no idea what to expect with the nachos but we were so glad we ordered them. Now mind you I was about to give this place a 3star review because even though the place was empty it took so long to get our nachos. When the bartender came back with the nachos; she acknowledged that they took so long so she offered to give us a dessert on the house, which obviously we took her up on it and had the churros (great choice). The churros were awesome. They were nice and warm with caramel and a raspberry sauce. It was a nice way to end the night. More...

Excellent food, and great happy hour deals. I love going here for happy hour and getting the $3 beers, $6 Taco and Arepa plates. They are a Latin-American restaurant with their own spin on some Spanish favorites. If you are a fan of traditional Colombian Arepas and chicharron, there's are made a lot differently. The Arepas come in squares and remind me more of polenta. Nonetheless, they are excellent. The service can be a little bit slow, and the non happy hour prices can get expensive, but the food and drinks are quality. More...

I moved to the New Haven are about 3 years ago and ever since then Barracuda Bistro & Bar has been my favorite latin restaurant in New Haven!Everything there is so perfect, the food, the drinks, the staff (Jules, Alexia and César are my favorites) and also the atmosphere. This is definitely the place where I take all my friends every time we go out and they are never disappointed. My recommendations: Oysters Steamed MusselsAvocado SashimiYuca Nachos with Chicken PAELLA! Steak PinchosPortions are perfect to share between the table.Drinks are very nice and strong as well and very reasonable priced, Pineapple Express is my go to drink every time, caipirinhas are good and they also make THE BEST MOJITOS in New Haven.Go check it out, try it and love, ohhh and let's not forget about brunches here! Colombian breakfast, Calentado and Lobster Benedict are my favorites, I go there every Sunday for brunch and mimosas like if it was church. More...

Hands down one of the best restaurants and bars in New Haven! I've been there numerous times and am never disappointed. Amazing happy hour food and prices, phenomenal service. Drinks are strong and the food is great - I highly recommend the avocado sashimi, volcano shrimp, chorizo Mac n cheese, and lobster quesadilla. And don't forget about brunch! Barracuda was the place where I spent my college years, and I do not regret it for a second. It has the best happy hour in New Haven (hands down) and the food is ALWAYS quality. The owner, Sonia is a doll and always wants to have a good time with you at the restaurant. My boyfriend and I love everything from their yuca nachos, to the chorizo mac and cheese and the tacos. This review is solely on the brunch drinks because the dinner menu is awesome . Brunch is great there as well the food is always amazing  but I'm a little ehh with the drinks now , I went a few days ago & now they don't offer unlimited mimosas you have to pay $25 for each pitcher which is a ridiculous for the amount of drinks you get out of the pitcher & if you're with a big group you're going to be spending a lot of $$$ . I think they need to bring unlimited back , now I will be going else where for brunch & barracudas used to be my #1 go to . More...

Barracuda is located in downtown New Haven. This is a small Latin American Restaurant with a lively atmosphere. They have daily specials and a weekend brunch. I stopped by on a Saturday for brunch. I arrived around 1130, and we were seated promptly. We ordered the ahi tuna sandwich, French toast, and Cajun fries. By far the favorite item was the Cajun fries. They have a delicious season blend. The tuna sandwich was fine but came out a little over cooked. we also enjoyed guava mimosas which were delicious! A carafe is $25 and has approximately 5-6 flutes worth. The only challenges we had were the the loudness of the music playing and a confused server. There was a guitarist playing at a high pitch making conversation tough even though we sat in the back. Also, we asked for specific items with the French toast, and we were informed right as the food came out that our meal wasn't able to be made as requested so we were left to either reorder and wait another 20 minutes or just suffer through it. Not ideal. Parking is free in the lot across the street. More...

If you're in New Haven CT, this place is a must try! amazing selection of food. Place gets really crowded so be prepared for a wait. I went there on a Saturday night around 930 pm and had a 20 minute wait. It's not a bad wait, but if you're hungry, that's quite a wait. It's a cute little Latin place with amazing food. Highly recommend getting the lobster quesadilla and NY strip with Chimichurri sauce. I'm definitely curious to try the rest of their menu as the food was on point. Very authentic Latin flavors and cooked to perfection! Ambience is a bit loud, but not unbearable. You can still have a decent conversation without having to scream. Service was great. Everyone was friendly and good came out pretty quickly. Overall, a great experience to end my New Haven trip. More...

I stumbled upon Barracuda one Sunday because I saw that they have happy hour seven days a week. After having a mojito and yucca frita (I recommend both) I decided I wanted to visit again. I've been several times now and usually sit at the bar and have to say that I have a wonderful time every single time I visit. I feel welcomed and taken care of. The bartenders are wonderful, not only with the drinks and conversation, but at remembering who you are and what you like. I'm not someone who visits the same restaurants on a regular basis, but this one I do. They recently opened another location in New Haven called Te Amo Tequila and I am very happy that they are doing so well! More...

Love this bar, especially during happy hour!! Monday through Friday (4-7pm), Sunday through Thursday (10pm-1am), and Saturday/Sunday (3-5pm).Cheap drinks and appetizers, all of which are super yummy! My personal favorite is the strawberry mojito - it's the perfect ratio of ingredients and it's even got fresh strawberries and mint in it! Went to happy hour once here over the summer and it was so good that I still think about it regularly -- I'd definitely be here 3 nights a week, no questions asked, if I lived in New Haven. My friends and I ordered the steak tacos, yucca nachos (amazing!), and the blackened chicken macaroni. Everything was absolute perfection (the nachos were unlike anything I'd had before and definitely a favorite at the table) and washed down perfectly with a few strawberry margaritas. Barracuda is my favorite place for happy hour. The happy hour prices for food and drink are reasonable. My go to drink is the coconut mojito. It's made right every time! The food is always pretty consistent too. I've had the yucca nachos, tacos, pulled pork arepas, and the plátano con queso and all are pretty delicious. This place is awesome!! My friends and I visited on a Friday evening. They were running their happy hour which allowed us to try more things. My absolute favorite was the chorizo Mac and cheese. I swear I still think about it. We also got the empeñadas which were made columbian style and delicious. Not pictured because of hunger. My husband got a flatbread which was basically a pizza. He enjoyed it. The cocktails were also great. Not too strong but not a waste of money.Note that the arepas aren't stuffed like they are traditionally. There are places as a based with the meat as a topping. Dessert is pictured. The flan was to die for. I didnt have tres leches but there was none left. I highly recommend this place. To preface this review, I have ONLY come to Barracuda during happy hour. During this time, the HH food and drinks are fantastically priced and well proportioned. Though one thing to look out for is the restaurant is small and during happy hours, the wait can be substantial. Also, there doesn't seem to be enough staff during these times so getting a menu, water, ordering, and receiving your food can be slow. Definitely not a quick meal!+YUCA NACHOS: I usually get these with mushrooms (the pork belly and chicken are both on the dry side). The yuca is nice and crispy with what tastes like taco seasoning, which pairs nicely with sour cream, salsa, and guacamole. +SALCHIPAPAS: Not sure if you can go wrong with loaded french fries but it's delicious nonetheless! The fries are nice and crispy and it's a good amount of toppings.-MUSSELS: It comes in a very large bowl, and the flavor is alright. I'm a big fan of mussels but it's a good for what you pay for.*All these dishes are great for sharing!Yes, the tables are a little wobbly, the service is a little subpar, the space between tables is questionable, but the yumminess of the happy hour food can't be denied. Would definitely return for some yuca nachos! More...

Happy hour  I wish I could share a ton about this place but I can't just yet because I haven't tried the menu. I did however want to comment on the venue and bar! I had a great happy hour experience. Who can say no to $5 martini! This place is a nice intimate venue. We sat at the bar and I was amazed by the lighting behind the bar. It was so pretty and inviting. If I hadn't just ate I would have had to indulge in the cheap happy hour apps. Everyone at the bar seemed to really enjoy them. Fantastic bistro/bar with the best happy hour in the city. The drinks are strong and cheap ($5 mojitos and $3 drafts? amazing). Their food is an absolute steal during the happy hour; a huge plate of chicharron and beans for $8 or a big bowl of mussels for $5? Again, amazing. The food is very tasty and comforting. I also wanted to praise the waitstaff and bartenders at the place. This is a really inviting place. We'll be back many, many times. More...

If you want to enjoy some good food/ beverage and great service without breaking the bank then look no further...barracuda's happy hour it is. Yuca fries, mac n cheese, chicken mango flatbread, yuca nachos, a portion of plain old french fries and a guava margarita... all this for under $40, incredibly priced and yummy!! The mango chicken flatbread was to die for (thin crust almost the size on a small pizza topped with mango chutney, chicken and fontina cheese) loved it so much that I'm gonna be back just for that. The margaritas are incredible too, I had the guava...doesn't feel over powered or syrupy but quite on the contrary so light and refreshing... loved it!!!... 5 stars just for that. Probably my all-time favorite bar in New Haven. Happy hour (twice!! each day) is a STEAL - $5 appetizers (enough for a small meal) and margs/mojitos. Expect it to be noisy and crowded at any given happy hour, including late night. Protip if you're going at night - the kitchen closes at 11:30, and it's only drinks after that. Servers and bartenders are pretty great considering how busy the bar always is. Food-wise, I recommend the arepas (the mango pork one is to DIE for) and the chorizo mac & cheese. Drink-wise, they have a lot of great margarita flavors that will take you at least a month (depending on how often you go) to get through. Highly recommend!! More...

I came here on a Saturday morning with my boyfriend and another couple for brunch. The place is very cozy inside so there aren't too many tables, so it is recommended to have a reservation even for brunch. We were seated quickly and the waiter came to take our order within minutes. They have really good endless drink options for brunch such as sangria, Bloody Marys, and Mimosas. The food is well prepared and pretty large portions for the price. The reason I'm giving it 4 stars instead of 5 is because we ordered an item and specifically said we wanted the yuca fries as the side, and it ended up coming with regular french fries even after the reminder. Also my over easy eggs were a little undercooked and the white part was still pretty runny. However it was still a great spot and I'd recommend coming here for happy hour or brunch. More...

Barracuda -- a staple of the New Haven happy hour scene. Their nachos with pork belly are decadent, their yucca fries are delightful, and their cocktails are refreshing. They have promotions like cinco de mayo $2 tacos and $5 margaritas, winning over the hearts of many New Haven locals. Some misses: the pork arepas (the arepas are rather bland and the pork is quite salty) and the chorizo mac and cheese (also salty and hard to finish). The only real negatives I can think up for Barracuda are how salty the food can be -- would definitely recommend sharing the nachos with someone, that the service can be especially slow, and that the location is maybe not as good as some of the other bars in town. But even with those caveats, the cheap, delicious food is enough to keep coming back. More...

My brother took me here for their happy hour on Sunday. The staff is friendly and attentive and the prices are really great. I lived in Miami for a few years and am usually hard pressed to find a good mojito elsewhere. I really enjoyed the mojito here as well as the Yuca nachos, Platano Con Queso, and Mango pork Arepas. We also had an order of pork belly tacos. They were very flavorful but the pork belly was a bit over cooked. Overall the food is phenomenal and I will definitely be returning. More...

A plus for the best brunch I have ever had. Large variety of unlimited drink options that come to the table before you finish! Very attentive staff, we came with a large group. Our waitress (had a piercing near her lip) was exceptional! Food was the best! We brought a family member who arrived from Dominican Republic. He said his Chicharron was better than back home! Great job! (Definitely make reservations!) The bad reviews I have read seem to be from patrons who tried to get a seat during busy brunch hours without reservations. More...

One of my go-to spots for happy hour or a late bite. Nice atmosphere, most nights you can expect there to be dimmed lights and decent loud music! In the evening, you can almost always expect to stand and wait a few minutes for a table or you just might be lucky enough to grab an empty spot at the bar. Raul, one of the regular bartenders, is great also. The food is delicious. I recommend the chicken & mango chutney flatbread as well the the steak arepa (hold the arepa- the arepas are bitter to me) over yellow rice! Ahh- mazzz-ing!! More...

Our confirmed reservation somehow fell through the cracks but they were able to accommodate us for dinner on a Saturday night. We ate more than we should have of shared "small plates". I think that is the way to go here. There are so many to choose from. Everything was super flavorful and made for an excellent, and great value Latin food experience. We very much enjoyed our visit and I will definitely be back. Highly recommend the Yucca nachos and the plantain with the cheese on it..so good. More...

After seeing so many rave reviews about this place, I couldn't wait to try it out. I called at 3:00 pm on a Saturday to make a reservation.  I got an answering machine saying I needed to leave a message to make a reservation.  So I left a message.   I tried calling a few more times to see if I could make reservations.  Each time I got the answering machine and no one returned my initial call. My friend and I were heading into New Haven that night anyway so we thought we'd stop in and see if we could get a table.  We walked in around 7:30/7:45 and saw all the tables were taken.  We wanted to see how long the wait was.  There was a sign saying "please wait to be seated." Well, we waited and waited and waited.  We did not see one employee in site (other than one bartender behind the bar who was hustling as the bar was pretty busy, too).  Eventually a woman walked over and we asked how long the wait was.  She told us they do not take walk-ins.   She said we need to make reservations.  I told her I tried to make a reservation earlier that day.  Her response was, "Well, it's been busy." I totally get that they were busy, but it's 4 days later and I still haven't received a phone call back to make a reservation. Shouldn't someone at least returned my call? I'm pretty sure that's how it works.2/19/18 updateI finally was able to make reservations and try this place out.  This time when I called someone answered the phone and I was able to make reservations for that evening. When we got there we were seated right away.  The food was amazing.  I especially enjoyed the avocado sashimi and the steak arepas!  So good!  I wanted to try everything on the menu.  I will definitely be back to try out some of the other dishes. I came here for brunch with a large group. We called ahead so when we all arrived we were seated right away at a large table towards the back. I ordered the stuffed french toast and was really, really happy with them. Often times places will call things "stuffed" french toast when it's really two slices with some cream on top and that always irks me but this place did it correctly with a proper filling that made the entire toast piece feel thick and fluffy. It was very sweet, but not overly so. The one order was around $8 and was essential two stuffed pieces, so not too much, but I was full and happy with it. I stole a bunch of breakfast potatoes from my boyfriend's plate and they were GREAT. They had that crunchy, seasoned edge that just has you hunting for little fried bits around the plate, is that just me? I hope not! Overall, I want to come back and try more to write a more rounded review. Also, the service was friendly and attentive. We found street parking. The experience was overall good. More...

I felt the need to write this review because there was an appalling table next to us. It was a party of three, I guess they were waiting a long time because they wouldnt shut up about it. They started at the bar and then moved over to a table. They were so rude to the staff and talked in the most condescending tone to their server. Even the bartender came over to feel them out I guess to smooth things over but the crazies werent having it. They were being argumentative and difficult and set on having an awful time, dont you hate those people? The whole thing was bizzare. Me and my sister were taken aback because I'm not a regular but every time I've been here I've always had a good time and the service is great. Needless to say the staff handled the situation as best they could. This is my third or fourth time going to Barracuda for their brunch. From the live music to the bottomless mimosas to the option of switching to bottomless Bloody Marys to the chorizo omelette to the arepas, everything is so delicious it can't be beat. It's easy, it's not pretentious, it doesn't break the bank and it's good. One thing I will say is that the girls that work at this restaurant hustle! It gets incredibly busy and this past Sunday was no different. Despite the madness they are always attentive even when they get hangry psychopaths. There was one bartender, ONE, making drinks for the whole restaurant. She was running back and forth the whole time we were there. She's the one with the crazy hair and a great smile  I remember serving in college and how hectic it gets so my hat goes off to all the Barracuda ladies!! Take-aways:*Get the arepas*Get the churros*Get the bottomless *Definitely make rezzies ahead of time!*Be nice to people who serve you food More...

I haven't lived in Connecticut for the past 2 years. As my birthday wish this year; I requested a dinner at Barracuda. We came down from upstate NY for dinner because the food is THAT good. Sonia always, always delivers and then some. She added some new things to the menu and both things we tried were phenomenal (volcano shrimp & steak tacos). We of course had to go with our OG favorite the mango bbq pork arepas and then ordered a second round of them because we devoured them in .2 seconds. Sonia was informed that it was my birthday and sent over a round of champagne on the house. Not only was it a phenomenal meal but we were treated impeccably. I cannot rave enough about barracuda. In town visiting for a few days and this place was recommended to me. Love the small intimate feeling. Lots of bar seating for the size of the place (about half of the room is bar). It's very light decor that's flattering. Great atmosphere for happy hour with friends or to just go grab a quick bite. It's not too crowded on a Thursday night (full bar but empty booths) probably due to Yale still being in finals. Lots of margarita options and a GREAT Happy Hour! Most mixed drinks $5 with $3 drafts. But even better is happy hour food is $5-8 range which is a great deal. Staff was very friendly and attentive, even with the full bar. Ordered the blackened chicken Mac & cheese and it was delicious. Wonderful wonderful happy hour. As a grad student, I cannot stress this enough--go to the happy hour! Things to order: -Pork arepas (hearty and delicious, generous portions)-Mac and Cheese (huge portion, especially given that it's a happy hour menu item)-Mussels (good price for the portion you get, but I found these to be a little too oily)Service can be a little slow, but it's also an indication of how busy it can get in Barracuda. Barracuda is a great bar when you want a casual night out with friends on a weekday. They do a late night (10pm-1am) happy hour Mondays-Thursdays, where mojitos/margaritas and a bunch of appetizers/tapas are all $5 each. The mojitos are delicious and come in various fruit mixed flavors, such as strawberry and mango! The margaritas, at least the night my friends and I tried them, are ridiculously strong and frankly tasted awful. As for the food, I've tried their mac & cheese, yucca fries, and nachos. All of them have been delicious. The only reason I can't give this place 5 stars is because the space is really too small to accommodate their clientele. It's a very skinny restaurant and there's really no standing room, so if all the tables are taken you don't really have any options. And because they need to up their margarita game asap! More...

I went to barracuda for brunch, and the food was amazing. I had the veggie omelette with yucca fries (picture attached). I normally don't like omelettes  that have the ingredients cooked into it, but this one was an exception. The yucca fries were perfectly seasoned and the green dipping sauce was so unique and flavorful. I also got a guava mojito, and unfortunately, it was way too sweet and not strong enough. It tasted like I was drinking straight up simple syrup with no alcohol. Next time I'll ask for one without the ss or maybe just a splash. Definitely try the yucca fries if you go!! This is a great place to venture out and try Colombian food. We had an order or Arepas  with the chicken to start the meal. The chicken had a slow heat which allows you to experience all the flavors of the marinade and with the addition of the corn cakes soaking the juices, its a must get in my book. Our main course consisted of Pollo Saltado and Carne Con Papas. The chicken has similar flavoring to the chicken on the Arepas but the dish as a whole was satisfying. The 12oz steak was cooked was cooked exactly like I ordered and the side of mashed sweet potatoes was great. I truly loved this brunch experience.  The bottomless mimosa option is amazing especially because the bartenders are generous which just makes you want to go back for more. I had the Lobster Benedict and yuca fries and my friend went for the breakfast burger.  While I cannot speak to his burger experience, it looked yummy and he seemed to really enjoy it, but that lobster bendict really hit this girls spot.  There were two well sized lobster patties with the typical poached eggs and hollandaise sauce and I just could not stop eating it.  The yuca fries were a touch salty but blended nicely with its perfectly seasoned counterpart.  I have told all of my friends about this place and already plan on revisiting again very very soon.  BTW...the live band is tucked into an uncomfortable little corner at the front of the restaurant but added a nice little touch to the early afternoon indulgences. We were able to join in on the fun ambiance of this place, it is a busy place and you are able to try some seafood and as well as Latin American food. Our service was outstanding. We started off with a dozen Oysters that were local to the town and all of us ended with a Latin American dish for our main course. I LOVE Barracuda!! Such a fan of the brunch; I've been twice for brunch and once for dinner!! I went for dinner and was kind of disappointed. I got the Seafood Paella which I felt was pretty dry. However, their drinks and brunch are my favorite!! I have been for birthday brunch as well as after a graduation. This place is tiny so big parties definitely need a reservation. On the weekends during brunch they have a live band playing which adds to the great atmosphere of this place. Both times for brunch I have gotten the veggie omelette with yucca fries as well as a bottomless mimosa. The yucca fries are TO DIE FOR! I had never had them previously and was hesitant because I'm a huge potato fan, but I'm hooked. Most of their dishes are served with like a green sauce on the side that seems to have a strong cilantro base, most people in my parties enjoyed it as did I! Their bottomless mimosa is $18 for an hour and you can try their many flavors (pear, peach, mango, strawberry, orange, etc.) which was great for me because I'm not a huge fan of orange juice! I have also split their Nutella and banana crepe --OMG YUM. So amazing but I'm glad I split and got another dish for myself as well because I'm not sure it would have filled me up for brunch. I've been with many people that have gotten their sliders, breakfast burger, and breakfast burrito and none of been disappointed! The only negative someone had was their Bloody Mary- not a traditional Bloody Mary, not a fan. All other drinks are fantastic though! The staff is also amazing!! Very sweet and accommodating. Two people in my party were in a rush to leave for the New Haven Train Station so the staff took their orders while we were waiting for a table to get their food out as soon as we sat down! They have tons of gluten free and vegetarians options. HIGHLY recommend, I can't wait to go back!! More...

I am so glad I found and chose Barracuda for dinner. The ambience is moderately noisy and I like it. The lighting, seating and music gives it a very cozy feeling. The staff are very friendly and engages with you in a conversation. They have a good selection of drink menu and considering the fact that I was here with two Colombians, we ordered for the Colombian rum based drink along with the Aguardiente with passion fruit. Both of them were good and had a good amount of alcohol :)The choices of appetizers are a lot when compared to the entrees. The size of the appetizer dishes are big enough and if you order a couple of them, you've ordered a dinner portion food. The food taste very good and they have some distinct dishes, especially the Barracuda yuca nachos and the vegan tostones. We also ordered for the paella and it was so packed with flavors, it was delicious. They have a HH menu as well as a brunch menu which I will have to try out sometime soon. And they were tough and rubbery. However, my friend went back and ordered same dish a few weeks later... still has the same fishy scent. I would go back to this place... just for the arepas More...

Came to West Haven with my gf to go to the boardwalk and catch crazy pokemon (yaaaa ya crack your jokes but it's rediculous there!).  Me being the extreme foodie that I am, I of course asked her if she wanted to find a new spot to grab a bite.  She, being the wonderful gf she is even though she makes fun of me from time to time for it, said OK, and from Yelp we found Barracuda Bistro and Bar.We were seated by a very nice and personable waitress who recommended some great drinks and checked up on us at the perfect pace throughout our time there.  They have a great menu, almost too good where it reminds me of going to the Big E... you know you have to go at least twice to try enough selections to be satisfied.  For starters we decided on the guacamole and plaintain chips, and the lobster quesadillas which had fresh lobster, pepper jack cheese, tomatoes, and scallions.  Neither app was bad.  The guac and plantains were pretty basic but still good.  The lobster quesadilla had great flavor and was really good, but would have been amazing if it wasn't soggy on the bottom.  All is forgiven though for what was yet to come!I wanted to try so much that I ordered 3 more apps as my meal which consisted of a chorizo flatbread with pineapple and pepper jack cheese, spinach and mushroom mac n cheese, and the Barracuda nachos.  The ol' ball n chain (lol kidding!) ordered a salmon dish with a mixture of apples, tomatoes, onions, and more.  Her salmon dish was outstanding!  We both loved it, the unique flavors that I normally wouldn't go for came together so well.  The chorizo flatbread was topped with fresh ingredients and very tasty.  The spinach and mushroom mac n cheese was second to only Rooster Co as the best mac n cheese I've ever had... great consistency, fresh ingredients, and delicious cheese sauce.  Now... for the most wonderful creation known to man... let me introduce to you... the one... the only... Barracuda nachos.  Consisting of AMAZINGLY DELICIOUS yucca frita, topped with blackened chicken, pepper jack cheese, tomatoes, scallions, with sour cream and guac on the side... this is a must try plate that makes the trip worth it alone, and could easily replace traditional nacho apps everywhere.I was stuck on whether to go with 4 or 5 stars because of the first apps served, but the rest of the dishes knocked it so far out of the park that I had no choice but to go with 5.  Thanks for introducing me to yucca frita Barracuda!  New favorite! Going to make this simple. I work in hospitality so going out for food and drinks is both education and pleasure.I have been to Barracuda a few times in the past because JP is an amazing guy I met here. Impeccable. Much as his personality. He has a wonderful energy about him. Unfortunately I have not visited in some time and I actually felt BAD about it just because how great he is.My general take backs on the 18-20 visits since the place opened. is 3/5-Food is really good, *the crab cakes could benefit from more texture.*the mac & cheese con chorrizo is out of this world. Like really. The next time I break up with my girlfriend I'll eat 4 servings of that while watching "Caught in the Web" *De-shell your oysters, nothing sucks more than chewing on shell pieces. Its not time consuming and god FORBID someone chokes on a piece of shell.Today 10/2/2016 is straight up 5/5Ironically? Because my food got shot to shit. All the same I was taken care of, attended to...rather than left eating a piece of leather meant Med Rare while still paying for it.And im posting because I WANT Sonia to know, Anthony - the bartender who took care of me was great. Prompt, gave me water off the bat, very inviting, and when my MR steak came out VwD - took it up on himself to fix the situation. Most establishments believe that saving 4 bucks on food cost is a win vs alienating a customer. That is a terrible approach. THIS guy actually went out of his way to make it up to me, dropped no excuses, just did it right.Hospitality is about connecting and GENUINE desire to make someone comfortable. They do it. 5 stars and overdue. More...

For the price, I am very satisfied with the food quality and quantity.  I especially enjoyed the plantain chips and the paella! I didn't go during happy hour. My friend and I stopped in on a Saturday night and sat at the bar and had drinks and food. The drinks were really good and the bartender was very nice. The appetizers had big portions and were pretty good. I had the arepas which were a little dry, but the topping was very good. My friend got mac & cheese with chorizo which was also good. I would definitely come here again. More...

Nice happy hour specials. Tried the $1 oysters that everyone raved about. They were pretty good. I got the chorizo flatbread which was smaller than I had hoped but still filling. The Happy Hours menu is what nails the stars for me. The drinks and the Arepas make it a fine place to hang out. Does get loud and crowded because of the deals also the service gets patchy during peak hours, but otherwise good overall food. I suggest the Beef Arepas.

Love this place. Definitely one of my favorite spots in New Haven. The food simply tastes delicious. It is well-seasoned and full of flavor. I really enjoy the chicharron and the shrimp and lobster omelette. They also have excellent mimosas with a good variety. When I have been there, they played really good live music, and they have a charming ambiance. Their happy hour is the best!  I'm not so into their drink options because I basically like beer and cocktails that aren't too sweet and they only have 2 HH beer options and limited cocktails.  However, the HH food makes it well worth it! The prices range from $5-7 and the food is really tasty--You can get a giant bowl of mussels in a tasty garlicy/butter sauce or really yummy and filling mac and cheese dishes or a wonderful plantain and cheese dish that is SO GOOD or...other options...I highly recommend coming Sunday-Wednesday for $1 oysters in addition to the other Happy hour items. A Great happy hour place and almost always has happy hour specials going on. Sunday through Thursday they have one dollar oysters all day and night and in the evenings they offer five dollar margaritas Mojitos, and fruit martinis. Drinks very on strength depending on the bartender and night, but over all I have always been satisfied. They also have great deals on appetizers (like the Yucca Frita) and you can easily split 1 to 2 of them with a friend over drinks one evening. Most tables in the restaurant seat two but there are a few that seat more for big groups. The atmosphere is very Latin, and the music they play is pretty good.I would highly recommend this place to students on campus because it's an easy place to get good drinks while still on the college budget More...

I've been here too many times to count, usually because I refuse to pay the GPSCY membership and can't figure out how to sneak in. Thus, it becomes a Barracuda night and that is never boring. I've been here mostly for happy hour, which is a hoot! I like the mojitos a lot... too much perhaps. Their pork arepa and mac and cheese are yummy and is even more delectable at their happy hour prices. You should have been to their 1-year anniversary. THAT was a party and the oyster bar was gorgeous and delicious. It's a really fun place; I've met so many people here and introduced even more to the space. What makes the ambiance so much fun is Raul and Edwin (did I get that right?), the bartenders. They are so friendly and definitely can put a smile on your face. Edwin even let me have a bite of his burger, which at first I didn't even know they had, but bacon and beef *drool*. Raul makes some yummy drinks, especially passionfruit ones. However, he came up with this raspberry chocolate alcoholic beverage for V-day, which he claims is good, but I still highly doubt haha. More...

I'm a new resident to New Haven, and so far, I think this has been my favorite place! My boyfriend and I were so excited about the menu, we ordered *so* much more food than we could have feasibly eaten... A dozen oysters (YUM!), steak arepas (Woah, buddy), lobster quesadilla (seriously, amazing) and some seafood paella (huge and tasty)!!! Our eyes were absolutely bigger than our stomachs, and our stomachs couldn't have been happier about it! The ambiance was casual, trendy and fun, with a long seating area opposite the bar. We were seated next to some friendly ladies who gave us some wonderful advice about the area and let us know we'd chosen the right spot for dinner. Service was prompt, and we started out with a few drinks. My white wine sangria was peachy and fresh, with a very sweet taste. On to the food: The oysters were fresh and delicious, and my only suggestion would be the addition of either Tabasco or horseradish to the platter. We'll definitely be back for more of the $1/ea special! The arepas were a new item for me, and I wasn't at all disappointed! The marinated steak was full of flavor and the consistency was like a dense, moist cornbread... delicious! The lobster quesadilla was heavenly - if I had to come back and order one thing, this would be it. Buttery, fresh, cheesy and hot... definitely my favorite item of the night! The paella was filling and flavorful, and I wished I'd saved more room for it. The seafood in it was delicious, and it seemed like an entree that could easily be split.Overall, I'm really impressed with this place! I'm glad Yelp steered me in the right direction on my seafood quest, and I can't wait to come back and try it again soon!! More...

Intrigued by the reviews I ventured out on a weds ($1 oyster weds) to grab a quick bite. I sat at the bar and although it was busy- most people were already drinking and eating- so I was surprised it took the bartender almost 10 minutes before offering me the menus or a drink. I will chalk it up to my short height.. Because once he got it together- he was on point. Very attentive and knowledge about the specials, specialty drinks, and the menu. . Seems like it is a good spot for happy hour - flatbreads for $7 , house wines for $5, and a sun-weds $1 oyster special.. I ordered 6 oysters and prayed really hard.. They were actually great! Nice big ones with a buttery taste! For a small plate- I chose the yucca chicken nachos. I didn't know what I was in for- but it was really good! The yucca was cooked perfectly, the chicken was tasty but just a little on the dry side for me. All the fixings on top were fresh and complimented the yucca well. They had many specialty drinks available with bitters, ginger, all sorts of exotics.. Overall the experience was good- and I will def come back to try a few other items that caught my eye on the menu. More...

Barracuda Bistro and Bar is definitely my favorite place in southern Connecticut (actually, it might be my favorite place in all of Connecticut). Wether I am going out for dinner, drinks, or both, it is always the first choice in my mind. The atmosphere is lively yet surprisingly welcoming and the food is AMAZING. The arepas and avocado sashimi are wonderful starters and the New York steak is one of the best that I have ever had. For those of you who are considering visiting Barracuda for drinks--the bartenders are phenomenal and there is no skimping when it comes to the alcohol content in the drinks! The staff is friendly and makes sure that you are well taken care of, and the wait time to be seated and for food is quicker or at least on par with most places. 3.5-4 stars. This place is such a go-to on campus because it's right behind my residential college. Items on the menu can be a hit or miss, but they do have an absolutely unbeatable happy hour (hours and prices are on their website). You just gotta know what to order: Personally I really like the mojitos. I've tried guava, original and mango. Would say that the classic original is actually the best. I've also tried the margaritas but the alcohol tasted cheap and extremely strong, so I wasn't a fan. Can't complain toooo much though because both are $5 during happy hour! Foodwise I really like their chorizo mac and cheese (not even a fan of mac and cheese normally) and OMG their fries are to die for. It's a great late night place! First, don't let the name or the inconspicuous front door fool you....yes half the place is a bar and the other half has about 12 tables total, but the food is way beyond your typical "bar food" experience. It's food with a Latin flair, but even that exceeds expectations, the best way to classify it as Fresh, authentic Latin American.  And here's a tip - for the Happy Hour between 4-7 pm Monday-Friday.  I'm not sure which we enjoyed more, the Charizo Mac & Cheese, the Yucca fries, the flat bread or the arepas. All tasted fresh, unique and had that extra touch that only someone who cares would go the extra mile for. Portions are large and shareable, and here's the best part - all 4 plus a draft beer and the bill was $20!I also appreciated the owner/manager (I assumed) coming to the table often to check on us and do the extra things that come from a smaller, more intimate experience. He even told us about other specials, late hours, etc - I like to give people who are passionate, understand service and produce the unexpected.I'm not sure they would handle larger parties well and it is small, so I assume it gets packed at times.  Don't miss this gem! I am a major fan of this place.  I regret only that it took me so long to visit... can't figure out how that happened.  I returned to Barracuda for my second trip last night.  My first visit one week prior I was with friends celebrating my birthday and I forgot my earrings my friend gave me.  I thought I would never see them again. But upon walking into the door my night was made.  Raul's flooding smile assured me he kept my forgotten gift safe.  He was very excited to give them back.  All of the staff and the owner recognized me from the last visit and said hi.  The staff gives off very good vibes and they keep the drinks flowing.  Customer service: 100.  The food was delicious.  We ordered arepas, which are my favorite thing on the menu so far. I'm always a sucker for yuca fries and Barracuda's doesn't disappoint.  Also- the guacamole is a must!  The tamale is good too but I was expecting traditional corn.  I guess the Columbians do it different.  The drinks are solid, too.  Nice draft beer selection.  I look forward to exploring the menu more.  The ambience and customer service will keep me coming back.  Its unique for New Haven.  Definitely excited to have another favorite go-to! The staff is friendly helpful and reflect the care that the owner (I think it's Sonia) quite apparently has for this place and it's customers. She has stopped by our table on a few of our visits and this is one of the things that sets places like this apart from the likes of Geronimo, Barcelona etc. with their multiple locations and corporate ownership. I like this restaurant a lot, it is a very pleasant space with very nice staff. We had chorizo mac & cheese  for an app, my wife had  arepas with flank steak, I got the Chicharron with a side of yucca frita. The portions were generous with a nice presentation and delicious. The two of us were eating on a "double" table meant for 4, the staff asked to take 1/2 of the double table for a bigger party. No problem of course , we didn't mind, the waiter asked if we like rum - who doesn't.  - a minute later 2 glasses of a very nice rum applied on our table as a thank you. Cant beat that. needless to say we plan to go back More...

What a great place. I was in town for one night and looking for a place  to eat and found this on Yelp. The $1 oysters were fresh. The arepas ( little polenta cakes ) were delicious. I got mine topped with flank steak. And the flatbread pizza was also good. Very friendly place. I met the owner, who is from Columbia, and she told me she buys the oysters from a neighbor who harvests them daily. The happy hour prices are good too! More...

Visited Barracuda for the first time this evening. My husband and I chose to sit at the bar. We were immediately greeted by Eddy, the bartender. He was friendly and a cool guy to talk with. I asked him to tell me about specialty drinks. I chose to try a strawberry caipirinha, made with Cuban rum - it was delicious. Not a fake fruit juice drink you get at a chain restaurant. It was fresh and delicious. We ordered three items off of the small plates menu, yucca frite, empanadas and steak arepa. All delicious, though I think I could eat the steak arepa everyday! It was that good and flavorful. The space is small, comfortable and decorated well. While there we looked at the happy hour and brunch menus so we may try them at another time. I highly recommend! This place is awesome! The duck confit arepas were very good and the avocado sashimi was incredible. Best avocado I've ever had mixed with deliciously fresh fish and a phenomenal sauce. Then we split a grilled chicken sandwich with guac, cheese, and tomato that used tostones as bread. It was very good and you really can't find a healthier sandwich than that either. Then, to end the meal I had the tres leches cake. I am a big tres leches fan and I have to say, this was the best one I've ever had.  I didn't think it was possible to get such a great tasting, filling meal (that was pretty healthy) for just 45 dollars in new haven. Our server was great, very friendly and had good suggestions for us. At the end of the meal we had the pleasure of meeting the owner, who was just as wonderful as our entire experience. Can't wait to spread the word about this place and to make it back there again! More...

Well so far service is ok. I sat at the bar and I would give it a 3.5 out of 5. The guy barely acknowledged me. He spent most of his time talking to a couple about Barcelona. Food was 4.5 out of 5. If I lived here I would come back but sit at a table. Atmosphere the bar chair are really uncomfortable. You don't notice until about 15 minutes of sitting but it wears on you. Definitely designed for a quick drink not an entire meal. Normally I would drink a 2nd beer but I wanted to get up ha. Prices this has to be the best priced place for quality I have been to in the area. Very reasonable More...

First time coming to barracuda's and it made a good first impression! We first got there there weren't any tables for 4, so the host told us we could wait at the bar, which we did. We grabbed a few drinks and the bartenders there were awesome! Really great service and great to talk to. The host was really accommodating, took us to the table when one came up. So far so good. We ordered and the food was on point. My friend and I ordered the flank steak  which tasted amazing. Arepas are basically corn flour flat bread, but the way they make it at barracuda's is really tasty. Almost like it was fried! The sauce was good and it came with a good serving of steak! We were impressed. Then we had the seafood paella, and that did not disappoint either! It was a good serving and it came with a ton of mussels, shrimp and chicken! It wasn't stingy on the seafood like some places where they throw in a few pieces of seafood and call it a day. This was legit! It was a very savory dish. Both plates were very filling and very inexpensive. Good enough to share for two. They also have brunch with bottoms mimosas, definitely going back!! More...

Came here for restaurant week and the food was AMAZING.Service:Our waiter was friendly and the food came out quickly. When I left my hat at the table, she helped me find it as well. Food:We ordered the paella, the lobster tacos, and the churros. The churros were average. They had peanut butter on the inside, which was good, but not what I was craving. The lobster tacos and the paella were to die for. SO GOOD. I remember the lobster tacos had a hint of something unexpected. I forgot what the flavor was, but i really loved it. Price:As our food was subsidized by Pierson, each person had 20 dollars. I shared with someone and so for 40 dollars, I had that entire feast. So I would say it's a little pricy for the average college student, but worth the money!10/10would recommend More...

So far I've come here for brunch and happy hour, two of my favorites meals, and left feeling satisfied both times. First off let me say that they have an all you can drink mimosa brunch which is something I've been wanting for years in New Haven. Though both times I've been here for brunch I never actually ordered it because the bloody Mary's are so good I want to keep drinking those. If bloodies were included in the AYCD I would prob be here every Sunday. Secondly they have amazing happy hour deals. Most places have specials on only food or booze, but here they have both and a lot of great options to boot! There's $4 glasses of wine and beer and $5 margaritas, plus a ton of really great appetizers for only $5. I had the steak and the duck arepas which had a substantial amount of meat on them though the flavor of the steak ones were definitely better. The mushroom flatbread looked more like a pizza but it was huge and had an amazing truffle flavor and was a great deal for only $7. And the grilled plantain with melted mozzarella was decadent and delicious! The only thing I did not enjoy here were the oysters which looked deceivingly big but had little meat to them and were not shucked properly. But the bartenders were friendly and attentive and the deals were great so I will most certainly be back to try some more things on the menu. More...

Fabulous food, fabulous service, fabulous ambiance! Five of us shared 3 small plates, 2 large plates and 3 flan for dessert. Add in 3 oyster shots (at only $3 a pop) and 20% tip, and it was $22 pp, and we left fappy (our word for full and happy). One dish was better than the next, and Yvonne's house made flan was by far the best we've ever had, anywhere! And when we asked Yvonne if they had good, strong Columbian coffee, she didn't hesitate to say "I'll make you a fresh pot, and make it strong." Well the coffee was fresh and fabulous, and no problem getting some cream from the kitchen when we asked. My sister in law are always on the look out for a new bottomless brunch spot so we decided to try Barracuda's out.  The space was small but not crowded at 1:00.  We sat at the bar where the bartender greeted us right away.  I ordered a shrimp and chorizo omelet while my sister in law opted for plain scrambled eggs with bacon.  My omelet was delicious (and big) and the yucca fries were very good.  Probably the best thing on the plate was the spicy dipping sauce for the fries.  My sister in law shared the same satisfaction with her food.. And that sauce.  My only gripe would be that food service was a little slow but the bartender was so attentive refilling our mimosas we really didn't care.  Also, the bottomless mimosas only run for 1 hour from the time you're seated which isn't stated; however, our bartender didn't give us a hard time about it.  This shouldn't be an issue for most people but we're very thirsty customers.  Overall great time, will definitely be back. Barracuda Bistro & Bar is a small, casual establishment on the corner of Chapel and Park streets in downtown New Haven, CT. Those who've experienced Barracuda know of it's amazing happy hour specials, great menu, and friendly staff. Sonia Salazar, the bistro's owner, brings her experience and expertise in Colombian flavors to Barracuda. You have to try the arepas (pictured below), topped with mango barbecue pork, steak, or chicken... as well as the yucca frita with chimichurri sauce. Both of these items, along with their famed macaroni and cheese with Colombian chorizo, are also sold for markedly reduced prices during their happy hour. Barracuda also has a great brunch with many options to choose from. All of the food is extremely flavorful, and comes with a bit of Colombian flare! I was visiting New Haven from Seattle and was completely impressed with everything! I've had yuca at many places and this was by far the best version I've tried, coming with a delicious chimichurri sauce as a bonus. The guacamole was also excellentl. We tried the pork and steak arepas- both tasty- the pork was quite sweet and the steak was perfectly cooked and had a nice spiciness level to it. Among the four of us, we tried the passion fruit caipirinha, besame, and red wine sangria- all fantastic and very well priced! We didn't try the oysters, but they have some amazing deals throughout the week ($1 per oyster M-F, $15/dozen normally). The wait staff was friendly, quick, and helpful. It was late on a Sunday and not too crowded, so the owner came out to chat with us a few times. Weekend brunch is also worth checking out - I had the lobster eggs benedict, which was to die for. My friend and I were wandering around on 4th of July trying to find an open bar and stumbled on Barracuda. The bartenders had stars & stripes suspenders on and were very friendly! There were others seated at the bar as well as at the tables, and it wasn't too loud or too quiet. They seemed to have some issues with the music/sound system, but the bartenders made jokes about it and I didn't mind. They had a Magic Hat "Electric Peel" Grapefruit IPA on tap at the time, so I got a glass of that and a veggie quinoa burger with their cajun fries, and my friend got a glass of Riesling. We had a good time chatting with each other and with some of the other people at the bar and definitely enjoyed the food and the atmosphere. Definitely coming back to try their brunch options at some point!Update 7/31/2015:Have since met the owner and more bartenders and come back with different groups of friends. I was really impressed with Barracuda! We decided to come here on a Saturday evening for dinn and drinks. The place is pretty small with a row of high booths & tables and a bar area. We came around 7 and didn't have a problem with seating though. After much deliberation, we decided on 4 small plates to share for the 3 of us . BUT let me start off with the MOJITO-Peach mojito was so good! They packed so much flavor into it like you could tell they muddled the mint and lime so there were chunks in your drink. Ok with that kind of description it sounds gross, but it was so delicious! -Yucca frita- YES. must get. Fried yucca seasoned perfectly with the best cilantro sauce ever! I highly recommend this even though it's such a simple dish. It tasted fine on its own, but the cilantro sauce added even MORE to it. If it wasn't so heavy, I could eat these for dayz-Empanadas- these were ok. I've had them in the Dominican before so I had something to compare to.. but also maybe because we ate them when they got cold. The dough just wasn't as chewy as I like. The filling was made of potato and chicken and just seemed a little bland without the sauce. Good to try, but I'd probably pass on this the next time -Raw oysters: yum! A dozen for $15 is a pretty good deal in my opinion when it's not happy hour. They only have blue point oysters though. Sizable and worth it! But come when they have $1 oysters!-Churros: o m g . I am SO glad my friend ordered these at the end because even though I was so stuffed, it was an amazing finish! I absolutely LOVED that they were stuffed with this dulce de leche type sauce, so that first bite was the best surprise! I wanted to get another order of these, but at $6 for 3 pieces--just a bit too steep. highly recommend though!!**HAPPY HOUR (weekdays 4-7, Sunday-Thursday 10pm-1am): Drink specials $3-5 and $5 apps!**BOTTOMLESS MIMOSA BRUNCH! Had my first experience last friday night and already know its going to become one of my favs in CT. Small cute space, we went at 10 on a friday night and had no problem getting one of the maybe 6-7 tables. Granted I didn't go walking around so maybe there is more. If not i can imagine there is a wait during peak times. Every food item we got was fantastic! Entree part of menu is a little small- hope they add to it. For apps we got the clams and fried yucca. Omg the chimichurri sauce the yucca comes with is delicious! It was a good sized order and my bf really contemplates ordering another. Clams too were good size- 12 clams- and in a yummy cilantro broth. For entrees we shared the lobster tacos ($16) and lobster grilled cheese (i believe also $16). The grilled cheese was so freaking good. 4 thumbs up. Tacos were good as well but i would've preferred a jalepeno/lime sauce instead of the wasabi sauce but still good. Winner of the night was the churros! I didnt think i could do it as i was stuffed after the entrees but after one bite I gladly ate my half of the 3 churros. Hot crispy outside, soft caramel filled inside. Words cant describe the heaven of these churros. We both agreed we would be back and soon. They seem to have a great happy hour too (with drink and app specials, including dollar oysters on certain days i think), might try that out tomorrow.Overall really impressed and cant wait to try more! After watching this location go through a revolving door of forgettable and quickly-shuttered places it's nice to finally have a worthwhile place move in.Barracuda does Columbian and Columbian inspired pub fare. Very solid and everything I've tried so far has been pretty good. The yucca fries and breakfast hash are especially good, as are burgers. Dollar oysters during their TWO daily happy hours. Woo.Brunch is nice too. Brunch burger, with fried egg and (requested) chorizo link, was a hangover-busting satisfaction-bomb with a representative from every meat animal. Won't get the lobster Benedict again, though. Very tasty, for sure, but portioned out for a sober child who went to bed on time.Gotta get the oyster shooter, one of the best I've had. We have been here several times now, and overall I am really happy with this restaurant. It blows its predecessors out of the water. We have gone just for drinks, for dinner, and for drinks and tapas at happy hour and the quality of the dishes has been consistently outstanding. They have a lot of happy hours and they are all a great deal--delicious half price tapas, cocktails and desserts, and generously portioned too! Food Favorites: the bbq pork arepas are addictive and perfect. Unlike the sweet and sticky (and often mushy) arepas from Ay! Arepa, the arepas at Barracuda are savory, crisp on the outside, and perfectly mealy on the inside. And the pulled pork on top is so tender and the sauce is so tangy. We've ordered it every time and it's always on point. Other noteworthy items: the chorizo pineapple and pepperjack flatbread is yummy and generously portioned for the price. The chorizo mac and cheese was smooth and creamy but not heavy, with nice big chunks of chorizo and a huge shareable portion (it comes in its own 'mini' dutch oven). The yuca frita with chimichurri is a real crowd pleaser. Easily the best yuca frita in town by a mile, and also generously portioned. Also, I have yet to find an authentic Cuban sandwich in New Haven, but theirs is the closest thing to one (if not for the weird heaping mustard) that you will find in this town... and still delicious in its own right. Cocktails: Best mojito in New Haven, hands down. I used to go to Pacifico when I wanted a mojito that came close to the ones I grew up with, but no more. The bartenders at Barracuda really take their time to develop the flavors and it shows--perfectly muddled mint, lime, sugar and rum in just the right balance (and served in the right glass!). The guava martini and medianoche cocktail are also delicious. They also have  a modest but interesting beer and wine list. Dessert: Oh, the dessert! The churros are amazing. Amazing. Amazing. Fried perfection rolled in cinnamon sugar with some kind of heavenly butterscotch filling. The other stuff is probably good too. But every time we've gone we're too tempted by the churros to try anything else. I did have a bite of the tres leches cake once. I liked it better than Oaxaca's (Oaxaca puts banana liquor in theirs, gross).Ambience: It's a long and narrow space with the bar on one side and high booth tables on the other, and quite clean. There was someone cleaning the tables constantly. Every time we have gone, by the end it has been pleasantly full of customers (lively but not cramped, no line or waiting time). There are posters from all over Latin America lining the walls, and comfortable, warm lighting. The booths are comfy too.So why 4 stars and not 5 stars? Because I can't give 4.5 stars. Because the waitstaff service is hit or miss. They always smile, but the time it takes from order to plate varies, and the amount of times they check in varies a lot. One time the waitress was excellent--attentive but not intrusive, friendly, no mistakes, knowledgeable about the menu. Another time, there was some confusion about which person would ring up our check, because two different guys took orders from us when the other wasn't around. Sounds like good teamwork and it ensured people were checking in with us so we were happy, but apparently they didn't notice someone else was also following up and so they were unhappy with their coworker for poaching their ticket and it showed. If they had one more person maybe that wouldn't happen. But another time, we got there right at the start of happy hour when they were nearly empty, and we were there for fifteen minutes before anyone took our drink order, and another 15 minutes before they came back to take our food order. The waitor was still nicer than most New Haven waitors (though the best waitor in New Haven is Frank from Miya's), he just did not check in very much at all. Staff: They could probably use one more waitstaff person, or one faster multitasking person. Then the owner might not have to do so much. We saw her making drinks at the bar, checking in with customers, preparing dishes, busing tables--everything. You can tell she is committed to her business. She was also really friendly and remembered us from a previous visit and gave us a drink on the house. Her attentiveness won us over. I hope this place lasts. With just a couple of service tweaks, they would decimate their competitors. So the name of the place is actually pretty fitting. More...

This place is great. The service is a little slow because I think they are short staffed, but their food and drinks are good. I stopped in with my mom for dinner. We ordered drinks and we both could not resist the temptation of the lobster grilled cheese sandwich. It was delicious. Mmmmmm...melted manchego.I went again with some girlfriends for happy hour. What a fantastic deal! We ordered a bunch of appetizers and small plates: the flat bread, yucca frita, chorizo mac and cheese. All of this with a round of sangrias made for a great night out. I highly recommend a stop! More...

Man was this good!Everything we had, or consumed with ravenous pleasure, was super tasty and beautifly presented.I'm a tad weary to be too enthusiastic as they are still fairly new, our server was granola quirky & easily flustered but super pleasant, and we did not have the pleasure of enjoying any dinner entres. However, all of our small plate apps were very good, bar the empanadas (not that they were bad necessarily, just not the best we've had nor the tastiest). The Tuna Tar Tar was both visually pleasing and delicious. The Arepas are small discs of golden fried rich filling goodness which we had w both BBQ pork (tender, flavorful) and the meaty sliced mushrooms. Now yucca frita may not be a marvel & rather common but these, oh these! Were fried & seasoned perfectly. The creamy chimichiri dip is mind blowing. We couldn't get enough of it.We tried a variety of cocktails, and oh yes do try their cocktails, were stong and creative w a list of fresh nectors & tropical juices. The proprietor is visual and hands on. She visited our table to honestly get our feed back & to share her enthusiasum & recipes from her kitchen. The interior is comfortable w a modern leaning & traditional Latio warmth. Can't wait to go back for dinner! We just finished a brunch here and loved every bite! The burger was perfect. The yuca fries were way better than potatoes. But my favorite was the mini breakfast sliders: soft fluffy mini biscuits filled with sharp cheese, crispy bacon, and perfectly runny eggs. So delicious! Our server was pleased as punch to be there, and just an adorable little lady. I sort of wish there had been music playing, as that felt like the only thing missing. But overall, great place and so cheap! More...

With the song by Heart playing in my head, my friend and I went in for Happy Hour (4-7 and 10-12), bookending a "paint your own wine glass while drunk" event down the street.   The sangria is really great - fairly strong, and good flavor, and the $5 apps were well-portioned, even if there are only a few on the happy hour list.  We ordered the yucca fritas, pulled pork arepas, chorizo mac and cheese, and the mushroom and honey flatbread (this isn't on the $5 menu).  The flatbread was phenomenal - definitely worth the extra few dollars.  Aside from the mac and cheese taking a bit longer than the rest of the food, and the chorizo being slightly sparse, the I can't find something bad to say about the food or drinks.  Good food, good drinks, great company - you can't ask for much more than that! The service was friendly, decently prompt, and not pushy, which was really nice, considering both times we were there, it was fairly busy.  I rarely make it to that side of town, but if I am, I'd be happy to stop in again. I tried the brunch here yesterday. First order, the bottomless mango mimosas. Delicious! My friend had the passion fruit which was good as well. The staff did a good job of keeping me refilled, definitely bang for your buck.  I opted for breakfast food although the menu does offer more lunch options. I had the chicken breakfast burrito which came with scrambled eggs and guacamole, salsa & sour cream on the side. It had good flavor and i dont know why i haven't  put guacamole on my eggs before -loved it. Instead of standard home fries they are serving yucca home fries. They are well seasoned, tasty and refreshing to try something new at breakfast. My friend had the breakfast burger with fried egg and chorizo on top. I have no idea how he ate the whole thing! I will definitely be going back. More...

Cozy, intimate setting, delicious food and drinks, reasonable prices. Can't go wrong with that. We tried the lobster tacos and pulled pork arepas, both of which were great. Media Noche cocktail was also really good. The menu is not too extensive but has a good variety of small and larger plates so it's good for those nights when you're with a group and no one really knows what they feel like eating. More...

On Thursday evening, one of my darlings and I were on a quest to grab dinner before going to Jojo's for tea and study time - She picked Barracuda as we walked by the restaurant. We arrived at 5:45pm and were seated promptly. The happy hour was in session - $5 small plates and $1 per oyster. We ordered Yucca Frita, Chorizo Mac & Cheese, Arepas (pork), Mussels, and four oysters on the half-shell to share. The Yucca Fritas were delicious, served with a chimichurri sauce (which was pretty good). I only wish they had not overdone the seasoning salt - it was too much. The Chorizo Mac & Cheese was served hot, creamy, and slightly zing-y, and in an adorable stoneware baking dish. The mussels were cooked very well and served with a fabulous garlic sauce. The oysters were priced nicely. I ate mine naked and found them to be mild and smooth - they could have been a bit more fleshy and perhaps without a few residual grains of sand/shell - but for the price, they were excellent. Our favourite was the Arepas! We ordered the pork (my friend hates mushrooms) and found them to be filling, made well, and with delicious flavour. The service was great. It took a little longer than anticipated for our food to reach our table (hopefully it will be faster next time), but it wasn't terribly long. Later we met the owner (Sonya), who was lovely. I really like Barracuda's intimate atmosphere, great food, and good service. Recommendations: -Come for happy hour (more bang for your buck)-Order the pork Arepas-Err on the side of coming a little earlier than peak dinnertime (630pm on a weekday became suddenly crowded)-Nice date placeVerdict:I will absolutely return! Great food, great atmosphere. More...

Wow this place has one of the best happy hours in town! The drinks are $5 and one time it was really nice and strong but the other time it was kind of sweet and watered-down. The service is good and the food is amazing! You can't really beat $1 oysters and $5 mussels during HH. I can't believe this place isn't absolutely filled with people every time I go like Prime 16 is. More...

Food: 4/5 | Ambiance 3.5/5 | Service 4/5 | Return Likelihood: HighOne-liner: Great Happy Hour specials + Dollar oysters = Happy customerMulti-liner: This corner might have finally met its match. Having seen three restaurants in occupy that location in as many years made me a little wary when Barracuda opened its doors to quiet fanfare. Multiple satisfying visits later, I have a little more hope. The Happy Hour here is so worthwhile and where else in New Haven can one find good oysters, let alone $1 oysters? Enough said.Food:Disclaimer -- I've only had their happy hour menu (weekdays 4 - 7 and 10 - 1), but I've had everything on that menu multiple times. To note: there is enough food in each of these to be a meal in of itself. Sonia, the owner, comes in early to make a lot of her own sauces and recipes which is obvious from the quality of the food. - The Yucca Frita is just the right amount of crispy on the outside and moist on the inside but Sonia's homemade guac sauce takes the cake. I can eat that sauce by itself it's so good. - The Chorizo Mac & Cheese come in a cute little crock pot, is a blend of 3 cheeses, spicy bites of chorizo and (ask before you quote me on this) creamy without flour additives. - There was no skimping on quantity in the Mussels dish which was enough for two meals, and the BBQ Pork Arepas (3 in a dish) were amazing. The arepas are made freshly by Sonia and have great mouth feel and consistency that is different than the arepas I've had in New Haven. - The flatbreads (~8in in diameter) are $2 more than the above items at $7. The mushroom truffle flatbread was crisp and flavorful, but nothing too special compared with everything else on the HH menu. - The Oysters. $1 on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday and are apparently freshly obtained directly from a supplier every morning. They were sizable, very creamy and--who am I kidding..they're a dollar and delicious.Drink:A small number of beers on tap but a stocked bar with a number of specialized cocktails. Have not yet tried the cocktails or wines.Service: Attentive and knowledgeable.Ambiance:Looks the same as its predecessors with high seated tables along one side and the bar along the other. Would call ahead if you have a large group coming in though since most of the tables are for two and they would need to put multiple together for a bigger party. More...

I have to give them five stars. We've been back since my initial review, and it's safe to say that this is one of my favorite restaurants in the area. The atmosphere, the staff, the food, everything is outstanding. This time around we stuck with the chorizo mac & cheese, which was just as good as the first time. We also tried out the empanadas, and the winner in that dish was the picante sauce. Within the last few months I've discovered my love for Colombian hot sauce, and oh my god, this one blew every other Colombian hot sauce I've tried out of the water. Absolutely delicious, perfect mix of flavor and heat (try adding it to the mac & cheese, thank me later!). They should sell this stuff by the jar, seriously, I'd buy it in bulk. We split the lobster grilled cheese, and what a terrible mistake that was. It was so good that we almost ordered another one! It was packed with delicious, fresh lobster, and tons of flavor. I'm not sure what kind of seasoning they used in the sandwich, but it complimented the lobster perfectly. Whenever I've had a lobster grilled cheese in the past, it was super cheesy with a few chunks of lobster throughout. This was the total opposite, the lobster completely outweighed the cheese to the point where I'm still not sure there was even any cheese in my sandwich. It was hands down the best sandwich I've ever had, and my boyfriend agreed. This was so good that I likely won't be trying anything else on the menu anytime soon, and my boyfriend and I will not be splitting this dish ever again. Something that stood out was the fact that not only did the owner recognize me the second I walked in the door from my first Yelp review, but she was also very hands on in helping out at the bar, the servers, and introducing herself to each table. Barracuda definitely seems like a well oiled machine, and it shows in their service and their food. I can't wait to try out their brunch menu. More...

Just awesome!!! Chill and relaxed atmosphere. Great ambiance! Small menu, but super yummy, amazing chorizo mac and cheese and arepas with shredded pork! Great drinks, Besame and Guava martini were our favorite. Also, you should try a shot of aguardiente, a typical Colombian drink! Wonderful staff and owners. A NEW gem in the area! It is rare that I find a restaurant where absolutely everything on the menu tempts me, and when I do order it - am even more blown away than I expected. I have been in SEVERAL times since this amazing addition to Downtown New Haven opened recently and they sure seem to have it right so far!If I had to choose my favorite meals here, I would probably start with the Blackened Tuna sandwich cooked Medium with Cajun fries! The tuna is perfect! Not to mention the creamy horseradish sauce that comes on top. Next up for me would probably be the Flatbreads.. Ultimately torn between the Mushroom, Manchego, Honey and Truffle oil one and the Chorizo, Pineapple and Pepperjack one. Let's not forget about the Arepas! The Mushroom are to die for. The atmosphere and ambiance are perfect for a date or fun night out and the bar is beautiful. Their specialty cocktails are one of a kind (like the ancho chile mangotini) and the bartender always serves them with a smile and fun chatter. This place has quickly become my new favorite restaurant in New Haven! ...I may be biased because I love their food AND two happy hours a day. Way to go Barracuda!!! More...

I am so, so happy this place opened up around the corner from my apartment! The owner, Sonia, is so sweet. Her years of experience as a chef and helping others open up very successful restaurants in the area  have served her well in opening up Barracuda. It's clear that Sonia cares deeply about providing quality to her customers.I've been to Barracuda three times in the last few weeks, and each time I am impressed by the service, the food, and the welcoming atmosphere. The first time my partner and I visited was for a soft opening. Though we had just eaten, Sonia was kind enough to share her vision for the place and show us the future menu. The second time we visited, we went for happy hour. The happy hour is one of the best in the area. $5 margaritas (delicious!!!) and a discounted menu of select food items. We were stuffed from just a few apps. The yucca frita is to die for. Such a wonderful combination of crisp in the outside, tender on the inside. The chimchurri sauce is a nice compliment. I had the chicken sandwich, which was also incredibly flavorful. I returned two days later with a friend and we shared a bunch of apps. The guac and plantain chips were yummy, as well as the arepas and empanadas.Tonight, however, takes the cake! We were coming home late from the gym 1130, and couldn't find anywhere that was open for food. Even though it was clear that there weren't any food patrons, Sonia was kind enough to makes us food herself! I had the veggie burger (soft consistency but I loved it) and my partner had the regular burger (he also enjoyed his). The quality of the entire dining experience at Barracuda is so high. It also doesn't hurt that they have a wide selection of craft beer as well as interesting cocktails. We will be frequenting this place... probably a bit too much for my wallet to handle.Kudos to this amazing place! More...

Short review: very fresh food, $1 oysters during happy hour. Happy. I will come here oftenLong review:I decided to write a long review because I'll likely come here very often with my wife for date nights, and  that means I really like the place. The service is great and attentive, which is always great, and doesn't happen very often in New Haven. The food is awesome. $1 oysters during happy hour would be enough of a reason for us to come again, and so is the fact that we live less than a block away. BUT, everything else we tried here was great. Since I mentioned freshness, the oysters and the avocado sashimi (as in, an avocado filled with raw fish and surrounded by a relatively spicy and sweet sauce as well as some) are really refreshing and pretty great to have after a long day. The avocado/sashimi color contrast (bright green/pink) adds to that impression of freshness. We had a chicken sandwich that was great, and it's kinda hard to make a chicken sandwich great if you ask me, but the spices and condiments helped a lot. The blackened tuna burger was also top-notch.The yucca fries are great and come with a guacamole dipping sauce (if you've never had yucca fries but love potato fries you don't know what you're missing), and their texture is the way it should be, super crispy on the outside and soft on the inside.
