We are using Aileen for in-home private lessons and it is life changing. It turns out you can teach old dogs new tricks. She's basically training us to train them: words to use, techniques with treats (everything is pawsitive reinforcement based) and gestures that work. We're training two at a time and our trainer has been so patient, flexible and kind. Would recommend 15/10 times. More...

As a first time puppy parent, I was nervous about finding the right class for my mini goldendoodle Mia, and I'm so glad we went with Athens. We did puppy pre-school with Aileen and Danny, and it was the perfect mix of learning and socialization. Mia is the only dog in our house, and she was very fearful of the other pups when we first started. She would often try to hide under me during playtime or go off in the corner. With Danny and Aileen's help, she's finally coming out of her shell!Because the classes are so small (fluctuated between 3-5 dogs while we were there), we got the perfect blend of individual attention and group learning. The trainers demonstrate the new skill, and then go around the room to give individual guidance as you practice. There's also plenty of opportunity to ask questions about other training challenges you might be dealing with at home (I.e. puppy biting). Mia was a quick learner when it came to the "training" part of class, but a bit slower on the socialization part. Per Danny's recommendation, we stayed in puppy class longer than 5 classes, to improve her socialization. I really appreciated this! He could've easily moved us on to the next class right away (new revenue), but instead adjusted the plan to make sure Mia was ready before we moved on. Excited to start the next level of training! Andrea was our trainer for Kaleb's puppy class and she was amazing! Although it is a group training class, she does encourage everyone to ask questions before or after each class session. She is very knowledgeable and encourages only positive reinforcement. We learned a lot about dog behaviors and Kaleb is doing great! Andrea goes above and beyond even outside of training if you ever have any questions or concerns about your pup. We look forward to taking their intermediate and CGC class! More...

Had a private consultation with Andrea. My fiancé and I had some concerns about our dogs behavior and fearfulness at the dog park. Andrea was such a help! She met us at the dog park and gave us pointers for how to make our pup more comfortable around other dogs, how to diffuse tense situations, and how to read her body language. She provided guidance as to when to offer praise/rewards, when to intervene, and when to let her do her thing. Our dog did great and we learned a lot.In addition to addressing the issues we were more concerned about, Andrea also practiced some recall drills with us and leash training. More...

Danny is a rock star! He truly understands dogs of all breeds and how to train them. He is very patient with both the humans and the dogs. And, he is firmly committed to positive reinforcement and rewarding good behavior and prohibits any hitting of the dogs. His classes are well-structured and reasonably priced. His teaching methods work. Our 6 month old Chocolate Lab is a rescue who was extremely skiddish. She didn't even want to get out of the car, treats were of no interest, and she had had very little social interaction with other dogs. After a very short time, she had gained confidence, learned how to play with the other dogs, and was learning the various commands. We were so pleased with the results of the beginner class, that we signed up for the intermediate class. She is now just over a year old and is well-trained because of Danny. He is very patient and truly understands each dog's needs and what their behaviors are exhibiting. Our dog's behaviors have improved significantly. As Danny explained to us, it does take significant amounts of repetitive training and even when you think they aren't going to get it, you just have to stick to the training and eventually it will click. I adopted my Formosan/Lab mix, Silvie about a year ago and took the basic training with another company...Silvie already had the basics down so that class was more of a refresher. After months of trying to walk Silvie and working on her indoor/outdoor etiquette myself i realized i needed help with a lot of things such as: jumping on people, racing out the door, barking/lunging at people and other animals, pulling while walking, etc...Obviously, what i knew and how i approached Silivie wasn't making a difference and DVRing all the those Cesar 911 wasnt helping either. :( This time, i decided to go with Athens as i was looking more for individualized, hands-on training at home and not a classroom. Also, the other company i went with told me that Silvie would not be good with other animals or a dog park.  Her assessment of Silvie was on the 3rd session of training when another dog (from class) lunged and barked at her...which I believe put her in defense mode the next 3 sessions and had to isolate Silvie from the others. That didnt make us feel welcome or confident considering Silvie was raised with other animals before i adopted her and generally, has a sweet demeanor.  Well, after only a few sessions with Athens i already see a change and learned what i've been doing wrong! Actually, what convinced me to sign up for multiple sessions is when Danny came over for the consultation...WHOA!  What i've been trying to teach her the last few months, Danny showed me within 15 minutes of being there! Also, he proved that Silivie is not a "mean dog" and can do fine...and her demeanor has more to do with fear. So if you're deciding on who to choose for dog training, Athens is it! Danny is very patient, accommodating/flexible with training, uses a lot of analogies so the owners can understand how to reinforce positive behavior, and instills confidence in the training and your fur-baby.  Money well spent!Note: if you plan on adopting a companion for your "fur-baby", consider going thru: Adopt a Doggie in Castro Valley  yelp.com/biz/adopt-a-dog…They're great! This is long overdue (about 10 months overdue...)About a year ago, my boyfriend and I rescued two dogs from Merced. First we rescued a rat terrier/daschund mix that we named Marley, which turned out to be a befitting name. Albeit cute, he was a loud and sassy dog that insisted on doing things his own way. His hobbies included wreaking havoc in the house, emotionally terrorizing guests and certain family members, and trying to escape.A few months later, we rescued a black lab that we named Lando (because who doesn't love Star Wars?). Similar to Marley, Lando was also loud and sassy. His hobbies included sitting on your face when you tried to lay down, destroying everything that he could put in his mouth, and bark when you're in REM sleep. Both dogs also enjoyed peeing/pooping in the most inconvenient places (i.e. THE CAR) and pulling on the leash. After a month of the emotional torment, I decided to contact Danny. Almost one year later, both dogs have become the most well-behaved dogs I thought I could only dream of having. Marley has become more accepting of guests and other family members, and knows the basic commands (i.e. sit, down, stay, wait, come, leave it) even in an environment that could be considered distracting. Lando knows the basic commands as well, along with some tricks (i.e. spin, turn, beg, jump through a hula hoop) . And despite his size, he has become somewhat of an indoor dog, which is something I didn't think could ever happen. Both dogs walk alongside you on the leash, and have not attempted to run away in months. But most of all, both dogs are potty trained. However, we did not reach this point without taking the time to train them as well. The private sessions with Danny provided us with the necessary information to train the dogs on a daily basis. Do not expect to see much progress if you do not take the time to train them as well. My boyfriend and I continue to train them whenever we can. And as a result, we find our dogs becoming more and more well-behaved. I have absolutely zero regrets investing in dog training with Danny. More...
