My wife and I are both vegetarian, however we go to Amani’s because their chefs always create something delicious for us as vegetarians. Beyond the manner in which we are treated by the chefs the wait staff the hosts and all the employees in general provide a positive atmosphere . More...

Always love coming here. The last time I was here the cheese plate blew us away and during this visit it was still delicious just not as amazing as our previous visits. The lobster pot pie was amazing!!

We went for our wedding anniversary and had a nice time. The server was a little "flighty" and kept forgetting things...I've never heard "I'm sorry" so many times...but her heart was in the right place even if her head wasn't. The food was excellent! We've been here many times and are always impressed with how John & Travis kick up their game. It's definitely a destination restaurant you should try. More...

The entire dining experience was wonderful, as it usually is. We were seated promptly and immediately attended to. The room was cool and comfortable and the menu selection (and features) were varied and fresh. We each had three courses, all different and all delicious. We were not hurried and lingered a bit after we finished. Great place! More...

The lobster shepherd's pie was outrageously good, Oysters Amani didn't disappoint. One of our favorite places.

20 July 2019

This was our second trip. Loved the food just as much as the first time, but the service wasn’t as strong as our first visit. I think this was our server in particular - toward the end of the meal we had trouble finding her and getting her attention to ask about dessert, get the check, etc. she also didn’t offer he complimentary limoncello with dessert that we had last time and saw others serving. We’ll be back and hopefully the subpar service will be a one time anomaly. More...

The food was amazing, highly recommend going for the food, and frankly that’s what you are there for anyway! . However, we must have caught the restaurant on a night in a heat wave when their air conditioning was broken as it was really hot and humid in the restaurant. They turned on ceiling fans and moved air around but it was quite warm. I’m sure on a good day the full experience is amazing. More...

the place is small, it was "very warm", and the tables are close together. its not a private dining experience if that is what your looking for...but what it is, is the best food you will find anywhere near to Downingtown. I have eaten here a few times now and the food has been exquisitely perfect. the chefs are amazing and their cuisine is delectable. i highly recommend this restaurant. More...

It was a wonderful meal beginning to end. There was one table that had a lot of people that appeared to be quite drunk and loud but everything else was wonderful. Zack was an incredibly mature, knowledgeable server and I will request him when I return. More...

I came to this restaurant after shopping in town. I did not have a RSVP but the hostess gladly gave us a nice seat.We had the pork belly and grilled oysters appetizer, jerk chicken soup and the short rib entree.Everything was amazing and delicious! I really love how the waitress was very attentive and took away our finished plates. Oh and the bread was warm and was served with a yummy oil to dip. I would definitely come back when I am in town again. The restaurant is BYOB and they have mixers for purchase! They looked delicious.I would definitely recommend this restaurant if you are looking for some scrumptious food. More...

2nd time there. Service is awesome. Chef creations are out of this world delicious. This man can cook. Had the same server as the first time, though I can’t remember her name, she’s probably the most smiley person I’ve ever met lol.

Just stopped in for the 10 year anniversary 5 course dinner last Friday. Been a few years since I had been by ( probably been in 10-15 times thru the years and have to say everything was top notch and just as good as all the other trips thru the years.Happy anniversary to a great business run by some of the nicest and most friendly people and staff in the area. As a top chef in Chester County for so many years it's almost routine  but guaranteed food and service never disappoint even after 10 years. More...

This is one of our favorite restaurants. Great for a quiet, romantic meal and excellent for out of town guests who are foodies like us. Our meal on Tuesday evening was outstanding in every respect. We shared an escargot dumpling appetizer that was sensational. We enjoyed main courses of Scottish salmon and the special pork chop addition to the menu, thinking nothing could top that escargot appetizer...but they did. I'm still dreaming about this dinner--it was THAT good. Charming, intimate restaurant with a lot of talent in the kitchen. More...

My wife and go to a few different places for special occasions. Amani is one of those places. It never disappoints. The calamari is tempura breaded and fried in duck fat. Spectacular. The duck is excellent as well. Bread pudding for her desert and chocolate banana creme brûlée for mine. Both were spectacular. 6/28/2019Just came back from Amani. Wife and I ordered from the 10th anniversary menu. Wife got the gazpacho and I started with an amazing Caribbean chowder. Coconut milk base with scallops, shrimp, pineapple and scallions. It was sweet and savory and really got the juices flowing. Next we both had escargot encrutè with mushroom purée and a quail egg. It was earthy and buttery and the pastry was soft but held up to the butter wine sauce the dish was excellent. For our entrees we both had steak with smashed potatoes and shishito peppers. Now I've had steak a thousand times and this was probably the best steak I've ever had. Perfectly cooked and seared with char lines and burnt ends. Dessert was an unbelievable s'mores pots-de-creme that would leave any chocoholic quivering and weeping with delight. All in all it was an excellent dinner, one of the best experiences I've had at Amani. The Chef/owner Jon Amann really out does himself over and over. His amazing instincts with pairing flavors and creating eclectic menus that never fail to produce multiple options for the most discerning foodies. He truly is one of the most talented young chefs in the Delaware Valley. More...

Excellent dinner! Scottish salmon, cooked and seasoned perfectly. Jumbo shrimp over linguini with mushrooms and artichokes...delicious! Lump crab manicotti outstanding! This would be the best restaurant in the are if the noise level could be lowered to a reasonable level. Noise reducing covers could be added to the walls and ceilings that might enable diners to hear each other during the meal! Can't understand why the owner does not take such simple steps that would result in such a much better dining experience. More...

We’ve been big fans for some time now but there was a bit of a let down this time around. The service was a bit slow and we felt ignored during our time there. We've enjoyed Amani's quite a few times and last night was no exception Everything is at a high level, with great attention to details like providing very nice bread rolls, along with an olive oil dip and an inventive amuse bouche. I haven't been disappointed in any entree, but last night I had a sous vide chicken breast that was amazing.  I sampled my brother-in-law's ramen with pork belly, which was also just right. The BYOB aspect of Amani's is not to be ignored. You can pair your meal with excellent wines, at retail store prices, with no corkage fee. That alone makes Amani one of the best bargains in our area for fine dining. My wife and I shared a Willamette Valley Pinot Noir that would have cost at least $60 in another restaurant.Unfortunately, our dinner was marred by a loud, cackling woman at the next table. She was so loud I think it was heard by passing truck drivers. This wasn't Amani's fault, so I have not dinged them in this review, but damn, woman, have some courtesy toward your fellow humans. Me and my boyfriend came here for my birthday. We had a reservation and they had our table ready when we came in. We brought our own wine, which they do not charge to open. We ordered the poke - it was amazing, it had this interesting hummus and a good amount of poke. I ordered the grilled sirloin - it was so tender, it came with blue cheese mashed potatoes and I've got to say these are the best mashed potatoes that I've EVER HAD!! My boyfriend got the short rib bolognese - that was amazing! Lastly we got the pomegranate blueberry cheesecake - its the best one!! We would definately be back here again!! First experience Sat Night at Amani's.   I've read other reviews and the common theme was their table management.   They use a two seating plan.  One at 6 and one at 8.   We arrived at 7:50.   We sat at 8:15.     This seems the norm rather than the exception.    I'd expect it won't change since customers linger and they have limited tables.Food was really good. Braised short rib, halibut, salmon, salads all good. the cheesecake appetizer was unusual and good.    Same for the mushroom bruschetta.    Pecan peach cobbler desert -  no threat of more than 2 pecans but very good including a dollop of vanilla ice cream.Atmosphere is ok for my taste.  They got the food and service down but it's a little tight.  Service was very attentive. Entree pricing is reasonable. Salads seem $3 high - but it's a byob so they have to make it somewhere... overall I'd go back if I was in the mood for a fish or eclectic beef or pork entree.    Feel like the early seating expectation should be that they will want your table at 8.  The second seating expectation should be that the 6pm folks will probably take their time.   Enjoy More...

So tried Amani's for the first time after it popped up on Open Table when I was looking for restauarants around us.  So glad we did!  We went on a Sunday early evening, only ones there (guessing since summer) so had very attentive, helpful service.  Had oysters (server recommended the types - again he was very patient and helpful with our questions).  Husband had tomato/mozzarella focaccia and loved it!  Both entrees very good as well (swordfish and shrimp) and we split a dessert (chocolate waffle).   Everything was very good!  We enjoyed the quaint atmosphere but did think if it was busy (see Fri/Sat can be) that it might be loud since tables are closer together.  Do think its a little pricey considering the portions (fine with us do not like tons of food, like to try more rather than quantity) but think it kind of evens out as they did not charge a corkage fee - which many BYOB's are starting to do now.  We will definitely be going back! This restaurant is located near our home and we often said that we should try it.  We loved it and wish we had tried it sooner.  It's a small intimate setting and our server - Mandy - was wonderful.  She was very friendly and knowledgeable about the menu and specials.  The chefs were accommodating with my dairy allergy and worked around my order.  We both had incredible appetizers and main dishes and will definitely be repeat customers.  Mandy did mention that Fridays and Saturdays tend to be very busy and they can rarely accommodate walk-ins.  We made a reservation on a Sunday evening and found it very relaxed. Good quality lunch with some good execution and a bit of predictability.I ordered the fried calimari app and the Reuben. The fried calimari was awesome. The calimari itself was delicate and soft, unlike the usual chewy renditions and copout Italomerican gravy joints. The cephalopod was paired with little bits of sweet micro peppers. All the flavors were light and sweet to balance the fried breading of the calimari. The crisp bite of the calimari finished with the soft interior was one of my favorite takes on the classic app.My main entree was a standard Reuben. I suppose there isn't much to write about. It was pretty good. The flavors were predictable. The bread was ok, not perfect. It maintained a bit too much chew and robustness on the bite. The meat on the sandwich begged for a bit more braised fat globules. As with the other recent reviews, I apologise profusely for the lack of photography. More...

I have been here for dinner which was fantastic and have been wanting to go back ever since.  Last Sunday we had the chance to go back and enjoyed a lovely Easter brunch.  The place is small so be sure to make reservations. It is BYOB and we brought champagne.  They brought us orange juice and only charged $1 per person drinking which was not bad.  They have a lot of appetizers and entrees to choose from including many sweet and savory options. We started off with muffins which came with your choice of 2 flavors out of four. The muffins were huge and it was enough to share with 4-5 people. For my entrée, I went with the breakfast burrito which was stuffed with egg, small tomoatoes, sausage and barley. It was very tasty although I wish it had some greens inside. Also it did not come with a side and for $13 this was pretty pricy.  Others in our party got the hamburger (a little over cooked), frittata of the day which was made with lobster, and the eggs benedict (the hollandaise sauce was whipped which was not that great).  Everyone was pleased with their meal and the service was fantastic. Fantastic food! Not a single thing we'd change in food. In our first visit, we randomly tried few things and they were just right. We started with Maine Lobster Bisque Soup for wife and CrispyPoint Judith Calamari to share. Soup had right taste profile and not too creamy. Calamari was rightly done with red hot chili, scallions & olives - perfect balance of calamari, heat of chili and tartness of olives. It just worked. For main course, wife had Seared Gulf Jumbo Shrimp Étouffée - it came on bed of colorful Orzo and Cherry Tomato & Peppers. A colorful dish visually & taste wise. I had daily special of Crispy Skin Red Snapper on bed of risotto with large pieces of beetroots. The beetroots was perfect balance to the creamy taste of fish and risotto - right ingredient to clear your palate and avoiding the dish becoming too "creamy smooth".  The only dish that was meh was the dessert - Salted Caramel Creme Brûlée. Pork belly, oysters, calamari, flatbread and cheese board for our appetizers.. almost didn't have any room on our table, but everything was PERFECT. There wasn't anything we didn't like about it. Dinner we did steaks, lobster ravioli, halibut, quail, and pork. Again PERFECT. We all tried eachothers dishes, which was fun. Located on a corner of downtown Downingtown, you can't find better food than Amani's.  From the appetizers to desserts, it is a great experience.  Since it is BYOB, you can bring your own bottle of wine, alcohol, etc.  If you bring a bottle of your favorite spirits, Amani's has a list of vetted cocktails they can make.  This is the first time I have ever experienced a craft cocktail list using my own alcohol.  Couple that with the amazing cuisine, I would highly recommend Amani's. Overall, good. What I liked:- the farm to table concept, all of their produce and meats are provided by local farms. -creative, healthy/yet flavorful dishes- BYOB!!-open kitchen so you can observe the chefs making all the food -some parking provided in the back of the restaurant What could be improved:- artisanal cheese board left much to be desired- very little portions of cheese, jam, and bread for $18.- seating is tight - the noise volume can get loudWould definitely come back! My husband and I visited Amani's for our anniversary on July 27th. It certainly did not disappoint! The atmosphere of the restaurant was wonderful. Not many tables which is great because it truly allows the servers to give more attention to the guests. Our server was wonderful and very attentive. She also gave great recommendations on a variety of dishes. We loved the BYOB aspect (certainly saves money to be able to bring your own!) For an appetizer we tried the calamari and it was very good. For our entrées we had the duck breast and new york strip. I had the duck it was so tender and flavorful. The cherry sauce accompaniment was wonderful. For dessert we had the mango creme Brule. The chef also placed kiwi on top which was fantastic. We certainly will be going back in the future for special occasions! More...

Came here the first time for my birthday dinner with family. Food was so fresh and delectable. Had an arugula salad as an appetizer, then the main entree was blackened grouper. Simply divine. Thanks for a wonderful evening. I especially enjoyed the locals strolling in and everyone enjoying their meals. Will definitely be back. More...

My husband and I dined here the other night for the first time and we can't wait to go back. We were really blow away at just how great this place is. The food and service will be hard pressed to beat and the atmosphere was delightful. We started out with the pork belly appetizer; WOW. It was like soft, candied bacon and melted right in your mouth. My husband had the crab cakes with fresh string beans and fingerling potatoes and I had the filet with an oyster mushroom ragout, fingerling potatoes and cauliflower au gratin. Our meals were nothing short of outstanding. His crab cakes and veggies were so fresh and my steak was cooked to perfection. It could very well be the best steak I've ever had. Most of their ingredients come from local farms in the area which makes a big difference in the quality and taste. The food portions were filling and we were so full, but decided to split the espresso creme brûlée for dessert which had hazelnuts, pears and strawberries to top it off; it was amazing and well worth adding to our feeling of fullness. Our server, Erica, was a gem. She was upbeat but not overbearing and very attentive. She knew her stuff and was a super sweet girl who helped to make our experience that much more enjoyable. The space inside the restaurant is quaint, but not stuffy at all. The overall atmosphere is a fresh, country chic with an open kitchen. Prices are very reasonable and your meal will be well worth every penny. They are doing it right at this establishment and we can't wait to return! More...

Fantastic! If you are a foodie, or just love delicious food, you must go to this non-descript, corner slice of heaven in downtown Downingtown. Love that they are locally sourced and seasonal with their menu and will accommodate dietary needs/restrictions. My meal companions and I went for brunch on Saturday. We made a reservation but it wasn't crowded so not sure that's a "must do". I would imagine on a Sunday you need to. The outside of the restaurant is nothing spectacular but once you are inside, the hardwood floors, open kitchen and beautifully set tables make you feel like you are somewhere special.I wasn't on my game as much as I usually like to be and therefore don't have pictures of the TO DIE FOR grilled oysters or the HOUSE SMOKED salmon appetizers we started with. Succulent and tender are the words that first come to mind when describing both dishes. When you order the smoked salmon, don't expect to get thin slices like you would on a bagel. 3 generously thick pieces of house smoked (yes, HOUSE smoked!) salmon with varying accoutrements adorn the plate and just got better with every bite.  The grilled oysters were topped with spinach, panko crumbs, crimini mushrooms and an aged cheese that is making my mouth water just thinking about them. We shared them this time - next time (and there will be a next time) I'm ordering my own!  For our next course, I had the Belgian waffle topped with roasted apples and a vanilla cream. It was delicious. Hardy but not heavy. Waffle wasn't just made with white flour but I'm not sure it was whole wheat either. Whatever it was gave it a nice density without it being heavy or the flavor overbearing. My sister-in-law had the brioche stuffed French toast. Much more filling than my waffle, but again, excellent. The creamy filling was a bit tart and balanced out the sweetness of the syrup and bread nicely.  My daughter had the jumbo lump crab and baked eggs. LOTS of crab on this dish. Presentation was great and the eggs were cooked to perfection. We rounded out the meal with the warm, carmel apple pie a la mode and the lemon pudding cake. The apple pie was AMAZING. Light, flaky crust with a great combination of sweet and tart apples topped with delicious, local vanilla ice cream.  The lemon pudding cake was underwhelming compared to the rest of the meal because the cranberry compote on top overpowered any lemon flavor. Good, but wouldn't order again. The only reason I didn't give Amani's 5 stars was because of the lemon pudding cake and the service wasn't very good (our waiter was absent a lot). I struggled with this rating though because everything else was divine. 4.5 if I could. More...

4.5 - On our way back from visiting Longwood Gardens, we stopped at Amani's for dinner the Monday before Christmas (2015). Located in the heart of Downingtown, this BYOB is a small, cozy space with an attentive wait staff and creative menu. Our waiter was attentive, thoughtful and made us feel very welcome. From my research, I found the chef, Jonathan Amann, has won the "Best Chef in Chester County" for the past three years. The menu uses seasonally available local ingredients to create unique, flavorful dishes. To start, we ordered the grilled lamb ribs with a pear bourbon molasses glaze, sweet potato hash, & pear slaw and the baby arugula salad with a cranberry vinaigrette, pickled apples, cheddar curd & cinnamon chipotle dusted lavash shards to share. The lamb ribs were fall-of-the-bone, perfectly tender and flavorful. I'm not usually a rib person but these were exceptional. The late fall/winter themed salad had an extra tang and touch of sweetness from the cranberry and the lavash chards were an interesting, tasty addition. As for entrees, we both went with specials being highlighted that night - the bone-in pork chop special which featured an Allagash Black glaze and the pan-seared salmon with Kung Pao sauce, Chinese 5 spice carrots and scallion rice. The salmon was cooked just right to match my taste and the sauce. This dish, light but tasteful, was a great way to go. After our entrees were cleared, we ordered the lemon pudding cake with cranberry compote, and whipped cream to share. The cake is served in a round ramekin with the cranberry compote piled on top so don't be alarmed if you don't see any yellow (the lemon) when you're served it. The dessert was tasty however the tartness of the lemon and the cranberry could have used something to balance it out. I also ordered a cappucino to end the meal.  Overall, there is no question that I'd be open to returning here some day and I've already recommended it to family & friends in the area. More...

I had dinner there with my wife tonight and this is a really good little restaurant.  In addition to great food and service, my waiter Bob new the menu and specials without having to refer to a cheat sheet. His recommendations were spot on.  The rolls were warm with oil and seasonings.  We had oysters (delicious) and my wife had seafood while I had short ribs. I also had calamari.  Everything was prepared extremely well and with just a little surprise from the same fare at other restaurants.  My waiter also treated us to some complementary limoncello.  This is a great place do dine casually, maybe a little noisy, but definitely worth checking out.  Highly recommended More...

The BEST restaurant in Downingtown/West Chester (Period). My wife and I were there two weeks ago and we are still talking about the meal. I had the beef cheeks and she had a very enjoyable salmon. The service staff is on point. The price is beyond reasonable.  The decor is the only thing I feel they should change. They are not a cute little country farm to table anymore. They are a serious high end comparable to anything in philly restaurant. More...

I took my mother, father, and girlfriend here for a pre-mothers day.  I wanted somewhere that sourced locally where possible, was rated highly, and had a fun and creative menu-which was what I found here. The restaurant accepts reservations and I suggest you make them.  When making the reservation, ask to be outside if possible.  While the inside is fine, it can be quite loud, between the kitchen, the music, and the people. The food was all quite good.  Our entrees were lamb with Brussel sprouts, a New York Strip, duck, and beef ribs.  For appetizers, we had chicken wraps, oysters, a soup, and octopus.  And for dessert, banana bread pudding and creme brûlée.  All good portions, not too much nor too little.Complimentary limoncello, made in house, is served at the conclusion of the meal.Small rolls are complimentary at the start of the meal, and served with oil. When I went to the restaurant, the groups there seemed to be mixed primarily between elderly groups, couples in 40s, and groups of women in there 30s.  It may change based on the day of the week thoughThe staff were incredibly nice. As a foodie, I can't believe I am just now getting around to writing a Yelp review for this restaurant. My family, fiance and I eat here so regularly that it's no surprise when owners Janine and John stop by to chat about our meal, or their precious children. (By the way, if you really want to get on Chef John's good side, bring him some good old fashioned Knob Creek.) They have welcomed us from the beginning. Suffice it to say, I may be biased by now, but it's only because this place has stolen my heart and my tummy.Amani's BYOB, located in the heart of Downingtown, has a huge heart itself. From the decor, which changes seasonally and keeps the restaurant fresh and homey, to the knowledgeable and friendly wait staff, this restaurant hits every mark. We've had birthday dinners here, valentine's day dinner, my engagement party and we will evitably be having our rehearsal dinner here (which I am going to talk to Janine about tonight). We love this place. Some people frown on the BYOB status, but what could be better than your favorite wine chilled or uncorked at no fee, or your favorite cocktails mixed up for you as they have a selection you can pair your liquor with. BYOB is where it's at in my mind and Amani's is always willing to oblige your aperitif requests. (Remember the Knob Creek!)Always make a reservation. Always. The place is small and fills up quick! And why?John's food is amazing. Always a seasonal menu. Always additions to the already beautiful menu. Always blows my mind. American farm to table done impeccably. Out of the 20+ times we have eaten here, I can safely say I have never had a bad meal. I have one favorite from every season, but for Summer it's by far this Jamaican style conch soup with a coconut milk base. Lots if veggies, big chunks of conch and other seafood. It's a little sweet, a little spicy and downright super flavorful. And by the way, who else is doing things with conch in Chester County? No one I know.John puts his heart into his food, which is what makes the couple so friendly, and why we return so often. I hope nothing but great things for this restaurant always, and this wonderful family. More...

Celebrated Father's Day at Amani's BYOB in Downingtown. I have mixed feelings about the place-The Good1. Fresh-squeezed orange juice for mimosas- delicious!2. Awesome menu- a lot of different options, which all looked delicious.3. The breadbasket and homemade rhubarb jam were perfect.4. Service was really attentive up front, but slacked a little as the restaurant became more crowded. Took a while to get our check, weren't asked if we'd like another mimosa, etc.5. I highly recommend the mushroom and onion soup, and the pork belly eggs benedict. 6. Extremely reasonably priced for how high the quality of food was! The Bad1. Really loud, once the restaurant filled up.2. Servers need to enunciate, due to the volume. Most of my part had to ask for everything to be repeated.3.The salmon and eggs were both overcooked.4. Most of our Prosecco went unconsumed, as we had a round, and then the server stopped refilling. All in all, a really solid restaurant for brunch. I'd say there's room for improvement on some aspects! A friend was visiting me from Australia and we were looking for a place that served really good food.  The reviews for Amani's convinced us to try this one out, and I have to say that we were not disappointed one tiny bit.  My friend has eaten all over the world and so she knows tasty food when she tries it.  I, however, have not had the opportunity to try higher cuisine than simple family fare very often in my 68 years.  I must say that I was delighted by the quality and taste of the food I experienced here.  It started with a tasting of an avacado and bacon treat that I am not knowledgeable enough to describe, but I will say that the single complimentary bite was heavenly.  It melted in my mouth.  I next had a vidalia onion and mushroom soup that was truly the best onion soup I've ever tasted.  The broth was full-bodied and rich with just the right amount of seasoning.  My entree was a short rib (actually 2 large pieces) with chipotle grits and grilled carrots.  The carrots were the best I've ever had and the grits surprised me with how tasty they were, because I'm not usually fond of spicy food.  The rib meat was so tender it simply fell apart with my fork alone, but it was full bodied in flavor and delicious. My companion and I hesitated getting dessert based on how generous our portions were with our meal and how full we were, but gave in to the idea of a light refreshing sorbet.  We chose to share a Mixed Berry Sorbet which came with 3 generous scoops along with two halves of a perfect strawberry.  The Sorbet was full of flavor and absolutely delicious.  We may have been stuffed when we left, but it was worth every bite.Mustn't fail to mention our attentive and thoughtful waiter.  He made us feel very welcome and is an asset to the restaurant.  Overall, there is no question that I will return any time there is a special occasion and I want to give a friend or relative a real treat.  Two thumbs high up for this establishment. My husband and I have been going to Amani's since they first opened! We feel that we are very fortunate to have such an AMAZING farm to table BYOB restaurant very close to where we live.  Being the foodies that we are, we can honestly say this is the best  restaurant in Chester County (and in a lot of counties for that matter).  We have gotten to know both Chef Jonathan Amann & his wife, Jeanine, over the years.  Together, they run an amazing establishment that we are so happy to dine at and support!  Their staff is top-notch - from their hosts, to servers, to bread runners, cooks, etc - we are always impressed!  We love the ever-changing seasonal menus.  Every dish is made to order and carefully prepared bursting with tons of flavor.  The only negative I would say is falling in love with one of Chef's creations of the season and having to wait for it to return the following season.  This is a small & intimate restaurant with tables close together.  Some people might not like this, but we love it.  We have even gotten to know our fellow diners over the years.  Whenever we have family or friends coming in from out of town, we choose Amani's - our guests are always impressed.  So when looking for your next night out be sure to choose Amani's and you won't be disappointed. This place was absolutely fantastic. We started off with New Jersey oysters that were small but to die for. By far the cleanest oysters I have ever had with no grit and no salty taste. Additionally, we had the lobster spring rolls which were by far the best I have ever had. You could tell without a doubt the meat was fresh and prepared to perfection. For dinner, I had the special bass that was paired with a rice cake. Delicious. My guests had the salmon paired with sweet potato (fantastic) and my other guest had the special filet (also very good). For dessert we split the blueberry cobbler with vanilla ice cream on top and whipped cream on the side. The cobbler was warm and melt in your mouth while the ice cream smoothed out the taste. Overall, a wonderful experience although my only complaint was I couldn't hear the waiter because the 10+ women sitting behind us were having a fantastic time with their multiple bottles of wine (which I really can't blame them one bit)100% would recommend this restaurant to anyone in the area. First time at Amani BYOB...and it definitely won't be the last! Great atmosphere, the food was fabulous and the service was fantastic.! Bob was our server and I would ask for him again! He knew his stuff & was patient with questions & great about swapping sides & really putting the customers first! We started with the oysters & Bob's recommendations were perfect for us neophyte oyster eaters! I tried the Brussels sprouts salad..I had read previous reviews and I have to say..they took your comments to heart...the salad was not too salty & the flavor combinations were perfect. Also tried the artisanal cheese plate..local cheeses combined with an array of sauce/condiments that were really complimentary.. Excellent & perfect for sharing. My husband and I had the crab cakes and salmon off the menu...the crab cakes were all crab! Perfectly seasoned & the sides were the perfect compliment. The salmon was incredible...quite possibly one of the best I've had, and I loooove salmon, so order it everywhere! Sweet potato mash & Brussels sprouts with it were the perfect combination. Our friends tried the specials of crispy black bass & the New York dry aged strip steak...and they raved about both! The food is constantly great.  I like that the menu changes buy really great items tend to remain, like the calamari, which is amazing.  I'm a semi regular here.  Service is great, Rick especially.  Any night of the week is good, but I think it's a noticeable improvement when the owner, John, is there and cooking.  The short ribs are awesome too.  My downsides are seating can be tight, and when it's cold sitting near the door isn't always warm.  There is warm bread served, which is good, not great (I think the bread at Majolica is amazing, John please give us something equally amazing).  There is usually an amuse bouche served which are always thoughtfully prepared. This is definitely a gem in the suburbs and worth checking out.  And, it's byob! More...

This was our first visit to Amani's and I will definitely be back.  I went with my husband and my son.  The food would best be described as fresh, colorful and flavorful.  I loved the open kitchen concept, but would love to have elevated seats to be able to view the chef's plates. We arrived and had to drive around a bit to find a parking spot, we were given the option to sit outside or inside.  it is a nice patio, even if it is located in a small spot on the side street with strings of lights overhead, but for my first experience I wanted to dine indoors.  The decor is great, fresh roses on the tables, wonderful smells coming from the kitchen, including some rattling noises from glassware and plates, but that wasn't bothersome in the least.  The noise level got a bit loud the longer we were there, and the wine started flowing I guess.  The one wall of the dining room needs some minor updating, but otherwise, good.  It could be a really hip spot with a little "tweeking" from an interior designer. Now on to the food, I ordered a cauliflower and cucumber gazpacho , my husband ordered  a seafood chowder, and my son ordered the spinach salad with fried egg on top.  We enjoyed them all, very fresh and flavorful.  Our next course was the beet salad, roasted oysters. And baby back lamb ribs served with a chunky fresh apple "slaw", which was the special app of the night.  Again, all very good,  The main course came next and we had the chicken breast, crab cakes, and the fish special of the evening, halibut with vegetables.  My husband enjoyed his very moist and tender chicken, my crab cakes we're very lumpy with whole back fin crabmeat and a nice risotto on the side with squash.  Very good!  My son had the halibut and it was served with a nice vegetable medly with some wonderful fresh veggies, including whole mild chili peppers, etc. in a broth over rice. Even though the dessert menu was clearly staring at me on the table for the entire meal, we opted to skip the dessert and coffee, but it was so tempting.  Next time?......I would highly recommend Amani's BYOB for a fantastic dinner.  Kuddos to Chef Amani! Ambiance - 4 Stars: Outdoor and indoor seating is nice, the outside area is along one of the more busy roads in Downingtown, and there's not much "scenery". They have it set up nicely, however. Inside is classy, a bit tight. Comfy and warm feeling inside, seasonally they change the decor which is nice. Service - 4 Stars: Some of the servers do not seem super confident, spilling drinks or stumbling through the specials. Other than this, they are pretty good - making sure your water and wine is topped off, bringing items out and removing them on time. Food - 4 Stars: Pretty solid food. Certainly not the best food I've ever had, but the prices and selection are quite nice. Menu changes seasonally, so you probably won't eat the same thing twice. The meals are all very fresh, crisp vegetables. The chef certainly has a "flavor", and I do feel as if most of the dishes have a similar taste and feel to them. Not much variety in flavor profiles, which is the main reason I can only rate the food as a 4. Plating - 4.5 Stars: Very well presented plates. Usually includes a flower or fresh herbs/vegetables on top of the dish to make the plate a very nice presentation. Nothing super creative, so only 4.5 stars. Cost - 4 Stars: I do think it is a bit expensive. Meal for two usually reaches triple digits, even though it's BYO. The quality of food is mostly justified for the cost, however I do think reducing the prices of some of the appetizers & desserts could be justified. Overall Amani BYOB is a very good choice for a special occasion, or even a night where you're interested in spending a bit more money for good food. A solid 4 Stars. More...

Special birthday dinner at Amani's.  We decided on the outdoor seating which we loved.  I feel that the indoor seating is very loud, so the option to sit outside was welcome.   Our dinner was delicious.  We started with the crab stuffed peppers which was enough to split.  We each had a salad.  They were large, fresh and also delicious.  We both decided on the sea bass special.  I had really wanted the salmon, which they told me they were out of.  This was disappointing because I had looked at the menu online and was really  looking forward to the salmon.  The sea bass was good but was not real thrilled with the sides.  It came with a very unusual black rice and a green veggie that I really don't know what it was.  We were too full to order dessert but we were given complimentary limoncello.  Overall a great birthday dinner. We had my brothers rehearsal dinner here on Thursday and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. The atmosphere was warm and friendly. The restaurant itself is intimate and decorated nicely and the staff was very friendly and kind. The whole experience surpassed our expectations. The food was fantastic, every person who attended the dinner raved about their meals. Everything from the passed hor d'oveures down to the desserts was absolutely divine. I can't wait to go back! One of the best restaurants in Chester County, we are so lucky to have it in our backyard! More...

Absolutely Incredible! I've been meaning to try this place out for a while now, and with my Anniversary as an excuse I got my husband to take me. We've been meaning to try Amani's for quite some time after hearing friends continually rave about the food, but something always got in the way. So, I made a reservation for their Valentine's Day prix fixe dinner. Upon arrival, the hostess seemed a bit confused and was unable to find our reservation, but seated us anyway. Once seated, dinner was served, and both my wife and I thought the food was fantastic. All four courses that included: 1st course- Arugula Salad - Meyer Lemon Vinaigrette Crispy Prosciutto, Oven Dried Tomatoes, Burrata Crostini- Baby Spinach Salad - Butternut Dressing Crumbled Aged Cheddar, Cinnamon Toasted Pecans, Roasted Onions2nd course- Jumbo Lump Crab Cake - Scallop Mousse, Meyer Lemon Air, Chive Essence- Yellowfin Tuna Carpaccio - Wakame Slaw, Ponzu Emulsion, Wonton Crisp3rd course- Broiled Warm Water Lobster Tail - Truffle Butter Sautéed Butternut Squash, Cranberry, Spinach, Barley Risotto- New York Strip Steak - risotto (late addition so wasn't on menu) 4th course- Ricotta Cheesecake - Graham Cracker Crust, Blood Orange Puree, Fresh Whipped Cream- Gingersnap Salted Caramel Bread Pudding - Vanilla Bean Crème Anglaise, Fresh Whipped CreamThe meal also came with two complimentary glasses of champagne and limoncello. The food was heavenly and was more than we could eat.  After eating all we could handle, I had a cup of coffee and my wife had a cup of tea.  The only issue that I had was based on principle and is not meant to detract from the quality of the food presented. When the bill arrived, I expected the subtotal to be $160 (the prix fixe price was $80/person), but it was $170. When I inquired about the difference, our waiter, Rick, seemed a bit flippant as he turned over the ticket and pointed to the extra charges for our coffee and tea.  Firstly, I know we got a lot of food, and it was great, but figured coffee and tea would have been included as part of the prix fixe menu. Not too big a deal, but maybe they should have written that on the menu. But, what really bugged me is how he so assuredly flipped over the ticket to expose the additional charges, which were written as Coffee - $2.50 and Tea - $2.50, and then ran away before I could explain that $2.50 + $2.50 does not equal $10.We will definitely return to Amani's, but will be sure to seek out another member of the waitstaff. All positive comments. Soup - excellent flavor and texture. Salad - spinach was wonderful. Cheese tray very tasty. Service was excellent.Small location but cozy. Everything coming out of the kitchen, which us clearly visible, looked awesome. Main dishes were perfect - venison just fell off the bone, lobster ravioli wonderful, grouper was flaky and tasty, salmon was light and perfectly cooked, and vegetarian option was curried with just enough burn. We will be going back. Without question. More...

Last evening we and some friends visited this charming restaurant again to enjoy yet one more set of scrumptious dinners.  The chef here is exceptionally talented so the creations are...well...creative.  As a restaurant the food compares admirably with many of the finest restaurants I've ever eaten at (on this continent or the others I've visited).Service is adequate, not spectacular, but they don't rush you by trying to turn tables too quickly.  You are able to take your time, enjoy a fantastic meal and good conversation with your dining partners.I highly recommend this restaurant!! Great food, and pretty good service.  If I had to change anything it would be their hours (they close at 10p on Fridays and will kick you out at 10p if you are still there), and their location (move into Downtown WC).  I've had the beef short ribs which were amazing, and my wife had the Scottish salmon which was very good.  Overall great food, for a pretty good price for what you get.  No real complaints here! This gem in Downingtown, PA serves many great dishes with locally grown produce and meat. I've been there 3 times and none disappointed. The portion of each dishes was just right, and the dish I enjoyed the most was the honey pork belly sliders. It melts in your mouth without the greasy aftertaste. The service was very attentive and polite. By the way, don't forget their dessert menu and the complimentary shot of limoncello.  Highly recommended. More...

Great little neighborhood byob new American restaurant with plenty of parking nearby.  Everything we tried was deeeelish...three different oysters on the half shell, the crab spring rolls, and the duck breast, which was properly prepared.  Location is right on the main drag in Downingtown.  As solid a four star experience as you will ever get, be sure to stop by if you are in town. Since Amani's opened, is has been our go-to BYOB. We love this place because they have a pleasant, happy, courteous and professional staff, their menu is local and seasonal, and they are super accommodating to special diets. I'm tight with 5 star calls, but this place deserves it.  Had lunch with the family and absolutely loved the kobe burger.  Wife was equally impressed with the arugula salad and tilapia tacos.  No kid menu (didn't expect it) so we had them split some delicious quesadillas.  Calamari starter was spot on.Hopefully they'll plan a special prix fixe menu seating for Valentine's this year. We've been here for dinner and for brunch. Go for dinner. Skip brunch. I never had lunch there, but would like to.The dinners are always amazing, tasty and pleasant. We are never rushed and the waitstaff is incredibly attentive. There's always a great surprise, whether it be a new entree or a delightful dessert.Brunch is a total waste of money and time. It is obvious that the same chef/waitstaff does not carry over into the brunch staff. They didn't have coffee available (for brunch) and even though we were only one of two couples in the entire place, it took about 30 minutes for our food to actually be served to us from the time we ordered. I had an omelette and it was so overcooked that the eggs were actually brown. It took 10 minutes from the time we asked for our check to the time we received it.In short, go for dinner, skip brunch. My girlfriend and I have been going to Amani's once every few months for the past couple years now and it never ever disappoints. Amani's is a fantastic little BYOB in Downingtown Pennsylvania. We go here for special occasions and random meals as we have family in the area. The owners are super friendly and always recognize us when we come in. The food is incredible ... the menu changes each season but in probably 6-7 visits I have never had anything but well executed, super satisfying food. The prices are not cheap but being a BYOB makes up for that and for a special occasion this is our go to establishment. I have also had the pleasure of attending a rehearsal dinner here where our party took over the restaurant. The meal for 25+ people was perfect and the owners were happy to host the special occasion. Don't skip this restaurant if you are in the area. More...

10 February 2012

Had a very good meal at Amani.  In fact, it was headed for a five star grand slam in the appetizer phase, with a great cheese plate, a simple - but nice atmosphere, a cheery and helpful server, and a nicely varied menu. The deal breaker?  I had the scallops, and C had the prime rib.  Both were very good - neither was awe inspiring.  (And I know awe inspiring scallops when I taste them.)  Similarly, the chicken spring rolls were a near religious experience, and the chocolate creme brulee was...  good.  So in short, a very solid four stars for this charming little eatery.  It's about the same distance (though much more scenic) for us to drive there or downtown Philly, and I don't quite put Amani on par with our best meals in the city.  Then again, I didn't pay $30 for the privilege of parking my car.  A great addition to our BYOB list.  I suspect we'll be back. The short version? Amani's continues to prove itself as an "A" player in the chester County BYOB scence. The long version follows. We made reservations for the 8pm seating New Years Eve as a foursome. Amani's put together a very nice menu (prix-fix), a tad on the pricey side but given past experience we decided it would likely be worth it. While execution of the various dishes was not perfect across the board, but it was, overall, a superb effort.  We had decided in advance that we'd create our own "chef tasting" by ordering different items from each of the three courses and sharing them. First- the food:Paired with some truly great wines (a 05 Montrachet, 07 white graves, 01 barbaresco, and a 97 coach insignia cab) the meal was a real treat.  wonderfully fresh warm bread and olive oil to start - that usually speaks volumes about whats to come. A minor sour note (literally): the Cesar salad had too much vinegar - but i loved the "white" anchovies. The Lobster bisque was tasty, but chicken/chorizo soup was the best of the "soup/salad" course. Appetizers: the pairing of tuna tarter and yellow beets was enjoyable for some, not as much for others. Duck/brie spring roll outstanding;  mushroom risotto "balls" very tasty; escargot in pastry was classic. The main courses?  Generous and well prepared: fillet of beef with brussel sprouts and garlic mashed potatoes was spot on; pork chop with Roquefort demiglace rocked; crab "cannolis" were to die for; stuffed lobster tail (crab imperial) was a huge hit. The weak link in the dessert course was a coconut pie, the highlight a chocolate ganache; the cheesecake and bread pudding were both very good (but not great). The complimentary homemade limonchelo and champagne put a nice punctuation on the evening. Ambiance? Amani's has obviously amassed a large and loyal following. They were packed all evening, with the 10:30 seating line out the door. Not overly loud, but a good social vibe going on that provides a  bit of "downtown" feel here in the burbs. Service was excellent - just the right touch of hovering. We enjoyed the evening, the food , the wine and the company.  Based on the conversation around us, I'd say others felt the same. Amani's continues to be a shining star amongst the sea of BYOB's that litter our suburban landscape. If you're looking for a quality dining experience and appreciate the flexibility a BYOB lends, you'll want to keep them on that "A" list. More...

Simply put, this place is amazing.I drove past the restaurant one day and was intrigued by the sign.  I love seasonal food, and Amani's specializes in it!  We went on a Wednesday, and got impeccable service, and the amazing food was even delivered by the chef!Being a vegetarian, I sometimes have to settle for the same old pasta dish, but Amani's will tailor any dish to customers' dietary restrictions.  My favorite part was hearing where the local produce came from - our server explained which local farms produced the cheeses and veggies.Everything from the entree, right down to the olive oil we dipped our bread in, was fantastic.  Amani's is a little pricier than some of the usual places I choose for dining out, but it is worth every penny.  I look forward to more special occassions to celebrate at Amani's! As someone who has been to many Philadelphia BYOBs, Amani would stand toe to toe with the best of them.  The entire meal was fantastic from start to finish.  The wait staff was attentive without being obtrusive and the service was excellent.  The skirt steak with cilantro cumin sauce is a must have and everything tastes so fresh that I am sure it was picked the same day.My only hope is that the location doesn't hinder what is an amazing restaurant.  We were sad to see Jasper's go and that was right down the street and we suspect it was probably due to the location not getting a lot of foot traffic.  If Amani's was on gay or market street in West Chester I am sure they would be packed every night. Just an absolutely fabulous, non-pretentious BOYB in the Chester.  Great for a quick weekday meal or a any type of celebration.  The menu is not too long, which makes me always feel like the food is fresh since they're not trying to stock too many things.  Atmosphere is country-ish with an open kitchen so you can see your food being cooked!  Although it's a BOYB they offer 12-15 different drink-mixes, of which you of course have to bring your own liquor.  They switch them up, as well as the menu, seasonally.Food-wise the starters and salads are all great, with the highlight being any salad with beats! If you love beats you get a ton of it!  I'm always a fish-guy when we go here and the salmon is great.  Right now they also have a tilapia that has a bourbon drizzle over it that's outrageous.  Service is always great as well, they are very kid friendly, and it does get fairly loud when the place fills up, so don't be afraid to bring your little ones. All in all it's simply a refreshing BOYB, feels more like it belongs in West Chester, although we're very happy it's closer for us in Downingtown! Have to agree with most of the reviews, this is a very good BYO.Couple minor complaints. 1 the timing between courses was a little off. Took a while for the entree's to arrive after the app's. 2, ,my duck was luke warm when it arrived. They were packed, so not sure if the waitress was a little behind getting the orders to the table when they were hot or there was another issue.Outside of that everything was very good. Pork and garlic pot stickers were light and flavorful, and the Italian green salad had a nice dressing and was quite generous.Lobster Pot Pie had chunks of lobster and was very good. My duck was smoked on premisis and outside of the temperature it was very good.Split a dessert which was excellent. Profiteroles stuffed with pumpkin ice cream, warm caramel sauce on the side and fresh whipped cream on top. I normally don't eat dessert, but glad I ordered this, it was great.Cappucino's came out piping hot, in large cups with great foam. All in all, I would absolutely go back again. They take credit cards, and plenty of free parking on the street or behind the restaurant. I have to say that I just about cried when I found out Fioravanti's was closing.  I was very worried that Downingtown was losing a wonderful little BYOB.  HOWEVER, I believe Amani's has more than filled the shoes of Fiorvanti. The update on the decor is wonderful, much more inviting and warm feeling.  They have remained a BYOB and will even mix drinks with any liquor you bring in.  The staff is wonderful and after going several times I have never had what I would even consider mediocre service, it has been great every time.Their menu is fantastic and changes to incorporate seasonal foods.  I love the tasting menu but am a little sad that it isn't available on the weekend.  Also, make sure to note the hours of operation.  For some reason we always end up trying to go on Mondays but alas it isn't open.  Great little BYOB for Downingtown! Experience this wonderful restaurant right in the heart of Downingtown -  that has exquisite food and fabulous service.  The chef has figured out how to beautifully display food as well as combining wonderful and delicious flavors - adorned with a lovely edible flower.  Many items come from local farms, such as the beef is from Milky Way Farm in Chester Springs.  Highly recommend the Kobe beef, the Lobster Ravioli, the Fried Calamari, the Salmon and they generally have a good selection of raw oysters for all of you who love them!  Since it's a BYOB you won't mind splurging on one of the chefs fabulous desserts!  They offer a special if you go on a day that isn't busy they offer a fix priced dinner option, one item from each category for $45/person (some exclusions apply regarding entrees) check with the waiter if available.  Highly recommend!  Check out their webpage at amanisbyob.com.
