What makes a great website?
Google defines a great website as one that delivers informative answers to what people are searching for. It must also be mobile-friendly, aesthetically pleasing and deemed of quality by others. How? By having external websites linking to it.
A great website should have a strong lead generation funnel in place. It should look professional and be easy to navigate. A great website should load quickly, have proper organic search engine optimization and have a clear call-to-action on every page. What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
What are you selling? Who buys from you? Describe your best customer. Who is your competition? What is your unique selling position? (what makes you different from the competitors?). What are the goals? What is your timeline? What is your budget?
Describe your creative process.
It starts with a clear understanding of the customer's goals. This is accomplished by asking the right questions and listening, really listening to the customer. Only then can I form a game plan on how to proceed. Most customers feel confident in my design ability. In many cases, this trust eliminates extra work of producing multiple design options which in turn helps keep my prices down. For those who prefer receiving multiple design options I am happy to do so. Providing visual samples by the customer of what they like or have in mind before I begin the design process is another great way to clarify expectations and save on design time, which save them money.
What information do you need from a client before you can start work?
A clear understanding - from both sides - of what is expected. A signed agreement. A deposit (credit card required).
What do you love most about your job?
In the 31+ years I have been doing this I can honestly say it is the people I do the work for. I love the learning about their business and bringing new ideas to the table.
What inspired you to start your own business?
After graduating from the Art Institute in 1980 I got a job working for a large Graphic Design studio in Fort Lauderdale Florida. During my 5 years there I learned all phases of the business and was promoted from a board artist to production manager to account executive. During that time I hired many printers for the Studio's work and discovered a need. Quality design at a affordable price point for the customers of the printers I was working with. That is how I got my start. Working for a local printer as her in-house art department, but as my own business.
