Apart from the technical skill required, th photographer must be able to put the client at ease. A level of comfort and trust must be established , for the client to project his/her true personality in front of the lens and not hold anything back, or be tense. A photograph of someone whose real personality shows through his/her eyes and body language, a photograph that tells a story, I consider to be a great photo.
First, I make every effort to get to know my client , the nature of the project, the client's vision, what the photos will be used for and where , client's budget. ---so that we are on the "same page" Communication is ever so important.
