Why is it so important for businesses to hire a great accountant?

It is estimated that 40% of new business owners burn out and give up within the first 3 years of being in business. The number one stressor is listed as financial and cash-flow worries. Small business owners need to be a jack of all trades while always focusing on what they do best. As a result it is difficult to turn the degree of attention needed to your books. A great bookkeeper will give your business the seriousness it deserves, keep the books up-to-date and provide the necessary efficiencies, reports and information needed to manage the financial side of your business.

This significantly reduces the stress that all to often causes sleepless nights and ultimately burn out.

Why outsource your bookkeeping requirements to a bookkeeping service that is great at bookkeeping?
Working on your monthly accounts with an independent bookkeeper offers you a level of support that is not found with in-house bookkeeper.
Increased levels of confidentiality
Increased levels of objectivity
Removed from daily work dynamics
Flexibility of hours worked
You can control how much or little you do of the bookkeeping yourself to control costs.
Fixed monthly accounting cost
Virtual meetings
Perhaps the most important is that as a business owner you have someone to sound out ideas and discuss your business with who knows your business well yet retains an enhanced level of objectivity. We have your back.
Work with an accountant bookkeeper who is committed to you and your business success and able to see possibilities that may not normally be considered.
Bring a wealth of experience gained from working with a vast range of clients.

What do you love most about your job?

I have a real appreciation of the value that great bookkeeping brings to small businesses.

I love supporting small business owners with great bookkeeping. Being a small business owner is a tough job that is seldom appreciated by others. A small business owner needs to be constantly up-skilling as they do not have the budget to hire the professionals they need. At the same time they need to be working on their business and usually in their business doing what they are great at.
Small business owners deserve great support. Supporting business owners by taking care of their books and accounts in a way that supports their business, makes sense to them and provides the efficiencies and insights that are needed to make good business decisions is hugely satisfing to me.

I am interested how cloud accounting systems and the best apps for the client can support them in creating an more integrated and easy to use monthly accounting systems for their business.

What inspired you to start your own business?

I no longer want or are willing to work in the corporate world and creating my own bookkeeping business is the logical choice that incorporates my love for accounting, numbers, running my own business, and my admiration for small business owners and the challenges that they face. They deserve great bookkeeping support.

Along side my management accounting life, I have trained many years in the human potential fields, NLP - Coaching, and other more complex trainings and from this I came to have a greater understanding and respect for the challenges and rewards small business owners face. So in summary running my own bookkeeping business and supporting others is a very natural integration of my skills, abilities and interests

I have gain much experience from many years in management accounting for large and corporate businesses across a number of industries both in NZ and internationally. While living in London, I spent a number of years working in the Film and Television industry. I became a Film and Television Production Accountant with experience across a number of the large Television companies there. I specialized in working on television drama series, one well known series that gained international fame is the Jonathan Creek Series.

From my television experience I came to appreciate the power of working in a more dynamic way as an accountant, usually based on location. Accounting does not have to be just gathering historical information, but can be used more dynamically to forecast and project what is happening now and in the short term future. However, this takes a different type of mindset in my experience.

Why should our clients choose you?

Why should someone choose me? Because I bring years of experience to your business bookkeeping. I take your business seriously, as our client your business matters to us. We are easy to talk to and happy to explain everything in plain language. Willing to point out areas of concern if we notice anything, for you to consider if you want. But at the end of the day, you know that you are working with a bookkeeping service you can trust and that is so important.

The title 'Chartered Accountant' and the letters ACA or FCA, indicates that the person has undertaken a minimum of three years in-depth training, passed a series of examinations in financial management, auditing, business strategy and taxation as well as committing to continuing professional development.

As opposed to specialising in tax returns, a Chartered Accountant instead will focus on providing accurate records of all financial transactions for an individual or business. Consequently, this type of accountant is more likely to be found employed in a more commercial capacity.

Hiring the right Accountant for your business may take a bit of time. Who you choose to look after your accounts is vital, especially if you have plans to expand as you will need to look for someone who will get more involved in the financial side of things the bigger your company gets.

  • Research - Start with the company’s website and look at the accounting services they offer with an eye on what you might need in the future. If you choose an accountancy firm that doesn’t have the expertise to help you as your business expands, you will end up needing to finding another accountant.

  • Create a shortlist - Create a shortlist of three or four firms you
think are a good fit and arrange face-to-face meetings with all of
them. In addition to the fees, you need to find out about the
services they provide, as well as their customer services.

  • Fees - Some Accountants charge by the hour while others operate on a fixed-fee basis. You need to be clear before selecting an Accountant for your business on how their fees are calculated.

  • Qualifications - It is important to ask questions about the
qualifications and experience of the people who would be dealing with your accounts. You need to know that you could work with them, trust that they are on your side and are continually looking for ways of
adding financial value to your company.

  • Accounting software - You will want to check that any systems you use are familiar to the accounting firm. Your current method of financial reporting may not be the most effective one for your business and they may recommend systems that can do it better.

  • Financial jargon - If you are not an expert on finance, your Accountant needs to understand this and be able to communicate with you in a clear and concise manner.

You can be confident that any of the Accountants listed on Bark will be a safe pair of hands for your finances.

Before you choose an Accountant, you could ask to see examples of their work, read testimonials and ask to see references of past work they have done.

The AAT (Association of Accounting Technicians) qualification is the minimum level of qualification required for most kinds of accountancy. To become a chartered accountant, you need to obtain higher level qualifications such as the ACA, ACCA or CIMA, which will allow you to become a chartered accountant.

You could also look at their profile page on Bark and view reviews from past customers as well as examples of work that they have completed. This might also help you get some ideas for the types of services you need.

Accountants offer a range of different services. These include:

  • Accounting - All accountancy firms produce financial records, track your revenues and expenses and provide consulting on your business's overall financial health.

  • Auditing - Many businesses require a periodic audit of their finances which may be a requirement of your investors or written into the bylaws of your incorporation.

  • Tax Filing and Planning - Many accounting firms can ensure your financial reporting practices are compliant with current regulations, determine your company's tax liability and make sure you meet filing requirements and deadlines.
