Our renovation was essentially a gut job to convert the main floor of a little 1960 bungalow in E Van to an open floor plan for our family of four: new bathroom, kitchen (w/dramatic eclipse door opening to back), living room and fireplace including new floors throughout. Majority of basement also renovated to accommodate signature new staircase & new kids’ bedroom featuring new egress window.

We vetted four Design-Build companies before signing a contract with Kerr. We were impressed with Andrew's organization and informed feedback on our dreamy ideas.

The Design Phase was more involved than we had anticipated and was significantly over the quoted budget. However, Nisha’s creative eye and feel for the big picture in combining so many different selections would turn out to be invaluable.

The Construction Phase began in January ‘17. Demolition started right on schedule and Jim and trades people would be hard at work through June. Looking around the city at so many slow-moving/stalled construction projects today, the value in having a dedicated team from Kerr on site virtually every weekday for six straight months was huge. Good communication led by Dave throughout the Construction Phase was key.

Jim is a master craftsman whose calm demeanor really helped keep things on an even keel. As the reno took shape, his flexibility on the job played a significant role in the project’s success. His attention to the finest detail is evident everywhere we look. The care that went into the flawless installation of a stunning new wood ceiling on the main floor is something we will continue to appreciate for years to come.

In the final analysis, the reconciliation of our cash allowances did include a few surprises. Ideally we would have been alerted to these overages in real time. At the same time, we acknowledge and appreciate additional work outside of scope that was also provided by Kerr without costs. Kerr Construction has given us our dream kitchen and more. Our renovation included the removal of a wall between the kitchen and dining room, the installation of new cabinets, countertops, island, flooring, lighting, appliances, fireplace and the upgrading of electrical, plumbing and gas. Nisha MacNeil, our Design Manager, created us a completely new, beautiful and functional open concept main floor. Extra special thanks to Jim Marquette, our site supervisor. He organized the trades and inspections into an efficient schedule and paid attention to every detail. Jim provided professional and friendly service and always kept us updated with the progress. Kerr Construction did an outstanding job on our very extensive and complicated renovation project. We have a circa 1925 Heritage home which we loved but were running out of space with only two bedrooms on the main floor, a very small study and inadequate storage or closet space. With Kerr's help, we were able to expand the back of our home, to construct a new deck, expand a previously tiny study, and most impressively, add a second floor addition with a master bedroom, dream bathroom, walk in closet and amazing views! There was also reno work in our basement, which was dark, dingy and had leaky old windows. Kerr's team showed amazing patience and effort to create the design plans and repeatedly revise after dealing with City Hall's ever changing staff and requirements. It was wonderful that we were able to continue living in our home during the reno, which resulted in significant cost savings. The finished project shows great craftsmanship and good attention to detail. We are pleased with our new space, it exceeded our expectations. The project manager and project coordinator were very easy to work with and dealt promptly and attentively with any concerns. I am in the process of making inquiries to several firms about starting a renovation project in Canada. I wrote Kerr Construction, and Miriam replied that unfortunately the project would be out of their service area. But instead of just wishing me luck, Miriam then went on to suggest another company that is in my area and sending me their website to explore. Not only that when I replied to thank her, she went above and beyond to send me more suggestions!
If their customer service for just a "general inquiry" is this fast and considerate, I can only imagine how amazing it would be for someone who actually worked with them! More...

We started working with Kerr planning our 3 bathroom renovations, 7 months before construction. The design development flowed naturally with Kerr accepting our ideas for improvements as the process unfolded. Kerr staggered the construction so that we always had access to at least one bathroom while we lived through the construction. When issues arose, Kerr promptly advised us of the problem and provided us with options to address. When we identified a problem with the floor tile work in one bathroom, Kerr removed the problem tile and replaced it at their cost. The project schedule lasted about 3 1/2 months. While there were delays, Kerr did their best to adjust the schedule to maintain the overall schedule. Kerr's cost estimate was very close to the final cost. There were some areas where we were able to save to compensate for extra work that had not been planned but was identified once the walls were opened up. I have used Kerr on a number of projects and they have done a great job each time. Although this last project was very small, they managed to fit me in and treated it with proper project management, quality attention and follow through. Kerr helped with a total renovation of my bathroom. We have an old house and everything in the bathroom was falling apart and the existing layout was a disaster. I had never done a major renovation and didn’t know what to expect. I needed help with design, choosing fixtures, tiles, etc. and I wanted an end product that we would be happy with for years to come. Kerr was exceptional. They patiently worked on an amazing design. We knocked down a wall and moved every fixture. The new layout is functional and even though the space is small, it feels comfortable. I couldn’t be happier with the end product. All individuals involved in the project were professional, pleasant and competent. They really stand behind their work. Since completion I have had two very minor issues and I was blown away with the amazing customer service I received. Kerr designed and built a 2nd storey addition of a master bedroom with ensuite, relocated our laundry to the 2nd floor and also replaced our wood burning fireplace/mantle/surround with a gas fireplace.
During design, Derek was great and dealt with all drawings, liaised with engineering and surveying, plus dealt with permits and even a development variance that was required. We really valued that Kerr was the single point of contact for bringing all these issues together.
During design, Shawn and his crew were respectful of our family as we lived through the renos and additions.

During design, Derek was always going the extra mile for us, and dealt with drawings, engineering and permits. A single contact was important to us, and Derek came through.
During construction, Shawn and his crew was always keeping us updated on what was going on. With our 3 children running around and curious, Kerr was always friendly to them and respectful of our family atmosphere. Thanks to Derek and Shawn, we feel like we get to stay in a nice hotel every night, yet it still feels like home.

We totally renovated our 100 year old Kitsilano Craftsman home. We had to fire the first contractor as he was charging by the hour and would never had got the job done. The Kerr came to the rescue with the job not even half finished. We had a written contract, pay by the job, not the hour. They were on time and on budget. They were very respectful as we were living in the house during the renovations. We had weekly meetings to discuss the progress and any problems, or changes (which I wanted). You get what you pay for, my initial "bargain" contractor cost us a lot and the job was unacceptable. I am so happy with the results, Kerr won an award for the renovation and I could not be more pleased with the results. They gave me what I wanted when I was not even sure what I wanted. We hired Kerr for a design/build project: the renovation of an old bathroom. Nisha selected several design options for us that fit in well with the rest of our house. Grant personally managed the entire renovation from start to finish and made sure that things were done right. Of note, Grant encountered several surprises left over from a previous renovation in the early 80s, but solved each one. My wife and I recently hired Kerr Construction to complete a reno of our living and dining room on our family home in North Vancouver. We used Kerr from beginning to end, starting with their architects Derek and Nisha for design and using them for the construction and finishing as well. We initially chose Kerr because they seemed established and capable and we really liked our impression of Derek who took the time to listen to what we were looking for even when we didn't really know. We feel more knowledgeable and experienced with renovating now and love the finished product. Kerr construction was a pleasure to work with on our loft project. We partially enclosed our loft space which required a lot of detailed work; retiled the bathroom shower; renovated the spare room, refinished the concrete floors, sinks and countertop; and had the entire loft painted. They were on time, on budget, and always cleaned up daily so we could hardly tell they'd been there except for the daily progress. Our strata complex hired Kerr Construction to replace skylights in our complex in June of this year (2013)

Widely varying quotes from bidding contractors led the Strata Corporation to seek advice from the engineers who performed the Building Envelope Assessment some years ago. The information we received led to the selection of Kerr Construction / Absolute Roofing ( their sister company) because of their
combined experience which gave the Strata Corporation a greater level of of assurance that the work was in competent hands.

The project was carried out in a timely, professional and very courteous manner and based on that positive experience the Strata Corporation intend to re-hire Kerr Construction/Absolute Roofing to replace more skylights next year. More...

We were thrilled with Kerr Construction's work on our bathroom renovation and various tasks around our house. We needed a number of small things done (new garden door, fixing drafty doors, installing a handrail) plus a whole bathroom renovation. Kerr did worked on several projects in on house. They replaced all the interior doors in our house, put in new hardware frames, crown moldings in the living room and dining room, did work on the interior windows in multiple rooms, widened three closets and did all the painting in the house. Outstanding work; absolutely beautiful. Steve, who did the carpentry, is fantastic. The painting crew is top notch. Kerr Construction provided design and construction servies to rebuild our kitchen (including home extension, new roof-line, back porch/landing, and stairwell to basement), and did excellent quality work. The designers converged on our solution very quickly, and then were able to focus on details where there were many options.
The construction work followed the schedule very closely, and ultimately was completed within a day or two of the originally-scheduled date.
Kerr provided full-time construction supervision and crew throughout, and were very professional. All the subs were well managed, and the on-site foreman was extremely responsive to our questions and concerns.

I had some water ingress issues from the deck upstairs and had Kerr come out to investigate and quote. They did some testing and provided us with 2 approaches to resolve the issue. Kerr came in and did drywall and repairs to our ceiling, as well as having to install a new deck upstairs as the issue stemmed from incorrect installation and sloping. Because the ceiling was open in my unit, I took the opportunity to add pot lights and sound proofing while they were there. The staff were amazing, from the quote and investigation and ultimately to having Grant W. assigned onsite for the actual repairs. The team is very respectful, accommodating, neat and hard working - I had to sleep in my dining room for 3 weeks, but they made the process easy. We live in loft and they did a reno of it in preparation for baby arrival. They painted the whole place, redid she shower tile, renovated the office turning it into a baby room, enclosed the loft area and did a few other cosmetic things. They are on time, kept us up to date on expenses, even though we were a small custom job they treated it like one of the large projects they are used to. They’ve installed cement stairs over at one property. These were exterior stairs in poured concrete form. They are working on a curtain wall over at another property they removed the entire exterior of it, which spans the width of building and added waterproofing and reinstalled a curtain wall in each suite. I had mold in my bathroom, which I was quite concerned about. I called Kerr Construction to do an estimate on dealing with that and some other problems. They were very prompt about giving me an estimate. They were knowledgeable about the problems I was having and helped by giving different suggestions and options of how to handle it. Because they were so friendly and knowledgeable, I gave the job to them. The man who did the work showed up on time, was friendly, polite, professional and most important, very good at what he did. The job was completed on time, on budget and delivered everything they promised. Kerr Construction came out and fixed a water leak I had in the front of my house. By using special equipment they found out where the problem was without having to rip everything out. I was so happy with the work I had them do some minor renovation work after that.I would be happy to recommend them to anyone for large or small jobs. We called Kerr Construction after we fired our first contractor. The job was under construction when they were called. They not only listened to us, our wants, needs and budget, but made promises that exceeded our expectations. We did not have electricity or windows when they arrived, but they promised us that we would have heat, electricity and windows by Christmas so that we would live in comfort. They not only considered our needs, but they were on time, on budget and exceeded our expectations. Our home is now a beautiful Craftsman in Kitsilano that we are very proud of, and it is very comfortable and very much our style. Kerr won a Georgie award for the work they did on our renovation and we could not be happier. They had ideas that we loved and in the end we were almost pleased that the first contractor had to be fired so that we were lucky enough to get Kerr. They also came when it was almost impossible to get a contractor. The Olympic construction was on and everyone was busy, but Kerr never made us feel that anything was impossible. There were a few changes along the way as they had great ideas that we did not consider, but they made us feel we were their most important client. Our home is a 1912 Craftsman and we were not sure what we would find behind the walls, but Kerr is very professional with before, during and after construction advise. They even gave us ideas for the furniture and decorations upon completion. You must be able to trust you contractor, or you will have very big problems. How fortunate we were in this otherwise very unfortunate situation, to have Mr. Gockel’s expertise, knowledge, commitment and patience. Both he and his assistants were professional throughout the entire project, showed up early every morning and worked a full day every day. Our home both inside and out was treated like it was their home, extreme detail was carried out protecting the home from any undue dust and debris and each evening most everything was cleaned up in preparation for the next day. On the last day several hours were spent cleaning the entire work area. it was a very trying situation for us but all along the way Andreas explained what was required and why and how it would be done and even called in for a "second opinion" on one occasion.
