Thursday lunch and we three ladies were the only diners. Perhaps that's why the waitress, who was helpful, was so ever-present. My guests has banh mi, which were edible if uninspiring. I had the soft shell crab. I wondered how long it has been since the oil in the fryer had last been changed. The meat of the crab was mercifully untainted by the oil, but the special treat of crab was overpowered by the oil. I ended with banana fritter. I did not have to speculate on the age of the cooking oil on this occasion, as it was my old, oleageonous friend from the crab, determined to make its encore. I celebrated my 50th birthday at Gilberts, with Jane looking after everything, from the initial introduction, through to the big event. Everything that Jane said would be done or supplied, was done with a little bit extra. My braised beef cheek Massaman curry was delicious - the first mouthfull made a statement! My companions' crispy pork belly and the stir fried Hokkien noodles with chicken were equally as impressive. A glass or two of 42 Degrees South Pinot Grigio Coal River coupled well with the dishes. The cloudy weather and few clients were the only non-contributors to a delightful lunch. Highly recommended.
