3 months ago today, I was at Queenstown, in the middle of my Big South trip (17 Dec – 3 Jan). It’s taken me this long to write as I’ve got so much to say and don’t know where to start! I spent 3.5 months in beautiful New Zealand that ended with Stray, which turned out to be the most memorable 2.5 weeks that I’ll always cherish. Hassle-free (besides the app needing some upgrades and improvements), this is the best option as I traveled South Island on my own. 18 days is definitely not enough! I met so many people through Stray, so you’re never really alone. However, due to the hop-on-hop-off nature, the constant person is your bus driver, who’s also your host, tour guide, problem-solver, friend and chef! Moby, my first driver, helped me understand how things work with Stray and was caring in making sure I was ok when I was the only one on the cray-fishing trip. Also Kookie Stray, our very own chef who prepared dinner for us from A-Z and we just had to show up to eat. Love the cookie monster he had with him The biggest shout-out is to Mozzie Stray, who was fully suited up as Santa with the Mozzie X’mas bus that totally made my day! ❤️ Mozzie is friendly, patient, always calm, and helpful. I really enjoyed our conversations. I’m no fan of burgers, but his Mozzie Burger is really good! The patty is on par with what I had at Ferg Burger’s. One heart-warming glimpse of Stray’s culture I caught through the drivers’ interactions and the friendship they share, is family. And that says a lot about Stray. what four weeks here in New Zealand. it was one of my best times in my life. i got to know a beautiful country with incredibly lovely people and made friends. With Stray I could make all my dreams come true and thank everyone who has made this time unforgettable for me in the past few weeks. The drivers SOXX, Mozzie, Pacman did everything for us to make the trip one of the best ever ... I am 39 and met sooo many good people on this trip and was glad that some were over 30. I truly enjoyed my time with Stray’s amazing tour of New Zealand. This was my first time in New Zealand but we covered every inch of the South Island. I chose the Big South Freestyle pass. The guides for the tour provide a ton of facts/insights and it really felt like a big road trip with a bunch of friends. Abel Tasman National Park, Mount Cook, Queenstown and Wanaka were some of the best highlights for me from the South Island! I found the sailing adventure in Abel Tasman to be really good and the stray discounts that you get if you book via the Stray mate app everywhere even better. Stray is a great way to get an overview of New Zealand, as well as see some less popular spots. The people you meet along the way makes traveling solo far from lonely! (yet, for those introverts like me, you can also take time alone when you need it). Thunder was a fabulous driver and tour guide! With Stray you can take your time exploring New Zealand. Stray everywhere and further, also where the bus doesn't come. Ask the drivers and you will see that there is lots more possible then the regular itinerary. I did most Great Walks and scenic railways, could camp half of the time and visited lots of places outside the Stray network, all the time hopping on and off the Stray bus. I travelled with more then 12 Stray drivers, some a couple off times, and they where all helpful and kind. I traveled on the everywhere pass for the last 45 days and I enjoyed every minute. Even I’m not in the same age of the most people (I’m 56 years), it was always nice with the different groups. I met wonderful people from all over the world. Because I stayed longer at different places, I have had lots of drivers. They all did a great job! Specially I want to mention Rolex (by the way: he was always on time!) and lightening (he helped my to save money for my pizza). I had the most amazing time with Stray in New Zealand, travelling from Auckland to Christchurch. I was nervous having never done this sort of travel before but Stray made it SO easy I didn’t have to think of anything! Massive shout out to the lovely driver guides Skippy, Peaches and Thunder. Especially Skippy who went above and beyond when me and my friend wanted to go whale watching in Kaikoura, in no time he helped us hatch a plan to hop off and then make it back to meet the bus again in Picton - thanks Skips!! I just wanted to say thank you to Stray and especially Leftie and Mozzie for being such amazing drivers. Leftie made the majority of trip memorable and helped me to make friends and feel comfortable on such an alien journey! And Mozzie was really funny when I had him for last leg of my journey with Stray from queenstown to auckland. There are not enough praiseworthy adjectives to describe how much we enjoyed Stray in NZ - mostly thanks to our driver Thunder, who we had for about 90% of our trip! He was much more than a driver - ‘challenge’ enthusiast, dumpling connoisseur, comedian, vegan chef, agony aunt and more - and his thunderous laugh kept us smiling throughout! Definitely 5 stars and quite possibly the best tour guide I’ve ever had and hopefully we’ll cross paths again - along with many other friends we made along the way. We did the ‘North and South’ and ‘Bay and Back’ trips and managed to cram it all into about 26 days! Noteworthy mention to the Realm Virtual Reality experience in Wanaka - which was epic! More...

I'm halfway through my stray adventure but have stopped in queenstown for some months. I've been on Thunder's bus all the way from Auckland to Queenstown. I honestly believe that my travels would not have been anywhere near as fun as they have been if I had a different driver. Thunder wasnt a bus driver or a tour guide, he was one of the group. he goes above and beyond to make sure everyone is having the best time and I'm actually a bit gutted I wont have him when i carry on the rest of my stray tour. I had a great time exploring NZ and would throughly recommend using Stray. I had a tight time and the guys in the office was helpful and booked it all for me making sure I was in Wellington to watch the All Blacks. When I got on to cross to the South Island I was bit dubious when I discovered the driver was a Scot! Within a very short space of time my fears were put to rest as Shorty new her stuff better than the other drivers who were Kiwis and shared her knowledge with us all. I spent 6 amazing weeks travelling through New Zealand with Stray! If you're looking for a convenient way to explore NZ, if you want to meet likeminded travellers and if you want to explore not only the tourist hotspots but also some places that are really off the beaten track, I can only recommend Stray! Most drivers have a big knowledge about the country and provide you with interesting facts and sometimes entertainment to shorten the ride. You should be aware that you're probably not as flexible as expected since the buses don't depart every day (most of the time you can't just add one night to the minimum stay, check the timetables as published on the website). Keep an eye out for one of the regular special deals to save a couple of hundred $. Special thanks to Mozzie who was my main and also favourite driver! Had an amazing 20 days on the Stray Journeys bus. What a great way to see New Zealand in a short space of time. The activities and stops were fantastic, especially those 'further off the beaten track' experiences which made it extra special. Highlights include the Tongorio crossing - such an achievement to complete a 19K volcano hike in not quite perfect conditions. The Maori Village at Rotarua and Footprints forest walk in the North gave a unique introduction to Maori culture and New Zealands history and right through to current environmental issues. Also the Doubtful Sound overnight cruise was a once in a lifetime experience I'll never forget. Plus so much more! Big thanks to our drivers on the tour, who really made our trip one of a kind. We had a great three days with the super chilled Seagull in the North. Shorty, our new driver for the rest of the tour was incredible. Her energy, hilarious sense of humour and enthusiasm kept our spirits high the whole way through. You would never have guessed we were her first ever Stray Journeys bus. She put up with all our group's silly issues like it was no problem and went out of her way to make sure every single one of us had the best experience possible.
