Emily has been a game changer. I have a Dachshund x Jack Russell and having Emily offer us her guidance and training tips with realistic and fair expectations has been invaluable to not only our puppy's learning and quality of life, but also our confidence as dog owners.

24 February 2024

I first started seeing Emily on my vet’s recommendation. My puppy (who was about 6mo at the time) was showing signs of severe anxiety with people.
I engaged Emily in both one on one and class sessions and she blew me away with how amazing, knowledgeable, and effective she is.
Reggie quickly improved with her lessons and has now become a happy, healthy, much less stressed dog.

Emily will ensure you’re given all the tools to be a good dog owner, including reading materials, guides, and she’s even helped with sourcing toys and training items.

The most important thing, though, is that she is kind. She is a force free trainer with very strong values and morals. Your dog is in the safest of hands with her. There’s no pain, no punishment training, she doesn’t even raise her voice at dogs.

Lastly, she’s affordable. Dog training isn’t cheap, but her prices are reasonable.

Side note; she has a book, which I’ve read, and it’s invaluable. Absolutely recommend the book.

Don’t go to anyone else.

We attended Emily's puppy training class with our cavoodle puppy. The classes gave our family so many tips and tricks and our puppy received such good foundational training. Emily is an awesome teacher who can handle any type of dog. Our pup is now so well behaved and trained, thanks to Emily's puppy school. More...

Q&As

I love the smallest achievements in my job. The smallest ones are usually the most rewarding for me because of knowing how far the dog has come.

I love meeting new people every day and helping them with their challenges. It’s an amazing feeling to be welcomed into somebody’s home, and being trusted with their pet that they love so much.

I love working with different dogs and the complexities of behavioural issues.

I love problem-solving and creating behaviour modification and management plans for families to set them up for success as much as possible.

The biggest love I have is when I see all the hard work the family puts in - when it starts to come all together and work.

I’ve had many ups and downs being a behavioural consultant and trainer, but the people and the dogs I work with make my job amazing!

I was blessed to have been born into the industry. My mother is a clinical behaviourist and had grown up learning about behaviour and training.

I have worked with dogs and their families for 20 years and I have never had to resort to outdated methods that include intimidation, correction, or adverse training methods. My training programs are safe, practical, and effective.

Training dogs is a science that requires a deep understanding of how the canine mind works. Dogs are a part of our family, and yes, it is frustrating when they don’t respond when you ask them to do something, or overwhelming when they behave in a manner that you don’t like, it can even be embarrassing. However, training them to ‘obey your commands’ using harsh training methods is risky and counterproductive.

I believe in teaching my dog skills in a humane manner, ensuring that they understand and willingly comply to requests because they want to, not because they are scared of what will happen if they don’t.

Yes, I do both. If you are outside the Auckland area, please reach out through my website and I will set up a video consultation.

I follow the guidelines given when needed and respect each person's preference.

Services

If you are experiencing specific behavioural problems with your dog, then a behaviour consultation is recommended.

I specialise in all dog behaviour cases from general behaviour issues like barking, and leash reactivity, to anxiety-related behaviours, extreme trauma, fear reactivity, and aggression-based cases. I work with families and their dogs holistically to ensure they receive the best support and coaching to improve their companionship and emotional well-being.

The behaviour consultation will last a minimum of two hours and is held in your home environment. It is an extensive questionnaire to find out about the problems you are experiencing and involves a mixture of in-depth discussion, practical training, as well as developing the training and management plan.

After our consultation, you will receive a full written report which is for home and veterinarian use. The report includes the full behavioural assessment, prognosis, recommendations, and the behaviour modification plan, as well as a step-to-step training program to follow at home.

Email and phone support related to the presenting problem are also offered for a period of three months after the consultation.

Behaviour problems include:
Generalised anxiety
Barking
Fears & phobias
Separation anxiety
Isolation distress
Dog-to-human reactivity
Aggressive behaviours
Fear-based reactivity
Leash reactivity
Compulsive behaviours (tail chasing/ shadow chasing/ excessive licking etc.)
Inter-dog household aggression
Destructive behaviours (digging/ chewing)
Inappropriate soiling urination or defecation
Introduction of new family members such as a new-born baby

Ready to improve the life for you and your dog?
Feel confident that you and your pet will learn the skills you need to manage life events safely so that you can lead a more calm and comfortable life together.

Whether you have an eight-week-old puppy or an eight-year-old dog, a good training foundation is key to maintaining a healthy and happy relationship with your pet. Our training programs cater to dogs at all stages of life.

Private dog training sessions can be beneficial in supporting and promoting individual learning at a pace that is suitable for you and appropriate for the learning progression of your dog. These sessions can help you with:

Teaching you skills to give you the confidence in handling your dog or puppy.
General day-to-day manners.
Puppy development and education.
A holistic approach where nutrition, exercise and enrichment complement training.
Replacing undesirable behaviours with more appropriate responses.
Building a fearful dog’s confidence.
Individual puppy training sessions to get a great start in life.
Having fun and building a better relationship.

Puppy school is one of the most important things you can do with your puppy to help prepare them for the world. The purpose of puppy training classes is not just to help the puppy learn basic training skills and good manners at a young age, but to build their confidence, create positive associations, and give you both skills you will need for life. Together, you will experience a wonderful journey that strengthens your bond, strengthens your relationship, and builds your confidence in handling and managing your puppy.

Studies have shown that early appropriate exposure and positive socialisation experiences play a significant role in shaping a dog’s behaviour in adulthood. A lack of early and ongoing appropriate exposure and training can be detrimental to the dogs’ well-being and can lead to fear and anxiety towards new people, animals, and environments, and may contribute to dog reactivity later in life.

We gently expose your puppy to different situations while creating a positive association with those situations at the same time. We start with small exercises and build up to bigger tasks, this process sets you and your puppy up for success from the very beginning. We want to help our puppy parents gain knowledge and skills to prevent future behavioural problems.

We cover basic training skills, environmental management, puppy behaviour and development, work on confidence-building exercises, focus through distractions, socialisation, as well as how to manage problematic/ undesired behaviours in a kind and gentle manner.

Guardians will receive expert advice about:
Positive reinforcement principles for effective learning.
Navigating fear periods during your pup’s development.
Preparing your puppy for vet visits and grooming through comfortable handling.
Comprehensive coverage of puppy challenges: nipping, chewing, house training, addressed positively.
Techniques to ensure your puppy comes when called via engaging games.
Interpretation of canine body language and communication cues.
Environment management strategies to prevent unwanted behaviours at home.
Preventive measures for resource guarding, leash reactivity, separation distress, and more as your pup grows.

Our training philosophy revolves around playful games, forging a strong partnership through science-backed methods. Experience an inclusive, supportive environment in our small classes.

After each session, you’ll receive detailed homework, written instructions, training videos, and a course completion certificate. Our Puppy Class (Level 1) is an hour long.

Upon graduation, progress to our Life Skills (Level 2) Class. We also provide one-on-one in-home puppy training.
