What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
The secret to great photographs is in my ability to capture the feeling of a moment.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
Firstly, I like to chat with a prospective client to get to know them and their project. Usually in this process some creative sparks will flow back and forth and I will be able to assess whether we're a good match for each other. Then I like to gauge the scope of the project in terms of what the client would like to achieve out of the photography, what challenges we have to overcome and those specific details that are super important to get right. Then we discuss the budget and see if it matches the scope of the project. Sometimes we may have to consider how we can achieve a result within budget constraints, if they are a factor.
What do you love most about your job?
Working with people and companies, and helping them to capture something special. I love the challenges and the arc of transformation as we take creative ideas from a mood board/shotlist and turn them into images/film sequences.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I have a love of photography – both technically and in the arts. I also love working with people, sharing new experiences and delivering high-quality creative assets. Plus, now two days are ever the same and I wouldn't trade that for the world.
Why should our clients choose you?
I'm easy to get along with, enjoy the process of working on creative assignments and I can nail the brief every time ... okay, there was this one time, but, honestly, no cat should be made to wear pyjamas.
Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.
I can shoot products remotely in my studio if a client wants to courier them to me (I use PBT Couriers for all returns in New Zealand). Delivery, proofing and image selection can all be done online.
What changes have you made to keep your customers safe from Covid-19?
Masks for anyone with symptoms of a cold or flu and sign-in QR code on entry to studio. Mentioned in Health & Safety briefing ahead of every shoot.

Underwater
Derek is an expert in surface and underwater photography. He loves to shoot portraits, ad campaigns and sports in the water. He uses dive and surface housings to achieve superb results.
Drone & Aerial
Derek specialises in aerial photography and filming using a mixture of drones and helicopters.
Filming
As a solo operator, or as part of a larger film crew, Derek is an expert in capturing inspiring sequences and motion.
