Mel was amazing! My co-owner and I were at the point of renovating our 50's brick home where we needed to start making carpet, walls, and curtain colour choices pretty much in every room. She came to our home, gave us a few tips and tricks and was loaded with samples and colours ready for us to consider and use. We went with all her recommendations and we're LOVING the space. She balances budget, design and requests graciously. More...

We were absolutely thrilled with Mel’s interior design ideas. She completely transformed our large media room into a vibrant space that the whole family now enjoys. The concept she created was out-of-the-box, a vision we could not have come up with on our own. The combination of paint colours, furniture, wallpaper and timber features all came together beautifully, and it was within budget too! I will definitely use Uptown Jane Interiors for our next project. Highly recommend. More...
What’s your interior design process?
It depends on what services a client needs, but generally the process starts with me meeting the client at their home to get a deeper understanding of what it is they want to achieve. We'll develop a design style together and then work out a plan to bring the design to life. For the keen DIY client, I'm happy to share ideas and provide some coaching on how to undertake renovation work (I'm a keen DIYer myself), or for those that don't have time, I can coordinate a team of tradies to get the work done.
Which interior design styles can you cater for?
I like to craft a unique style for each client. Over the years this has included French Country, Art Deco, Industrial, Pop, Contemporary etc, and often it ends up being a mixture of several styles.
What do you love most about your job?
Encouraging my clients to be brave with colour and think outside of the box.
What inspired you to start your own business?
About ten years ago we bought a lifestyle block with a house that needed updating. This was the first house we'd bought that would be our 'forever home' and I wanted to do something a bit different to the trends-of-the-day. I didn't know where to start and I couldn't afford to make expensive mistakes, so I decided to enrol in an interior design course to better understand the principles of design - how colours work together, how to create spaces that flow, how to choose the right furniture and furnishings. The course opened my eyes to a whole new world of design that was fun and exciting, and so Uptown Jane Interiors was born.
Why should our clients choose you?
Clients should choose me if they are looking for something a bit different. My strength is colour and my goal is to create spaces that are truly unique to their personality and life experiences. A home that tells their story - a home to be proud of.
Can you provide your services online or remotely? If so, please add details.
I can offer a brainstorming design session remotely, where I make lots of suggestions and give ideas and inspiration. This requires a walk-through and so a good phone camera and internet connection is essential.
Colour consultation
There's a lot of decisions to make when renovating or undertaking a new build and the endless options can seem overwhelming. A full colour consultation enables us to work together through paint colours, carpet and hard flooring options to develop a colour scheme in which all of the elements work perfectly together.
Window dressings
Blinds or curtains, shutters or sheers? Privacy, sun-protection, or black-out? I can guide you through the right option for each room to make sure your window dressings look beautiful and are functional at the same time.
Furniture upgrade
Looking to update your furniture but not sure of the style or size you need? I have access to many wholesalers in NZ that offer quality pieces that are a bit more interesting than the usual retailers. I can help you find the perfect piece.
Brainstorming design session
Maybe you're keen on DIY, or maybe you want to make some changes but aren't too sure where to start? The brainstorming session is 1.5 hours in your home to walk through each space and give you lots of ideas and inspiration. This could be colours, layout, storage, what to add and what to take away, or room styling tips. This is a fast-paced, high-value session, where I'll answer as many interiors questions as possible. There will be so much information, I usually tell my clients to take notes along the way! A one-off design session costs just $260 (plus travel).
Kitchen & Bathroom Design
These areas of the home are important to get right. I can help with layout and colour scheme, plus put you in touch with experienced and trustworthy manufacturers and tradesmen.
