All of this allowed me to feel very at ease and she had a good amount of quality and on-point photos to choose from, without it being overwhelming. Vanessa is like the photographic equivalent of a horse whisperer. She could see I was completely out of my comfort zone having my photo taken and calmed me down with genuine care and humour. She made me laugh and gently gave me cues on how to make me look my best for each frame. I quickly relaxed and the shoot became fun. What’s the secret to taking a great photograph?
For me, it’s less about the perfect settings and more about connection. Whether I’m photographing people, spaces, or weddings, the magic happens when there’s a story behind the image - something real and honest. It’s about noticing the small moments, making people feel at ease, and seeing beauty in the everyday. The technical stuff matters, of course, but it’s heart and trust that make a photo truly great.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
I like to start by asking what the images are for - how they’ll be used and what they need to say. From there, I’ll ask things like:
– How do you want people to feel when they see these photos?
– Are there any specific shots or details that matter to you?
– What don’t you want the photos to feel like?
It’s less about a long checklist and more about understanding your story, your goals, and what matters to you. That’s what helps me create images that really connect.
What do you love most about your job?
Honestly, it’s the people. I love making someone feel at ease in front of the camera - especially when they tell me they usually hate having their photo taken, and then end up loving the result. There’s something really special about building that trust and connection. I also love the variety - one day I’m at a beachside backyard wedding, the next I’m photographing a beautifully styled home or working with a business team in a city office. Every shoot is different, and I never take for granted the places I get to see or the stories I get to capture.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I’ve never been great at taking orders, but I’ve always loved giving direction from behind the camera! Jokes aside, I’ve always had a creative streak and a deep love for storytelling. Starting my own business gave me the freedom to combine photography with working closely with people, creating space for them to feel seen and confident. It’s been the perfect mix of independence, creativity, and connection.
