Beware. I rented my home for just over one year while I went travelling, from June 2022 until the following September of 2023. The estate agent that I dealt with was initially very enthusiastic about working with me, and was able to arrange a tenant who, I was assured, would suit my needs perfectly. At the time, I was told that I could arrange as many property inspections as I wanted throughout the tenancy, although the agent said the more I arranged the more issues the tenants would likely report. However, as I was very bluntly told by the maintenance team at a later date, I was entitled to two property inspections per year, no more. Furthermore, the maintenance team often spoke to me with so little regard and with such a sense of callousness that I almost always felt miserable after getting off the phone to with them. About three months into the term of my lease, I was informed that the shower had leaked and that this had affected the kitchen ceiling. While this was beyond the control of the management company, I should add that they were very difficult to contact and that by the end of it, I had paid the bones of about three and a half grand in repairs for a job which, having now seen it, cost nowhere near that much. The workmen employed by Earnest also damaged both the toilet and bath, and stole a pair of decorative chrome pipes for the latter which were never returned (see photos). When I informed Earnest that I needed to return to my home by October of 2023, they were able to serve notice to the tenants and rehouse them prior to my return, something for which I was initially very grateful. The keys were left with my next door neighbour and the estate agent in question emailed me saying he would be happy to work with me again in the future. I should mention that, despite my promptings, a final inspection was never carried out and that I did not see the state of the place until I returned home at the end of September. To run through only some of the issues, the washing machine handle had been broken off, the door handle for the living room door had been removed and taken away, burn marks had been left on the window of the backroom, the mirror in the backroom had been broken and left in the corner of the room, and the mattress belonging to that same room had been clawed at, damaging the fabric. Numerous pieces of furniture belonging to the tenants had also been left around the house (see photos). I should also mention that all of the towels and bedding which had been accrued over the course of twenty plus years and which I had left for the tenants had been either stolen or thrown away. Eventually, the same estate agent who I had initially worked with called around with one of the tenants. While I was able to come to an arrangement with the tenant in question, the estate agent took absolutely no ownership or responsibility for the damage which had been done to my home, instead seeming to imply that the property had either been in disrepair before the tenants moved in, or else that I had not taken enough precautions in the first place. I have never been so disappointed in all my life. I very much doubt whether a final inspection was ever actually completed, and I should also add that a two months later it came to light that the tenants had left a combined gas and electricity bill of almost €4,000, something which Earnest should have checked before returning the deposit. I didn't write this review out of a sense of spite or malice, even thinking about it causes me to get upset with myself. However, I would equally hate to see someone else make the same mistake that I did. I'm not a property developer, I just wanted to rent my house out for a year while I saw a little bit of the world. Ultimately, I placed my faith in the wrong people. It was a difficult lesson to learn, but that's life. Earnest is everything that is wrong with the property market in Ireland, eager to get their hands on your property and collect the money each month, but very reluctant to do any of the work that that entails.
