Jeff came out today to have a look at my leaky skylight. No other roofing company even wanted to do that to see if it could be repaired. They just wanted to sell me a new one installed for thousands of dollars. Jeff easily saw what the problem was and gave a very reasonable quote to do the work. But then followed up with instruction on how we could do it ourselves to save money. Who does that!? Needless to say, we will be trying the repair ourselves to hold us to next year when we can afford replacement. 100% will be using Jeff for all my roofing needs going forward though.

Your roof takes a beating here in Halifax. Salt air eating away at metal components, wind screaming off the ocean year-round, heavy wet snow mixed with ice in winter. Roofs work hard.
Got a leak getting worse? Shingles flew off in the last storm? Water stains showing up on your ceiling? You need someone who actually knows what they're doing and shows up when they say they will. Not someone who disappears after the deposit or does garbage work you'll pay to fix again next year.
Post your roof repair job here and we'll connect you with local roofers in Halifax. You'll receive information from pros ready to help, so you can compare their approach and pick the right fit for your home.
What we see most around here:
Shingle damage from salt air and high winds off the water. High winds, temperature swings, UV exposure. It all adds up. Asphalt shingles typically last 15-25 years, but some roofs show wear earlier depending on the grade installed and how exposed your house is.
Metal flashing corrosion Because salt air rusts through regular steel flashing in just a few years.
Wind-driven rain Forcing water sideways under shingles during coastal storms.
Ice and snow buildup Creating weight load and dam problems at roof edges.
Flashing problems around chimneys, skylights, and vents. This is where most leaks start, not the shingles themselves. Good roofers check flashing first.
Ventilation issues causing premature aging. Your attic needs to breathe. Poor ventilation means trapped moisture, which means rotted decking, mold, and shingles that curl and crack way before they should.
Use stainless or coated flashing near the coast. Regular steel won't last. Budget for rust repairs every 10-15 years.
Here's how this actually works:
Tell us what's wrong - Be as specific as you can. We share your request with roofers in Halifax who have the right expertise for your job.
Review your matches - Interested pros will reach out. You'll see their profiles, past customer reviews, and estimated pricing all in one place.
Pick the right partner - Compare their experience and project plans, then hire whoever you feel most comfortable with.
Don't just go with the cheapest number. Ask:
Different areas have different problems.
Homes near the Atlantic take more wind and moisture damage.
North End has Victorian homes and student housing with deferred maintenance. Fairview is suburban with standard homes facing coastal wind and salt air.
Bottom line: your roof depends on your specific house. Good roofers look at your actual situation instead of pushing the same solution for everyone.
Permits and regulations - Nova Scotia municipalities typically require permits for full roof replacement. Halifax and Dartmouth have clear processes. Smaller towns vary. Confirm requirements for your area.
Insurance coverage - Maritime weather causes unique damage. Salt air corrosion isn't always covered. Storm damage usually is. Report damage quickly and document thoroughly for claims.
Building codes - Nova Scotia building codes address high wind and heavy moisture. Coastal properties have stricter requirements. Make sure contractors understand maritime climate demands.
Best timing - May through October is best. Coastal weather is unpredictable any time. Winter work is possible but storms cause delays.
Get your roof looked at if you're seeing:
Small problems turn into big ones fast. Repairs that cost $500 now might mean a full replacement you weren't planning for next year.
Finding a roofer shouldn't be this hard, but it is. You can ask neighbors, but their roof might be completely different from yours. You can search online, but how do you know who's legit?
Post here once, and let the professionals come to you. You’ll save time by connecting with pros who are currently available and interested in your project. You’ll see reviews from actual customers and can manage everything in one place.
Takes about two minutes to post a request. Review your options when you're ready and hire who makes the most sense for your home.
