Q&As

That after a few sessions together, I can see that mischievous smile that the student gets when they finally understand. I love fostering some room for kids' growth in confidence, to hear they've made friends, and that they are able to concentrate better in class.

I actually started with One World Cafe, my first business, in early 2005. I was recommending that my students go to a cafe regularly to eavesdrop on conversations and see what they could understand. Eventually I started my own, and it was an ESL school as well as a popular music venue and art gallery. It appeared in national magazines. It was my first love. Next was to be a classroom teacher, which I pursued as a mature adult and to great success.

I have a wide knowledge base that I have put into practical, individualized program plans. Part of my teaching style has been learned over the six full-time years of university it's taken to become a teacher. An even larger part is psychological; being able to hear what the student needs and offer solutions in a timely manner. Sometimes these solutions are both subtle and effective, like looking at increasing executive function capacity; the part of the brain that merges different information, resulting in understanding and being able to make quick decisions about content. This is not something just any tutor has in their toolbox. Most tutors, in fact, are limited to the subject matter alone and can't teach interpretation or problem solving.

Yes, I have a high-end laptop and an iPad Air. The picture quality and audio on the iPad is perfect for lessons over Zoom or Google Meet. I have my laptop open with resources right there on the screen, so I can reference subject matter that a student has emailed to me, without having to cut the online session.

I am only recently taking on in-person students, so the last few years I haven't needed to make Covid-related changes. The majority of my teaching has been online. Its something I'm still working on, but I'll get more comfortable being able to share screen content and feel a healthy connection with students. My in-home tutoring is just for two or three students and it is one person (at least) masked and strident hand-washing.

Services

Honing the craft of written and presented work can go a long way to improving grades in high school and beyond. It comprises about 80% of a student's graduating mark. This will be part of the focus of our private tutor sessions, as will coping with stressors and helping you get organized. I encourage you to start with the "Learning Advantage Workshop". It is two one-hour classes, about a week apart, to get things straight and build your confidence. It's $35.00 for both classes together.

The past couple of years have been really difficult for students and teachers alike. It can feel like everything is caving in. There are ways to manage feeling overwhelmed and gain a "learning advantage", maximizing how you spend your time and keeping school life and home life in perspective. I can show you. We'll improve your executive function capacity to help you focus and make decisions. Adults welcome.
