Garage Door Repairs

I am quite happy with the job BUT after completing the job they left a big container with cardboard and metal garbage and REMOVED something my husband hung from the rafters as a reminder for me when I drove in and it was not there I sat crying for over half an hour as he has passed away. This may seem silly to you but it was like part of me was taken away. After contacting them he said he would come but the damage was already done and I really didn't want to see him again. I am 87 and after paying him a lot of money I expected better. I am sorry but I would not recommend him to my friends. The reason I went with Legacy, I had Legacy to clean my windows and he did a wonderful job and I will use him again next year. More...

Q&As

Converting a garage into usable living space can be a great idea, but it's important to assess whether your garage is suitable for conversion. Here are some factors to consider:

1. **Space and Layout:** Evaluate the size and layout of your garage. It should provide enough space for the intended use without feeling cramped. Consider how the conversion will impact the overall flow of your home.

2. **Foundation and Structure:** Ensure that the garage's foundation and structure are in good condition. Any structural issues should be addressed before proceeding with the conversion.

3. **Permits and Regulations:** Check local building codes and regulations. Some areas have specific requirements for garage conversions, including permits and inspections. Ensure you comply with all legal aspects.

4. **Ventilation and Insulation:** Assess the existing ventilation and insulation in the garage. Proper insulation and ventilation are crucial for creating a comfortable living space.

5. **Windows and Natural Light:** Determine if there are opportunities to add windows for natural light. Adequate natural light can make the converted space more inviting and comfortable.

6. **Electrical and Plumbing Considerations:** Evaluate the existing electrical wiring and plumbing. If the garage lacks these features, consider the cost and feasibility of adding them.

7. **Parking Considerations:** If your garage is the primary parking space for your vehicles, consider where you will park once it's converted. Ensure you have an alternative parking solution.

8. **Resale Value:** Consider the impact of the conversion on the resale value of your home. Some buyers may prefer a functional garage, so weigh the benefits against potential resale challenges.

9. **Budget:** Have a clear budget in mind for the conversion. Costs can include insulation, flooring, windows, and any necessary structural modifications.

10. **Architectural and Aesthetic Integration:** Plan how the converted space will integrate with the existing architecture of your home. It should not look like an awkward addition but rather a seamless part of the house.

Before proceeding with a garage conversion, it's advisable to consult with professionals, such as architects or contractors, to get a better understanding of the specific requirements and potential challenges for your project.

The garage conversion process involves several stages, each requiring careful consideration and planning. Here's a general overview of the typical stages:

1. **Assessment and Planning:**
- Evaluate the existing garage space, considering its size, layout, and structural condition.
- Determine the purpose of the conversion (e.g., bedroom, home office, gym) and establish a budget.
- Check local zoning regulations and obtain any necessary permits.

2. **Structural Considerations:**
- Assess the garage's foundation, walls, and roof. Address any structural issues before proceeding.
- Consider if additional support or modifications are needed to accommodate the new use.

3. **Insulation and Ventilation:**
- Ensure proper insulation is installed to regulate temperature and energy efficiency.
- Address ventilation needs to maintain air quality and comfort.

4. **Electrical and Plumbing:**
- Plan and install electrical wiring to meet the requirements of the new space.
- If applicable, consider plumbing needs for amenities like a bathroom or kitchenette.

5. **Windows and Natural Light:**
- Evaluate opportunities for adding windows or skylights to bring in natural light.
- Ensure windows comply with local building codes and safety standards.

6. **Flooring and Finishes:**
- Choose suitable flooring based on the function of the converted space.
- Select finishes such as paint, trim, and other decorative elements.

7. **Access Points:**
- Plan for proper access points to the converted space, such as doors or staircases.
- Ensure compliance with safety regulations, especially if adding a new entrance.

8. **Permits and Inspections:**
- Obtain any required permits before starting the construction.
- Schedule inspections at key points in the process to ensure compliance with building codes.

9. **Construction:**
- Demolish and remove any unnecessary garage features.
- Build walls, install windows, and make structural modifications as needed.
- Install insulation, electrical wiring, and plumbing.
- Finish the space with flooring, paint, and other decorative elements.

10. **Final Inspections and Approval:**
- Schedule final inspections to ensure all work meets building codes.
- Obtain the necessary approvals from local authorities.

11. **Utilities and HVAC Systems:**
- Ensure that heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems are appropriately extended to the new space.

12. **Furniture and Decor:**
- Furnish and decorate the converted space according to its intended use.

Throughout each stage, it's essential to communicate with professionals, such as architects, contractors, and local authorities, to ensure a smooth and compliant conversion process. Keep in mind that the specific steps may vary based on local regulations and the unique characteristics of the garage and intended conversion.
