What do you love most about your job?
Meeting (and working with) different entrepreneurs, startups, and business owners with diverse backgrounds, unique stories, beautiful dreams, and a commitment to see it through.
What inspired you to start your own business?
Always be like a sponge ― absorb as much knowledge and skills as possible.
One of my first memories in Grade 1 was having my teacher tell my parents, “Thommie is just too quick to finish all the assignments, and then he keeps the other kids out of their work.” This wasn’t so much a complaint as an observation. I would say 20% a complaint and 80% asking, “So what are we going to do about it...?”
Then, I realised I wanted to ABSORB and LEARN as much as possible; otherwise, I become bored… And not the boredom of being a child sitting in the backseat on a long road trip asking, “Are we there yet…?”. No, that boredom yearns to know, explore, learn, and ask more questions. If my mom were here right now, she would recall the tens if not hundreds of (But Why?) questions I would ask daily.
So, to address my teacher’s challenge, I was enrolled in Advanced Maths Classes, signed up to Play Tennis, checked out 10+ books from the library during holidays, and numerous other “Sponge-Absorbing, Growth-Encouraging” activities.
Fast forward a few decades, and I found myself working full-time and studying for my degree part-time.
Why?
Just in case I got bored again. And I did! I wanted to travel. See the world. Face almost insurmountable challenges. Give back. Help others.
Then, one day, my former boss sat me down and told me, “You’re going to Botswana.”
And so, the travelling started. However, it was not until my late twenties that I started JTB Consulting.
And now, I am happy to report that, yes, I still get bored from time to time ?
So, the story's moral is that I will always have a “Be like a Sponge” attitude. And I am happy about that!
