Be specific about your requirements

Like construction, painting and decorating is a trade that can encompass many different aspects. Although it will generally always involve painting interior walls and ceilings, there’s more that a decorator could help you with. Whether that’s fixing cracks in the ceiling or painting an artistic mural on your office wall, it’s important that you find the perfect painter decorator for your specific needs.

Decorating jobs can vary from an afternoon painting an ensuite bathroom, to renovating an entire office block. From a couple of pots of emulsion paint to a lorry load of matt. It’s crucial that you discuss the specifics of your decorating project with any potential decorators to avoid any hiccups. This will help them understand the details of your request so they can prepare and budget appropriately. Being on the same page as your decorator from the very start will ensure a smooth job and a timely finish. It’s a win-win for everyone.

Minimise disruption

Whether you need one bedroom decorated, or you’re renovating your entire office, you’ll want to keep disruption to a minimum. Decorating can be messy and it often involves rooms being out of action for days, if not weeks. Ensuring that the work is carried out on time will require flexibility from both you and your decorators.

Before you give the go-ahead to any decorating work, talk to your decorators about how you can minimise disruption. For example, if your staff are unable to move out of the office, find a decorating company that is happy to work nights. If you work long hours during the day, perhaps give your decorators a spare key. If you, your family, or your colleagues have any mobility issues, work it out with your decorators so that there is as little disruption as possible.

The important point to remember is that you’ll need to find a painting and decorating company that works best for you. Hire a painter decorator that can work flexible hours if your circumstances require flexibility. If you need a decorator you can trust in your home alone, choose a decorator with great customer reviews and a proven track record of trustworthiness. If you’re on a tight budget, opt for a cheap decorator. Whatever specific decorating service you need, Bark will help you find the ideal decorator for the job.

What about the supplies?

The choices involved in decorating can be difficult to make, especially if it’s your home that you’re decorating. Many people spend weeks, if not months, settling on a particular style, colour or shade. This means that people often have their hearts set on a particular paint or style of wallpaper before they have hired a decorator to complete the job. That’s why it’s important that you decide whether to supply some of the decorating materials yourself, or let the decorators take care of everything. Before you buy anything though, it’s always a great idea to ask a potential decorator if they can buy your preferred materials cheaper than you can get them. This is often the case, as many professional decorators benefit from discounts at decorating wholesalers.

Before you agree to any quote, sit down with a decorator that suits your requirements and discuss your options regarding the purchase of supplies. Even if your heart isn’t set on any particular style or colour, it’s always better to shop around and discuss your options. It’s unlikely that you’ll have a preference for the type of paint brushes being used (better leave it to the professionals!) but you’ll probably want a specific paint. Achieving the perfect look and keeping costs to a minimum is surely the ultimate goal.

Hear from
a professional

How long have you been painting and decorating?

Mike Bravo Decorators has been in the decorating trade for nearly seven years now. It has grown into a family business, consisting of my son and eight other decorators. I have been painting and decorating for over 30 years, having started decorating from the age of 16 when I left school. Now, I’m putting all my years of decorating experience into my company and investing back into my growing workforce to keep delivering the best service possible. I can proudly say that we now have hundreds of satisfied customers across the UK who can attest to our decorating skills and professional finish.

Do you specialise in any particular area of decorating?

We specialise in all aspects of interior decorating, from wallpapering and plastering to graining and mural painting. No interior decorating job is too big or too small. We have experience touching up paintwork in government buildings in big cities, to full makeovers of tiny cottages in the countryside. The Mike Bravo team includes two qualified plasterers as well as a fully trained carpenter. These boys come in handy with larger renovations that require more than just a lick of paint on the walls. It’s better for the customer too, as they don’t have to spend the time and money looking for another tradesperson, as my team can do it all as part of the same job and budget.

What are the biggest challenges you face when decorating a home?

Each decorating job is different and they all come with their own challenges. However, there are some issues that can rear their head on a decorating job. The majority are minor and can be mitigated with proper planning but some are unavoidable. For example, accessibility to certain public buildings such as government property, schools and hospitals often requires a higher level of security. Fortunately, all of my staff are fully vetted and DBS checked. Weather is never really a challenge for us either because, as interior decorators, we are very rarely working outside exposed to the elements. As I’ve said before, if the job is properly budgeted, your objectives are clear, and you have a great team behind you, you should encounter very few challenges.
