What makes a great website?
A great website does more than just look good — it works hard for your brand. In my opinion, it needs to do three things really well:
1. Clarity: People need to know exactly who you are, what you offer, and why it matters — within seconds. No fluff, no confusion. Just clear messaging, smart structure, and intuitive navigation.
2. Consistency: Your site should reflect your brand visually and tonally — every colour, font, image, and word should feel like you. It’s about building trust and recognition through design that’s consistent across all platforms.
3. Conversion: Whether you want someone to enquire, buy, book, or get in touch — the site should be designed to guide them there naturally. That means great UX, strong calls to action, and a smooth experience across mobile and desktop.
Great websites blend strategy, design, and functionality. And when they get it right, they don’t just impress — they perform.
What questions might you ask a client when starting a new project?
Strategic Questions to Understand the Business
• Can you tell me the story behind your business? What inspired you to start it?
• What’s your vision for the business in the next 1–3 years?
• What are your biggest challenges right now — and your biggest opportunities?
• Who are your ideal customers or clients?
• What do you think makes your business different from your competitors?
Branding & Design Questions
• How would you describe your brand in three words?
• What do you want people to feel or say when they come across your brand?
• Have you worked with a designer or agency before? What worked and what didn’t?
• Do you have an existing brand identity or are we starting fresh?
• Are there any brands (inside or outside your industry) you admire — and why?
Project & Practicality Questions
• What’s driving this project now — is there a specific goal, deadline, or pressure point?
• Who will be involved in decision-making on your side?
• Do you have any existing assets (logo, photos, brand guidelines, website)?
• What does success look like to you at the end of this project?
Relationship-Building / Fit Questions
• What’s your ideal way of working with a creative partner?
• Are you looking for someone to follow a brief — or challenge and guide you?
• Why do you think now is the right time to invest in your brand?
What do you love most about your job?
What I love most is the moment it all clicks — when a brand finds its voice, looks the part, and starts to connect with people in a meaningful way. Seeing a client light up because they finally see their business the way they’ve always imagined it — that never gets old.
I also love the variety. No two businesses are the same, and every project brings a new challenge, a new story to tell, and a fresh chance to make something that really works — not just looks good.
But more than anything, I love working closely with people. I get to step into their world, understand what drives them, and help bring that to life visually. It’s creative, it’s strategic, and it’s personal — that’s the sweet spot for me.
What inspired you to start your own business?
I’ve always believed that great design has the power to shape how people see, trust, and connect with a business. I started my career working in fashion with my father, learning firsthand how to build something from the ground up. That experience lit a spark in me — a passion for visual storytelling, for making ideas feel real, and for helping brands stand out with purpose.
After working in sales, marketing, and design, I saw a gap: too many businesses were either priced out of quality design or stuck with cookie-cutter solutions that didn’t reflect who they really were. I started Gary Gartland Brand Design & Digital to offer something better — honest advice, clear thinking, and high-quality creative work without the agency ego.
The goal was simple: help good businesses become great brands. And that’s what still drives me today.
