A number of factors will determine if your garage is suitable for conversion but some of the main factors would b:
1) Is there rising damp or roof leaks?
2) Are there any noticeable structural cracks or gaps between the floor and walls?
3) If the conversion is to include any plumbing works, is the garage positioned to be able for the plumbing to be linked into the existing supplies?
4? Is the floor of the garage solid or cracking up or even heaving or sagging?

Initially a survey of the garage and proposed works is undertaken. This is to determine the suitability of the conversion and also to determine is council approval is required. Once these have been resolved site establishment happens, deposits are paid and the project commences. Typically the process is:
1) The necessary demolition work takes place
2) The necessary concrete work (foundations, beams, columns) is then completed
2) The bricklayers then move and complete the brickwork
3) 1st fix electrical and plumbing happens next. This is the conduits and piping chased into the walls/floors
4) Any other concrete work is completed (floors, slabs)
5) The plasterers then move onto site and complete the plasterwork ready to start accepting finishes
6) The base coat (and possibly 1st coat, depending on the type of conversion) painting is completed
7) 2nd fix electrical and plumbing is now done, this includes wiring (plug and switch installations) and sanitaryware installations
8) Finishes are now started, including the installation of the timber/aluminium windows, tiling, cabinetry, ceilings.
9) Final finishes can then be completed. These may include carpets/flooring, final coat paint, light fittings, ironmongery, taps etc
10) The client inspects the works and draws up a snag list (if there are any items requiring attention). These snags are completed and final inspection by the client and contractor is done and signed off.
11) Handover of the converted garage takes place.
