Booked my wife's 30th here. My rating is based on the food, service, and experience with the manager. The meal was excellent and the service was great. The waitress joked with people and joined the conversation given the opportunity, really made it a nice evening. The manager also helped me out tremendously and accommodated my party for my wife beyond my imagination. He really went above and beyond for this special occasion and it was very appreciated. 2nd time at Fauna and it was as good as I remembered. All the dishes were fantastic and tasty cocktails. The soft shell crab is by far my favourite. The chili jam that comes with it is so good. I asked if I could buy it! Service is good and the kitchen got food out at a good pace. Definitely one of the better restaurants in Ottawa and a place to go for special occasions. More...

Went there for dinner with my mom on a Monday. Wasn't very busy, food took a bit of time but service was great. Prices were definitely above average at approximately $35 per main and $20 for appetizers.Food was delicious, portions were decent, although my pork came out a bit more rare than for my liking.Would recommend to try out but wouldn't be my go to joint when in town. A modern urban eatery on Bank. Food is elevated and reimagined. I had the Halibut which was prepared and presented very nicely. My starter was the lobster bisque and although I wanted to love it... I wanted to compare it to the lobster bisque I had in Key West ( my standard) but sadly it came far short of that. A closer comparison would be to that of a butternut squash soup with a fried seafood/lobster ball. Proof that sometimes reimagining things can go too far. Tasty soup... But not Lobster bisque. Still, a nice spot for dinner. It's not cheap so unless you have high end tastes and live that extravagant lifestyle it's not an everyday spot. But it is a place on the Ottawa map you should try. I went to dinner with my brother an partner. The food and wine options were good and we had a nice meal.The reason for four stars is that there was a large party in the restaurant that night and the service was a bit inattentive - honestly we did not feel that welcome. Based on our experience, it seems that the restaurant was not staffed appropriately.I will give this place a second chance as the food was quite good and we may have just had an unusual experience. Fauna made a list of the top restaurants in Canada so we wanted to check it out on our anniversary.First of all, you should definitely have a cocktail since they take a lot of pride in mixing up some pretty nice libations. Mine called for citrus, ginger  and pepper flavours that could throw it out of balance, but it was superb!For food we tried all of the available appetizers but one, the lobster bisque. Fauna is my FAVOURITE restaurant in Ottawa!  The best dish is the 80 Day Dry Aged Rib Eye... it is the BEST steak I've ever had.  INCREDIBLE (it is a splurge, but WORTH IT). 80 Day Dry Aged Rib Eye:   Tender meat, amazing flavour, perfect amount of juiciness and fattiness... Now I know what all the hype is about. It came with kimchee green beans and Korean potatoes, which complemented the meat well. SOFT SHELL CRAB: Super yummy! Crispy (because it was deep fried ) and lots of juicy crab meat! GUINEA FOWL: with parisienne gnocchi and asparagus. This dish was AMAZING. The whole time I was eating, I couldn't stop saying "WHAT A DELICIOUS BIRD" (yes, it's a bird. I thought it tasted similar to duck, but white meat; super tasty and tender)! Truthfully, the gnocchi wasn't my favorite (I'm SUPER picky about my gnocchi), but the deliciousness of the rest of the dish made up for it! Super memorable and I would 100% order this again.New Zealand LEMON SOLE: on sticky rice. Super yummy! The fish was tender but had a crispy exterior. ASPARAGUS: with brown butter béarnaise, Serrano ham floss and a poached egg - AMAZING! My boyfriend didn't want to order it because he didn't think asparagus could be special... He was so wrong! This asparagus dish was extremely flavourful and super memorable New Zealand COCKLES (similar to mussels): in a saffron wine sauce, served with toast. We really enjoyed these - very flavourful and the sauce was yummy to eat with the toast (which was also delicious).OCTOPUS ESCABECHE:  We love octopus because of its unique chewy texture. This was one of my boyfriend's favourite dishes. It wasn't my favourite, but it was definitely yummy! I think I prefer octopus when it's been grilled and has a bit of a smoky flavour. This octopus has a more acidic/citrus flavour.I highly recommend this restaurant. I absolutely love fauna. This place is home to the best burger in Ottawa. 80 day dry aged Angus burger is out of this world. The bun it comes on is a fantastic brioche but I've recently stopped eating bread. Hence the lack of a bun. The fries are equally good. Triple fried and extra crispy. Salad is fresh with a light vinegarette. Service is always above and beyond. The people that work here are down to earth, knowledgeable, and friendly. Definitely my go to lunch spot in Ottawa.I've also had several other items on the menu. All equally good. But the burger is soooo good. Why mess with a good thing? I saw this place made 100th in Canada's Top 100, so I went to try. I think your expectations get a bit skewed when a restaurant is on one of those lists - it was good, but not amazing. I found the prices on the high side, because you can have this kind of food/ingredients/cooking/ambiance in most major cities, and for less. The decor is weird - somehow it already feels dated. I live in the neighbourhood and have walked past this restaurant countless times. This week we decided to go in. Wow! Fauna is legit. The atmosphere is open and vibrant. Fauna presents an exposed ceiling and brick walls combined with hanging lights and a casual warm glow. The menu isn’t extensive, but it is well-thought out and every dish looked tempting. Fauna has nature and game-based fare, giving credence to its name. I order the rabbit and my gf tried the duck breast, (which I sampled from her plate). They were grilled, seasoned and plated superbly. Both dishes were home runs. It’s pricey, but completely within reason for Fauna’s substance and style. Simply delightful. This is where you come for a leisurely business lunch, although they're also great for dinner and fun for large groups.I revisited Fauna this past week for a fundraiser and had a wonderful experience. They were warm and accommodating with guests, and the food was delicious. I had the hanky pansy cocktail to start and it was deliciously citrusy. For my appetizer I had the Rangoon crab. It was two small portions of crab deep fried in pastry. Compared to the other appetizers, it was a bit lacklustre in its presentation but tasted good. My entrée was the rabbit leg with couscous. This was tender, juicy and the couscous added a really nice texture and flavour. We all ordered dessert. The gluten free option was the best tasting: chocolate with a passion fruit mousse. I had the white chocolate and coffee dessert which I found a bit bland. The service was amazing and I can't wait to go back. More...

Wow! What a treat Fauna is. We came here recommended by a chef in the family. The decor is an eclectic blend of old and new with a hip vibe. The service was quick (we walked in without a reservation), accommodating (bar stools are tricky for me so they whipped up a table promptly without interrupting other diners) and knowledgeable as we were talked through the menus. The drinks list seemed to be curated with care. I haven't even mentioned the food! Unusual food combinations work well together and the whole meal was delicious. Really enjoyed my experience here. Made a reservation on Open Table, which was quick and easy. Service was great, and I really liked the "Bartender Choice" concept on their drink menu; tell the server your craving and the type of liquor you would like to drink and the bartender would whip up something based in your request. I requested something "fresh and fruity" with a clear alcohol and I was not disappointed. Ordered the ribeye for two, and asked for a wine to pair. Our server made a great recommendation that really complimented our meal. Overall, an amazing experience and will definitely visit again the next time I'm in Ottawa. More...

Absolutely superb restaurant, fauna has a pleasant atmosphere and a smaller, but superb menu offering a great selection. I enjoyed all the food - the salmon was incredible, and the duck with Kimchi was also very very good. I personally prefer the lighter dishes but decided to try the duck this time, whereas my girlfriend ordered the rabbit. Both were very good, and even though I ordered a dish that I usually don't enjoy (the duck - sometimes it is too rich for me) it was still great. I would recommend this place to anyone looking for an excellent dining experience in a more casual and popular and friendly atmosphere. Their selection is excellent, as is the food and the prices. I few weeks ago, during March break, two (2) of my humble brothers and myself had the pleasure to dine at Fauna. After a few well-prepared and beautifully balanced drinks (Manhattan, Negroni bianco and a New York sour), we all ordered the Chef’s 5 course blind tasting menu with the optional wine pairings. We were not disappointed! Every dish was well balanced. Tasty, appetizing, spicy at times, the Chef presented a variety of dishes which included fish, homemade cheek beef pasta, arancini and a light desert. We appreciated the quality and freshness of the products. To the exception of one specific wine from Slovenia, we were happy with the wine selection. The only element missing was the patrons. If located in Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver, Fauna would be buzzing with customers all week long. Where is the fauna? Frankly, its a bit frustrating and puzzling. Is it the location or did we happen to fall on one particularly slow week where customers were busy skiing the slopes or bathing in the sun? Keep up the good work and dedication! Very good friends invited us out for dinner. It was the fist time we were there since it was changed over from a shoe repair shop to a restaurant. Who ever did the make over needs to be congratulated on the redesign. Lots of windows and a ambience that makes for a wonderful night out. The only negative would be is a very high ambient noise level that makes conversation nearly impossible when it fills up. For dinner two of us had the surprise five course tasting meal which used very fresh ingredients, presented and plated with care. All five courses were delicious and appreciated. The other two shared the dry aged steak which was just as delicious. For a Friday night it was a full house so reservations are a must. Only thing we noted was front staff seemed to be overwhelmed which was a possible book off by another staff member. Wine suggestions for the meal were well thought and complimented the meal as well. Review only for 14th Feb. V day special meun. To be a great restaurant. The fresh food and delicious is basic requirement. Fauna not only met these but also has some amazing idea of cooking and combination. From start to the end of the four courses, every dishes are at least good. Not like some restaurants, some dishes are always not that wonderful. 85dollars plus tax is afforable and worth it. You also are allowed to bring your own alcohol with 25 dollars per bottle charge (Its ok because the price of wine which is sold in any restaurant is double at least compared to LCBO). This is definitely a little jewel that I was not expecting, particularly the wine list. Even by the glass, you won't find the same boring bottles served up everywhere else. If you're a wine lover and somewhat of a foodie, you have to check this place out.Went here for lunch and it was surprisingly empty. The ratings say it's expensive but it isn't, maybe that has something to do with the lack of lunchtime goers but honestly it's the same price range as other restaurants but the items are unique. Last night was the best experience in Fauna. So good!!-Visited again tonight. My satisfaction was much higher this time. The service was improved and food was tasty. Food was very very good. The deer tartare was served topped with salsify (instead of crostinis) and it was delicious. The dumplings dish had a wonderful calamansi broth. The duck was a very filling and rich dish, and the country ham dish was light, but not as small as some suggest. It's definitely quality over quantity here. The drinks were superb. Hey Google can I give this place 6 stars? A solo meal out at this bright and bubbly restaurant. Staff are lovely. Food is amazing and quite possibly the best I have had all year. The main was Bison with a rich jus and just right crisp vegetables all very flavoursome. The desert was chocolate and passion fruit. Layers of mousse with a chocolate soil (actually quite large so maybe chocolate gravel) inspired charcoal marshmallows and a passion fruit coulis that bursts with zingy flavour. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a fabulous dining experience. We had booked a reservation and our table was delayed, no problem as we took a seat at the bar and had wonderful drinks. When I went to pay the bar tab I was informed that the drinks were on the house. I asked why and the bar manager said it was due to the delay in having our table ready on time. I thought this was such an amazing touch that the restaurant would go out of their way to take care of this for us. The whole team at Fauna is amazing, I have severe Tree Nut and Peanut allergies, the restaurant is able to accommodate ALL allergies and the service team is beyond knowledgable about providing recommendations. Our server was so wonderful, we ordered an app that had an odd number of available items and he was able to have the chef's prepare it with an even amount for everyone at our table to enjoy. Fauna constantly exceeds my expectations, thank you so much to everyone who works there in making this such an incredible place to eat. Had a few gripes, but to give Fauna anything but 5-stars would be a disservice: it really is one of the highest quality restaurants in Ottawa. Excellent for taking some business clients out, or a party of 6-12. And still very good for a date or small partyWe ordered: venison tartare, country ham, oysters & soft-shelled crab. Cocktails. All was phenomenal and prompt.The food was local, well-explained by the staff, and brought out in courses that complimented the dishes. Everything on the menu looked amazing, and the cocktails were exceptional (try the kimchi caesar).Gripes: This place is not a peaceful date restaurant like Town, or more subtle venues. There are a handful of huge tables and a bar that dominate the main floor, and if you have even 3/4 of those seats occupied, it'll be loud.If you come for a date/duo meal, you'll likely get seated by a corner near the window. The view of the street was nice, but -20ºC is still rough on the other side of a half-inch of glass. We ended up shivering through our country hamIf some rambunctious client dinners, or a laughing bridal shower party from Gatineau will destroy your anniversary ambiance, then you're rolling the dice by coming here.But if you're game for some party-vibes in the air while you eat, then you're golden... but maybe bring a sweater if there's snow outside. But it's not just the food and the decor, their relationships with vineyards, farms and collaborations with local restaurants make Fauna a heart and soul place not just a pretty plate. Dined here for my sister's birthday last Friday. The ambiance and decor was really nice. Really appreciate the vegetarian options for an upper class restaurant. Came here with my partner for dinner on a Saturday night while were in town. I heard it was one of the top restaurants in Canada and wanted to give it a try. It has an casual, but upscale, bar/restaurant vibe. We were seated quickly and the servers were efficient.   I ordered the Duck Breast and enjoyed it. The breast was juicy and had a nice crispy top. It was flavourful and paired well with the small side items (kimchi, corn, shiitake mushroom, and small scallion biscuits). In terms of things that could have been improved...I thought the price was a bit high for the quantity of food, even though the quality was great! If you are planning on dining with them, I would make a reservation first, we were able to walk in but only because we were only 2 and early in the evening. We had a business meeting followed by lunch. The room in the basement has a nice feel, with a long table for about 16. The presentation on the large TV was visible. There was a bit of noise from people walking overhead and down stairs, and the doors were a bit noisy. Coffee was brought out by a very nervous server and you could hear the dishes shaking as he carried them - kind of funny! I like my coffee strong but it was absolutely not to my taste, very acidic and I didn't finish the cup. Having tried this restaurant maybe a couple of years ago, I always thought back to the yummy food and absolutely amazing cocktails, so I decided to make a visit on a weekday evening. What I tried:-          To drink: strawberry fields - I usually really like their cocktails because they are strong! This one was delicious, but had quite a lot of egg white foam. I would probably try a stronger-tasting one next time! -          Swordfish crudo: I thought the portion was small at 4 pieces of crudo, but the fish was very fresh. However, it was a little difficult to chew, compared to say, scallop crudo. Accompagniments were very citrusy but did not seem to add to the dish much, I preferred just having the crudo on its own! -          Beef tongue pastrami: WOW. I wish I could have ordered 2 or 3 of these (to replace the other dishes I got)! I really love tongue due to the texture, and this one was perfectly tender, and sliced thinly. The accompagniments were delicious, and having the sauce au jus made it comfortingly meaty. The mustard seeds and corn mixture also went very well with each bite of tongue. :P -          Eggplant pakoras: I don't really know why I was thinking of ordering an Indian dish at a Canadian restaurant; I wish I had chosen another dish! It was the most salty dish of the night, but the curry undertones were not too strong. If you don't like spicy, don't get this! -          Smoked bison bavette: This was probably the second best dish, but it was much less tender than the pastrami. Next time, I will probably choose a different meat, such as duck, or the fish they had. I really like the interiors! Although it can be loud, it's not too loud, but your conversation won't be heard by other tables. I have sat at the bar previously, which is also a fun experience because the bartender is entertaining to watch when making drinks! More...

I can't say enough good things about Fauna. I've eaten here around 2-3 times a month since opening (easily 40+ visits). I have never eaten anything I haven't loved, and I've tried as much of their inventive menu as I could. Frog legs? Yes please. Duck heart tartare on V-day? You guys are dark, funny, and I couldn't eat raw heart on a better day. Every crudo, carpaccio, and tartare I've tried are all the things delicious. Each plate is a work of art. They are all super attentive, friendly, and incredibly knowledgeable about all things delicious. I've built a rapport with most of the Fauna's team, and can't say enough good things about them. The main room itself is cozy, open, and industrial. Yes. Those adjectives do not normally go together. But they do at Fauna. Even the bathrooms are gorgeous. The Foundry room downstairs has been a real treat to use, which I have on a few occasions. Service with a private booking was fantastic. Double plus good for the ability to play your own music.In my opinion, one cannot go far wrong eating at Fauna. Caveat: those who can go wrong have an unrefined palate, prefer quantity over quality, or go to restaurants to simply play the part of a scenester.There are many self-proclaimed "foodies" - I despise that word. I know food because I took the time to educate myself about as many aspects of cuisine as possible. Just because you spend lots of money eating out doesn't make you any more special or unique, or valued to society. You are not a special snowflake.Fauna deserves 5 stars for everything they've done. Today, everyone feels they have a right to an opinion, and they do. However, not all opinions hold equivalent value.If you know high quality when you taste it, you'll love this place. Very yummy indeed. I had the tuna appetizer and it was to die for. Perfectly seared an yummy crunchy Japanese seasonings complex enough that it's something I cannot make at home. I came here with a friend for dinner two weeks ago and had the steelhead trout brandade. My friend got the halibut, and for dessert we had chocolate + ginger. My dish could have come with more bread to mop up the sauce with, but it was delicious nonetheless. The dessert was melt-in-your-mouth delicious and the ginger worked well. The presentation for all three dishes was very good. In general, the waitress knew the dishes pretty well, but something about her was kind of off-putting. I'm not sure if she was just super quiet or just trying to not disturb us, but every time she came to check up on us or take away our plates, she just came up to us without saying a word so it was pretty awkward. That aside, the cocktail that the waitress recommended was superb (blue sea)!! It was very unique -- spicy, tangy, sweet, and fresh-tasting (cucumbers) all in one! This was possibly the best cocktail I've ever had. It lasted me my whole meal (usually I drink my cocktails pretty fast but this one I was satisfied with taking slow sips). The ambience was pretty intimate - ideal for a date or business meeting, but would also work for a nice dinner with friends or family. Called to ask if a table was available at the last minute on a Saturday evening (yes, mea culpa).  They said no table, but would hold a spot at the bar for me and my friend, if we could get there soon.  We really appreciated being accommodated...it's great when a place actually wants your business.Sat at the bar.  Ordered a great Beaujolais, upon bartender's reco.  I don't usually like Beaujolais.  The venison tartare was awesome.  Brussel sprouts were crispy and savoury.  Pig cheeks were a nice indulgence.  The deep fried octopus was crispy but not heavy, and the sauce was delicious.  We even got a free glass of beer because someone forgot to mark that they already picked it up!  Had a great meal.  Would definitely go back!Thanks! Fauna.  As opposed to Flora.  Yes, we're talking about animals.  And we had them all - fish, fowl, wild game, farm animal.  Fauna has a blind five course tasting menu for $75 per person.  The offer wine pairings at $40 or $60.  Not more booze, just better quality.  The blind menu is not an effort by the kitchen staff to get rid of leftovers or slow moving items.  Rather it is an experiment with new dishes to see what might make it to the next month's menu.We started with champagne and a Mexican inspired ceviche.  It was OK, but not great.  The next course was venison tartare.  Again OK but not great.  But the third course was a roast boar belly with roasted vegetables that was simply divine - my favourite dish of the evening.  It was perfectly paired with a white wine, whose name I can't recall.  Next came duck breast on spätzle and mushrooms with a mushroom mousse.  It too was very good and perfectly paired with a Nero d'Avola.  The last course was dessert - cake and ice cream served with a muscadet - also good, but not really special.The service was great.  The room is a bit noisy once all the table are full.  So, what do I really think?  Fauna was picked as one of the top 100 restaurants in Canada in 2017 - #65 to be precise.  Only 5 restaurants in Ottawa made the list.  So I went with pretty high expectations.  But while Fauna was good, I can think of several other Ottawa restaurants where I have had a better meal. We decided to try the tasting menu and it was excellent! 5 courses with wine pairing. Every dish was of quality, mixing well flavours, everything well though if. Salmon belly, duck hearts, cornish hen...I felt the menu was creative and carefully prepared. I also liked that overall it wasn't an excessive amount of food. My husband and I love trying the tasting menus whenever we go to a new restaurant in a new city, but quite often I feel like it is just waaaay too much food. Another delicious inventive and interactive evening.  The food was wonderful and very well thought out. The place was slammed but  the servers and the bar staff still made us feel like we were the only ones there. They took time to talk to us about the orange wine they had on the wine list and were happy to share their knowledge and experiences with us. I've been to Fauna twice but this is my first review of them. Fauna has been a welcome addition to Ottawa's growing food scene. I came here on a Thursday night with my girlfriend and we looked through the menu. She settled on the soft shell crab appetizer and the lamb for the main, and I ordered the bison carpaccio to start and the quail as a main. Our drinks came after a short while as well. They have an interesting cocktail list and a very extensive wine list as well (and for those who are into wine, Fauna's wine director interned at the famed Noma in Copenhagen).The appetizers were delicious. The soft shell crab was soft on the inside and crispy and flavourful on the outside. The carpaccio was beautifully presented and a very well put together dish. Again, the flavour was spot on. The lamb and quail arrived shortly after we finished our appetizers. The lamb came with veggies and some couscous. The quail was rubbed with peri peri spice, and served on top of some smoked buttermilk and veggies on the side as well. Both dishes were delicious. The quail was a bit spicy, the peri peri rub definitely had a kick to it, but that's where the buttermilk comes in. You add a bit of it to the quail and immediately let up the spice and made the quail very enjoyable. Again, the seasoning was spot on and the meat was juicy and tender. My girlfriend really enjoyed the lamb as well, and the few bites of it that I had were very tasty. The dessert menu came after we finished and we picked the panacotta. It was a visually appetizing dish that tasted very good as well. Great way to finish the night. Fauna is an excellent restaurant and definitely one of the best in Ottawa.(As a note, our entire meal was covered by the restaurant. On her previous visit, my girlfriend left a few comments about one of the dishes with their management and management graciously invited us back to give them another try. Decided to come here one Wednesday night without a reservation, and was able to get a seat at the bar. The cocktails here are very good with some unique options. The Tom Collins here was probably the best cocktail I've ever had! The food was great, I had the soup of the day (Cream of Tomato) even though I generally don't like cream based soups, but it was amazing! I could have licked the bowl. I had a tofu main, it came with noodles and vegetables, it was pretty good but I think my meat-eating boyfriend enjoyed his dish more. We spilt the "chocolate and malt" dessert, which was quite good, but was supposed to come with chocolate cookies, but came with one nickle sized cookie! Not great for sharing, but luckily it came with enough delicious ice cream, caramel sauce and brittle to satisfy both of us. This place is outstanding, the decor is cozy and cool, but the food is where it's really at. The food is foodie heaven, small plates and large plates, which is the trend now in most foodie restaurants (think TOWN on Elgin - also great by the way). The menu is small and manageable for the kitchen, ensuring that everything that comes out is solid and well executed, instead of a massive menu where there are more hits and misses.Last time I went here had the Emu Carpaccio and the ''Pork'', the carpaccio was a revelation. Amazing flavors, with all the right notes of salt, acid and crunch, all perfectly balanced. The ''Pork'' was a sous vide bone in pork chop that was outstanding, with mushrooms and other perfectly cooked sides. Can't reccommend this place enough, it's probably my top restaurant in O-Town right now, right beside Supply and Demand. More...
